7102833 No.7102833 [Reply] [Original]

The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/))
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

The only real mention is that of "graphic" or "gratuitous" violence, but they leave that intentionally vague so they can pick and choose what they want. It also depends on the genre your manga is - they seem to grant more leeway if it's a genre that violence is to be expected (as opposed to say, a regular BL/GL story). Blood seems fine regardless.

I agree with that anon you're responding to, they don't need to be made so early -- it's basic board etiquette to avoid clogging the catalog up with copies of a thread for long, but it doesn't matter that much and OP drama is a particular kind of gay general shit that I don't want to perpetuate so I never brought it up.

>but I want to avoid /mmg/ developing the sort of personality circlejerk some other communities have

I don't think this will happen (at least not with the regular anons); we just share our work and love for making comics and manga here without any expectation of fame, money, or whatever from this place.

While the other communities were killing each other over drama, deluding themselves with dreams of fame, and closing themselves into discord groups so they can scheme against the other discord group or target someone they simply didn't like, we just kept drawing.

/mmg/ has helped me a lot to improve, and I like this place because anons will read your work without any bias or commitment (well, almost at least). I swear, there are some places where it doesn't matter how good you are; they will treat you like trash and will only dare to read and say something good about it if you suck their balls. Anyway, the artistic environment has always been full of those people, but I didn't expect the comic niche to be insane like this.

Drama feeds on people replying. Even when retards try to hijack shit, if you just ignore them they eventually lose interest. The key isn't to argue with them and ride their shit, it's to tell them to fuck off and then ignore them after that. I'm worried that my character design philosophy (spiky and circular shapes, varied and elaborate costume designs, old JRPGs/classic mecha/western fantasy influences, slighty more manlier male characters than what you usually see in modern japanese entertainment but still not Hokuto No Ken/Capeshit level) could be perceived as "outdated" and "wannabe old anime" by the young people who are more used to the more minimalistic, uniform, "grounded" and less polished character designs in series like Chainsawman, JJK or AOT.

As someone who is mostly influenced by mid 90s to early 2000s art styles but also digs good modern art styles like Made In Abyss or, from what I've seen, Gachiakuta, are there any actual noticeable differences in character design philosophy between current and older manga, or is it more related to the overall setting and tone of the story out of all things?

There definitely is a noticeable shift in overall character design now then there was in older manga. That said, I don't think anyone will criticize you or call your work "outdated" for wanting to look like a particular style. If it's style that YOU like and works for your manga, that's all that matters. Go for it, and don't budge for anyone.

I think one of the easiest ways to have your work look generic and fall under the radar would be to do what you just described and tailor your designs to a more "modern" audience. Not to mention, it would be an extremely obvious way to have your work look outdated in a couple years. (Which is all the more reason to go with the style that you want, since everything is going to be outdated eventually anyways)

How do I go about designing outfits for a magical/fantasy setting? Or in general just really fantastical outfits that aren't too grounded in reality

What sources of fashion should I look to? To reference and mix and match together to come up with interesting outfit designs.

For example how would one design this outfit? Where would one source reference material?

>> No.7103972

It's literally just history + whatever shit you made up. That costume is a good example. It's just archaic japanese garb + a weird belt/spikey pauldron thing. Look at almost any fantasy costume design and you'll see it yourself, it's all just history + a bit of spice. If you can get more creative than that, go right ahead.

>> No.7103973

A lot of outfits like those are legitimately just a sort of fantasy spin on historical Japanese clothing. Especially since Inuyasha is a bit of a fantasy period piece to begin with.

Just look at world history and historical outfits from different regions, and add your own embellishments to them.

Great game, but it's more the plot. Once you die, you need to cross the land of the dead to get to the after life. It's a 4 year journey.

Depending on how good a person in life you were determines on how you get there. You can afford a sports car, an cruise, or a special train ticket.

did you like it? if you did then that's what really matters. if you don't like it all that much then it'll be harder to convince yourself to keep going, and others telling you it's good isn't going to be enough to keep you moving in the long run.

on my end, i think 17 pages in 10 days is definitely great for anyone practicing art, so don't feel as if you can't spend a bit more time on clean up and refinements. your lines are fairly messy which isn't an issue if that's the style you're going for, but i think it would be worth it to try putting more focus on using the lines to make clear forms and then letting the mess be a flair in addition to that, because based on the pages you posted the lines tend to get mixed into the characters.

still though, if you can do 17 pages at all i'm sure you'll have the motivation to continue and keep growing, so nice job making anything at all! don't push yourself to keep up this pace, though. don't procrastinate, but don't focus on how fast you work if nobody's paying you to do so.

