I would say to practice basic shapes in different lighting setups (back lit, above, below, head on, ect) then apply that to bodies since they're made up of mostly circles and cylinders
also think about what areas will catch more light. edges and anything that raised or protruding will catch more light. do the opposite for shadows

In yr drawing the lighting on the breasts doesn't fit with the rest of the drawing. They look like they're being lit from the top rather than the side

You know. I wanted to try something like that. Add more depths to shading like I used to do before my rock bottoms. The other is that I...don't have steady hands.
Still, I will see what I can do with my shading method. I use brightness and contrast while the overlay blankets over the shading layers.
On another note, the shading you done...I am saving that as a reference since I am gonna use the file as a test file.

A quick goblin sketch I did in 5 minutes. The goblin doesn't matter, I just don't like posting something without posting work along with it.

I have been reading Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy. I think it's pretty interesting but I would like to know what other's think about his books and if I should bother reading his other books like "drawing dynamic hands" or "dynamic wrinkles and drapery."

I have also recently heard about gesture drawing but with plants. Is this an actual thing or am I being rused? I know about gesture drawing with humans and animals but I couldn't find much about with plants.

Sounds like an idea. I mean Monet has some good quality paint. Studying them would mean to broaden and simplify them. But its a start. Surely better than winging it.

Also, I decided to make this the final draft for the com.

Oh shoot. I misunderstood.

The idea is the character is dressed as a sword dancer. Simple posing for the audience. But its more of an experimental piece I wanted to try alongside the com. The other is that I wanted to make it special for the commissioner, who is a friend and a really talented artist.

All and all, I feel that I should have add a bit more thought to the context instead of just thinking about a pose and a theme involving contrasting light and dark with Egyptian themes.

I still appreciate the visual feedbacks. I will still try and paint like you have just shown. Its going to take a lot of trial and error. But I still appreciate it.

Hogarth is a good artist, and sometimes his figures are fun to look at. If you like the aesthetics of his art, then feel free to study it.

I personally like Bridgman a lot more though. I recommend going through the David Finch roadmap, exactly as written. Get all the way through the "Copy Bridgman Twice" thing, including the memory drawings, and you'll come out a dramatically better artist. You can also study Hogarth in this way.

Observe the proportions, angles, and positions of things properly. How big is A compared to B? What angle is that from vertical? What shape do those parts make? Does C overlap D? These are the sort of questions you should be asking yourself when you're copying. Make sure the sketch is correct before proceeding. and if it's wrong, redo it, otherwise you won't learn.

here's what I learned

try redrawing it 1-3 times, try taking notes on what you did wrong, try applying shapes to your drawing

I prefer contour desu since I'm doing KTD, but honestly I don't mind. This is kinda my first time doing Construction and I think it went okay. I can draw anime heads easily, since I used to copy manga xd.

But overall I'm glad it went okay better than yesterday

These 3d shapes don't quite make sense. You really need to be able to draw basic shapes in perspective or else you will absolutely struggle with drawing more complex shapes.

pirate a course and take it slow. Something observation heavy like Eviston's course will do you some good. do the course you've chosen with somebody who can check if your doing the exercises properly. Also be sure to take your time when drawing, slowing down is the easiest way to make better looking work. learn to make proportional observations. While doing the course, apply what you learn to artist's you're studying and into your own work.

accumulate skills starting from accurate observation as your foundation. I recommend sticking to a video course since you can then see how the exercises are performed.

You remind yourself that every good artist went through that phase and didn’t give up, so it’s necessary to power through it. Think of bad art as an opportunity to improve because just by looking at it and identifying the aspects that suck you have a list of what the most important things you need to practice are. And list out the good parts too to encourage yourself + continue including those in later pieces. Don’t be someone who studies forever and never does original work.

Rewatching Bocchi so decided to draw it even though I don't particularly like the style.
Trying to be accurate and fast, I'm making improvements but I'm still no where near where I need to be :/
Tried not to erase. I struggle with intuitive perspective especially with the body (a high or low angle shot where the pelvis and rib cage overlap each other for example).
I think I will just draw more.

I am not trying to crab pawell. I would never crab anyone. I'm trying to prevent him from spinning his wheels for years like I did. Gesture is not a basic skill. It's very subtle and relies on a solid foundation of observational skills and, to a lesser extent, anatomical knowledge. Beginners should dip their toes in, but not focus on it completely.
>>7104676
>post like these is why i am doing multiple different books on same topic: not just for practice and mileage, but also to check multiple resources to really know whats up. and frankly gesture is one of the topics where is zero overlap: some books say its the most important shit ever, some pretend it doesnt exist at all. I will simply have to keep trying until my figures are no longer so BEG

Gesture is extremely important. I'm guessing that the reason some books don't mention it is because the authors understand that it isn't something you should throw at someone just starting out. You yourself say that training observation is the most important thing for beginners, and you're right. You should slow down and focus on accuracy for a while, rather than grinding quick gestures. If you don't make sure that what you're putting down looks right, then, well, it's not going to look right. No matter how many times you do it. You're just building bad habits, like I did.

