What if we're all in an anime? The story goes like: artist with big dreams tries to succeed with his creative aspirations, but the road takes him to unexpected challenges. for Loomis, as I remember, the division between the front plane and side plane of the face is made at the outer edges of the brow ridge. also pay attention to the relative, two-dimensional relationships between different landmarks of the face: the bottom of the ear with the bottom of the nose, say; or the top of the ear and the top of the nose; or the top of the nose and the bottom of the left eye, etc. these relative differences are important in properly placing the features. once I set up the outline proportions of the face, I start with the nose. then I look at its vertical relation with the brow ridge and the nose, then work my way from there. whatever you start with doesn't necessarily matter - figure out what works for you - but you want to always be conscious of the two-dimensional relationship between different features.

Things that stick out of the form like the cheek are important for the viewer to make sense of the form
The eyes wides point will usally be at the pupil
It's a difficult angle, not only from bellow but she's tilted aswell.
The browridge is rounded but not a round, it's almost squarish so sometimes it's easier to round off a square form but with females you need to be carefull with that because they have more rounded than males browridges.

The angles are wrong. Especially the ear and the eyes. The right cheekbone in your rendition somehow connects straight to her eye which is also wrong.

If you want to draw in a semi realistic style then you need to learn to planes of the face and actually apply them to your features, you can't draw outlines for the eyes, mouth and nostrils and call it a day.
Here's someone drawing the head using the loomis technique and the asaro head planes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl5EoXnMr1k
And here's the asaro 3d model which you can use as reference.

Also I don't know how much time you've spent on that study but if it's a study try to spend a couple of hours on it, especially as a beginner. You don't have to finish a drawing in one sitting, try working on it over a couple of days if you don't have a lot of time to draw.

I gave it a try from what I have learned from Steve Huston and Sargent because I don't like Loomis construction. This is more to point out the main points and ideas rather than to show my poor skills.

Houston: He usually starts with a sailboat shape, which basically is a gesture of the front and top of the face, he also adds the gesture of the neck (following the digastric and esternomastoid muscles). And as he says, the key is to keep the proportions (halves and thirds) parallel to each other (fuchsia lines).

Sargent: he focuses on shapes (light vs. shadow) that are later polished into value patches. to keep the likeness and find beautiful shapes, he relies on height vs. width and the shape of the skull (for example, instead of focusing on the eye, he focuses on the shape of the eye socket first and then if that is correct, he places the eye). Basically he blocks everything, uses straight lines and then retouches everything to give the likeness.

2 weeks since I've started drawing again. Had some week long stints over the years where I started draw a box or just did my own thing. I'm determined to stick with it this time.

I'm at the point where I can spot a lot of mistakes, but I lack either the skill or knowledge(probably both) to do it correctly. Kind of frustrating, but I'll push onwards.

Question to intermediates and high begs: How much do you actually draw from your shoulder and elbow? I try to as much as possible, but especially when I'm just sketching away, I tend to just default to drawing from my wrist.

not them, but the angle of the front plane in your rendition isn't steep enough; also, the lowest point of the nose has just about the same vertical value as the lowest point for the right eye (our perspective); and the far outside of the mouth aligns about center vertically with the bottom of the nose.

I have some cool ideas in my head that i'd like to get out there. I also think if i spend a lot of time improving i'll start getting even better ideasm
It's a pretty weak and vague goal though.

The ideas are nice but are they nice enough to warrant thousands of hours of practice? On the other hand, i do literally nothing with my time so any increase in drawing would be s net positive. If i don't draw for an hour then i'll spend that hour gooning with factorio on the second monitor. It seems to be the case that there's no point in not drawing given the alternative uses of my time

When it comes to shading something that can be helpful is to close one eye and squint down with the other when you look at your reference you’ll see two areas a shadow area underneath the chin and light area other side of the head it’s this relationship that we want to put in our drawing. The other issue is you’ve made your shadows on the underside of the neck way too light I know why though your trying to get the reflected light. Making it too bright is a very common problem, it’s problem number 3 on the page I’ll link. https://www.dorian-iten.com/shading-mistakes/

The best way to solve this is to think of the shadow areas and light areas as separate countries your shadow values always want to be darker than your dark values in light areas.

focus on b&w painting for now

Learn to separate light and shadow. Learn to spot core shadow, reflected lights, and halftones, and the ability to group them.

