7123638 No.7123638 [Reply] [Original]

>What's a webtoon?
Webtoon is the ancient Korean art of scrolling comics. Instead of traditional manga/comic pages, panels are spread out individually for easier reading on cell phones.

>So they're just spliced manga/comic pages?
You can do that if you want, but they're fundamentally different for a few reasons. For example, panels tend to be drawn longer to fit phone screens, and traditional 2-page spreads are not possible to fit in scrolling format.

>Are there standard page sizes?
Technically yes, but it depends on which platform you post in. Naver Webtoons uses
800x1280px, but the site automatically splices & resizes images anyway.

>Do I have to make it in color?
If you want subscribers, yes.

>Why would I make one?
To be rich & famous, of course. All jokes aside, the pay is low if you're lucky enough to get hired in the first place, the deadlines are more brutal than the manga industry, and the average reader age floats around 11. But as a novel medium with a growing industry, it may still be worthwhile enough for you to experiment.

You can ask Webtoons what specifically has to be done to allow for those nine pages to be added back in. Worst case scenario, those nine pages just don't get included. Keep in mind that Webtoons is the most censorious of any hosting platform out there. You can still try a handful of other sites.

I usually don't say this but your work has heart. Even if you don't achieve the massive success that any artist desires, I think the most important thing is the learning that you will achieve in drawing it.
Don't make the mistake of "redrawing" panels. What's done is done and you must learn to let go. If you want to change something, do it when it doesn't exist yet, improve your skills for the future not the past.

Maybe not now or not even with this project but one day you will achieve the impact and all your past works are proof of your hard effort.

The problem with webcomic hosts is that invariably all the major ones tend to be Korean, especially the ones that are popular. This means that they are going to be more censorious than your average western Europe/N. American site. FFS Korea doesn't allow depictions of bikinis because they're too "lewd." For the Oi beach episode, Webtoon made me give Dana a tube top and remove any shots of cleavage, and to censor all ass and crotch shots with word balloons, but atleast i didn't have to delete entire pages. Medibang mangaplus creators has the worst censorship I encountered. After going back and forth with them for 3 weeks, I wound up having to entirely remove 8 pages from the beach episode. Before that, the comic was on a streak of getting 1k views a day and was in the top 15 fantasy comics. After they hit me with censorship, all views and momentum the comic had died.
For webtoon customer service, I will say they always responded very quickly and sent me screenshots of exactly which panels they wanted me to censor.

Penny is inspired by real life, an amalgam of all the anime nerd girls I knew growing up+ all the girls who come to my table at cons and buy Kitty Jenkins books. Hopefully this helps people self insert in to her more. My main challenge in making Zag a cool heartthrob guy without making him a nerd simp. In a lot of newer romance animes I've been watching like Signs of Affection and Hokkaido Girls Are Super Adorable, the guy is a complete blandly supportive nothing of a character. I'm checking out older romance manga to try and avoid that. Writing husbando characters is a challenge because as a guy I've mainly focused on writing waifus for the past several years. It's the safest option. Readers can "take" all the emotional support without having to really care about the dude as a character. Having him have strong inclinations or personality would only limit the demographic reach, so you instead get a milquetoast man.

Not necessarily, there’s a number of things that keep Webtoons engagement low. One reason the engagement is higher on Tapas is more likely because that site, from what I hear, inflates the views so that every time you click on the chapter or look at it, that counts as a view. But, Tapas generally is more friendly towards audience and creator engagement as opposed to Webtoons. But also, you may have a point that this isn’t a genre that the main demographic of Webtoons doesn’t consume compared to what is out there (romance). But that doesn’t stop other Webtoons like World in the Waves and Goodnight Dana that don’t really have a focus on romance but have great story and art that reach their audience. I think the bigger problems come from the title (never changed it from its early days in 2020), the lack of colored pages, and the art style itself.

I believe we all have stories we want to tell, but choosing between one format or the other is a significant decision. Considering all the disadvantages that webtoons present, it's quite understandable if someone decides it's not worth it.

I think it all comes down to this, because I see no problem with the artstyle, I really like it.
However, choosing fantasy as your main tag is probably not helping much, because people browsing through the fantasy section are looking for angels, demons, dragons, and that sort of thing, so when they read "giant robot" in the summary, they get turned off.

