this is what happens when you have no patience and rush everything. look at the haphazard hatching and ask yourself if OP actually slowed down and tried to think while working. now use OP as an example and slow the fuck down so you can actually make gains.

It's not a Bridgman or Loomis problem. Both Bridgman and Loomis were great artists in their own right and great teachers, both widely recommended by pretty much every artist who has ever made it.
You on the other hand are some faggot on an imageboard afllicted by the Dunning-Kruger effect.

not only is it possible for someone to make a thread with ulterior motives, not actually caring about the direct topic, but on /ic/ it's pretty clear that those sort of threads are made regularly. Chances are good that it's a certain anti-construction schizo who believes that the only TRUE way to learn to draw the form is to be a heckin' ingenue and reinvent the wheel by himself and anyone who uses construction is a hack. Also hates anything that isn't MUH REALISM and looks down his snoot at countless artists who are without a doubt much better than he is. Also never, ever posts his work to show how he measures up to his idealistic standards (naturally).
Hasn't been christened yet AFAIK, but I've run into this fag more than once.

What the fuck is your problem? Is it so bad to take a sheet of paper and a pencil? Do you really think that being a beginner you will achieve the subtlety of the strokes that the Bridgeman technique requires? The lines in your drawing appear to be made with a marker.

Pawell hasn't done that. At most, he makes shitty copies of a few figures every few pages, then calls the book "done"

What the fuck are we even arguing about here? Everyone knows pawell doesn't even use the books the way the authors suggest. No one's saying the books are a magic pill to mastery. They give you information, present methods to experiment with, and clarify some common issues, but it's up to you to replicate the life drawing experience.

Ron Lemen is a dirty scam liar. Bridgman books were printed from his sketchbook. Those giant classroom drawings have the same diagrams, but are not the same ones in his book. Bridgman simply memorized the same diagrams and repeated them over and over again, throughout his teaching career. Also, for some reason people believe that lie that Bridgman didn't write his own books. Again, another Ron Lemen lie.

because there is a high chance to go full Pawell and stay there forever
because using crutches right away without understanding the most basic ideas of what you are trying to do is t. worst process imaginable.

drawabox, Loomis, Bridgeman ... all this shit is made for one purpose and this one purpose alone: "get popular and sell as many books as you can." it's literally a product of the liberalization of art prodution to the masses (hobbyfication you might say), capitalist greed and dick measuring. who's got the longest dick? Loomis, Proko, Bridgeman?

DaVinci did fucking anatomy studies. art academies used to regularly go to hospital auditoriums to study bodies during autopsies. too edgy for this day and age ofc.

The only resource Pawell studied was Keys to Drawing, then his autistic obsession took over and he never learned anything new.
Now imagine if he had started with Scott Robertson instead of KtD. Imagine the autistic plan projections of Loomis blooks.

>So what is the actual way to improve?
1) Get a lot of references of the thing you want to learn how to draw.
2) Start by tracing the construction over references, e.g. if you’re learning heads you would trace the ball and jaw construction over the reference. The reference needs to TEACH you how it’s constructed, you can’t just make shit up.
3) Do freehand studies of references, using the construction process you figured out in step 2, and after each study overlay your drawing onto the reference. Analyze what mistakes you made and why. A bunch of quick studies where you don’t check your work will teach you NOTHING. You have to overlay your drawing onto the reference to see exactly WHERE and HOW you went wrong.
4) Do drawings from imagination using the construction method you practiced in steps 2 and 3. When something looks wrong, think critically about how your drawing is differing from the references. If you can’t figure out what’s wrong, look for references that are similar to what you’re trying to draw and do studies of them.
Repeat until satisfactory results are achieved.

i'm not even asian and i dunno wtf you are on about. I've got +10 years of exp, never in my life have i resorted to snake oil sellers like Loomis (picrel) and learned it the hard way, which is the best way. no one except microplastics in my brain can take that skillset away from me and i waste zero time on drawing spheres and boxes. the best diet for any artist is life drawing, urban sketching, getting good in trad.
literally the entire dogma of /ic/ faggots is based on snake oil sellers like Proko, Loomis, Bridgeman; downloading endless GB of video tutorials and becoming a basement dweller. lack of social skills that inevitably comes with this process is basically poison to any aspirations of making it in art related fields, as connections with real human beings, fellow artists and art handlers is the key to developement and a decent career.
/ic/ dogma is creating basement dwelling chronic masturbators that will spend all time of the day in front of their screens, spending thousands of dollars on worthless materials and pro software because they believe it will improve their skills.