And most of all, learn to draw better. You're not nearly able to observe a reference well enough, nor put down shapes in the right spots, nor understand the anatomy of the face. All of that is a pre-requisite to rendering.

tl;dr you need more Loomis

Looks good. I think you could improve it by adding more hard edges, particularly around the bony parts of the face like the cheeks and softening other areas (like the contour of the lips). You could also vary the hues a bit more by going warmer and more saturated in the shadows. And, you could push the values a bit more, darker shadows and brighter highlights. Here is a quick paintover.

It's Neon Genesis Evangelion. I have a mech figure which i did a study of in the top right. The Asuka is all study too, except the bottom left, which is from imaginoo.
I would like to draw other characters and mech from the series. I spent my teen years obsessed with it. There's an event in Tower of Fantasy that is a collab with NGE going on right now, which reminded me of it

>>7099946
yeah I knew NGE but wondered if you had done a series of drawings in that style. It's great seeing notations like
>Asuka is a skinny girl
although I read it as autobio:
>Asuka is a skiing girl
The partial assembly of her uniform next to a fully realised sketch, various stances and head poses are all nice to see as well. Have you drawn a silhouette of the mechs before? It might complement your style. Are you using different grades of lead here or just using varying amounts of pressure?

I was in a similar boat to you. I initially felt inspired to get into art around 2016, but because I was in college, had other hobbies I had already put more time into, didn't have much direction in art and had a very strong perfectionist mindset I would only draw for a few days in a row and then get pissed off and quit - only to come back a month or so later and repeat the cycle. I ended up drawing maybe 60 full days total before I quit for about four years. then in 2020, after working on myself and realizing that I want to live with as few regrets as possible, I made the resolution to get back into art and be consistent. there have still been some bumps along the way, but I have been on the whole consistent since then and since November I've been drawing every day. I was very pessimistic like you about my prospects, and while I don't know you personally, I would not be so quick to make the judgement that you are hopeless - even if most of your experience tilts you quite a ways in that direction.

So while I was starting to do some practice, I decided to redo a face head study while also practicing the Asaro method (hence why the nose for the newer one is blocked out rather than a nose)...I tried my best to make sure the lips were not a symbol, but it was just so difficult. I looked at the shape of the lip and angle, and tried my best but I just couldn't make them look 3D.

some nieche artists are just extremely hard to find. the first thing you are missing out on is using different search engines. try ecosia, qwant, metager, searx and others. Make sure to write his name in quotation marks. e.g. [ "Edgar Ende" artist ]
since he's German, also try [ "Edgar Ende" Künstler ].
second, if you are really into it, try contacting the websites where you acually do find pics of his works.
finally, art books and catalogues are maybe hard to find, but give it a shot. try whatever second-hand resale website is popular in your area.

Pawell, I have a question to you. So, you rigoriously stick to these books and post everyday as possible, all to the enjoyment of public.

But do you not feel this holds you back? Do you not often feel like you would take a day off, or get the idea of some amazing project in your head, or the desire to just experiment with random stuff? Obviosuly this is the opposite of you but yeah.

Guys, please. I made this on my day 4 as a total beginner, but I have zero fundamentals, I literally just made cylinders and tried to make it look like "sexy woman shape" and refined it about 600 times until it looked good. I tried to do the same thing with other poses and body types etc but they all look bad because I have no fundamentals. I just learned you can rotate move and resize individual body parts in photoshop and I started playing with it trying to get other parts of anatomy right, but I can't do anything with legs. How do people get started with the understanding human anatomy? I just found out there's a website where you can pose 3d models and I'm going to practice with it tomorrow.

Proko yt anatomy course too. It's very easy to digest a video a day. He may do a shit job at explaining but it does teach anatomy. But only after you learn the simplified body. I don't agree with gesture in the very beginning you should be fully focused on shapes volume and proportions. My reasoning is gesture requires you know the body simplified or it isn't doing much. But who am I all the art teaches bang on gesture and I'm just some random beg.