For me personally, I've decided to break down my studies for the next few weeks into focusing on specific parts of the body. The first week is feet, then I'll move up to legs, and so on. Zooming in like this, rather than trying to get every part of the body right at once, helps make things less overwhelming, and I feel like I'm actually getting more information per session.

The ground will be pushing up against her shoulders in this position. Also use that white space you have to make her come out of frame to reinforce the idea of her leaning forward.

you're jumping the gun into texture prematurely when it's a direct product of light and shadow. You haven't developed the lighting in this image to really establish that. What artist are you trying to study?

pic related with no opacity, and size change. Just get a rectangle and make it respond somewhat like ink would. Get aquainted with the brush customization so you don't have to ask anymore.

Literally how iliya mirochnik does it. His course is in the torrent. There's a lot of overlap between concepts. For instance, a lot of people seem to be under the impression that gesture/rhythm is a uniquely linear construct when that's thinking about the concept too small. It's too big to be confined to just line. It affects color and value as well as shapes. How these interconnect is what makes an image feel nice to look at.

Take this Leyendecker for example. The colored line that I made could be referred to as the rhythm of color in this piece, although this is a grossly oversimplified idea of it. It's more apparent with color zones of the face. The proportion of the colors have this timing to them similar to playing music. So there's the proportional rhythm of the colors and then there's also where they fit between each other through the shapes. Marco Bucci makes a good comparison to music here as well as to how color moves:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFoKmX0LfCs&ab_channel=MarcoBucci
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LhcNbFMkTw&t=380s&ab_channel=MarcoBucci

I highly recommend reading Harold Speed's The Science and Practice of Drawing. It won't teach you how to draw, it's more so conveying important concepts about drawing.

My thoughts are a bit all over the place with this spiel. Rhythm is such a massive concept that's it's difficult for me to type about. The more you can compare picture making to not just music, but sports as well the more you might get of my schizo ramble.

tl/dr

Observation/3d construction and everything else will complement each other as you improve and understand drawing/painting more.

I'm planning how I'm going to apply my studies with these writings I made, absorbing content from other artists who passed on the same information, I wanted to know if there's something wrong with it or if it's suitable

1. Do not divert focus from what you are studying
2. Avoid having an overload of information so that in the end you don’t know where to apply
TIP: focus on studying until you have an understanding of what you are studying
3. Avoid getting stuck just copying. Apply what you understand to a reference figure (look for photos of artists you like, and try to translate and deconstruct them to understand the production process.
4. Avoid practicing all the time (always drawing until exhaustion will not benefit you and will only waste time, even when you do not apply the fundamentals studied ``you are not studying for a test´´). Avoid spending long hours until exhaustion
5. What do you want your figure to convey? (know how to use everything you studied and apply it)
6. not be restricted to the method and execution of a single artist or the method of one artist. This will hinder your progress and you will miss out on essential things that you still have to learn.
7. broaden your view of the world
this over time and practice and study as an artist, will develop over time
8. exercise your motor and muscle memory

They are two sides of the same coin. One is thinking in 2D and one is thinking in 3D. You need to be able to think in 3D to draw from imagination and to think in 2D to translate that into appealing shapes on your canvas. All fundies are connected and build off of each other.

I learned this very late, im on day 38 of drawing and I realized that to gain a new skill is just trial and error there is not perfect path, pick up a book even if its shit you'll still learn something.

I recently watched a video about coding on how people just don't do it you know what I mean? People get trapped in this mindset where "OKAY I HAVE TO DRAW LIKE THIS GO TO DRAWABOX, AND CRIPPLE MY PASSION, THIS WILL MAKE ME BE LIKE THE NEXT KIM JUNG GI" you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, start small, and it'll lead to big results.

you learn than practice not learn than more learn. You learn by losing, it isn't technically losing since you gain something.

This was my first attempt at digital painting. Kept a lot of things simple: flat colors, no folds on fabric, painted figures over reference image to keep proportions accurate, and color picked from the reference. I also made the brush simple: anti-aliasing and opacity fading around the cursor, and solid color with a circle shape with no texture. I want to modify the brush later so the strokes are visible in the painting.

Another study, I struggled to get her left breast just right. Am however getting the hang of drawing the front facing angle breast better compared to before.

Feels like I am gradually getting more accurate but it's still awkward. My line work still looks bad...maybe I need a better brush.
