The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/))
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Is formatting the manga as right to left a hard rule for it to be manga and thus be permissible in this general?

I feel like it's just an arbitrary tradition because Japanese books are right to left.
Just the same it would be bizarre to write english letters top to bottom like Japanese ones, I feel it makes no sense as an westerner to copy the right to left format.

The essence of what makes something manga should be in the art style right?

Most anons here are not going to care, no. The only one who does it habitually is porn/cowboy anon, and that's only because he literally has a job with a Japanese publisher, so obviously that's going to be a requirement. Outside of that, he's done the usual left to right reading style like all of us.

Do whatever makes it possible to actually make the comic. This can either mean you draw in a more simple manner or you do your best at emulating your dream style (which might force you to learn the required skills along the way).
Either way, don‘t get too obsessed with skill-level stuff. Making manga or comics is a crazy commitment of time and effort. You have to have a passion for telling a story through this medium, otherwise you will never want to put the hours in.
In short: people obsess too much over style instead of just drawing the project.

The new 3.0 CSP update seems like it makes it even easier to convert photos into BW images, along with giving them a sketchy feel with the 'Pencil' filter. Seems like it could be useful for making backgrounds while being less obvious or jarring. I'll admit it's somewhat tempting for me, but then, I feel like I should at least 'try' to learn backgrounds.

>> No.7096318

>>7096307
You really should try to learn how to draw a background. Everyone should. There will come a time one day where a scene is going to need a background that is custom and no photo is gonna be able to deliver.

>> No.7096321

>>7096318
Oh I definitely agree that it's always best to learn. Like, the thing I'm drawing now could benefit from the new thing, but if I were trying to do anything particularly stylized, it wouldn't help at all. Like that one guy's art from last thread, filters won't be able to imitate that

Setting and locations are just as important as characters. Just look at dragon ball, everyone remembers the martial arts tournament arena, Roshi's island, Korin's tower etc. It's part of what brings a story together. If you're going to use stock backgrounds then you need to do something to make them stand out.

>> No.7096333

>>7096324
Not him but he's probably talking about Rococo. >>7094884
But the same applies to most people's work in these threads. Few if any are trying to depict a "real life"-like environment, they're usually putting their own spin/personality to it, even with the varying levels of skill in the execution.
Even my own stuff (I'm >>7096044), which in this case IS going for a "real-life"-like environment, probably would not benefit from incorporating photos as anything more than reference, because it's unavoidable that I'll need to draw these environments without photos anyway unless I was to fly to japan and decorate a cramped apartment and then take a ton of photos with various lenses. So there's going to be an obvious inconsistency if some backgrounds are edited photos and some are drawn from scratch, right? It only makes sense when the work is set up to make it practical, otherwise it stands out in a bad way.

>>7096329
Using photo backgrounds doesn't mean using stock photos, and nor does it mean you need to neglect creating memorable backgrounds. That junkyard shack in the woods toward the end of Punpun was memorable, for example.
I say this as somebody who draws all backgrounds by hand and always will.

I really should have excluded "chapter 1" from publishing, because it is not useful narrative speaking. Its mostly a lot of left over ideas from the previous 3 reboots of the comic. Because the world building has been going for a long time at that point it made sense in my head but nobody else.

I can technically provide a explanation for everything that's happening in that chapter but I was hoping that it would be included as part of the exposition in the later chapters. In general, chapter 1 is a flash forward, and some of the characters had been reintroduced at this point, but they haven't been properly explained.

>Toriyama didn't watch anime or read manga and was instead influenced by Chinese folklore and Hong Kong cinema for Dragon Ball
>Araki was influenced by victorian literature and gothic horror for JJBA, Dracula and Sherlock Holmes served as a major inspiration for Phantom Blood. European renaissance sculptors like Michelangelo and post-impressionist artists such as Paul Gauguin also influenced him
>Kurumada suffered through depression, so he made a travel to Greece and it was a transformative experience for him, serving as a major inspiration for Saint Seiya
>Kubo was influenced by music, foreign languages and architecture for Bleach, the Espada are all named after famous architects
>Oda was influenced by 1930s cartoons, citing Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry as a major inspiration for One Piece. His art style is based on rubber hose animation where characters limbs and body can stretch and bounce as if made from rubber.

