unmotivated loser here.
does there exist a free online course that I can follow that will get me doing studies and exercises to improve my shit?

I really need to be told what to do and directed, otherwise I never bother getting any art done at all.

It seems that in this forum, what you see is what you get, seeing as how it's entirely dedicated itself to making learning resources freely accessible to the commoner.
I hope you see the irony in asking a forum like this for a free source of learning.

But on my whim, you may have become lucky.

I like teaching, but I'm neither officially a teacher, nor do I fully know what must be done to train you to be the perfect artist, or am I a master of art by any stretch; but you seem like a dependent, spineless type. We may benefit from each other.

If you submit yourself to me, I will accept my role as your art dominus. The learning experience will be just as rich for me as it will be for you.

However, I stress the condition that you must follow my instructions or I will cease to guide you on the path of self enlightenment.

Do you accept?

>> No.1396334

Not really, I've learned that you just have to research a bit and figure it out yourself.
You just have to be aware of what you need to learn to improve.
You should practice gesture, anatomy, perspective, color theory, and value, and lighting mainly.
Afterwards you can get into composition and more advanced lighting.

I recommend still life studies at home, and either draw people outside or join a life drawing class. Drawing from photos alone won't cut it.

>> No.1396352

Learning how to learn indipendantly, set your own goals and find your own way is an essential skill for almost all artists.
You'll need that skill when you do conceptart, fine art, illustration, design, animation, if you want to go freelance or open a business... and in a lot of other jobs that aren't relevant to art.

I'm thinking hard where self-reliance and self-dispcipline doesn't apply.. website designers maybe? Designers for furniture catalogues? Cell painter?

Self-discipline is a skill, it can be learned, just be clever, experiment what works for you.
Schedules? Sketch Groups? That creepy ass mentor there? Listening to audio books while sketching? Introspection and self-healing to stop procrastrinating?

That's not how one improves at art though. You are supposed to think critically and analyze what you are doing wrong and then spend your exercise time intelligently accordingly, not mindlessly following the orders of some idiot who himself doesn't even know what he's doing.

Despite the fact that this one rushed to give you a name before I did, your current name will suffice.

However, if you prefer to have a male name, I give you the liberty of changing it to a similar male equivalent before your next post. Afterwards your name will be regarded as permanent.

This agreement means that I will direct your artistic training for an unspecified time with full certainty in your obedience, and you will not question my will or my credibility; my artistic prowess is irrelevant, it is my theoretical understanding of art that should concern you most.
Everything you needed to know before signing up has been outlined in my very first post.

Our contract will end in one of these ways:
>I've learned all I can from this.
>The contract is breached.
>You've surpassed me.

Without any further ado, let us carry on in this thread.

Jane, or whatever your name will be...

Same trip, minor variation to avoid gender identification.

Hello Captain, I am pleased that my patience has been rewarded.

A collage of stuff I have done (pic related). I am quite aware of the flaws, but if you or anyone else would like to point them out I am all ears. I haven't drawn more than doodles in a while.

My goals are to be a proficient draughtsman, able to conceive of an idea and take it from that conception to a finished product. I want to understand light. I want to be able to manipulate shapes IN MY MIND and understand how to translate what I see from observation and in my imagination into a two dimensional image. To this end I have done mostly master studies and bit of anatomy studies. At the very end of this I would be interested in learning color theory but I feel there is enough on my plate already.

I will post later with a collage of pictures that I find intriguing, inspiring or at a level of skill I would be interested in achieving.

A quick collage of images (pic related) I find interesting, inspirational and close to the level I hope to someday in the distant future achieve. Apparently you've never had an artist friend. Artists tend to be drawn to one another and use each other as motivation, inspiration, so helping each other out is not far off. Look at this board, for all the bullshit and douchebaggery it gives, it still tries to help others when they can. It's not mere pettiness. There's a reason why artists are competitive. But that doesn't mean that they are not capable to be friends.

This.

That right there is part of why people going to art classes/groups/sessions get better faster than when they were alone. It's part teaching, but mostly to do with having those other artists around you. You walk in and are motivated to draw because everyone else is doing it. Maybe you're inspired by someone else's work. Maybe you see someone doing something awesome and ask them about it, critique each other, etc.

