Finally. I think I got the colouring down so far, still working on the loli type figures though.

But there's something unique about how redjuice draws faces and I can't quite understand what makes it stand out.

From what I can tell he does a form of very light shading with medium sized eyes and small noses but I can't quite put them together like he does.

Do you have some general guideline/proportions for redjuice's faces? I'd really appreciate it.

Good luck. But let me tell you that you have no idea what you're getting yourself into, honestly. This is very hard work. Thanks guys! I purposely left the face really soft and hard edges elsewhere...I was reading The Practice and Science of Drawing and Harold Speed talks about how some painters leave the face soft to give it more life/mystery/depth/whathaveyou and then balance it out with very sharp edges elsewhere on non-important things. It was backwards from the usual way of doing things, so I thought I'd try it out. Also Linran kinda did that with this piece which I liked: http://cghub.com/images/view/538951/

Anyways, fun to try out, but if everyone is saying it needs to be sharper than maybe it was a failed experiment and I should stick to the regular hierarchy of edges with the focal areas being hard. Thanks for the feedback!

Very cool start! It's reminiscent of Frazetta/Jeff Jones/that oldschool illustrator look. Hard to give a lot of feedback this early in the game...I like the shape play and composition and the colours are pretty nice too. Maybe try to figure out more where the leg and arm are that are next to/on the tree, as that area is a bit muddled, just clarify it a bit. You can also maybe try to pull out some more cool graphic shapes of leaves and branches near the bottom of the composition. Keep working on it, can't wait to see it finished!

it's the planes of the face that need to be in perspective, not the effing features. What you've done is basically nothing. You didn't help the flatness of the features because you arbitrarily threw a vanishing point in there hoping to get a butt pat. Don't try and correct things when you yourself are clueless. Unless the artist tries to do some extreme perspective shot, the vanishing points of the features of a face are very far away to a point where there is no visible change in direction. When constructing the head, you establish the angle at which it is tilted and from there on the lines of the features are parallel to it. Your version is actually more off than his.

>> No.1463212

>>1463151
You fucked it up even more...yeah, it should follow perspective but your doesn't do it very well, and even in your example it is exaggerated by the photo, the vanishing point is usually further away than that. If you want to actually correct that head I think the best thing to do would be to put in a centerline and then use that to keep the features aligned properly. Might do a quick demo later if people need that.

>> No.1463213

>>1463151
I didn't say features don't obey perspective, but previous anon is right; you've given the face a fisheye perspective or something in your correction. notice the difference in the distance of the vanishing points are between your 'redline' of the sketch and the one of the photo of a woman. Fixing his sketch would be as simple as drawing an ellipse around the brow ridge and through the head, and drawing an ellipse down the center of the face. You can draw a box on the front of the face to see where the eye sockets end, and construct accordingly. the box helps your really define the direction. the neck is a cylinder. That's how you draw a face in perspective. Forget about the vanishing point shit for now.

I think that your drawing technique is sophisticated enough to get begin a more analytical/abstract approach to your subjects.

you understand form well enough to begin investigating it, and avoiding just drawing for a 'look'. try to not draw from photographs anymore and stick to drawing from life when you practice. you'll start seeing improvements when you do draw from photographs as it will be much easier. give yourself those kinds of restrictions. make it difficult.

if you need an 'in' sangram majumdar would be a decent person to start looking at. his earlier work is a good standard of the convention that you seem like you're aiming for.

What do you people think of my turd?". People respond with disgust, because it's a fucking piece of shit, but then instead of thinking, "Why, yes, it is a piece of shit. Why would I think people would react in any other way?", you instead responded to the people with, "Well, I'm only capable of making turds of this quality, and I thought people would like to see it." I threw a few lines on top so you can see where things are off. Red are just horizontal lines shot out from some notable points on the skull ref, and your skull should have those same points line up there. As you can see there is a discrepancy, you have painted many things too low.

Looks like too much crazy esoteric stuff thrown together. No it doesn't work, why did you think it would? You have random elements haphazardly thrown onto the canvas, and your depictions are unbelievably symbolic. The "girl" has a boy's body as well.

You should be making 20 thumbnails before committing to an illustration. And even then you should be finding/making suitable refs to assist you. Ultimately though, you just need a lot more work practicing the fundamentals. Read the sticky if you haven't already, and go out and read and follow along the books contained.

I don't know why you bothered to draw the skull when it isn't even correct. As others have said, your proportions are all over the place.

Try to describe forms using planes and values, not scratchy black lines. The parts that are drawn look like a symbolic mess.

I do like the brush strokes and overall values in the hair though, if that means anything. But to proceed forward, find a ref to allow you to correct the proportions.

Don't bother moving parts around in photoshop like that. Even if you stumble across something that looks more correct, it won't teach you how to draw it correctly in the first place. Redraw the head entirely.

Again, the mistakes you're making are easily fixed by finding a similar reference and learning from those proportions. It doesn't have to be similar lighting, or even a similar looking face - just the correct orientation and station point. You can change it to look like how you envision the character.

Little still life I set up today...weather was changing a lot, went from blindingly sunny to pouring rain and everything in between, crazy variability, so lighting was a bit tricky to get.

>> No.1464417

She's a rather ugly woman, but it's not a terrible attempt. Your biggest issue is the eyes. They're way too small, they don't have much depth, and their shape is unrealistic and odd. They look pasted on.

The coloring is rather boring as well. It's too shiny and artificial-looking. The nose is the best part of the image, in my opinion. You might want to refine the tip, though.

Keep on at it. Post the finished image when you're done. Try to fix those eyes!

>> No.1464419

Your coloring is really ugly and muddy. It looks like you just used a darker shade of the original skin tone instead of using more attractive, dynamic colors.

Because that's not sexy. She-hulk, like Starfire, is very much known for her sexual prowess so it just wouldn't be acceptable for her to be too bulky.

Sketched this out in about an hour, for practice after my resolution of starting with the fundamentals and completely re-training myself to draw. Really trying to study forms, shapes, shadows n things and basically just re-teaching myself everything from the start.

Pretty happy with how it turned out, for especially for not having drawn anything like it in a year or two. I may just ditch it or come back to it in the morning and throw a new layer on it and start fresh. Dunno yet, but I'm going to bed for now.

I find my self not completely agreeing... A more "polished" look can work well for a lot of things, there's not just one way to paint digitally "right".

However, I agree on some points. The colors just seem very dull and I miss some more hard edges here and there. I think part of the problem is the background color (okay, I think it's a big problem), the figure kind of drowns in it... Try a more contrasting color to avoid this kind of blandness. Also, try to incorporate more colors in your shades, here they seem to exist mostly of brown and green, it just doesn't give the skin a "healthy glow", so to speak. She also needs some spots of highlight in her face (like on her lips, nose, ear) even if it's not present in the ref, you should consider putting some in there!
