They're about to teach an AI class at my art school. The students who told me about it are ripshit. Ethics, stolen media for generation, etc. etc. I feel like the writing is on the wall though, I don't see AI going away and if you can't beat 'em join 'em. I'll have graduated though so I won't get to take the class unfortunately.

Ha! Art schools continue to be shit. Why teach a student anything, when they can just pump out the slop with AI? Art Schools sucking dick and only teaching talentless hacks is old new, even Richard Williams commented on it.
You'd be better served just spending the money on some art books, some materials, and learning yourself.

UK art universities are some of the most commercially oriented in comparison. you get starbucks and salesbury on campus, which have active contracts with the uni, spotify trucks and other franchises coming once a year. the students are told that they are "government approved artists" after finishing their 3 years and they are all in debth with some 10K fees (you only have to start repaying the state loan as soon as you earn a certain threshhold). the UK is influenced directly by whatever goes on in US unis and they will copy all the debates and drama.

You would really be a stooge to allow this without demanding some form of compensation/enforcement of a contractual right for enriching them. Students who take these classes and contribute (for free!) are morons - absolute, 100% morons. Don't give your art, labour, and effort away for free! Most times student led protests are a bunch of marxist monkeys parading around novel-social issue 'X', but this is something arts students and professionals should be collectively fighting tooth-and-nail over. It is 100% worth the battle.

"Dear Students,

We are writing to inform you of a significant development in our Fine Art course at the university. As part of our commitment to innovation and the advancement of artistic education, we are introducing a new requirement that involves the utilization of student artwork for training artificial intelligence models. This initiative aims to provide our students with a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and technology while enhancing their own artistic skills and understanding of the intersection between art and technology. Your artwork will be used exclusively for the purpose of AI model training within the university's academic and research programs. It is important to note that the rights to the artworks created by students will remain the property of the university for a period of up to ten years after graduation. This decision has been made to ensure the continued development and improvement of our AI models, as well as to protect the integrity and confidentiality of the training data. We understand the significance of this requirement and the potential concerns it may raise. Rest assured that all necessary measures will be taken to safeguard your intellectual property and ensure that your artistic contributions are respected and utilized responsibly. We believe that this integration of student artwork into AI training will not only enrich your educational experience but also position you at the forefront of the evolving art landscape, where technology plays an increasingly vital role. Should you have any questions or require further clarification regarding this new requirement, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Fine Art department or the university administration. Thank you for your attention to this important announcement.

Cordially,
Head of fine art dep. univ. prof. dr. dr. Angela R. Gladstone MBA

Art schools everywhere are shit. Japan and France are better because you have more chance to meet real masters and making connection with them. In term of academic knowledge, China teach them the most but they're too serious about it their art became soulless.

Their YouTube channel looks fun, but pretty vague on what the course teaches, if anything. It's all well and good having a studio space around art friends, where you can chat and draw, but for the whole course? I would like some instruction please and not just tasks. That's why I didn't pursue an art/illustration degree. Now, compare and contrast with something like the YouTube channel for Art Centre. It seems the students there are actually getting a solid art education. And, for the price of an Art Centre degree, they had better.

There's a real glut of art schools in the UK that teach bearly anything like that, unfortunately if want that education you have to either go state-side, look to the continent, pay and arm and a leg for bespoke online classes, or try the true DIY approach. Sean Sevestre, who posted on conceptart.org back in the back went to Edinburgh Art College and he wanted to be taught all the things that you wanted to be taught. But, in the life drawing class they had to draw the model, then (paraphrasing here) with the left-hand/non-dominant hand, then with their eyes closed, then cut it up. He thought fuck da noise and had to convince his parents to give him 2 years to learn how to draw by himself and make his own curriculum.

Literally the only university that has anatomy as a core part of the curriculum is the Ruskin, which is part of Oxford university lol.

Illustration is better than fine art, but a concept art degree would be better. Leeds Arts Uni has a lecturer that's actually a really cool creature designer. Teesside is not bad, either. And, they actually get industry briefs. There's also escape studios.

There's also ateliers, but most running are either in London or Edinburgh and you can't take a loan out for them and have to self-fund. Even since GCSEs British art education has pissed me off. The majority of art teacher are subpar draughtsmen, therefore can't impart knowledge onto their students. Sad, but true.
