**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Guys, is there basically a "guide" on how to use programs like clip studio paint to organize layers and stuff? I can get my sketches and lineart down, but then I get totally stuck and don't know how to actually use the program to turn my art into something digital that looks good. I don't know where to go besides just watching a 6 hour art stream, but I still don't know where to find those either.

Just a loose guide on how to think about hair shapes. You develop your own style of layering strands the more you study from other artists but it helps to know some basic underlying structure like this. Everything from where the hairline is, how hair falls and where it grows from are subjective, though they do adhere to things like form and gravity. Looking good so far, though. The face ended up really nice.

They're not bad! You're getting the hang of features relative to where they're supposed to. The problem now is consistency and keeping with proportions. I find the hardest part is imagining how the head turns and how things like the center line and other parts shift along with them but that just comes with understanding why those guidelines are there in the first place. They tell you where things should remain to seem believable. Remember that the head is a lumpy shape, not a flat surface. While the lines help tell you where things should go relative to everything else, you should also learn the 3d form of it too before anything else. Pros play with the proportions and break the rules, but there's always a baseline or fundamental that they all pull from, which is an irl head. Stay aware of those patterns as you continue to study other artists as well as from reference.

thanks!
is there something that would help me understand how the head turns and the center line? I tried doing boxes and circles but I feel like it gets harder for me that way... I know they're necessary but they're too hard imo
I guess I sound too whiny and I should just do it instead

>> No.7113418

>>7113405
You'll get the hang of it the more you do it, really. But here's a couple videos that I think are pretty easy to understand:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWEKKwKZtWU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjiCQfCMXow
Lastly, if you find the whole head too much at once then do it in parts. Try turning the circle with the center line, or a box with a center line. See how well you understand how to turn it convincingly. Then slowly add features like circles for the eyes, a simple shape for the ears. Then when you get the hang of that, add the bottom half of the face. Don't be too hard on yourself while practicing, the point is for you to understand it in the end, however way you need to get there. Keep at it!

That looks really good! But yeah a lot of the rest is seeing how other artists tend to bunch and group strands. It has to do with not just the type of hairstyle but things like implied hair thickness, length, windy conditions and most important, the silhouette and how that makes the character look appealing from any angle or situation.
I find animators the best people to learn from in this regard. They definitely think about movement more than anyone. So you can load up some anime scenes or look at genga, see how they deal with hair shape and flow, and they'll range from very simplified shapes to more detailed strands for closeups. Once you get the hang of it you can then up the detail even more by looking at illustrators or mangaka and see how they layer the hair. hello, im new drawing since i just got a huion tablet and I want to make it stick. I spent around 2h this morrning on copying this panel from psuedoharem. I tried to sort of construct the face since i looked up some videos about how to start and saw that I should be constructing the image roughly first then drawing it in. I notice a lot of mistakes ofc, like the proportions are just wrong and a lot of details didnt match up. THis leads me to a question, should I be spending a lot of time trying to do just one drawing like here where it took me 2h? Or should I do quicker drawings, where I just sketch for example and do multiple? any other advice is also appreciated

>> No.7115582

>>7115537
The point of construction is to make sure you have the proportions and forms right before you commit too much detail. I'd recommend doing several copies (of the same panel or different panels) at just the construction stage, really focusing on nailing the proportions and correcting your mistakes, and then pick the best sketch to polish. That way you get both types of practice, and likely a more satisfying result. Good luck!

nta but how do you find where the nose is when drawing other angles? usually I have no problem with it on a realistic face but its fucking confusing with anime cuz sometimes in angles like 3/4 you can see the nose bridge line, where in others you only see something like an indication of the nose or nothing at all

>> No.7115775

7115775

>>7115743
As you can see I still have some trouble with this myself but basically the dot is typically represents the very tip of the nose. Often you forget that the nose and mouth actually juts out of the center line of the face, like you would see more clearly in a profile view, so you have to think of the placement of the nose and mouth with that in mind. This can vary proportionally for every character design but vaguely follows the placement to a realistic face (eyes reach around the top of the ears, nose ends around where the ear ends etc.) but either way, if you find that the nose looks to be in the wrong place just check for the balance like this.
This video by hide explains it way better than I could, including placement of the eyes.

