The box is good to show the front and side planes of the rib-cage.
An egg shapes shows the roundness of the rib-cage.
The sternum and thoracic arch provides a very obvious and useful anatomical landmarks.
Use a combination of all three to get the best of them all.

Also Scott Breton has some simplified 3d models of the rib-cage that are pretty useful.

I'm still getting the hang of longer gesture/figure drawing, so haven't really developed a process, especially for establishing accurate proportion. I've tried to avoid using lines like in picrel, preferring to use landmarks, but wondering if it could help as I'm still omega beg.

Nah using lines like in picrel is the best way to learn proportions imo.

Just remember the 7 heads and what they each contain- as well as the fact that the 4th head is the end of the pelvis, meaning that the legs are half of the body. This is very critical when understanding proportions because a lot of people underestimate leg length, as I notice you did in your previous drawing

*sigh* back to the drawing board

The left hand is supposed to be shortfortened since the sword is a bit forward but yours doesnt look like its wrong either.

Didnt add a visible pommel because someone already got ended rightly, actually it seemed to make an already large sword even larger so the hand is covering it.

So i add a bit of calf volume at the tippity top and the bottom of the shin.?

The thigh meat is different from the butt meat, so on a fatter ass the thigh won't rise smoothly into the buttock, but instead the buttock will stick out of the back of the thigh as it's own shape. The buttocks themselves have a naturally beanish, dimpled shape which becomes more obvious the bigger they get.
Here's an extreme example (not my art) for educational purposes

I exaggerated the ammount of visible sword grip, but I'd make just a bit visible to show she's not holding the sword at the pommel
I modified the sword holding arm just to make the hand go lower, but the anon that mentioned the lack of foreshortening is right. Have that in mind.
The main things I modified at the legs was her left calf, which was way too low, and changed the angle of her left leg (you can check that by opening the two images on separate tabs and switching back and forth between the two).

That doesn't look gay. It looks like some hardcore 80's heavy metal design style that you would see on the back of a black leather jacket. It's a dead style, hard to come by. If you have it, try to save it. You should have a partner to clean that design and do the render. If you try to "polish" that you will end up loosing that weird raw style and creativity. I would use flat colors and thick heavy lineart to finish it.

You're doing something quite difficult there. The thing is that a good rendering could fix many issues with the foreshortening of her body. You could start with the chain, making it thicker at the bottom to help fooling the eye about the view angle. You need to add details to force the perspective. It all depends on how you render her body.

Another Guilty Gear gesture sketch. The pose is a bit exaggerated but I want to say it feels better than my last sketch. Feel free to enlighten me with the errors of my ways.

>>7149280
I feel like the foreshortening is a bit intense, even with the angle. However, this could be just a side effect of the main area I think you should try to fix -- the lighting.

The lighting is a little confusing because I'm getting the impression that the "camera" is looking up at the figure, however the lighting doesn't seem to convey that really well.

For example, if there was a spotlight shining towards the figure from above or in front of the figure (but above the camera's head), the face should be slightly obscured in shadow. Likewise, if there is a light source coming from below, her breasts should be casting shadows up towards her neck.

I think you have an interesting idea for the lighting but you're lighting the figure with universal lighting when it feels like you really want some dramatic lighting.

Decide on a key light angle and commit to it!

I'm autistic, with ADHD. I can't focus on trying to get better at all or even come up with anything to draw without just giving up and going back to looking at my phone and doing something else.
I've legitimately never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby and have gotten lazy over the years with my only actual one which is writing and the only reason I'm good at writing is because I wanted people to be able to understand what the fuck I was saying and I wanted to write good stories because I thought I'd never be able to make them in a visual medium, but that's it. I've never been able to commit to a serious routine, schedule, or anything. I just sit in my room online doing basically nothing.
Everything I try doing looks so daunting and impossible. I tried learning Source Filmmaker as a teen and I gave up immediately because it looked too complicated. I tried learning how to make my own games in game maker, gave up immediately and never touched it. Even something like drawing just looks so complex and impossible. It doesn't have to be something "worthy of being posted". A crude attempt is enough to post, IF IT helps you to be engaged with the activity. That's the hardest part, to keep yourself in the zone of drawing interest. People doesn't do shit anymore. They stare and finger screens on sleep mental mode.
What you're trying to do is to start up your mental engine, to be able to imagine things, drawing things does that to your brain, it makes your brain cells to spark and build shit, you create things in your head. To do that you need to know shapes, and "things". Drawing things creates a 3D asset in your brain that you can use to build your "ideas" whatever those ideas are. You need to train your brain to "see" things in your head.
Just draw whatever and build that creative engine in your brain anon. Keep that long enough and you will get gud as well.

I'm not talking good criticism like, "your anatomy is lacking so you should try x y and z" but more "the subject matter is creepy, your design is shit, the drawing is shit." I can handle I embrace biting criticism on everything else I enjoy (work, writing, cooking) but with art I don't know, it irritates me incredibly to be bluntly told "it's trash and you suck." I know the only revenge is to /git gud/ though.

"I fucking suck at this. I'm going to do 10 more." is ironically the exact mentality you want to have when you're starting out.

