I've been symbol drawing and doodling since I was a toddler. I'm now two years past the legal adult age and have realized that I should learn to draw properly, especially since I'm a huge storyteller/writer and don't want to go broke paying people to draw my comic ideas for me. Primarily, I want to create simple offbeat cartoons, but obviously, I need to learn the fundamentals so I'm not terrible at it.

Since I've been drawing basic circles and squares my entire life, should I just move onto the studies portion of the hackmd sticky?

I posted this the other thread and got recc'd davidfinchart so maybe I'll start there once I get home.

My first attempt at digital art. I have yet to start getting into painting and studying values so I tried to go for flat coloring. Lineart was also far more difficult compared to doing it on paper.

"Drawing basic circles and squares" only gives you the basic hand-eye coordination, you still need to learn how to draw what you see (copy) accurately, then move on to construction and then specific studies.
Take it with a pound of salt since I'm still only training my own hand-eye coordination now, but that's what my general plan looks like.

I don't see it talked about all that often, probably because it's a non-issue for normal people, but what about physical fatigue from drawing, what to do with that? I get it a lot more often now that I try to draw from the shoulder most of the time. Are there some warm-ups to help with that, or maybe exercises to strengthen those muscles in particular?

Welp, now you look at it as usual.

>made my chin stronger than it actually is.

>Seeing them side by side it seems my eyes are closer than they should be compared to the original.
>still feels like I couldn't express the depth/length of face I wanted.

You have terminal case of unrealistic goals. You said you want to be able to draw figures without need for a reference aka from imagination. However, even pro mangakas and comic artists with decades of experience and tens of thousands of figures drawn still have to use references from time to time. All pro artists use photo references, 3d models, some even just photograph themselves as a reference. You are going to spend years grinding your ungodly ugly figures and still won't achieve your goal. You already studied like 20 art books, just move on to drawing finished work you actually want to draw.
I know you won't, btw. The only reason I am writing this is to maybe save someone else reading this from falling down your path. You will keep drawing your surreal deformed humans and won't get closer to your unachievable goal. I just hope someone else will learn from your mistake.

After that, we will learn to draw different parts of the body, muscle groups, and finally finish the course with head drawing.
I am learing the drawing forms part. I dare say that I can now feel the flow of the body, and forms better.
He also has different smaller drawing courses.
>no animation course
Is this your gotcha comment? He taught animators to draw. The animators learn to animate from different teachers? Do you really think that the money hungry capitalists at Disney, WBros, etc would pay him just to sit there and do nothing?

it is factually not true. You need to define what this ability to draw you talking about supposed to looks like because everyone have different idea how this imaginary work supposed to looks like, but if you not drawing for money nothing unrealistic about making satisficing images on a blank canvas. independent of what some one using somewhere. commercial work have different priorities.

Looking real good to me btw
Just remember it's very hard to get a close likeness in pure line work, since the brain reads faces as basically masses of lights and darks and recognizes them according to that, you really need to add values to get true likeness, see: Sargent and how he got flawless likenesses despite only basically smearing some paint on the page in precisely the right shape

If your unrealistic goal is to become the biggest real estate magnate in your country and by the end of year 5 of trying that you have two businesses that are doing good and are planning to open a restaurant as part of your grand scheme to generate enough money to get into real estate, you're doing pretty good and your unrealistic goals are serving you well
If your unrealistic goal is to become an Olympic athlete well outside the age window that is usual for your chosen discipline and as a result of that you train like a superbeast and become one of the 0.1% most athletic people on the planet, your unrealistic goals are serving you well
I see this is the famous Pawell people scoff about in other threads. Hi Pawell >>7094613 if you keep drawing figures like picrel of your post you will eventually just start to have little eureka moments, which will snowball into you becoming excellent enough to do what you say you want as you build up your internal visual library

I used to have a huge problem with drawing tiny heads too
Eventually you just get an eye for it and it never happens again. There's always a small degree of tolerance in the size of a figure's head because of natural variance (people's heads vary in size slightly IRL) plus the latitude granted by distortion (the viewer will often assume the head just looks small from their viewing angle and their brain will read it as correct because of that) so once you figure out how to eye it you're just good to go forever pretty much
Consider Michelangelo's David, the head is actually overlarge out of proportion in order to account for the distance from the eye of the beholder to the head; so are the hands. It still looks proportionally correct, even in some cases if you happen to get an angle on it from above

Honestly I just wish I could be more accepting of drawings that "look bad" or that are "cringe" as the kids say. Way too high standards and as a result extremely unrealistic expectations are the brightest hurdles for me as a prebeg right now. When I was way younger it was really fun to just doodle and draw random shitty anime-style drawings without caring much about perspective or construction or any fundamentals except some basic proportions really, but now I've become so critical and jaded, and all the fun has been sucked out. Is it something that can be reversed, or am I doomed to never enjoy drawing again?

I've been doing that exercise from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain for a few days, the one where you freehand trace an image that's held upside down. I shouldn't expect much improvement from so little practice but the one to the left in pic related was done before the one to the right and is still better. Is this really helping?
Also, the entire purpose of this exercise is to train away symbol thinking, but even when stuff is upside down I easily recognize what it's supposed to be and I keep thinking about the parts I'm drawing.

