I want to learn how to draw, but I am a raging retard and I cannot manage to work on anything without excessive handholding. If I just try to sit down and draw something with no direction, I get overwhelmed and demotivated. I just don’t know where to begin.

I need a guide that will tell me exactly what to draw and when, so that I can improve my drawing skills to the point that I can figure out what I need to do on my own. What are the best guides for this purpose?

>Drawing comics the marvel way
Perhaps the biggest /beg/ trap out there, the only worse suggestion would be one of those shitty "how to draw manga" books. Just get Keys to Drawing or The Art and Science of Drawing, hell even Fun With a Pencil, maybe even Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain if you skip like half of the pseudoscientific drivel in it.

David Finch recommends it, I'd trust him over an Anon who likely won't post his work(unless?)

I just don't understand why you would want to draw if you don't actively enjoy doing it?
Drawing for me is the same as playing video games or playing sports
It's a hobby I can get better at

I guarantee you're probably putting hours into some random rpg or online shooter game but other than beating the enemy there isn't really any goal - why would you need a goal other than enjoying yourself?

Start by trying to draw straight, horizontal lines freehand. First, make the lines short (about an inch). Connect several of these short lines to make a long line. Draw rows of them and try to have them be parallel to one another, and evenly spaced.

If you are right-handed, draw these lines from left to right, and keep the paper before you somewhat to the right of center so your elbow can move freely without bumping into your ribs. Hold the pencil comfortably, not in a death grip. The movement should come from your shoulder.

Complete this exercise carefully. Check your lines and spacing with a ruler or straight edge. Repeat.

This should not be "grinded," in the sense that it's the only thing you do for 8 hours straight. Fifteen minutes, once or twice a day, will make a difference if you are consistent. Other exercises should follow when you have mastered this one.

>>7096442
And yes, this is probably the most elemental drawing exercise, and that's precisely why a struggling beginner should do it.

What is a square? It is two sets of parallel lines, of equal length, that are perpendicular to one another. If you can't draw a straight line, and judge its length and angle relative to another straight line, you can't draw a square. And the square is really a building block for so much of drawing even when it only serves as a frame of reference.

Continue with these exercises. Slow down and try not to have the ends of the lines curl. I advised to make the lines short because it is difficult at first to make a long line and keep it straight. Begin each short line right where the previous one ends, and try to have it appear as one continuous line with no gaps between the segments.

When you become proficient with this, you should try doing something similar with vertical lines. Vertical lines are more difficult than horizontal. I suggested to move the paper somewhat right of center (assuming you are right-handed) for horizontals. For verticals, it is better to have the paper a bit left of center, positioning your elbow out before you, and (again, using your shoulder for the motion) make the lines going from top to bottom in short segments.

"How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" is good. It is recommended by professionals like David Finch and Frank Cho because they both learned a lot from it. It is not going to give you these kinds of really fundamental exercises but it is still beginner-oriented and has a lot of useful information.