It's pretty awesome.

My Jayne,

It is Geometry upon which all of Art is based.
You must foster your appreciation for geometry, for without understanding in geometry there is none in perspective, and without which there is none in form, and without which there is none in light and motion, and without which there is none in texture and element.

>"Let no one destitute of Geometry enter my doors." - Plato

Embrace Geometry as a means of mastering The Art.
There is no doubt that logical thinking is the basis for The Artist's technical prowess, and most if not all wise practices require that you heed the eminence of Geometry, often without them recognizing it as such.

If a Mathematician does not appreciate Geometry, he is no Mathematician.
Likewise, if a Musician does not appreciate geometry, he is no Musician.
Thus, if a commoner (who thinks himself to be an Artist) dismisses the eminence of Geometry, he is no Artist.

Then read all of the entries in this website:
>For most of these long (but shortened) history lessons, there are "projects" to do at the end.
>Do every project that only requires drawing or calculating (asbtract work); something you can easily demonstrate to me with text or diagram.
>You may use third party uploading services (image albums, text pastes) instead of the 4chan interface to show me your work.

It is geometry upon which all of life is based.
Understand this, and you will strengthen your spirit.
You have until March 21st to turn in your studies to me.

The work you have assigned is sorcerous alchemy to be sure! (Pic related)
Counter Clockwise from Top Left: Finding Phi, Star of Cheops (before cutting and folding), Pentagon using Golden Triangles, Pentagon Using Euclid's Method, Pentagon using Durher's Method, Golden Triangle using Euclid's method.

I have not done any of the folding exercises, or the tiling exercises and will be doing them tomorrow along with the rest of the drawings (pavement, perspective).

A few of the projects require materials or books I do not currently have access too. Specifically the following projects are causing issues:

The Medieval Method for Constructing a Pentagon (I have been unable to find this method and do not have access to the books referenced)
Brunelleschi's Peep show
Camera Obscura
Perspective Machine

For the last two I do not currently have access to the materials needed. The Peep show reproduction I have problems with conceiving of a way to show it with photos and no idea how to go about recreating it in a believable fashion.

Please advise if I am doing anything wrong so far. I will return tomorrow

My Jayne,

Good work.

I do hope you are becoming very fascinated by the balance of these abstractions of math and imagery. If not already, then soon you will see the world with enhanced understanding due to these very studies.

Let the out-of-reach books be dismissed. Proceed with the folding and tiling; mastering geometric folding is the mark of excellence, as demonstrated by the origami article.

Once you've finished these, and I've approved of them, I will advance you from geometry for now, and connect things to perspective study.

With that said, let me be clear about something, My Jayne.

Understand that our relationship is impossible without mutual trust; you trust in my wisdom, and I trust in your curiosity and passion.

It is expected of you to meet my demands, yes, but it is also expected that you strive for an inside-out understanding of the entire world at large, starting with my art lessons.

You cannot become any more than a puppet of education if you do not wire yourself to question everything. Wait for an alleged truth to be approved by your judgment before accepting it as truth, even if it's considered axiomatic.
This is the Art of Heroism.

Never enslave yourself to one who will not teach you to become free of needing a Dominus.
I will see that you emerge from the coming months or years taking flight on your own, no longer needing residence under my broad wing.
You must meditate on this.

I'm spending a large amount of time folding and folding and playing around with these tiles. It is quite interesting. Because of this there is some delay, for which I apologize. My Captain

I had hoped you would find that amusing, may those who need you shine it upon this board.

Here is the rest of my work (pic related). From top row: Polygons formed by connecting vertices on a 4x4 grid set in a circle, The Sacred Cut Octagon, Polyhedra, 5 pointed Star, Perspective Line Studies. Bottom Left, the beginnings of a penrose pattern, far right, pavement construction before and after learning the method (vanishing point off to the right).

The delay was wholly due to the folding, the incessant folding. It was a lesson in dexterity, humility and perseverance. I have folded so many shapes, and so many have failed. The ones that are pictured are the ones that are halfway decent. I have decided I'm going to learn how to properly fold more platonic and archimedean solids, but I will need a book to do so it seems so the search is on. With luck I will have new shapes to show in the future.

