>> No.7134248

I don’t think forced perspective is a thing in art. It’s a term for movies where they dress the set or place actors in ways to trick the eye into thinking there’s perspective that isn’t really there. If youre drawing in some angle, that’s what you’re drawing. It’s not “forced.”

I don't think the top copy is so bad, but maybe you should try getting a more accurate copy by eschewing the Loomis construction method and copying the contours of the image instead. If you haven't done that before then read the first chapter of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain if you haven't already. Maybe try getting an accurate copy by copying the contours of an image, and then try drawing the same character from another angle with the Loomis method. Try doing that with the topmost image there; copy the contours as accurately as you can, spending as much time as it needs, and then draw the guy facing forward or some other angle with construction.

I've been unable to draw for a few days due to some bad mental issues, but I am coming out of it now but...damn this wasn't fun.

I feel out of practice with drawing head shapes, so my head shapes are OFF as fuck. I also struggled to draw her breasts, them always looking symbool and shit, which was frustrating to sort out and took me forever.

I often just struggle to figure out what I am doing wrong. I also find drawing people so boring, but I keep thinking you guys will scold me for not doing so.

Why did someone suggest I should study other pictures rather than draw from life? No one gave me an answer for that.

>> No.7134426

How do you guys bring yourself to sit down and draw? I guess it's just forcing an habit or you do it at your own volition?

>> No.7134432

>>7134426
Both.

Use volition to build a habit, one small piece at a time. Force yourself to draw for one minute a day, then two minutes, then three, etc. That's an extreme example, but generally if you get started with a small goal and achieve it, you're likely to repeat it.

Eventually it becomes a habit. Art is addictive and a huge source of dopamine. Eventually you'll have to draw to shake that feeling of malaise, and then you'll want to live inside the 'feeling' of drawing forever.

That's when you're hooked, for better or worse. Once it's a habit, it actually becomes more difficult to stop.

>is there something wrong with me?
not with (you), exactly, just your understanding of your emotions - probably. it's probably not the act of drawing per se that you hate when you draw something bad, but the fact that you want to draw something which is cool, beautiful, funny - whatever goal you happened to have in mind when drawing - and you didn't reach it. you hate your failure but rationalize it as hating the act of drawing itself. and obviously you're going to feel good to the extent that you reach your goal (though it isn't necessarily that simple). when first took up drawing 8 years ago I hated virtually everything I drew and didn't know what I was doing, so I quit in a bout a full month. I took it up again 3~ years ago and I generally enjoy the process - even if I don't necessarily like the finished work. once I started to see the "fruits of my labor" I found the whole thing to be more enjoyable and I felt confident in my ability to work towards my long-term art goals. sometimes seeing progress is what it takes to feel confident in the things we do, that's quite a human thing as far as I can tell.

>other times I think "How could a human being create this, an elementary school art project mogs this shit"
I get what you mean. I do not want to equate myself with you necessarily, but for most of my life I have had a tendency to be immediately critical of myself whenever I do something poorly. I don't mean this in a literal sense, but what has helped me has been to be "schizophrenic" about these negative emotions. it seems like you know what your long-term goals are, with whatever degree of clarity
>I know I want to do this
which is good, so you should remind yourself of this in those moments. but it might also be good to try (and keep trying, should you fail) to recognize these emotions when they arise as transient and contrary to your ultimate goal(s). perhaps it is impossible to snap your finger and get rid of them for the rest of your life, but you can build a habit of seeing them as merely passing thoughts/emotions and continue to work on your craft - that is realistically all you can do. it may seem weird, but I look forward to those moments, as it offers me another opportunity to better deal with those emotions and draw in spite of them. there will be good days, there will be bad: if you know your long-term goals, and you truly want to reach them, you will put in the work necessary.

Well... drawing a real life head/face isn't going to magically make you better at drawing an anime head... it will, however improve your skill at drawing overall and give you a better understanding of how to draw things. And for the most part the only difference between real and anime is the head. I am assuming you're referring to anime by "cartoony". Because western cartoons can have some wild proportions.

If you don't want to draw people then don't? Also, you're just new. You need to grind it out. If you, lets say 100 of those and compare the first to the last, you will see a huge difference. Even more so at 1000. Drawing is a life long hobby...

I finished this yesterday and I'm having a hard time feeling satisfied with it. What could I have done to not have the face and hands look so bad compared to everything else? It feels like every drawing I make, the hands and the face are always the parts bringing it down. It gets to the point where I would spend an hour on a single hand, adjusting and erasing over and over because I don't know how to fix what's wrong with it even when looking at references. After a certain point I just give up and half-ass it and move on to something else

use whatever resources you want, but a resource isn't invalid because one person used it and isn't good. take any moderately to well-known instructional art book or course, you will necessarily find people who still suck after having gone through it. perhaps the content itself is bad, but it could simply be that people haven't properly applied the teachings.

the cheeks depend on the style but in general the curvature starts to become more pronounced between the nose and mouth

Then I started watching anatomy videos like proko and scott eaton and following along using a good anatomy book like stonehouse and morpho
For perspective I just watched those 10 Marshall videos and read perspective made easy

Illustrator of Peanuts comics Charles Schulz would spend hours drawing objects in 3’s. Like a little cartoon carrot he would draw then attempt to replicate identically twice more. Then onto a little dog or ice cream cone or mail box or book or cake or castle or snail or a flag or worm or wedge of cheese or watch or baseball bat or yo-yo... you get the idea. It’s a good exercise to just practice making the lines you just made naturally, so train to make lines you intend. This is a slightly less boring version of attempting to draw circles over and over again.

Some of these books are solid, and I will never stop recommending Keys to drawing to beginners.
It's not wise to ignore legitimately good book recommendations just because 1 (one) person that recommends them isn't skilled and doesn't have good reputation.
It costs nothing to quickly scroll through the pages to see what they are about.

>>7135378
I wouldn't recommend a book with emphasis on construction to someone who most probably can't draw a convincing cube yet.

>>7135305
Ill advised. The less you have to worry about when you're learning to draw, the better. A lot of things have more potential to get in your way when you're drawing digitally - any kind of notification from your device, brush types/sizes, canvas size and resolution, eye tiredness from screen exposure, etc, etc, etc.
You can just try both and be aware of things like how much you get distracted, specific tools that are making your learning process easier or harder, overall productivity after a study session, etc.

>i harbor a lot of self-doubt and have no work ethic to speak of
I had a lot of self-doubt and was very lazy some years ago myself. I didn't have any skills that comparable to drawing and didn't have much direction, so I was very pessimistic about my prospects of getting good at art and quit very shortly after first picking it up. but I kept finding in myself the desire to make good art, and I reflected on the time I've been wasting and realized that I did not want to live with the reget of not trying to get good at art - whether I was fully confident in my ability to do so or not. and a few years later I can now say that I have been drawing quite consistently (the past 6 months I've been drawing every day) and have made clear improvements. I still am not that good, but I'm in it for the long haul. I don't expect to get halfways decent until I'm at least a few more years into drawing. perhaps if you reflected more on the larger extent of your life it will whip you into shape. I'm not that old - just turned 27 - but perhaps I'm older than you. that sort of thinking comes more often with age, so maybe it's just a matter of time for you (assuming you're younger than me of course).

Consider the following: it is impossible to learn a skill without doing it.
Second, just draw basic things until you have a better control over an implement so that you feel more comfortable when drawing. You will never draw well if you are relying too hard on your wrist or are too stiff.

TLDR, identify problem (lack of skill), consider options (draw anything, don't draw, focus on skill development ), choose option that produces desired outcome (able to draw).
