Was told back in September to move on over to Draw Thread. Fucking +3 weeks of little to no drawing because of home renovations got me rusty but I'm kind of back at it.

Why the fuck is actually coming up with drawing something so hard. I still haven't gotten through Vilppu manual, I'm on chapter 7. But idk, I feel mentally lost.

First thing I've drawn in 2 years. It's okay, but I'm intent on using ink only (shitty ballpoints) since it's inktober. So no pencil undersketches here.

My question is: should I finish this sketch? And if I do, should I glue a piece of paper over the largest closed flower, and redraw it smaller because I fucked up?
Or should I just leave it, and continue on to something else since these are just sketches.

What sticks out to me the most is that the values shifts in the reference are very subtle in comparison to yours. You could soften up some areas like the forehead and the cheeks; while the eyes you could use some more decisive, thinner, harder lines. The whites of her left eye are showing more in the reference than in your study. Lots of artist tend to exaggerate (not purposefully) small details when they notice them. I think you fell into this trap with how big you made eyelid because of the bright eyeshadow.

Still the proportions are very close so good job! Other areas that are off are along the right edge of the face, the size of the forehead, and the bridge of the nose leading into this bumped shape which sort of looks like a small trapezoid.

Hopefully this helps, I did a paintover but I think I learned more from doing it than you would by looking at it. Oh and don't forget to resize your image next time.

Push your values more. Some of the values are about right, like the plaster and some of the shingles.
But your reference has a lot more contrast. Look at the top of the roof, the shingles up there are nearly white.
Then at the bottom, at the gutter and where it overhangs, the gutter is nearly black, and there is a very soft but dark shadow cast on to the plaster wall. The plaster wall in shadow is also more saturated, a bit greener, mostly because of light reflected off the grass & foliage below it.
Blur your eyes and look at the reference compared to your painting. You'll probably be able to see where the reference is really dark or really light, and in your painting, it mostly stays much less extreme than it needs to be.

Composition needs rethinking. Staircase on the left leads the eye to the top left, where there's nothing. Both the focal points (figure and house) are on the right half of the canvas. That vertical tree lined up with the figure is stiff and closes the piece off. The house is closed off by the tree and shoved into the corner of the canvas, even though it's the second most important thing present.

Do more thumbnails next time. Ask yourself what's important, i.e. what is the picture about. Your composition decisions should reflect that. Right now the stairs and the empty top left are treated as if they're the most important. If you want that to be the case, then why include literally red riding hood and her grandma's cabin?

If that's supposed to be the wolf in the background, it doesn't make sense time-wise. Grandma should already be eaten once she's that close to the house.

It looks like you painted stairs outdoors, then tried to retroactively add a narrative to it. For an illustration, deciding the narrative comes before you paint.

So I'm going to a wall painting class now and I was asked to do a something to paint on a wall. Do you think this looks too much like an illustration rather than a painting?

all this "shakiness" isn't going to translate to an actual painting. The fidelity involved in making the slight curve on the top of the horse's snout is going to be near impossible. capturing the "atmosphere" and light of this with actual paint is going to be incredibly hard. And yes it looks more like an illustration than a painting.

Something like this would more easily be done with markers or a wet medium, rather than paint, which ends up being the case with most digital artwork since digital is more a drawing medium akin to watercolor, markers, and ink. Images done with digital don't easily translate into paintings.

Do some drawings with pencil or charcoal and try to reinterpret this drawing into that medium. Maybe try doing a smaller version of that drawing as a painting on a smaller board or canvas.

This digital drawing will be useless to you.

practice in one isn't practice in the other. Ruan Jia can paint digitally and is shit at traditional. Hockney is amazing at painting and sucks at digital.

He's average. If you gave him a medium where he could pull a line and didn't have to load a brush between strokes I bet he'd make something interesting, but he has a nonexistent color palette and very staid traditional drawing skills.

I'd say the reverse is true for hockneys digital work. You give him a color palette of every color imaginable and he kind of doesn't know what to do with it. Traditional painters are very dependent on limited color ranges and years of practice with each pigment.

as far as your lighting and color, there's not much to say because its very uncomplete even for the amount of time you spent on it. considering the light is coming from the top left, you need a drop shadow on the pants/legs and im assuming its hard light because you have part of the collar projecting on to his face. the rest is just basically not rendered enough no soft edges or anything.

But still, thanks, I'm seeing some stuff clearly now and planning ahead. nice work. The comp is a little strange. A lot of high contrast element where there shouldn't be. Like the blue beams in the bg. Also that screen on the bottom left catches the eye too much.

The blue beams of the background that reflects a lot on the right red surface affects readability as well.

there seems to be some perspective issues. there is to much scale difference between the guy standing on right and guy in the middle.

overall quite nice. needs to be pushed further tho. especially the faces.the form shadow of the faces seems to be too strong for the amount of bounce light there would be going on. fix the mans shoes. what does he have on his arm? it doesn't read well. im not sure about that coloring choice either.the slight colors in the bg are nice, i would put some on the characters as well

Great work. Definitely an A in a classroom setting. The only thing I dislike is using black for the shadows. I realize it's part of the style you're doing, but it's too jarring among all that color - I'd use a cooler black in the shadows, and a warmer black for the outlines where the highlights land.

the answer is probably just "don't do black in the shadows"... usually i paint the shadows myself, but i did an outline and filled it in this time, then painted on top of it.

Hmm, first of all: try to have some better edge control, it doesn't look like you're confident in what you're doing, it seems like you tried to copy the picture's each individual parts instead of understanding the form and planes and then replicating them, and then resorting to "well if this part is made of individual hairs then let's paint a lot of individual hairs, right?". Use bigger brushes I'd say, or rather don't go for the smaller ones, you shouldn't try to detail stuff like the hair or eyebrows. From the thumbnail it looks pretty good tho.

i observe symmetrical components and relationships of opposite duality (yin and yang).

The warmth of the light areas on the peaches are contrasted by the coolness of the dark. The pink and green make up two large shapes in the background that also relate to the theme of yin and yang.

The colors go red, magenta, blue. and yellow green cyan. They are paired in such manner. Blue (cool) in the first pair connects with the green and cyan (cool) in second pair and yellow (warm) in second pair connects with red and magenta (warm) in the first.

The depiction of peaches suggest desire and human sexuality.

There is excitement in the diagonal and complex shapes of the fabric.

This is not boring to look at.

The colors could be little bit more complete with addition of light green (yellow shade) in the bottom right corner and very little of red oxide or indian red in the shadow of the peach on right. Even without the changes this is a good painting.

Grayscale mode, adjust levels and curves to get the line thickness and solid color that you want. Then run the 'threshold' adjustment, I like it ~128 range, but use the slider and find what keeps the most detail. This kills all antialiasing and blurring and you get sharp linework of one color that you can select and fill on a fresh layer.
Alternatively, after adjusting the levels, you can just set the linework layer to multiply and the whites will be see-thru.