Why do most modern mangakas only take inspiration from other anime, manga and LNs? Older manga and anime took inspiration from all kinds of classical art, literature and cinema. Shouldn't they be better than their predecessors? And why are they almost all set in Tokyo/Urban Japan in comparison to fictional worlds, smaller cities or more interesting setting like pre-2010 anime? Where's the creativity, man?

Is this why modern shounen like Kimetsu no Yaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen feels so soulless and boring?

Terminally-online people on Twitter and Tumblr and the like aside, I don't think a little bit of fan-service (either towards a male or female readership) ever hurt anyone, but it does depend on 1) to what extent, 2) what style of manga are you making and 3) does it make sense for that specific character that is getting a sexy design to have that kind of sex appeal.

Like if it's a hentai or something like Jojo where everyone is dressed in that kind of stuff, then whatever. But if it's a more grounded manga and then somebody is shown with titillating clothes or proportions when nothing about the manga or the character themselves would warrant it, then it won't be the best fit.

Taking the hook, what are your inspirations?
About manga/comics I would say...
Asia: Miura, Toriyama, Togashi, Araki, oh great...

From West: Aurelio Galleppini, Todd McFarlane, Romano Scarpa and some guy from old batman comics that I forgot his name

But I think the biggest inspiration in my life is Tim Burton(corpse bride scared the shit out of me as a kid, and I used to watch gory movies kek)

My other inspirations comes from gothic art, sacred art( mainly from orthodox) and the old portuguese/Brazilian small villages where I grew up(at night is totally phantasmagorical) no wonder coffin joe is legendary.

My second big inspiration are those guys here(mainly for blue parrot)

Asian inspirations: Kaoru Mori (Otoyomegatari), Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon), Kentaro Miura (Berserk), and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell).

Western Inspirations: Luis Royo (various works, was a huge influence on my original decision to make Itzel), Frank Frazetta (various works), Bruce Timm (Batman Animated Series, funnily enough).

Game influences: Diablo 1, Thief the Dark Project, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Chrono Trigger.

Hey /mmg/ it's been a minute. last time I posted my comic here (https://tapas.io/series/Apocalypse-Knight/info)) you guys had some constructive feedback about our font, contrast, and some story structure things and we do appreciate that. production on the second issue has now started and we wanted to post the first page here to get some feedback on if this is the type of thing you were talking about last time. the artist really said he wanted to go for more of a manga style look. So let me know how we're doing!

inspiration is always a weird thing for me to think of
I usually like to look at older manga for stuff
I like the work of Tagami Yoshihisa(Grey and Karuizawa Syndrome) to the point i studied him almost exclusively for 4 years, and Ikeda Riyoko(Rose of Versailles and Claudine)
I used to look at Araki's old work, like BT too
in newer stuff, Souboutei Must Be Destroyed from Fujita Kazuhiro had an interesting feel for me

I'm admittedly very weebish, I don't look a whole lot at western stuff, let alone comics
Goya and Beksinski I loved when I saw their work
I found Leone Frollo a while back, he's fun to look at

so after manga, 80s and 90s movies and anime films are prolly where I'd pull inspiration from next.

lately for the sake of this work especially, I've bene looking at Kusunoki Michiharu's Wangan Midnight

but I guess let that show how even that didn't outweigh my acknowledgement of how sorta, isolated(?), my media consumption is
manga and anime just sorta always consumed my interest, while western stuff never really did
and not like, middle school weeb "the glorious nippon" type of interest
my dad and his brother were into anime as teens, so stuff like Dragon Ball was always around me
so outside of whatever movies, shows, or books my dad would have me look at, usually I was just off with whatever anime was on toonami, whatever series me and dad or uncle would watch together, or the shonen jump manga usually I'd be reading

Is starting an online published manga that will probably take 15/20 years to finish in current year worth it as a barely above /beg/ tier artist that wants to make a long story focused on characterization and world building?
Also is an art journey comparable to pic related possible in terms of increasing skill and expectations for how high quality I want the art of my comic to be by the time it reaches the ending?