I never consneeded, I was just taking my time.

You really think you're all that special just because you can copy what you see?
I've hardly ever copied anything at all, I'm an ADHDtarded doodlemaxxing boxdrawing loomis-loving faggot all the way, and I just now learned to do so to a level pretty similar to yours within less than 24 hours of practice. The first one took a lot of iterating to finally get my hand-eye coordination to click, then on the last attempt I nailed it to about 90% accuracy on the first take. The second one I banged out in 20 minutes or so in a single take. I also decided to neither undo nor erase while working on it. For all of it I forced myself to do it all freehand with no guidelines.

The last image is demonstrating why we loomis and boxes, so that we can do more than just copy, we can interpret and internalize reference and then freely manipulate it. My perspective is pretty shit and completely off the cuff but you get the gist of it.

Honestly it's really retarded to just completely dismiss a whole entire aspect of drawing just so you can reinvent the wheel and be "unique". Reminder that Kim Jung Gi was a constructoid working off the same principles as Bridgman and Loomis and all the rest, and he could not just draw from life but internalize extremely complex structures, anatomy of animals and humans, motorcycles, engines, cars, you name it. Honestly any accomplished constructoid is well able to draw from life or reference even better than you can and more than that actually memorize what they draw in a way that allows them to freely manipulate it as they wish with their imagination. It's not a tool to close yourself off from the world, what it truly is is a structure that allows you to understand it and internalize it in a way far deeper than just copying.

dude, this ms paint squiggly line stuff is the best you can do?

> t's really retarded to just completely dismiss a whole entire aspect of drawing just so you can reinvent the wheel and be "unique".
it depends on what you want and where you want to be. i for myself don't want to be another copy of a certain style that can be tought and resort to crutches like loomis. or try to be like Proko. i'm doing it the hard way and apparently it works out, as my stuff actually gets me grants, artists residencies, funds. i have external affirmation in that sense. i do understand most of /ic/ wants to be in advertisement and concept art, which is mostly for people who love to stare at screens, push pixels around and have a corner in their room trashed with pizza boxes and large Soda bottles.

>freely manipulate it as they wish with their imagination. It's not a tool to close yourself off from the world, what it truly is is a structure that allows you to understand it and internalize it in a way far deeper than just copying.
yep, that is a (t.) goal worth achieving. from what i saw, all the artists shilled on /ic/ have that strong "construction" vibe to their works and to be honest, it sucks. it seems stiff and cold. just my two cents, my dude.

yeah there's a lot of great stuff in the thread you linked, i give you that. it's besides the point though. i'm saying YOUR mental work and understanding of form, anatomy, shapes etc is far more important than learning by heart that a body measures 7 heads top to bottom and how to shizzle a cartoon head with potato cheeks out of a sphere using Loomis. would you deny that?

You're assuming an awful lot. For all anybody knows he spent a lot of time erasing and correcting each drawing and that's what he came up with. I know a lot of people find comfort in the "well he's not getting better because he's doing it wrong" belief, but sometimes people just reach their skill plateau that's at a level below what most people deem to be good, just like some people reach a good skill far far far faster than other artists, even when they're "just drawing"

in fact, the only ones that do, are those that has drawn for literal years, and thus has sheer mileage from so many sources, and still falsely claim to learn from just a single source.

> Step one: Just draw whatever you want
> Step two: do regular figure studies and figure drawing exercises

You'll get the most improvement from just doing that over and over. Once you get to a point where you're like: "Ok, I'm pretty good now." You can study other areas where you can tell you might need improvement or to "level up" but Steps 1 & 2 are the best formula to go from zero to hero.