17 pages in 10 days a great accomplishment, it just I think we have a difference in definition of "finished page".
This in the 2nd page of my prologue, and I haven't added sound effects yet, so its still not done, and it took about 2 days.

detailing is done with a ballpoint pen and Tombow fudenosuke
the panels and speech bubbles are Kuretake Zigs

I never wanna live a life now without them
I know what you mean with the gelly rolls too
I have that and then this other pen, it's supposed to be like a white permanent marker was gonna use it for the outlines of these cars
but I tested them to see if they'd even show on the ink
the gellyroll was kinda light but I figured I have no other choice so we'll see how it goes
the other pen was just smearing the ink, so it was just making grey

Comparing yourself to a pro needs to be done in moderation. It's great to see what they did for XYZ portrayal, but too much and you start having unnecessary stress. You're comparing yourself to somebody who has done this for untold years and likely has 2-6 assistants... whereas we're all over here doing fly-by-night solo operations and posting on a Tajikistani goat herding forum. Looks pretty good for the most part. Especially the hair and the detailing on the second panel. Only two things I can say are to try and make the word balloon stand out a little more--its so small that it really gets lost. Part of that is because it creates some tangents with her hair, I think. Second is...her face looks very flat with very little emotion in it. The eyes need more volume to them, or something. As it stands, it sort looks like it came straight out of a "How to draw anime" book from from like 2004.

It's supposed to me reminiscent of Clamp's art style, specifically Chobits. Which is an extremely early 2000's looking series. I usually don't draw in this style. This is what my normal artwork looks like.

Looks very good! Gives heavy Keito Koume vibes. I'm assuming that small word bubble is going to be a mutter or other small phrase so it's fine being that small. Once you get to it, I would recommend choosing a good font for it to make it clear that it's different from a normal dialogue bubble. The linework and detailing also look very good. The only thing I would suggest is that the shading on her eyes seems off. Usually on anime eyes, the darker part is toward the top while the lighter parts towards the bottom, but you have it reversed. If it's lighting that's causing this, it would seem redundant to have an accent light on top of the already lighter part. I suppose it could depend on eye color, but in monochrome it looks kind of weird.

I am flatter you think so, but if you are writing a comic, don't wait until you feel your art is good enough, because storytelling is a different skill set than illustrating it, and you need to develop that skill by telling many different stories. your art skill itself just need to be effective enough to communicate it, you can learn what you need when you found out what you lack. The problem with your question is that there's all types of redheads. Even something like "dark red" is going to have variation, and that's just talking about natural redheads and not including people who dye their hair. Besides, if you're doing everything in monochrome then what you're really asking is for a darker grey. So just pick something that'll help you get to that color.

I've been working on manga for most of the last 5 years and I rarely feel comfortable when I'm not just burying myself in work
I took it too far once, and this is part of my finally breaking out of that horrid slump I threw myself in from there, but 2 or 3 one shots added on to this is hardly anything I couldn't do

I've seen your work over the years, and no offense, but I don't think this "work on a million random one-shots at a time" method is leading to improvement. I think dedicating all of this time and energy into a single work would be more beneficial to you right now than continuing to split your attention between 3 different projects. Dedicate all that effort into pushing yourself to make one really good comic at a time, because from what can tell, you've only been pushing yourself to make MORE stuff, rather than BETTER stuff. Sorry for the unsolicited advice.

if I focused just on the one thing maybe I'd see way better improvement
but I'm also the kinda person who's sorta, scared... of the idea at this point
I have a way I like my stuff to look, a way I'd like it to look as it goes
but I'm scared that as I move along it'll slip away from what I want to something I don't like
maybe it's like, I dunno, a sorta self sabotage

>I've tended to believe in the simple idea of getting better by doing, if 1 is good, 50 will be better
That's definitely true to an extent. That extent, I believe, is the point at which you're focusing purely on volume. Focusing on volume too much is bad, focusing on quality too much is bad. You need a balance. The whole point of making a lot of stuff to get good is to practice the thing you want to be good at. Right now, you're only practicing juggling making a bunch of throwaway one-shots at once. I assume that throwaway one-shots are not your end goal here, so I recommend changing up the approach.
>but I'm also the kinda person who's sorta, scared... of the idea at this point
That's a good sign you should probably tackle it then. If you're just comfort-zoning by spamming yourself with one-shots you won't have to feel bad when none of them are really any good. It's scary focus on one thing and make it as good as you can, because it shows your current limit, so you're avoiding it. I get it, but it's a challenge you need to face if you want to improve.
>but I'm scared that as I move along it'll slip away from what I want to something I don't like
And that's another thing: I think you're far too married to aping Tagami's style. What you do now, and what you've been doing for as long as I've seen you work, is make a poor imitation of a much older artist's work. I understand having a style you like, but you're not letting your own style develop. Maybe I'm wrong here and you're not actively trying to stick closely to Tagami's drawing style, but it's clearly where you started and in 4 years you haven't branched out very far at all. I think this is not a good thing.

This is why I recommend focusing on one thing at a time, whether that's a series or still one-shots. It feels like you're avoiding having to come up with your own solutions to the problems one encounters when trying to make something the best it can be. But I say that from the outside looking in.

