Also, as alternative you can buy a scanner for sketches and don't just take pics from your phone, it just looks a bit messy.

The legs and feet you did very well! I'm quite impressed. Especially the knees and that part on the other side of them, DAMN! GOD DAMN! But i think the one discrepancy that I'm noticing has to due with the head and neck. I think the neck muscles should connect to the back of the head instead of the head kind of just cutting into the neck and sitting on top of it, if you see what I mean. It looks kinda flat there in the area on the back of her neck. But overall it's just some healthy criticism, you did a great job :)

As for the back, yeah, I'm not great with back anatomy. I did omit the trapezius somewhat. Oh well. I'll keep it in mind for next time, if there is one.

This is how I feel about most of my stuff, good to have it confirmed by another person. Maybe I'm just bad with color, and it doesn't seem to get better.

>> No.7163757

I'm not familiar with colors, so I can't help you there. However, when I do play with colors, applying crazy gradients presets found on the CSP store page, or even adjusting the Opacity of the layer I'm coloring on always provides some really interesting color choices.

Cheer up, sport. We've all been there, but you just gotta remember where you came from and where you are now. Realizing that is important, because you remember the risks you took and the experiments you did to get better. Sometimes I wonder what my past self would say of he saw the art I make today, or if he would even believe that he would go on to be able to do stuff like that. That's what it's all about in my opinion.

I think you've done a fantastic job at the shading. I really like the faint hatching peering through to help give even more volume than just using colors. It's not a technique I often see and it turned out well!

I'm not terribly good with colors either but I think I could offer some guidance.

Your flats are really unsaturated and luminous, which gives this unappealing washed out and dead look. Everything is so close to pure white it messes with the contrast.

Don't be afraid to darken the colors, especially in digital where monitors are going to lighten them up a bit anyways.

i played a ton of fighting games in the years prior, which i think gave me a good idea of “learning how to learn”. ive also taught and coached before, so i think a lot of that also plays into the whole knowing how to structure my studying stuff.

i think anyone can do what i did, and probably do a lot better, even, given that i wasted a lot of time myself with some inefficient resources and resource-hunting. people are getting better at stuff all the time, and theyre getting better at it faster, too. people mogged me in fighting games in less than half the time because their access to resources was just way better. im only just starting to get to properly painting and putting clothes on my characters, so i think my hard focus on constructive drawing, anatomy, and shape language has helped me make up some of that time.

im trying to make a structured guide that ill put out at some point. i started with peter hans dynamic sketching videos, proko gesture, and copying my favorite artists a lot. especially tenpura, who i usually watch stream and drawalong with every time i get the chance. picrel, seeing their process, what shapes they use to construct with, etc is really helpful

i would say if you want convincing kemo style stuff, put a lot of points into line confidence and studying the shapes your favorite artists use; pay particular attention to proportion. accuracy is key - which is something a lot of art regimens, like bargue, impress early on. id watch that one krenz lecture too, which i can link later if you want.

if youre obsessed with kemono and copy it faithfully snd critically, youll come to understand how its drawn. its not magic. trace if you have to, just to build up confidence in the fact that your hands are capable of doing it. i believe in you, anon

this has been sitting in my wips folder for a month, i have 0 dedication. i have a shameful wip collage i update every month to remind me that i cannot commit to my art. it's not even that i'm unsatisfied with what i draw, i just can't finish anything. i actually really like this one.

i will never take commissions because of this, despite people constantly asking.

how do i stop this? every time i draw, i just get another idea and immediately drop what i was drawing previously.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with your works. I think it's fine. Granted, I don't like the way the boobs work there, but that's just me.
But your discouragement might come from seeing other's work and feeling you've on the wrong path. With that mindset, I'd suggest finding your favorite artists work and try to fanart it as best as possible. Naoki Saito has a video on this. In short; just try your best to Mimic your favorite artists (only one artists), and upon your failing you'll tumble upon your own style that has more appeal because you were aiming towards your inspirations.

I appreciate it man, I really do. Sadly I don't know what artist I would even consider my favourite, the folder in which I collect art I like is so vastly diversified it's hard to find a common artstyle. I guss I would have to sift through it and find what I like most but I'm not sure where I would even start there.
As for boobs on that Loona, technically she is supposed to be leaning back so her boobs go sideways but I guess I didn't pronounce that enough.