I had never really been into webtoons before, but earlier this month on a whim I decided to click on your comic. I love it, and it just might be the reason I regained my interest in drawing actually creative things. I really like your style. It's very expressive and appealing. I like how it's approachable in its simplicity, how the underlying 3D forms are apparent making it easy to study. I wanted to figure out how it worked so I did a few studies, and to my surprise it was actually a lot of fun to draw something stylized. My sketchbook before was filled with little more than anatomy studies and floating heads. I was so focused on the constructive aspects of drawing that I forgot that gesture is what breathes life into a character. I think I want to make a webtoon now. Not sure what about, but someday it'll come to me. So, thanks! May the wind blow strong in your sails.

At first it looks like a scam, there's no point on using that instead of Kofi or Patreon. But, not everyone has a patreon account, and creating one takes some extra time that might deter people from giving you money.
It also takes some pressure off your shoulders because there's no expectation for extra content, which people take as a given on patreon (I don't know if the same applies to Kofi, I've never used it)

Working on my webcomic called 'young hoodlum' its an easy e meets bart simpson type character that fucks all the girls and smokes his opps. I'm still trying to decide what setting to use, I'm debating between
1991ish
-get to use early 90s rap aesthetic, with sega genesis consoles and aerobics instructor fashion
or the pandemic era
-open playground, I can put masks on unimportant characters etc.

I'm debating whether to use Erika Eleniak (1990 version) or Jessica biel (2001 version) as the model for the girl who gets fucked. What I know for sure, is the story starts out with hoodlum going door to door shoveling know, and ends with him balls deep in a pawg, in an unfinished basement.

It's garbage if you intend to do scrolling comics

-It accepts the webtoon format, but most people using that platform don't like that format to begin with.
-I don't know why, but you have to like a chapter before leaving a comment. Also, it's not possible to simply leave a comment from it's app, so people usually don't bother. This means, even less comments than on webtoon.
-The app is shit, you can't get a single notification whenever someone updates, you have to check it out manually. So people will forget you even exist very often.
-No revenue, outside of the monthly awards.
-You can't win the monthly awards with scrolling comics as far as I know.

I'd just like to know a few things from anons who have more experience working with the webtoon site specifically. Webtoons and Tapas outright encourage you to state "hey, the uncensored versions are available elsewhere," or to say "you can get it privately as a subscription reward" etc etc etc. Just dont mention the competition's name directly, they may get you for that. there's nothing wrong with posting on webtoons but you should definitely not just post it there. go to any site you can and be fine with it not getting as much attention on those other places because webtoons can delete your comic whenever they want with no warning, and then you'd have lost your entire audience if you only posted there.
the op has other non-webtoons comics hosting places, but if you want something more personal then comicfury has a toggleable traditional/scroll view, and there's also rarebit if you want to host it on your own website (with neocities if you want to do it for free).

True, but people get a lot more picky when you're not an original being promoted by Webtoons. Another comic that got big was I'm the Grim Reaper and that was in black and white to start, but then changed to color when it was picked up so even the company seems pretty against it.

>>7184914
It could, but Webtoons audience often want to see things that are specifically Korean, in the same way /a/ only wants to see things specifically Japanese. I think it might be able to win weebs over because of name recognition, but they're already fine with reading manga as is so that seems unnecessary, so the main audience would probably just be phone-addicted kids who don't want to zoom in when they read manga on their phones.

I can think of at least one other black & white original, but for the most part I would agree that making your comic in color is the best idea, unless you have a strong reason to keep it black and white.

I think the good thing about infinite scrolling style webcomics that webtoons popularized is that even on desktop it allows for different artistic techniques.

Like with the comic you mentioend im the grim reaper you would sometimes see stuff like vertical panomaras in the comic

For most webtoons, the answer is somewhere inbetween.
For a lot webtoons, and i mean A LOT OF THEM, they use the 3d modelling tools that come with clip studio paint. They have this 3d character models that they can trace over that comes with CSP. They also use stock 3d backgrounds from CSP a lot. You'll notice that if you look at the background in most webtoons, some objects will look a little low poly.
Some comics do stuff a little like copy pasting. The Lookism webtoon tends to trace or copy paste earlier scenes in the webtoon a lot. I'm not sure how much of this is laziness, and how much of this is intentional self reference. There are times when its clearly the latter, like when one character is imitating the fighting moves of another.