Take breaks and don't burn yourself out but realize that you're going to be making sketches that suck, but each time you do a new one try to identify what part specifically sucked the most and correct it.

Maybe the legs are too short. Make them longer in the next sketch. Something else will inevitably be fucked in that sketch, but that's okay focus on fixing small details at a time.

The trap lots of people fall into is they think that their sketchbooks are going to be full of amazing sketches you can share on social media and wow your friends when in reality the sketchbook is your safe haven to experiment and fuck around and see what works and doesn't work. You're not making fancy artworks, you're slowly channeling the suck out of yourself.

Good idea. I think Evinston's courses have you go through just the action line itself a bunch before you do anything else.
Which shapes work best for what limbs?
I know each limb splits into two at the joint + hand/feet and that the torso is made out of two blobs of weight. Otherwise no idea.

Nah, the whole "talented" people thing is a lie. Think of it like there's a bunch of visual rules and ideas you need to instinctively remember especially when it comes to proportions. A "talented" person may have gotten a natural headstart by recognizing some of these rules and guidelines off the bat but it takes practice and discipline to learn everything else.

You're frustrated because you don't know the visual rules. But it sounds like you're slowly taking notes of certain things and applying them and seeing what works. That's pretty much how all of this works. "Talented" artists are just people who learned and practice and naturally can instinctually understand proportion based on what they learned.

It's like driving a car. At first you're going to be anxious and paranoid, not knowing the right of way, what certain signs mean, just how to control your vehicle in general. It's all nervewracking.

But after years of driving you don't second guess how you're going to turn into a drive way or how you're going to back up into a spot. It becomes almost second nature.

As for the gesture shapes, you're already catching onto the fact that gestures are all about organic curvey shapes, especially the legs as that gives the impression of balance. Look up gesture C and S curves and see how those tend to be the common full body shapes.

The truth is there's no real correct way to plan out the shapes underneath, I'd look up how different artists do it and see what works for you.

I'm at lurking at work so I can't share any gesture studies, but I did the Millia/Guilty Gear sketch some posts above if that gives an impression of the body shapes I use.

not those anons but they already pointed out the things that i was going to said, so i will just complement saying that... remember that because we are using digital, is perfectly valid try several attempts and try different approaches, because is incredible more easy, so dont feel fear to failure if you think that some shadows or painting lead to a wrong end, or you feel that could be better, just try alternatives in new layers, if you have the time.
Sometimes you already have, the level, like, you can do it, but yeah firsts attempts dont always are good enough and that's perfectly fine, even seconds, or thirds haha. Also doing that could help you to make the critical thinking part about your process and decisions, that's also good even if you end with nothing to use.
That's what i wanted to say.

Is trying to draw a semi-realistic face along with the whole body on sketchbook/printer sized paper a bad idea? My faces always end up looking like a jumbled crappy mess. Heads usually being around 2 1/2 to almost 3 inches tall. Trying to avoid making faces overly anime/comicy.

Capturing likeness is not my thing atm. I drew the head much larger on the right ofc, I'm getting closer to having proportions/etc down, and working on the features. I'm going to try a different approach to constructing the head (I use the Loomis method, but I'm going to try a different way of applying it, feature wise). The right was also a relatively quick doodle/not intended to be anything. I made it worse by constantly erasing/trying to "fix." Facial features give me the biggest migraine no matter how much I try to make things look 3D at times.

Obviously my construction/etc need work, and these were a bit half assed sketches.

>> No.7149836

>>7149829
A big pitfall that I had to sort of learn to get over was being used to drawing portraits that focused on the face and then switching to trying to learn to draw the body.

Your goal is going to try to be to draw the head and body together as one unified thing. Often when an artist isn't used or comfortable with the correct proportions of a body they get a little caught up in trying to stretch or shrink proportions so everything they want to show is visible on the canvas/paper.

I think the biggest feedback I can give to your sketch on the left is that it feels like you drew it without setting up any guidelines or construction. I get the impression you maybe drew the face and then decided to continue further down. It feels like you zoned in on each part of the body (the head, the torso, the ass) and drew each individual part separately from the others and loosely connected them together.

If you want to make suggestive and sexy full body pin-up like sketches, you really need to learn the proportions of the body and how to construct the body with simple shapes.

If you can make simple shapes feel sexy, you're on the right track.

>> No.7149839

>>7149836

Yeah I did get a bit of tunnel vision Main thing that feels like it'll be the most difficult is shrinking the features down to fit the head on the page with the sketchbook pages being regular size. As well as avoiding making the features looking anime-ish.

Only way to make it not look like a smushed mess is to draw the whole body large on a large paper. Which I guess is the way comics do it, draw it on larger paper and it gets shrunk down digitally or something.

Practiced drawing boulders for drawing earthbending for Avatar

something to also keep in mind is that rocks are not like anime girls, in that you can't usually draw a single rock against a white background an call it a day
you commonly need to draw a bunch of them for a scene, so it would be better to practice drawing a plane in perspective that defines your ground, and placing a bunch of rocks on top of it

Thank you for the feedback! I've also noticed the issue with the white showing through, particularly when working on unprimed canvas. While I've experimented with gessoed boards, I found them too smooth for my liking, and I'd prefer to avoid the extra step of gessoing each canvas. Instead, I'll focus on applying more paint in my next piece to address the problem.
I'll take your suggestion and delve into understanding color temperature further.