>Also is an art journey comparable to pic related possible
Given you posted an example, obviously yes it's possible. But consider that he had an editor to help guide his hand and provide knowledgeable feedback and could make it his full time job and pour all his time and energy into it. But there probably isn't any better way to reach that goal than to do it full time for 15-20 years, no.

My sincere advice: if you want to aim to make professional-grade comics/manga, then make going pro your goal. Do whatever you can to get to a level of comicmaking where you can apply to publishers, and do that. Apply to publishers, get yourself into a position where you can pour all your time and energy into writing and drawing comics. The hard part is getting to that point, you're going to need to make a lot of comics on your own without guidance and without pay. It takes many years of slowly, slowly improving. Before that 15-20 year long comic is a decade or so of improving, unless you're already close. Maybe you can improve quickly, maybe you can't. It's all up to you. Just focus on making the best stuff you can make for now, and doing even better next time.

go for it right now. doesn't matter how beg you are, or how big the project is
if you have something you want to make, start work on it immediately, don't fill your time with lesser projects that you deem worthy of your skill level, you will improve 10x faster working on something you're passionate about
and by the time improve enough to make the big one, you don't know how you'll feel about it, by working on those other projects you'll learn and grow, and if it takes years or a decade you'll change as a person in life
you may end up with no desire to go back to what you considered your "magnum opus", and instead you'll regret never working on it when you had the passion to

I think it is a lot more of a complex situation than most people make it out to be.

When people say to start out with something smaller, they mean like, 3 or 4 or 5 page one-shot or something. Something that is quick and easy just to get you flowing, and get a few pages in sequence. It shouldn't take you that long to be enough of a distraction that feels like it is drawing you away from your supposed magnum opus. If you can't do a few pages quickly, then you probably have no business making an epic that is going to take you literal decades to complete.

Many people regret doing their big projects, and many more fall into the trap of getting 100 pages in, or a couple years in, and looking back at how bad the old stuff is, and then they want to start going back and redrawing everything, and they often get pulled into a cycle of doing that over and over.

There are a lot of pitfalls of just jumping headlong into a huge project. Even most mangaka start their long-ass series as a short 20-30 page oneshot.

that's the part I disagree with the most, bad mindset, you always have business making what you want to make
the length isn't important, a 5 page one-shot could be the first 5 pages of your 100 chapter epic, it should be about what you want to create
I think cutting down a bigger story to a few pages, or just finding the "starting point" and turning that into a one-shot is a good idea, as long as you're doing something important to you, finding what matters in the bigger story and using that
even if you end up redrawing hundreds of pages, as long as you're enjoying what you create then that's what's important
I'm just speaking from my own personal experience, so maybe it doesn't apply to everyone, it is probably a much more complex situation

Finished this cover today. Is this professional enough to try & publish? Does it look interesting? Is it too autistic? Cringe? Would appreciate some genuine feedback.
My comic is going to be action packed and comedic, maybe a bit like Dragon Ball. The general story outline is centered around two feuding brothers, Dorian and Dennis (top two figures in picrel, ignore the wizards.) Dorian is a successful gym owner and retired pro fighter, while Dennis has committed his entire life to destroying everything his brother has built due to petty squabbles from their childhood & familial life. Dennis opened a gym right across the street from his brother's gym, engaging in increasingly destructive attacks to try and take ownership of Dorian's gym, eventually resulting in organized militia clashes between the two gyms, their members & staff.