The hands need major reworking. Try making this pose in the mirror to see what I mean. The far hand barely looks like a hand (splay your hand in front of you as you read this), and the near hand is bent impossibly. The good news is that the hands are the only things that are obviously messed up in this image, and it can otherwise pass as authentic art from nipland. Nice work.

Should one push through and finish all drawings or focus on step by step until they reach mastery in each? Like if your goal was to reach this level of drawing, would it make more sense to do sketches until you could reach the same level of quality as the sketch shown (maybe that takes years), then do the same for lineart, then colors, or should you be trying to learn all stages simultaneously.

How can i make a more solid construction when drawing scenes like that one? Its usually better when i draw an character alone

My process: i drew the VP, sketched the bridge and then the characters over it, then made a rough of the BG. Materials: mechanical pencil for lines, 6B pen for shading.
Also, any other critique not related with my question is welcome

No, you’ll be a complete beginner at every new step if you do it one at a time and it’ll be forever before you ever do a complete drawing. Just do the best you can for now and complete your own works instead of just studying but focus on studying one main thing at a time that you’ll apply to your next original drawing. Then repeat with something else you study for the next time and so on. That experience making shitty completed drawings does add up over time and make it easier to improve.

so second day of trying to learn. I followed that anons advice to not just do 1 construction and to sketch things out before committing to more detail. Doing this makes me realize why the manga panel looks so much better, and one of the many reasons is the lineart. Its adds so much,vs mine which has 0 of that so it looks flatter and less detailed... Also proportions are still wrong, I drew her head slightly bigger then what it should be and the head shape is off too. Any advice is appreciated

for day 2 you're pretty good at copying already. my advice is to not overthink individual studies like this and just do a lot more of them. the cumulative experience of doing a lot of drawings will do more for you than any kind of analysis.

It helps to know what should be improved on in specific areas. You got a pretty neat style going and you have some appealing shapes here, but things like the eyes reading flatly and not shaped correctly for that angle, her twintails are crooked, the back of the head is looking a bit too bulbous, you could work on making her body fit the perspective more. Start with any one or a combination of those to practice. Rinse and repeat with each piece you make. Just don't get discouraged when it feels there's a lot to work on, it's a gradual pace. As long as you keep moving forward you'll improve over time and reach your goalposts and then move them further.
>>7119851
Looks like the right brush but maybe play with the pressure curve? The artist you're emulating might have different settings either directly on the tablet settings or the brush itself. Since your hand draws differently from whoever drew those, tweak it to mimic a similar enough result.

lol you should honestly ignore follower count for the sake of your own mental. Simply put, sex sells-- porn was a massive contributor as to why Blu-ray disks became the standard over HD DVD. If your goal is simply to become popular and/or make money, the actual quality of your drawings is not as big a factor as the subject matter itself. This is also why art will forever remain a hobby of mine, would probably wind up hating it if I drew for a living.

tl;dr just draw what you want, unless you're looking to go pro or something.

For the frontal part only
Take in mind that this is my first time criticizing one's work, so i may not provide you the best words. And after reading this i concluded that this is based on my perception and style of anime art. Maybe a video on youtube will provide better informations than this.
I think that you should keep in mind the proportion ratio of the body. For a young female is about 5,5 - 6,5 heads, 1/6 head, 2/5 torso and 3/6 or 35/60 (with the feet). Keep the hips larger then the chest and curve a little bit the cleavege/shoulder area. Also, i think that your image needs a bit more of tridimensionality. Check the shapes fundamentals to achieve that.
You have a good line and a good knowledge of the human body and its parts and made a nice drawing of the hands and feets, so i belive have a good ability on structuring parts of the body in general too.

how can i apply shading to anime style/learn how to shade anime? i want to know how to shade from cel shading like tv/movie anime to the shading of light novel artists and pixiv artists that mastered rendering (https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/89259577)) (https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/106403455)) or any other ilustrator that you may like

The same way you learn to shade anything else, by learning the forms and studying how light interacts with forms. Anime isn’t special or different from any other style in how light works. I guess you could play around with 3D anime models to learn simplified anime forms under different lighting conditions.

You'll find that sometimes artists will break rules to push stylization or better visuals. Raita does that all the time, that's what he's known for. In this case, you're right, her forehead and hair mass have been elongated, it isn't anatomically correct but it works, somewhat. Naoki Saito has a video on that very subject where he discusses distorting the face and eyes, though I can't recall the name of it right now.
