I hate to say this but it is true, drawing actually makes you better at drawing

I think I'm starting to wrap my head around the idea of seeing value when i look at a reference instead of thinking of everything as lines. Very weird feeling

Could someone please explain their understanding of Vilppu's gesture? I've read his book and watched his lectures, but I really don't get it. Is the movement created by the transitions between lines? Since the lines aren't contour lines how do you keep things in proportion?

I took the brent eviston basic drawing course and apparently he did way more just about every day for a year when he was a student. I didn't commit that hard but I started just drawing pages of circles and ovals of various sizes and it's helped me immensely with drawing curves so I'd say it's helpful for at least something.

Sketched up a small shortstack, might actually make this into a character but gotta go through it again to fix the anatomy on the legs as they are a bit too long for this type of character. Also the general anatomy isn't quite there yet.

sorry, no. my pc becomes literally unusable (for drawing) if i try screencapturing at more than 1 fps (and even then, it microstutters at about 1 stutter per second lol)

The balance seems stiff because the torso is in front and the limbs are doing things around it.
I'd like it more if her shoulders were tilted more (one up, one down), right hip and glute raised, the navel mark placed in the middle. After that, perhaps lower the left leg a bit or add foreshortening on her left arm.

i am using sai (version 2) so i could not really give you my brushes if i had any specific ones

my one and only brush for drawing, sketching, linework (aside from calligraphy) is a round brush with slightly softened edge, with strong pressure sensitivity in opacity, slight sensitivity in size, and a weak "blur" / "smudge" component (i would advise against using smudging brushes usually, but i got used to "destroying" an underlying brush stroke by placing another stroke on top. the weak blurring effect destroys the underlying brush strokes edges and the eye can focus on the stronger top brush stroke more easily. it is a matter of convenience while i am sketching, when actually drawing i press down hard enough to cover the underlying strokes either way, regardless of blurring or not

(pic related, ive posted it before... sorry. here you can see the same brush at various sizes and various (unfinished) stages of a sketch to get afeeling of how it behaves. large soft brush strokes at the beginning of the sketch which "blurr themselves" into being vague, and increasingly smaller and smaller and more decisive strokes which due to a smaller brush size look sharper. basically the hard round brush meme of doing everything with the same brush. its nothing special, only i have gotten used to it completely)

also i should note, the size sensitivity serves only to make each stroke itself a bit prettier, when i start a sketch with a large brush size, i do not press harder to make it bigger, i increase the brush size itself and press down very lightly to create very broad and very vague suggestions of shapes. do not make the mistake of trying to cover a wider range of brush sizes with pressure alone! you will drive yourself insane as i have before i understood this

I have a Surface Go from like 2018 so I can use it as a screen tablet for drawing when I'm laying in bed but Krita is too powerful for it to reliably use it smoothly, it ends up lagging in more complex things especially multiple layers.

You can’t work any faster than this, because of that, at the very least, you should try to enjoy whatever time that you *are* able to draw - you should give yourself credit for drawing at all between balancing a job; many-a-post I’ve seen other anons describing it as impossible trying to draw after work. I like drawing excessively large and repeating patterns that are tedious and take hours to do, not because it's difficult to do it, but just because I want to and no one else will. On average I spend 2-4 hours drawing on each weekday and upwards of 8 on weekend. I have done this for years. I like making something that really "exists" in a tangible way. I like showing that I was there and that I did something. I like doing pointless things for hundreds of hours just to say "see, I really do exist."

If I had a room to use to create a showcase, my dream would be to plaster the floors, wall, and ceiling in my doodles. Then I'd like to hang more down from the ceiling with fishing line so that you can't physically move without pushing through them

I’ll let you know how it goes. It took me 4 years however, to produce one animation which was anywhere near the quality of say, Yeero’s first animation he had ever uploaded to the internet (on his old Tumblr account), so I feel like 1.5 years isn’t enough time for me to learn art fully either (or even to any decent or acceptable extent); if there’s a bell curve of people with talent / learning speed, I’m no doubt on the far, far, left side of that bell curve. Then there must be some misunderstanding here - I try to do memory copies more than a week later after I originally copied it, I have not previously “shown my work” before this, but I can show you the exact plates that I’m trying to reproduce from memory, and wherever I can’t (which is often), I am trying my damndest to substitute in some type of remotely close set of shapes that I can muster up that will still represent that I had learned something from copying said plate in the first place.

Top left is a pair of legs I tried to style after doing a Norakura copy,
Top right is a Loomis head with part of Mustang's outfit from FMA,
Bottom left was me trying to roughly capture the shape of a Taco head + adding hair to it which I've also copied from Paryi

(though hair has not come very naturally to me so I don't remember much from the copies I did of him weeks ago, as I've also gone back to grinding just pure anatomy again)

All memory copies / best-attempt-memory-reproductions I've done here were done more than 24 hours after the original plates were copied.

hey not sure if this is the right thread for this but working on a game and im a bit stumped on how to make the character im drawing match more with the overall aesthetic of the game. Not necessarily the artstyle, but moreso the coloring of the character, and how to make it match the backgrounds, yet also stand out.


First picture shows the pink outline i wanted to try at first. Kinda worked. Second is when i tried to keep the pink, but tried making her all black to see if it would help stand out. Last is when i just tried coloring normally but it doesn't match the game at all.

Sometimes I come here to see the work of the new /beg/s and there are some that are worth giving advice because, as someone with experience, you can clearly see the potential, it just needs to be polished. Unfortunately, those /beg/s only post here rarely. And like you said, it's probably only less than 10.

As for the rest, I don't really see the need to give them any more advice because I've done it in the past and yet the progress they've made has been zero. And it hurts to say it, but you're right. Maybe those people should stop drawing and abandon this thread on their own when they realize they're really bad at drawing.

I don't know how to explain it, but even if it's a poorly drawn drawing you can really see the passion that person put into the drawing. You've certainly got promise. I would reccomend looking into getting more of a grasp on how the arm works/bends. It will take some time, but you're clearly putting effort in to be better!