Well of course. As a manga/comic creator you need to be a writer first and an artist second. You can have the shittiest art ever but great writing and it could be extremely successful. Example: One Punch Man. Vice versa, having shitty writing but amazing art can never be as successful.

It's bizarre and interesting enough to hook me up. I really like bold ideas. The art is good; it's not professional, but it's fine enough to work. The strong point is how you play with the faces and shapes.
For the rest, I would need to know how you actually draw the comic pages. Camera angles, panning, storytelling, backgrounds, etc.

Just about everything about the design and line work. A style isn't just "oh this obvious thing (like the shape of eyes)", it's everything the author does. Every single thing they draw (or choose not to draw) is a question that they, consciously or not, determine an answer to themselves. "I'm going to ink this arm now. What kind of lines will I use? Will I use one long thing line? Maybe a bunch of thick lines overlapping? Where should the line be thickest and thinnest? Where should the line start and end?" etc. Nobody's consciously thinking these things for every line, but it is all informed by their own style.

For what purpose? If you want "trve manga style" or whatever then it should be completely monochromatic (pure black). There isn't a whole lot of advice TO give just on digital brushes. Women who are trying to be sexy are sexy in non-pornographic settings, and you don't have to be a slut to do it, and you don't have to be a horndog to be attracted to it and render it. Yes, if it's printed then it's monochrome (outside of special releases with color pages intact). That's the whole point of screen tones -- creating mid-tones in monochrome. There exist manga (particularly in digital-only publications or doujinshi) where they do use flat grays instead of screentones, but print manga always use screentones. Even if they're drawn with ink washes or markers or pencils, they'll convert any mid-tone to monochrome and print that.

imo you shouldn't do this.
Manga is traditionally made with a physical dip pen on a physical paper of a specific size.
This means that no matter the manga, assuming their using the same tools, which they probably are, will always have a specific minimum and maximum size to their lines.
If you draw a character up close, the lines of his face should be of a certain thickness.
When you draw that same character but at a distance, should you get a thinner pen and draw the lines even thinner? (or in this case, draw the image large and then shrink it). No, you should use the same pen and just draw it but with less detail

Look at this drawing here.
When he draws the face up close he uses a certain pen. When he draws it further away... he still uses the same pen. When he draws it yet still further away.. same pen.
It's drawn a little more delicately yes, he's not pressing quite so hard on the pen so the lines are thinner, but it's still the same pen and this gives the whole image a more cohesive look.

thanks, but my design process is very inefficient, because a lot of them are more like frankenstine monster cobbled together from various influences. They usually start with fan art of some sort and I kept adding different things I like about whatever was catching my attention at the time, and thinking up story about them. A while back some people were commenting on the mixed iconography that exist on Rococo and this is the reason. Some characters are purpose made but I kept adding world building and plot elements on them so their design become more complex because their importance become more complex. Sometimes I just think I would like this hot dommy mommy with one of her eyes covered in my comic so I made a version of her or modified existing character to look like her. Sometimes I'll purpose design a group of character at once so I can parse out distinguishing characteristic among them. unfortunately I couldn't tell you a very set method, its just that I come up with characters for fun on a regular basis.

>Some characters are purpose made but I kept adding world building and plot elements on them so their design become more complex
This is the method that always made the most sense to me and I wondered if most other creators took a similar approach to coming up with characters. I always figured it would be easier to think of them less as "people" and more as "plot devices" and then base their design on what would best supplement the narrative.

>Sometimes I just think I would like this hot dommy mommy with one of her eyes covered in my comic
Hey, I see nothing wrong with that. Sometimes ideas can just come to you, and at the end of the day, it's your work so you should add whatever YOU want to put into it. Even if that sexy dommy mommy isn't to the taste of some readers, that doesn't make the idea any less valid. I would imagine this is also not far off from what many other creators do. Making a comic takes a long time, so you're gonna be exposed to many different influences over the course of you making it. Sometimes, it's the authors own experiences that influence their work that I find to be the most interesting about it.