But with that said, some webtoons artists don't use those shortcuts and actually are drawing the same head over and over. I don't think its common, but I can give a few examples.

Lone is one that has nice art, if solely for the fact that it doesn't blatantly using 3d models as a crutch. The art style at the start is a little stronger than later on in my personal opinion and uses a little more texture. Later on it loses that, but its still good.

The blurb of the webtoon is:

>Born without magic in a world full of witches, Lone is determined to claw her way to the top of wizarding school if it kills her -- and it just well might! After a deal with the devil improves her magical aptitude and leaves her with a parasitic demon lord stuck to her forehead, Lone's dream is finally within reach. Now she just has to survive long enough to graduate high school...and help Lord Beelxaroth retake his rightful throne as King of Hell so that he'll finally get out of her hair.

Here's another one where this happened to me. The thing is that if you forget to read some webtoons for a while that isn't totally generic, you'll forget most of what happened and have to start against from the beginning. The comic is finished, but I have to read it from the start again, because I didn't keep up.

https://www.webtoons.com/en/fantasy/four-leaf/list?title_no=1454

The start of the comic is a bit surreal, playing with the question of what is real and what is a dream. The blurb doesn't really help convey whats going on there, so i didn't post it.

(No the title of the comic has no relationship to 4chan, thats pure coincidence).

That. The "surprising" turnover of webtoons into K-Dramas and more recently anime is because they're paying the studios far more than they can afford for adaptations that they otherwise wouldn't make just to get people back into reading on webtoons, which is why they're seemingly so stingy for a multi-billion dollar company.
Like, say what you will about YouTube, but they have a million and one features that most other sites don't in terms of video hosting and they are clearly far better than any alternative. Webtoons on the other hand is literally nerfed Tapas, which is 1/10th as popular but at least lets all creators use simple things like gifs and not needing to scroll through a comic to read the comments, and has its own forum and so on.

They spend this much and expect it to come back to them so they can be the Korean WSJ, but even the big names like Lookism aren't close to pulling Kagurabachi numbers so it's not working out financially. At this point what else do they have but the fact that everyone calls infinite canvas vertical comics Webtoons? I too have seen that only Original webtoon authors complain.
I think it's a question that only concerns the Originals. For us Canvas I don't think there are any rights problems.

But I'm ESL maybe I'm wrong, let me know.

>You draw a character once and the AI tool convert it into 3d then another AI tool convert it back to 2d so you can move your drawing instead of drawing it over and over again.
A naive person would think that they're doing it so the creators can have a break and enjoy life but in reality they're doing that so creators will pump out extremely long chapters and multiple webtoons at the same time so the company can finally be profitable.

New cosmic crush pages. I did these 4 pages as the intro with an opening narration. It's a Penny dream sequence, that's not how she actually meets Zag

In the age of short attention spans, I thought it would be better to start the comic this way with Penny's fantasy of meeting an alien rather than the penny as a child watching Zim flashback. Those pages will come after this part.

I'd like your opinions on this- would it be best to wait and release the first chapter as my original planned one shot script, so readers get the full intro at once, or would it be good to split in to 3 6-7 page chapters for webtoon? I'm planning on releasing the whole thing at once on manga websites, but I know webtoon generally has shorter chapters.

I penciled it badly and when I ink it, it won't be that heavy. She does wear emo eyeliner though and also has dark circles under her eyes from lack of sleep

imo split them up.
if you reformat the panels of 6 normal pages to be webtoons-style one panel per page, then with an average of 4 or 5 panels per page normally, stretching them out would be something like 24-30 webtoons panels which is what the site recommends for canvas series' anyway (as long as you're uploading weekly), and if you're just posting them as whole pages with no formatting changes, then the biggest issue would be the text being a bit small, but there are a few webtoons out already that make little to no changes to their pages and still have an active readership on webtoons like heartstopper.

I draw, I ink, I scan, I clean up the linework on photoshop, simple as. Usually I don't have to do that many digital changes to the linework, only if I mess up inking or notice something looks really bad after I scan it.

Draw every character individually.
Tune scanner and then filter off most dirt.
Still push bunches of lines around because scanner sees things differently.
Composit everything in panels.
t. can't draw

That is bullshit, I used to do it in 2021 and never went anywhere, it's barely better than follow for follow with other creators.
What you really need is to become an influencer/clown and do everything for virality.
