You need to learn to construct. The facial features are all out of perspective and floating on the head, and the nose lacks structure and the left side of the face is bulging outwards. Even just drawing a centerline and relating things to that would help a lot.

Holy fuck, what is wrong with all of you? Yes, it's an easy shortcut, but doesn't replace skill. We get that.
Honestly every single concept artist does it at least sometimes and it often looks good, no matter if it's visible that it's painted over photos, it simply doesn't.
Are you all going to take a month time for a super detailed illustration by painting everything by hand, when your client requires you to finish it in a day? If you're all fine artists (which I doubt, as 95 % of people here want to be concept artists), I get that you're confused by this kind of cheating method.
But try not to be so conservative and embrace all the tools you have available just to make the final product look good, no one is going to care how you made it.
I'm not saying that that camel "painting" looks good or anything, but at least give some proper critique of the visuals, instead of the technique.
>pic related, if you think this is bad, just because it's full of photos, you should really either reconsider your career choice or just be more open minded about it.

All of that said, the original painting that started this discussion is >>1791407

How the hell can you even think this is a photobash? If photos were used in this, they are underneath a million of dirty, noisy texture brush strokes, which is the main problem this painting has and would completely defeat the purpose of a photobash.

drawing in symbols means that you're trying to replicate shapes without space or volume, you're just drawing what you think an arm or a leg should look like, and this makes your art look immature and flat in the end, like the chest of a fat cheerleader.

here's a good tip: before you start a drawing, lay a foundation of graphite on the paper and smudge it smooth with a paper towel or sandpaper, then begin your drawing by using your eraser to form the parts of your drawing where you think light should hit.

after you have your white spaces created with your eraser, block the rest of the shapes in with your pencil and use your smudging tool to smooth out errors wherever they be. this should help you create a drawing that looks three dimensional.

A comic I'm developing. Takes place on a continent with eleven countries, all representing food, a theme which permeates the fashion, weapons, armor, architecture, landscapes, and monsters. No elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls, goblins, kobolds, or any other heavily borrowed fantasy race/creature.

As for the plot, it's about a young pirate captain (Ginger) becoming more politically minded and wanting to explore the continent, while also being a fish out of water, introduced to a conflict that's ready to erupt, but thankfully prepared for and tempered by a brilliant tactician and queen that she takes guidance under. Franco's a prince who got promoted to General for no good reason and he's in way over his head. Onokrota's legit, but a drifter. He's clutch on the battlefield, but he's also charges a crazy amount for his service, so Ginger's not sure how long she can keep him around.

Overall you need to make a better drawing,(proportions are off) unless you intend to mass it in. If you intend to do the latter you need to accurately put down the values.

If your values are good your colors will follow. Reason being that if your values aren't right then you use of color won't hold ground.

Also squint

Perspective on the head is off. Look at her hat and the way it wrap around her head.

Your colors are really saturated, you may want to add the background color. That way you can have better judgement of the image.

That sweater should be darker

draw more.

>> No.1792028

>>1792007
Same dude, I might be wrong about the perspective part. That hat needs to wrap around the head.

This could be due to an overall flatness that the drawing is giving off.

tl;dr draw from life. git better, then draw from photo to avoid that flatness

I recommend you choose a general light source and push your values. The lighting doesn't have to be perfect, just suggested. Separate the forms, and put it in space. Is the back tail supposed to be omitting light? You really need to work on those values. Put a black layer over everything and set it to 'Saturation' mode. That will turn it greyscale and you'll be able to see that everything limited to a small range of values right now.

Color is a whole other issue that I think you're going to struggle with. Here's a pretty quick paint over to show what I mean about pushing values a bit. Don't neglect the background either, even if it's just to show a big of where light is coming from in general.

Good luck!

I get the feeling that you drew the contour for this and then worked from light to dark instead of dark and then building the lighter values on top of it. The rendering of the figure looks muddy because the shadows aren't as clearly defined as those in the reference, especially in the ribs and breasts. You need to punch in more light values in general so the forms in the torso can really pop out. Hope that helps.

I've also mixed dry & wet painting for some retarded reason, think I'll focus on dry more for nw since it's a bit easier to control and paint with in my opinion, it's more rigid, and once I learn to use colours to paint on wet and fewer/single layer with finer pigment.

Would you say this is a good idea?

You're welcome! Looks a lot better. Good improvement.

There are some more issues that could be improved on. >>1792749 is right in feeling it's over rendered. What that means more specifically is that there's a weird focus of heavy detail in places that seem unnecessary, like the it's upper back, tip of the tail, tip of the fingers. It's very scattered, while some major elements of the monster like the feathers are left soft and not very detailed at all.

I saw that you mentioned that you wanted to focus on working on the whole rather than bit by bit. Perhaps you should avoid zooming in a lot and making very detailed areas that are ultra sharp and keep the canvas zoomed out a bit.

I hope this helps. Again, good job!

Portraying women is the art of not hurting susceptibilities and you still have some way to go on the female beauty department. I mean, it's not just a matter of structure (there are several crookings there; flip it sideways and you'll see them in an instant) but of overcoming the manface syndrome. Often, the key is to simplify as much as possible and be very selective on the features that you choose to ponder: you need to find the right balance between resemblance and beautification. Study, for example, the works of Klimt; he helped a lot.

Color should depict a conventionalized notion of temperature (warm vs cold); that is his only specific plastic function, regardless of the style, and that's how you should understand it no matter how LSD or mescaline influenced your shit is. The rest of the problems are solvable with just tones and thus purely a matter of draw.

Giving it some actual sense, at least. He pretended to step into abstraction but ended up with nothing but some crude stylization of a figurative piece (some would say, a cartoon). With the ethnic clothes and that inscrutable movement comes a feeling of narrative context that meets no resolution on that empty background, so it's neither effective as an abstract or descriptive piece. Hence, looks unfinished.

There's really not much more to it than what you already described, but I'm alright with that given that I didn't spend a whole lot of time on the piece. I'll tentatively consider it a half-baked success. Thanks for the crit.

What is the point here? What you're trying to tell with this pic? And why would you want to rival that creature with detailed background? And why did you put it there if its not intended?

Digital painting has really made me feel sick, there's no thought behind any of the elements in the pic or real emotion. Just bizarre moments with unknown artifacts and creatures. How can I relate to one of the soldiers?

i can sympathize with you're saying anon. but you need to put yourself in the shoes of us, the aspiring pro concept artists. most of us (or rather i) don't share those romantic notions of art and creativity that many here might. i'm not a very creative guy, and i'm definitely guilty of painting for the sake of painting, seeing only shapes and value and never really thinking about subject matter. i don't think i'll ever manage to change that.

anyway, the point was just to illustrate an interesting scene... like you would see in a (generic) movie. that's literally it. tbh it's even sadder than that because i grabbed the sky out of a plein air study i did, thinking it looked nice and wanting to reuse it... so i added the military stuff. now i need a focal point...