>As for boobs on that Loona, technically she is supposed to be leaning back so her boobs go sideways but I guess I didn't pronounce that enough.
In that case, the lean back isn't clear in this image. But, it isn't because you failed to do the lean back properly. In 2D, you'll NEED to exaggerate the pose, and there will be times where in order to fix it, you just need to exaggerate it even more. Don't be afraid to break the anatomy, as an appealing pose can save a bad drawing.
>Sadly I don't know what artist I would even consider my favourite
Sounds like the problem is an overwhelming amount of choices. Thing is, if you jump around from all inspirations, you keep starting all over. You don't even have to pick up a pencil, this effects your Eye judgement just by seeing the artwork. This is why you may not see progress. It's ideal to select that One artists and follow their path in hopes to obtain Some of their style. Upon failing, when you do stumble upon your style, the beauty behind that is you'll have a more proficient knowledge on style, it'll then be easier to shift from one style to another.

that is going to be the hardest thing to do.... guess I have a lot of stuff to think about and to do. I should probably categorize it all by artists but with the amount of the pictures I have it's gonna be hard. Thank you for the new perspective on this though, I hope I can use it somehow, picking stuff and making decisions is my greatest failing I would say.

I’ve been thinking about making a thread on this if the question doesn’t have an easy answer, but even taking the mediocre ones into account, what is it about Japanese art styles that makes them so distinct?

I’ve been watching a lot of TukaretaINU and it’s trying to go for a humorously ugly Adult Swim-esc style while still clearly looking natively Japanese.

Even professional western artists like in shows like Teen Titans and Avatar have something in the artstyle that looks just off enough to tell that it’s not really Japanese while a lot of Asian kids just starting out with MS Paint scribbles still draw Pokemon in a way American adults can’t quite capture. Why is that?

My insecurity has always been that certain art is “Japan-coded”, like you can tell the cultural background of someone just based on something as seemingly small as linework.
I’ll dig around for more examples and post as I find them

Why do white artists alway fuck up copying it though?
Out of the hundreds of westoids copying anime I see every day on social media and art sites, only one made work that authentically looks like it was made by a mangaka and could convince me he was east Asian.
Everything else either looks like an out of touch How2Draw Manga book, Class of 09, or a MikeyMegaMega tutorial. Sure the latter is technically skilled but he lacks the eastern talent for his “anime girls” to actually look like real anime

Agreed. This idea is majorly stupid. I studied one master and used to draw very similarly to him, but have since deviated and grown. Wow, who would have guessed? I chose not to study eastern art because I dont want to be random eastern artist #5747838573838 with no variation in my style to distinguish me from the rest ((here's your answer >>7165627)
which, any creative variation you make, since you aren't genetically asian, would get you called westoid). If someone wants to create unique drawings, they should not be flamed for it.

Another example is realism obsession. The exact same problem: you arent a real artist unless you can become a camera and do nothing fun with art ever (these people completely ignoring the fact that art creation is about expression).

This whole eastern/western artist drama is bell curve behavioir. "I'll draw what I want!"-> "Nooooo eastern artist waifus I need to draw eastern"->I'll draw what I want!" Just draw and stop obsessing with perfectly mimicking your style to fit the cookie cutter "eastern" mold.

I feel as though my third eye was opened yesterday. Apologies for not posting anything. I had a theory for a few months and it wasn't until I spoke to an artist I've admired for many years, someone who I respect a lot that confirmed my suspicion into fact.

Construction drawing, details ect. Don't really matter, none of that matters. Drawing methods are gimmicky these days, they served their purpose to train students or apprentices but we're way past that era, we have so much information now that I don't think one specific drawing style is a good approach, it's better to learn all of them to remain situational but I'm digressing.

Silhouette is the only thing that actually matters , people call this "Shape Language" but that's only part of it. If you want to capture a good likeness of someone when you're doing a portrait make sure the silhouette is on point. Meaning you include the entire contour (hat, hair, neck, collar) as one shape. You break these into silhouettes within silhouettes but the major all encompassing one has to look like that subject or no amount of detail fixing will matter. It's turd polish at best.

You've probably seen sinix videos talk about how he's anti constructionist and I've slowly become this way over the years. Many years ago when I used to watch artists like Sunibee paint, they would draw a huge silhouette dark then paint inside it and they'd nail it immediately. I was amazed and wish I recorded these but i remember that tidbit vividly and now I understand why.