Side benefits I encountered-

I now have a nice variety of shapes to use for still life studies, once I fold some more polyhedrons and solids I should have even more interesting bits.

Trying to find the perspective lines in paintings has given me an entirely new way to look at them. I was familiar with the absolute basics of perspective (there is a vanishing point in most realistic renderings) but that's it. Trying to find that point and seeing the lines leading to it is a exercise that has proven quite useful. I generally assumed perspective would take care of itself with simple observation, but it seems that treating it much like the construction of various geometric shapes would be a good thing. At the very least it provides guidelines that will show you when you are "off".

My Jayne,

Congratulations on completing the first assignment.
I hereby reward you with a break until March 23rd.

In the meantime, do this to strengthen your spirit:

Spend 30 minutes tomorrow drawing absolutely anything, no matter how nonsensical or ugly.
Draw whatever lines or brushstrokes come to mind, traditional or digital.
Your intention will be to let your creativity breathe without judgment.

If you are inspired by geometry, you may draw shapes (as you may do of anything you've just recently been studying), but do it in a state of mental movement, never remaining in the same state for long.

This is the Art of Honing Emotion & Creativity.

On March 23rd I will return with your new task.

My Jayne,

Your next task is both in perspective and self-learning.

Attempt to reveal as much as possible about isometric perspective without having read about it. Use your geometric logic to derive a bootleg understanding of this form of perspective. Once you feel you've hit a dead end and would benefit greatly just from seeing a little diagram or googling a little fact about isometric perspective, look it up then.

Demonstrate a grasp over it by drawing your very own isometric grid.
Then draw boxes and cylinders in various combinations that interest you.
Then start drawing organic shapes that you cannot immediately solve using the basic grid.
See what techniques you can invent (based on your grid, and your sense for geometric accuracy) to break down the otherwise arbitrary shape into something solved, not simply eyeballed or guessed. This means using the isometric grid as a foundation on which to create fine, logical graphing for the arbitrary.

>To think of interestingly challenging organic shapes, simply find something that looks "hard enough" to do. It will probably be too hard when you try it for real, and you will find something slightly simpler to start with before advancing upwards. This is acceptable.

For the last activity, I anticipate drawings with a great too many lines of measurement and proportion for otherwise trivial curves that would perhaps be very easy to eyeball in the first place.
The reason for this seemingly inefficient method is for proof of concept, and a grasp of accuracy for when it's going to matter.
This is the routine of The Draughtsman.

Report back to me with how far you've gotten by March 26.
If my instructions are unclear, ask for clarification.

My absence was due to spring break and not being anywhere near a computer. While I admit that such an excuse is weak and flimsy it is the truth.

Here is a drawing before looking up isometric perspective (pic related) using just what I know from the previous assignment and my own knowledge. I am about to start looking up what isometric means exactly and going from there. Some strange things were discovered that I suppose I already knew inherently but was able to prove(?) by doing this drawing. Specifically parallel lines and how strangely they behave when observed at certain angles.

My Jayne, you know there must be consequences.
But since it's your first slip, I'm going to be gentle.

>Dexterity Drill
Firstly, position your arm so that your elbow and shoulder are free.
If you rest your wrist against the drawing surface, you do it with little weight.
Keep your elbow and shoulder turning in harmony to create a gliding movement, with a strong wrist.
Move your wrist with the utmost subtlety and minimalism, if at all.
Such is the manner of a graceful, controlled, and healthy Artist's hand.

What you will do:
>Use a ruler or line tool to draw 8 lines like the related picture; make them as large as your screen or paper can fit.
>Use it as a template for freehand tracing in the difficult manner.
>Do not rotate the canvas or page, lest you defeat the purpose of the template.
>Trace over each line in the template once over (I suggest rotating like a clock).
>Attempt for steady perfection with each infuriatingly imperfect stroke.
>Complete the cycle 16 times.

Due 24 hours as of this writing.

It's the 28th (4chan standard time)

Here's what I have so far, I drew my own isometric plane and attempted to put shapes onto it. This does not appear to be a large amount of work but it took me over 90 minutes to get these shapes down. Thinking in a manner that is conducive to the grid is challenging, however after a few failures I'm starting to see where a knowledge of geometry would prove quite helpful.