The "good unrealistic" goals for artist would be
>to draw a masterpiece you will be proud of for years
>to get your work presented in a major gallery
>to publish your own comic book/manga and get recognition
>to become twitter famous and get rich from commissions
Basically whatever floats your boat and puts you on top from your perspective.
His goal is to acquire a singular very specific technical skill, which makes up only small portion of artist's skill set and not even top artists bother to fully master it. It's autism, plain and simple. Pawell just wants to do studies and he has no idea what he wants to draw. I don't care, what he does next. But other begs should be warned to not end up like him. Direct your time and effort into actually making art you dreamt of drawing. Use references if you can't draw purely from imagination. Do not get trapped in eternal student mind set. Do not wait for when you are "allowed" to draw. Simple as.

Getting used to a drawing tablet takes a bit of time. You don't have the eye-hand coordination yet. I'd recommend unplugging your mouse and using it as the mouse just to get more accustomed

And try to have fun. Don't be sad if your drawings come out bad at first. Everyone starts bad. Try to find something that you want to draw even if the quality is low

You don't have to do that part, just trace the outline if drawing circles and ovals over the image is too hard. Now are you going to do it? A lot of what you don't know how to do will become obvious once you put your pencil down and start doing lines(not cocaine, that's illegal)

One object is fine, a cup or something is good, but multiple helps your sense of depth more. The more challenge, the more you learn. But don't overwhelm yourself. First draw objects that cover the basic forms, a ball, a cylinder(toilet roll), a box, a cone(icecream cone) etc. then get objects that are comprised of multiple basic forms, say a camera(cylinder and box).

I was on a 2 week break from drawing, and this was my first anatomy study since resuming...

It's pretty bad. I was drawing it on a stream and I kinda rushed it :/ Some of it was being rusty and forgetting how to construct her in a more fluid and less awkward way, but yeah my lines look awful (the reason they look like that is due to trying hard to get the shape of her legs down, though I was starting to learn before my break that I should do the basic shape first and then the exact shape of the leg.

I did some Loomis heads also just to practice those again. I am hoping within a month I can finally get used to drawing people so I don't feel so unconfident.

Regardless, critique away, and please try to do more than "Muh symbol" using the loose definition of it (it looking off doesn't equal symbol) while critiquing. I just need to figure out how to construct limbs better.

And I suck at drawing breasts still, it's a crapshoot if I'll draw them well or not.

If you are all wondering I spent about maybe 10-20 minutes on her before I had to move on.

Trace a picture, simple is best。
Now move the picture from under the paper to the side of the paper
Act out the tracing again, following the same path your pen took before, but without the picture under as a guide, the picture is now to the side for you to copy. If you get stuck, What part are you stuck on? Be specific as possible, and don't wait for an answer from me, think about what that answer might be yourself.

how should i be approaching something like this
i tried to draw the forms as i saw them
people say to just use the method that works best for you, but i just can't shake the feeling that i'm doing it the wrong way
or shooting myself in the foot somehow
like do i just start with boxes and go from there?
are organic forms an okay starting point?
like the rounded beanbag thing, i mean
or should i try to draw the bony landmarks and do that robo bean thing
idk i feel like ishould have some sort of workflow figured out by now, especially for basic stuff like this, but i'm still floating around aimlessly

I'm trying to teach myself how to do lineart and while I've watched a shitload of tutorials I'm still finding that I don't really know what I'm doing lol
Something just gets lost in translation from sketch to lines and I can't tell what it is or how to fix it

>> No.7096132

>>7096113
I have the same issue It's due to not finishing the sketch. The sketch should be brought to final there should be no guessing in the line work. Shapes and forms need to be fully identified. I would suggest watching Christophe Young and stuff like eo58 and their workflow. They use the sketch all the way into linework so there is never a loss of information at any point.

>> No.7096135

>>7096132
Interesting, I thought the sketch had all the info I needed but I can see how a more refined sketch could make it look better
I was moreso focusing on something I picked up from an art youtuber where she says to "draw with intent" or to convey the most information with the least amount of lines. But clearly I have more to learn before trying something like that I guess lol

>> No.7096136

>>7096135
For stylized stuff its ok. It makes sense the intent part is reduce throwing lines which makes a mess and fucks up the linework. Another really great thing to study is Bargue and cast drawings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk8qt7b2vEE

Thanks for the tips, I'll watch the vid you linked

Ah you're right, I got tunnel vision and didn't add any line weight at all
As for those little hatching lines you added how would I learn where to place those, is it just to indicate minor shadows to add depth like you said?

>> No.7096168

>>7096156
I've added them to show plane changes, notice for example how you didn't indicate at all that he has a chin in your lineart, or that his nose scrunches up a bit. I also used them to taper your long cheek line a bit since it ended abruptly and to add some shadows under his eyebrow. It's mostly a stylization thing the way you add the small details to show plane changes. You could have gone with no detail marks and done it in color for all i know.

Pay attention to the specific proportions they use, and how they approach construction and simplifying forms (you have to actually learn some construction and anatomy for this, but later). Also draw from life more, literally just draw some random stuff around the house, to train your observation.
