I think at your stage, the most important thing to practice and perfect is finding the center of parts perspective wise, to not make it look flat. For the over exaggerated, I am asuming it's stylized so not commenting, except for the right arm, which looks broken in that position

>> No.7126613

Ahahah, to once think that drawing was a skill closely linked to problem-solving, theories, insight: what a fool I was! It's all about visual memory, visual clarity, visual sense; an 'artistic instinct'. In other words, talent. The good artist doesn't think: the images come to him, almost entirely clear, the lines too, just as good melodies come to the good composer or improviser!

Not strictly a drawing question, but drawing's my latest interest so might as well ask here.
Where do you get the drive to aspire to do something, and to keep going even as you fail over and over again? I was mostly content just working a job and consuming media in my free time but living like this feels increasingly more and more empty. Is it something that must be inherently present (like the "talent" thing, I think that's what it really means), or can it be built up from nothing (and if so, how)? I think one of the biggest obstacles for me is not really having a clear goal in mind, there's no story I absolutely have to tell or anything else I would absolutely have to share with the world. I just want to draw some fan art or whatever both just for myself and to share with like-minded people on the internet. It doesn't get any more vague than that, probably.

Whatever some might say, drawing is CONTROL. Controlling where your hand goes, making it go where your mind wants it to go. It also includes knowledge, knowing where it should go.

Drawing is not that different from calligraphy, knowing the letters is the knowledge part, and controlling where the lines go is the control part. It's literally you improving your cognitive skills and psychomotor ability.
Plus, as you said, fun. But people completely ignore the implications of perfecting you basically mocing your hand and fingers in compliance with the brain.

Speaking of going slowly, I feel like I'm drawing way slower than I probably should. Anon, im the first replier. I think that you actually like to draw but there is something in your process or approach to art ("mindset") that is entering in conflict with you. At least it was like that for me
There is anything bothering you when you're drawing?

In my case, i was stucked in a confort zone and afraid to try new things. Two factors changed this:
1) I met IC's Big Sticky in general and also read a page that talked about my own situation (stucked in anatomy studies without progressing)
2) The most important: i learned by talking to my teachers what partial success is: basically, embrace the attempt even if the result doesn't come out the way you desire. You are learning more and more just by practicing and, after that, reflecting, which ultimately results in learning. If you don't try new things you'll remain at the same place

Sorry for sharing too much personal talk here. Well, there is anything bothering you? I hope being able to help you

Pretty much just confidence issues and a huge dislike for bad output.

It sucks to fail at something you care about. Even moreso when it's anything creative because it's like the worth of your soul is being weighed since most of what you draw will be at some level personal.
It also feels bad to realize how much time i've wasted and how much i continue to waste each day. It just never feels like "the right moment"
Thanks for sharing your experience though, it is pretty synonymous so i'm glad you managed to get past all that.

Tldr. I'm just being a little bitch about it.

Thanks to the anons who helped me yesterday, I think I've managed to draw a cuter face, although she looks slightly anxious to me now. I can't quite tell what magic is lost from anon's picture on the right to my second attempt, although it was only posted in quite low res.
Am I messing it up by showing both rows of teeth? Would it be better to have the inside of the mouth just all one colour?

For the past few days I've been struggling to keep motivated with drawing. I feel tired and have been prone to headaches lately, I think it's just due to the weather getting more humid lately which I struggle to adjust to.

I did these Loomis head practice but I couldn't be arsed to spend much time on them and I was too tired to really learn how to do detailed faces, so they look awful.

Should I take a break for a few days? I really hate to not draw but I don't think I can do much for a few days until I get out of this funk. I can do basic motor skill practice stuff but more complex stuff I don't have it in me to really do at the moment.

Looking at the image after finishing it I find it difficult/tiring to look at these areas and see the details within them. How do i improve my caligraphy quickly?
My penmanship is barely readable and i might fail out of finals just because they won't consider my writing legible.

Any books on that topic?

Wouldn't have happened without the webcomic.

This is my third sketch where I copied the reference image using a grid (not captured by Krita's recording docker for some reason) instead of tracing.

I think I can copy just about anything with this method, but I don't understand why copying is necessary for digital art.

What are the pros and cons of copying vs tracing in digital art? They both achieve the same result, but copying just takes longer than tracing.

pro beg tip: when using water colors, NEVER try to fully saturate area with pigment. simply dip the brush there and let the watercolor "magic" to create a pattern as it dries. it gives you free appeal gains. if it doesnt follow the form, just try to add pigments to 1 side to make the form

Haven't drawn a full piece in 4 months but having a lot of fun with the process on this one :) Feels good to finally enjoy art again.

Something I've learned over the years is that the only reliable way to get over art block is to leave it and block all thoughts of art from your mind. Eventually the creativity will run back to you.

I got side tracked with adding accessories and still haven't done the flats for the left side yet. I really want to exaggerate the cluttered raver aesthetic since I love rave fashion and history. Hopefully by the end I wont get lazy and will actually end up filling the blank purple space with things.

Legit question do you have any other books to recommend? Like, maybe something for figure drawing?

>> No.7129171

>>7129077
You won’t learn how to draw from imagination using either method. Grids encourage looking at small areas rather than the full image which is bad. People encourage copying not so you learn to be a xerox machine but so you learn to see more accurately and learn common shapes and the thought processes behind things.

Thanks for letting me know. The grid did help me keep the proportions of the figures in my sketches on point.

At this point, should I just move on to learning how to draw from imagination?

>>7129242
A grid is a crutch but as a total beginner sometimes you need it. Artists of olde would hold up a string with a weight on the end to make a vertical line to compare to, and using other landmarks like the physical edges of a photograph and making your drawing within a rectangle the same shape are also fair game