Marco Bucci mentions something similar but i think he doesn't emphasize it's importance enough. It's not just important it's vital to making your work look good. If it doesn't look like the character as a contour shape you still have a ways to go to understand it within your minds eye.

i've been thinking about this recently too. its like, you have to learn construction and gesture and perspective and all that stuff, the fundies to get yourself out of beg-core, but then you almost have to go backwards in a way to rediscover "appeal" once you learn how to draw. its like now that you have some informed drawing ability, you rebuild your symbolic representations with that to create something that is actually nice to look at.

Feel is a very ambiguous term but I understand what you mean by it. Feeling a form, feeling a shape or space. The idea is basically the same. You're feeling out a silhouette. This is essentially what children are trying to do when they first learn how to draw and honestly it's the right intuition. Construction is a very long winded way to get to that point, it makes sense for a specific type of consistency but you quickly become stuck in a rut.

>>7169299
Yeah exactly you essentially have to learn all this stuff to know what to throw out. It's wild how much I've done construction just to not need to do it.

nta, but /beg/ nonetheless and very curious. are you just visualizing the forms when putting the lines to paper and if so, does having a base understanding of construction help you get to that skill level easier? One of my inspirational artists uses silhouettes when sketching/drafting (but not all the time since they can just put lines to paper and make amazing figures) and I've been having a really hard time understanding how to practice that, myself.

Yes, I see the forms in my head before I put pen to paper. I still have a ways to go myself but It's taken a lot of mileage of drawing tons of filled sketch book pages of playing around with constructed shapes. I think the misnomer is using construction to get from Point A to Point B. When it's easier to just get so comfortable seeing those things in your head you can skip most of those in between steps.

I use construction and underdrawing though. Left is just the sketch layer for the right. Good stylistic symbol drawing is just imposing cool abstractions and shape language and lines on top of the 3d anatomy you've studied and laid out. If you want to make anything that has 3 dimensions, including stylized kemono/anthro, you should at least study how they turn in space.

Exactly, I can't be angry towards myself or feel inadequate. I didn't put in the time to earn the right to complain.

Some people have more of a natural ability then others, but they still put in the time. They're either drawing more then you or putting in way more work. I feel as though this idea comes from inadequacy and at the end of the day it's just an excuse to cope with not putting in enough time.

Like the "loomis" method or the "Reilly" method. These are just weird gimmicks, I've never seen many artists pragmatically use these, or they used them briefly and quickly got past it.

I didn't argue against that, you study construction until it becomes very intuitive, then you're not spending so much time doing so much construction. In the same vain as learning anatomy, you learn it to know what to leave out. I feel knowing what to NOT show is almost as important as what to show.

No, that's not the point I was trying to make. You absolutely have a right to complain, or rather, to vent. Art is a hard process that can feel very difficult, and often hopeless, but it never is if you're willing to put in the work, and you're going to have to put in a LOT of work. The more cognizant you can be of the lows, the better you can weather them and aim for the highs.
Learning to deal with frustration and anger in a healthy manner (because those are all things we feel, and shouldn't feel bad for feeling) is just as important a skill to learn as drawing itself, and it, too, takes a lifetime of learning.

Just be easy on yourselves, anons.

Art, especially drawing, is a selfish act. We're trying to either earn reputation, a living, or likes from randomers on a social media platform. With any skill there comes lows and disappointments. A lot of the information is esoteric and very cryptic. However there are things surrounding the abstract that can be taught pretty straightforward (Anatomy, perspective)

Even still there are no guarantees for success, there is more to art then just skill and tying your personality or happiness to your ability to do art is not a good mindset. This advice goes for everyone doing art esp INT.

Make art for yourself, express yourself with the skills you possess right now. Enjoy the act and joy of being able to create. The dopamine you receive will make you naturally more curious, more receptive and certainly better over time.

Oh thank god and thank you.
Holy fuck your studies are beautiful. I still can’t believe you’re white. Even the best kemomangaka can’t do this.
My heart bleeds for soulful faces and exaggerated forearms on sleek, soft shaded linework. Every atom of it is perfect

I had some guy assuming me to be from spain for no other reason than him liking the gardevoir I drew once. And on his profile he was ranting about how "Latinx" -people or whatever are just generally better at art and that it is senseless for him to draw because he will never be as good. Apparently these people are a thing.