I feel that I can probably get a variety of geometric shapes down at this point. However organic forms are another matter and my attempts at them have not gone well. I will continue to work with it though as this is a new tool and I have yet to figure out all it's workings.

After hand drawing this grid I also searched out isometric grid paper, may I use this in the future or would you prefer that I continue to make my own?

I perhaps did this incorrectly and seek guidance. I made one template and free handed over the lines many times (pic related). However I used a single sheet. Should I have made a template 16 times and done one round of freehand lines on each template?

I see now that going slow is not the way to do this assignment. I also have a better understanding of "drawing with confidence" you can't feel your way around and try to slowly follow the line, it makes things worse..... Broad sweeping motions seem to work best. I have noticed that some lines I can control and get better form going in one particular direction vs the other.

Using multiple lines for non-digital is acceptable, but 16 at a time is too messy to work with.
Change to a new template when it's hard to follow the guide line.

As for what you've learned, good. You've noticed that some angles are easier, given your arm's mechanics. When in practical drawing, incline yourself towards drawing at those angles to best utilize your arm. When in practice like this, attempt to be as smooth and accurate as possible even with your impossible angles.

As for broad sweeping motions, yes. However, do not draw too fast to be thinking while you do. This is an exercise for control of line, not speed/smoothness of line. You want to be conscious through every part of the pencilstroke. This technique is counterintuitive during practical drawing. But it is indirectly beneficial.

If you draw very fast, you will get a reasonably smooth and straight line, and there's a chance it will be pretty accurate, but this is not total control, nor a demonstration of dexterity.

Draw neither with timidity nor aggression; draw with confidence.

Do the lines once more, this time with proper lines to trace over. Do one line at a time, but do 8 cycles.
Repeat on a new sheet.

Also do this:
>Draw a couple dozen circles, big and small, on an empty sheet of paper.
>Make your broad sweeping circles and little circles using the same still-wrist technique.
>It's more interesting if you follow a systematic way to size and position the circles on after the other.
>For bonus redemption, incorporate straight lines into the circles to create interesting 2D geometry.

All due in 24 hours.
I will give you the next study in return.

My Jayne,

Unfortunately, I couldn't send this post yesterday due my internet connection going awry.

Onto the lesson: we're going to fix your troubles of drawing organic forms in the isometric view. Observe CBPNG.

>Crossed Corners
Determines the center.

>Quartered Corners
If you take a perfect circle and fit it into a perfect square and quarter the shape like CBPNG, then you'll have a quarter of a circle inside a quarter of a square.

When in doubt, draw an ellipse in this way and it will be more accurate (though less sleek) than the purely eyeballed approach:

The technique is to draw the ellipse in 4 parts, and each one having two distinct ends attaching it to the other quarters. You are to concentrate on drawing the ellipse from end to end, one at a time. This way, you can draw the correct arc no matter how distorted the quarter is.

The more thorough you can be at measuring circular curves (cylinders, spheres, circles in any angle) and the basic shapes, the better you are at measuring abstract forms. This is because you can always break down an organic shape into something more graspable. And if you can at least measure the underlying forms and block them in, then you can draw the abstract features with little need for construction guide.

All this training with mathematically accurate distance judgment and so on serves the cause of training the wiring of your brain. With enough practice you will be able to, in the future, free-draw with ease what you currently can barely do with strenuous problem solving.

The art is in the beauty; the math is in the dimensions.

My Jayne, study this well. If you can recall them, draw what organic forms you failed to draw in >>1411087
Report back to me with your observations or questions, and don't hide your failed attempts from me.
We'll keep going from there.

>>1414803
It seems you're already grasping it better. Good.

>>1413978
Alas, I cannot do this anytime soon.
Follow my Jayne's lessons if you must.

My Captain,

Here is a sample of my work so far. More will follow.

I have been a little fuzzy on what you meant by organic, I took it to mean curved and complex surfaces, if this is incorrect, please correct me. I redrew the three items I attempted originally, an egg, a bird and a small computer mouse.

The crossed lines and method for quartering the circles is quite helpful. I have been attempting to extrapolate from this method a manner for drawing curves that are not derived from a perfect circle. So far I have figured out the following method which I ask you to either confirm or correct.