Yes, and they died, or had already been dead. Toriyama was one of them, so was Miura. It sucks, but I didn't know them, and I didn't lose anything from their passing, so how is it any different from some random stranger's obituary in the newspaper? Tips or references for hatching? So far it's been a really laboring process, scribing and manually breaking each line with a eraser. Maybe there's a way to set the brush settings so going thin or thicker gets easier? I've seen some mangaka do crosshatching and for them it feels so loose and laid back.
There's tutorials on how to crosshatch actually shaping the form correctly, but what I mean is that there's too much pressure in each line I draw, I don't think it should be like that. For example the hatching on the table of pic related, it shouldn't be too hard I guess, they're close to straight lines, but each line feels like such a hassle to do right

Hey guys I have a question, and just for reference i’m a complete newbie, I want to learn to draw so I can make Mangas. I have the money to buy a decent drawing tablet, and I kind of hate the idea of using real paper and ink, is this OK? Can you become good at drawing just from using a drawing tablet? Or should I start with traditional paper and pencil and then switch to a tablet?

>> No.7101841

>>7101836
I would argue that its good to get your feet wet in traditional drawing and then make the switch to digital (if digital is your end goal here as you say), but the truth of the matter is that there is no real rule about what you "need" to do. There are plenty of digital only artists who have done just fine and vice versa.

>> No.7101865

>>7101444
draw pages and pages of lines of varying pressure (as is shown in this video, for example https://youtu.be/NBE-RTFkXDk?t=118)) and don't stop until you can ink characters more easily, and then you can try practicing hatching.
it also helps to draw pages of circles and then try practicing drawing lines (again, of varying pressure) inside of those circles, like in this video https://youtu.be/bNjkPMsbvTs?t=99

just do that for as long as you feel you need to. it'll seem impossible at first but that's only because it's purely muscle memory, which is why trained professionals can do it so effortlessly.

also for >>7101836 as well, i'd say practice on paper (with a brush pen or fountain pen/brush or pen nib for inking practice) because going digital too soon will make you ctrl+z too often and it's far easier to transfer trad to digital vs the other way around. if you miss layers then get a lightbox and another piece of paper.

NTA but I think you need to work on construction first. The ultimate goal of shading is to add form and depth and to do that you need to have planned out the planes of the drawing. Once you've mastered that you can worry about things like negative space and aesthetics.

MHA is sketched & inked analog, and colored digitally.

ctrl-z is a very useful tool that can become a crutch if you're not careful. You can use it, just don't over-rely on it. How is it different from an eraser? It's instant. That's it.

>> No.7102530

>>7102015
yeah in terms of spacing and pressure you've already got a good basis, but like the other anon said construction is always key. usually any time you have a problem that you're not sure the cause is, you should try practicing basic construction and drawing spheres and cuboids in different lighting environments.
the thing that makes it a bit hard to accurately assess your example is mainly the fact that i don't know where the lighting is coming from or what emotion you're trying to convey, so i think starting simple with a human head and learning the planes of the face with an asaro head would be useful too, since that would have far more reference material available for it (notably Loomis).

>>7102219
it isn't bad at all to ctrl+z a lot, just that when you're starting it's going to keep you stunlocked into getting your lines "just right" because there aren't any downsides in the short-term to undoing a hundred times. when you're working on paper then you can only erase in the same spot maybe 5-10 times depending on how good your paper and eraser are before the paper starts to wear and the drawing gets muddy, so it's in your best interest to just stick to what you've got down and move on.

>> No.7102658

>>7102530
Yeah you're both right. If it doesn't look right before shading, like here >>7102128 then I guess you're doing it wrong, no amount of crosshatching will make it look good.