Now doing life drawings it didn't suck up as much time as i thought it would, it didn't drain my soul.

Now here's my question this is gonna sound funny as hell, will this help draw with anime? I don't like copying anime because i feel like I learned nothing. "Anime" is no different than doing disney style cartoons, or pixar, or whatever other type of art "stylization". The people who do that are pros, who studied human and animal anatomy thoroughly to achieve a successful stylized design of that. Anime is not different. Simplification and stylization to allow a high volume production at a fast pace.
So yes, study anatomy and life drawing, so you can tweak that knowledge as you see fit on your projects.

Hi anon, I did a quick something on picrel, pay no attention to the color rendering and simple linework, but you can use it if you like anything of it. The main thing is that, you got yourself into a problem with the hand there. I get what you're doing placing the laser in the middle of the image to make it look cool, you did that with a purpose, the problem is the hand position. To keep that laser cutting the image in the middle like that, the only solution is to place the hand in the back like I did. Again I did a quick thing, but the place of the hand is what really matters. I hope it helps you to save your project in time.
And about the colors, I think the main element that makes darth maul cool is the HIGH contrast between the red and pitch black on his face. In your picture, that contrast is all washed out by the ambient red light of the laser blade. So, maybe you could do like I did and keep the contrast high on his face colors.
Good luck anon.

are you talking about his drawing manual course or the figure one from NMA ? the one in the the torrent is confusing because it has both the old and new versions all in the same folder jumbled together, can't figure out which to watch

sorry, Vilppu doesn't teach that stuff much in general.

He does have a drawing essentials course, for preliminary schools that you should have before you start figure drawing. It should help for drawing anything in general:

I did this because I saw that you would find yourself stuck with the hand thing and that sucks man. I know how that feels when it happens. It's horrible. Not to find a solution in time for something important you want to accomplish. I hope you get it done in time, and all ends well.

Oh the con won't be for many months ahead, that's why I'm doing it now so time won't be an issue. I'm the kind of guy that did his college assignments the day after I got them so I could loaf around during finals. At least for what's worth I think MOST of the hand and lightsaber layers are in separate layers, yeah it won't be a SUPER easy fix to tweak but I won't have to redraw the entire thing either, just group stuff together and draw some fixes.
Sidenote when saved as a TIFF file for printing it's 158 Megabytes, good lord at least it better print out nice. My laptop is having an anxiety attack any time I gotta alpha transform a layer

I'm not sure the one anon's exact process, but you could take a photo of your drawing, open it in photoshop, open the reference in a new layer above your drawing, and turn down the opacity so that the reference is see-through. then you can adjust the size of either layer to better gauge how well or poorly you did.

First and foremost you have to go through the entire collection of Loomis, then copy Bridgman at least 3 times and draw a couple thousand boxes while you're at it. Then MAYBE you can start drawing your cute/iconic anime characters, by copying Toriyama and Sakurai directly. And in a couple years you might manage to draw something half-decent from "imagination" (actually memory).

Just get a medium sized wacom intuos screenless tablet. Screenless tablets force you into a quite difficult learning curve at the start, but are perfect when you get used to them. They are unbreakable and comfy. For that money better get a good screenless brand like wacom. Play it safe. Get the medium size though, don't pick the small ones.

I know exactly where I went wrong there too I think. I deviated too far from the original circle on the front/top to make it conform to the facial features I was drawing while completely failing to adjust the back of the head to the changes I was making. I took some of your advice.

The bottom left and the bottom middle are drawn from reference (I think the bottom middle's perspective was a bit different than the plane I chose).

I tried to draw the rest based off the plane. That plane did help although I found I made too many with a flat top.

Try thinking about all front features of the face being parallel to each other. Brow line, eye line, tip of the nose, both lips, crevise of the mouth, end of chin. This way you will have much easier time placing them.

depends on what you want to get good at. if you want to be good at observational drawings, draw from life (and references aren't necessarily bad here either, imo). if you wanna be good at breaking down things into simplified three-dimensional volumes, practice that. if you wanna have fluid and varied line quality, practice that. if you wanna be a good portrait artist, draw portraits, etc. break down the fundies and subjects you want to get good at and focus on them. draw smaller subjects, bigger ones, medium sized ones; draw with a smaller time limit, draw with a bigger one, etc.

Draw it, trace it, analyse the trace, divide it into parts, analize those parts, the size and shape of the limbs, the shape of the shadows, the thickness of the lineart. Draw it again, or start drawing stuff and using "this" as the base and then compare it and make adjustments to make your style look more like that style you want.

to give an example of what this anon is saying, look at the outer eye (in this drawing the left one). It is way too big. Also the left cheekline or whatever you want to call it is way too much to the left, your guy has his head rotated to the left so this side should be a lot shorter.
Like he says, draw what you see, not what you think a face looks like (and use a reference if you're not). Hope my garbage 2 second ms paint sketch helps