I mark off the end points of the curve first. Then I either draw or imagine a straight line passing between these two points. Next I mark the zenith of the curve, the point where it deviates the most from the line. Finally I attempt to draw a curve that passes through all three points in a smooth manner.

This seems to be working relatively well, though I still have issues with my line quality (see pic, all that chicken scratch, ugh). I have questions though.

Is there a specific method I should follow to start? I generally try to box out the space the object takes up, then I draw the "footprint" of the object. Then I try to imagine the same "footprint" on each side of the box and go from there. This method works but is obviously quite imprecise.

The egg specifically gave me serious issues, I am still confused by it. Eventually what I did was draw two points for the top and bottom ends. Then I drew cross cuts on portions of the box it would take up to determine center points. Then I drew a circle that connected all those center points. Next I drew curves that passed through the end points and those marks on the sides of the box to end up with the egg shape. It looks OK but still doesn't seem right in my mind.

Lastly I realize I have failed to state this explicitly,
Thank you for your continued lessons.

My Jayne,

Pardon My silence.
I've been pondering the big picture of your curricullum, refining how I perceive the fundamentals.
Such is the life of a budding self-learner.

Your patience and allegiance to me is highly appreciated, My Jayne.
You have been very good, and I do notice this.

So that you don't feel forgotten by your Dominus, I'll give you some wisdom to keep your spirit buoyant until your next lesson.

>Quarter Technique
Your technique of marking the Zenith, connecting the dots and so on, is sufficient. Notice how if you mark the zenith and connect the dots in straight lines, there are then two places to mark Secondary zeniths. And if you mark those and connect the dots once more with straight lines, there are then four spaces to mark Tertiary zeniths, and so on. This is known as a Fractal Principle, as you can repeat this process ad infinitum. For practical use, it is best to keep to the Primary zenith, or secondary at most. Eventually you will eyeball the curve with no strain of mind.

>Line Quality
There will be much practice to come; that is all.

>Starting Method
To start you should always rely on the fundamental constants of isometric perspective; rules of logic that never bend. Here are some:

Parallel Lines: no lines converge in this perspective study. The way you view normal objects does not apply in this grid. Again, guide your eye with reason, not instinct, for now.

Direct Measurement: There is no foreshortening or warping in this perspective. Make use of plain size/length comparison.

Sphere/Circle: A perfect sphere always looks like a perfect circle. >Direct Measurement

Excellent attempt on the egg, but later I will explain how to construct it better. For now, observe the latest study that you have posted and deeply consider what I have told you as you examine it for new discoveries. I will return with a robust lesson within 72 hours time, My Jayne.

I want to know what you've observed by then.

My Jayne,

You responded quickly. My apologies for not checking the thread sooner.
Now then, let the lesson begin.

First, let me that it doesn't actually matter whether you use Isometric, Dimetric, Trimetric, or some other parallel perspective.

>Parallel Projection
The reason isometric perspective is different (from the way we see with our eyes) is not that you're working on a 30 degree or 25 degree isometric grid. The reason they're different is simply in the lack of vanishing points in all forms of Parallel Perspective. Hence, the specific angles involved in an isometric grid are not of fundamental importance, but are arbitrary.

Do not grow attached to the specific grid you are using. You are using Isometric view (which has many worthy lessons to take in), but you are doing it to build a mastery over 3D without vanishing points yet; Parallel Projection, as Wikipedia names it.

>Egg in 2D
See CBPNG.
Note how the use of center lines can be used for plain vertical measurement like I talked about 3 days ago (Direct Measurement).

>Egg in 3D
See this link first:
http://www3.ul.ie/~rynnet/keanea/images/cube&sphere_1_c.gif

Take a circle, fit it into a square in perspective, and draw it across the middle of a cube (result: green oval).
Take the longest part of the oval and use that length as a diameter to draw a circle (result: black sphere).

This is the way to fit a sphere into a cube.

Make one yourself. Then do one using a custom-made isometric grid.
I can explain three different methods of making an arbitrary grid if you don't like how you do it. Just remember that evenly spaced lines are essential for a consistent grid.

