If only I knew. He had tremendous drawing skills, plus great facility with the pen and brush. Nothing looks over-worked. The lines have an energy that conveys movement and action. Frazetta was doing funny comic strips and using ink from a young age (14 or so). He also learned to paint subjects realistically. I think these two sides of his training (comic exaggeration and straight realism) feed into one another. Look at Boris Vallejo's paintings of similar subjects (barbarians, etc.). They look like bodybuilders in costume posing for a photo. Everything is rendered exquisitely, but there is no movement, no sense of danger. A Frazetta painting feels alive. He knew where to render detail and where to keep things loose, suggestive or sometimes even totally abstract. You can see that in his inks as well. Look at how the lower part of the lion's body fades into a black shape that merges with the grass and extends down and around the figure. It's beautifully designed.

Yep. I picked up a brush pen and some dip pens and started doodling with them, and every line that came out of them was pure SOVL. Digital inks on the other hand suck. You just don't get the same kinesthetic feedback from a stylus as you do a physical mark making implement.

Keyman: The Hand Of Judgement's creator Warai Naku switched to digital at a point during the manga's run and there was a *very* sharp drop in quality as he was getting accustomed to them. His artwork returned to its original quality on the macro level but the actual linework and hatching at the micro scale never quite got back to the incredibly beautiful levels of meticulous detail that it had in the beginning of the manga. Although perhaps that was as much to save time and health as it was the fault of digital inks being less intuitive to use.

So what are our thoughts on digital vs traditional inking? My initial thoughts on looking at these images are that obviously traditional is the superior medium, and that digital is just convenient for me and what I do.
That said, I do think it's possible to make digital look really good on its own. I believe studying traditional artists should really serve as a guide for digital artists. So instead of trying to emulate their methods or practices one-to-one, we should apply their knowledge to our medium in a way that is uniquely digital - enhancing the digital look - without sacrificing quality.

Something I should also mention for digital artists. I think the quote: "Comparison is the thief of joy" really applies here. I may never develop inking skills as incredible as Frank Booth for instance because of my choice of medium, but I can get good enough to be better than the average weeb artist that lazily distances themself from lineart because it's "boring."

it takes a long time to color properly. the problem is its automated and takes little to no skill to let the program make all the decisions on your gradient auto fill digital sludge these days. almost all colored art looks like dogshit because its so half assed and easily done. majority of "professionals" have no clue how actual light sources work, how light reflects, how the color of the room can affect the mood and coloring of every object in it and so on. they dont even consider it when doing any work. light it up in blender, move it around until they get something generic they recognize and then add the colors to the greyscale objects they just made. its retarded seeing how bad every fucking piec eof shit looks.

its not a comic book thread, but modern digital colorists have destroyed that industry moreso than any other group. the older generation were actual artists that just did coloring for work. modern ones are below minimum wage outsourced to brazil, but all fucking trash. get it done as fast as possible type of shit. actively destroy the art they color at every turn. just add lens flares and other digital shit on top and done. its rather infuriating to see. theyd sell more comics if they just did black and white versions. you can see quick comparisons when they do updated old covers for reprints. stuf flike amazing fantasy 15 for spiderman first appearance redone in digital coloring etc. looks hideous in comparison.