Breaks are mandatory for productivity, even if those breaks come in the form of just not doing anything for a while or going to get something to eat. Personally, I prefer to read or listen to music in my downtime, but I rarely play videogames anyway. When I do play videogames, it's when I don't intend to draw for a while; they have this habit of engaging all parts of your brain and putting you in "gamer mode", increasing your reflexes and knowledge of crime statistics, but shutting out that part of your mind that's productive in other ways for a little while. I use videogames to wind up in the afternoon expecting to draw in the night, or vice versa, but I never go right from one to the other.

This might sound weird, but I think you improve at drawing if you take breaks from it. Your brain basically cools down from thinking about drawing, which allows you to view your environment a bit more differently. As a artist, I look at thinking and pretty much draw it in my head. But if I stop drawing, I can actually look at my environment a bit differently and appreciate it more, which in the long run, helps with my visual bank.
Simply having a break will help improve your ability to draw imo. You allow your brain to stop processing things a specific way and when you come back to drawing, you are not only more fresh but more expressive.

You should probably be be using fills more instead of this rough scribbling style of rendering. Scratchiness can still work but most cars are pretty shiny and sleek (even banged up old shitboxes) so what you've got going on just isn't going to convey that. It can still be done pretty simply with some fills + spot hi-lights (which you can create either by not filling them in or with whiteout after the fact).
The general shape is pretty off too, but that can be forgiven with more confidence in the stylization and better rendering. You mgiht want to give just tracing a ref a couple of times then move on to applying that to check-and-draw practice. By my understanding most of the time when it comes to drawing cars, like in Initial D, the authors often just had an assistant trace a photo from a catalog anyway.

>> No.7109658

>>7109650
I unfortunately don't have catalogs or assistants
the scribbling is just to convey that it's a black car, this is just practice
the shape is the biggest concern, I thought it would be fine but then the inking started, just gotta be more conscious of it when the real thing starts

>the scribbling is just to convey that it's a black car, this is just practice
Practice of what? Half-assing a drawing? I'm sorry, I don't understand the purpose of even conveying that it's a black car if you just wanted to practice the shape of the vehicle. And given how you render it will be how you convey that shape, I'd say it's still important to get that rendering right. I read your chapter and you only even bothered to try rendering a car a little bit once, and it was with a similar scratchy hatching look. I think if you should aim a bit higher in the next chapter.

the first part was really a joke
obviously I use the internet for reference
as for why I'd bother doing the scribbling, yes it's just practice for the shape, I could have just left it at that, but I wanted to put the black, it serves no purpose, just my own interest.
as for rendering, as far as I can see in series like Initial D or Wangan Midnight, if a car isn't usually stationary or a giant focal point to a page, they usually have body lines and values removed for the sake of speed in work
I'm having trouble thinking of the way to say this next part without it feeling stupid, but
well, there's the argument that of course actual manga artists will have deadlines that tend to necessitate those subtractions, and no I of course don't, there is the potential expectation that I should take advantage of that to render the cars better all the time, but I don't personally see the need to do so
I like the subtracted look, and I don't have the tones or general car drawing ability of them or their assistants to make it like quite as good and sleek, but I'm figuring it out
this isn't like, "I've been drawing shit cars for most of a year, now let's do something to make them good"
I'm doing this work as "I never really draw cars, but having the ability would be nice, let's do something that'll force me to do it and make it passable as a starting point"
of course I plan to do better with each coming chapter, but I think we might be on slightly different ideas of what better might mean

>> No.7109770

>>7109762
for this work no I'm not being too serious, not like I don't care in general, but more like, the point is not to care
what would be the quickest way to explain...
I used to be a real freak with productivity in manga, like 5 pages a day, with the same quality here, relative to my ability at the time of course
like working 2 or 3 things at a time sometimes
in mid 2022 I even worked on 5 works at once
as pointed out earlier, working like this prolly doesn't make for the best work, I wouldn't even a lot of them were good looking back at them, and I tend to get criticized for my writing over my art as a result
early 2023 I let this insanity get outta hand and tried to work on like, 20 things at once, I tried my damndest to make them all good too, I got them all sketched, like 300 pages in total over the course of about 3 months, even had some lineart inked
then I crash hard, realizing I didn't think a lot of it was valuable, trashed about 240 pages of work, anything else was super short nothing or stuff I wasn't willing to let go of no matter what
ever since I was having trouble working on manga and whatever I did manage to do felt lackluster in comparison
someone elsewhere recently mentioned getting a little sketchbook to just make a comic they didn't have to care too much about, alongside their actual work, and I thought it would be a good idea to go along with, so here I am with this
I had the thought "I'm not good at cars, let's train it by doing a racing story"
so I started into it, and I'm not quite as fast as before, but I am putting in the effort I used to before that crash. it's the first time I don't feel like I wanna drop it cuz it isn't good enough for me
maybe not this itself, but it could be a stepping stone to get me back to making stuff I would happily try to get published