>Continued

>> No.1422749

Refer to CBPNG now while heeding these instructions:
>Make a 2D profile of the egg like the diagram.
>Fit the circle/oval across the middle of a cube (green) like I explained in >Egg in 3D.
>Use a centerline to vertically stretch the 2D profile into a rectangle - from the top and bottom accordingly.
>Draw out the red curves to complete the egg shape. Treat it like a distorted circle (see it as quarters).
>With the 2D Profile completely drawn in perspective (red cutout view egg, rectangle frame, etc.), you will make it a 3D form.
>Take the green oval's long side (lower-left and upper-right corners in this case) and draw the blue sphere with that diameter.
>Take a diagonal measurement of the egg like you did with the green oval; use that to draw a flat egg the way you drew a flat blue circle (as seen in black).

Take note of how:
>Completing the egg outline is practically nothing more than connecting the two egg masses you've constructed (red egg/height and blue circle/body). Remain conscious of the overall picture of the egg as you draw the final 3D outline (as seen in black).
>The egg is the same width as a flat cutout no matter the angle. The only foreshortening that occurs is of a vertical nature.
>The spherical part is not foreshortened. Such is an example of the wisdom in constructing with basic geometry in mind.
>The top and bottom points (across the middle, to be precise) of the red outlines represent the true top and bottom points of the 3D egg.
>The top and bottom points of the green oval are lesser than that of the blue circle.
>The blue circle relates in size to the green oval and axis cube.

>Continued

>> No.1422750

To do in 24 hours:
>Draw 2 eggs, each in one of the angles I have shown. (You do not have to color code your lines).

Now then...
You haven't followed my orders from 3 days ago.
You are to go back and do it along with today's lesson. Same deadline.

You will also do >>1412177 again, but this time use a fractal pattern (instead of your first pattern) for the circles and lines . But instead of lines, accompany the circles

with triangles. Fill the page.
The fractal can be of any simplicity.

Again, everything is due in 24 hours.
Ask questions if anything I have explained is not fully understood.
I await your work.

Hello, founder of #UnmotivatedLosers here.

We have been together for four weeks now. I have often seen people join and post many images in the first week. In following weeks they post less and less until they have to be kicked for inactivity.

I have noticed that the key to success in the group is becoming active in talking to other group members. That is why we strongly suggest getting in group chat (dA irc client), emails, skype, or other methods of communication. Those who are most active in chat are also the most active in the group.

Also, group members do not have to submit every day. Because of time restrictions, it is also allowed to submit all drawings done that week in one day on Saturday. As long as the members are drawing every day!

Let me know if you want to know anything else, we're constantly fixing up the system and adding more interesting things every week.

Just a friendly reminder that we're vaguely nearing autosage at this point (300 here, right? We're at 265), so if you guys want a chance of seeing Jayne's return you might want to ease up on the reactions.

I propose we use our remaining bumps for r34, but y'know, that's just me.

Posting again with sage doesn't do anything but bring it even closer to the autosage limit. Every post, even sages count towards the limit.

A true spectacle for us to behold. Truly a journey beyond our own measure; many of us may ne'er meet a moment opportune to hold so sweet, so dear, an enchanted piece of belonging and purpose as to that honorable Jayne. And yet, she had vanish'd without but a speck or trace even so minuscule. She had left without saying her farewells. One cannot go about his life without being stolen away with that vulgar and morbid question:

"How could she?"

Of course, she may have her own reasons, she may not have known, we all tell ourselves.

"How could she?"

This thought echoes in our cranial cavities and we may not bare it from. How could she forsake the blessing of her noble Master, her direction, her legate of truth and discovery, Her Art Dominus.

And now, forever, that Pioneer will be lost to us, for he has no reason to continue on here without his Jayne.

Can this mortal calamity called life be more cruel to the likes of us?

Nay! Nay I say, it is too cruel.

Perhaps there may be hope. Hope that we have reached the bottom, and there can be no lower than us. Who were we to question that graceful Jayne? She was the bravest of us. The only one of us to convince the glorious phantom to bid a short veil of time.

Truly, we were only observers on this journey, we should be grateful that we were allowed to merely gander. We should not regret the world that comes to end, but rather find comfort in the privilege of our lessons.

My Heart goes out Jayne, and the true face behind that mysterious Captain.
