consider starting with just 2 tone studies, you can use a tone curve / contrast / posterization to separate light from dark
instead of using lines, block in shapes with the areas of light and shadow
you'll eventually want to move away from those tools(since they change the actual values), but it's a good starting point imo

I know this might be better placed in the animation thread, but frankly I'm getting better (actual) answers here.

I'm using keyframes to make this pumpkin roll around which worked well enough for this exercise. But I'd like to copy it to make multipe pumpkins roll side by side using the same preset keyframes. I duplicated the folder and nudged the copy right next to it, but the keyframes are still following the original position which I guess makes sense. Is there a way to move their reference point en masse, or just move them along the second with the second pumpkin? This is 30 seconds worth of keyframes and I don't want to do it all again 3 more times.

Pic related is the first pumkin.

>>7091497
And here's my failed attempt at duplicating the pumpkin an expecting the keyframe linked to the folder to move relative to the new position.
The solution to this problem is probably something searchable, but frankly I'm so new that I don't know what to search aside from duplicate keyframes which is not what I need.

I would work on line variation when drawing figures to emphasize forms, forget about rendering/shading for a bit until you can create quicker lines with less effort, right now you have a very stiff look which feels like trace work rather than drawing. one thing you're doing well is having long unbroken bold lines

>>7091600
BRUTAL lol good movement, the overall figure is off but I think this was that quick sketch site so you did well with those tools

>>7091629
Arm form is improved but the face looks about the same, try drawing more human faces and mix it in with drawing anime faces of styles you enjoy. Good luck anon.

>>7091631
Draw slower and use less lines per contour, limit yourself to 2-3 to carve out the form and try your best to draw what you see in the reference photo instead of what you think a "face should look like" once you build accuracy in hand co-ordination to create the lines you see then you'll be set. Also feel free to do random sketches too, only studying will get boring and kill the fun/creativity for a lot of people but up to you.

>>7091639
Would recommend drawing with more references and zoom in, your lines are a bit stiff try timed drawings, 30 seconds per reference then after a couple try one large drawing 30 minutes with reference.

I find my accuracy progress frustratingly slow. Sometimes I'll nail the lines and the very next attempt they're terribly off. Observation and proportion being basically THE fundamental only makes me feel all the dumber. I know the answer is to practice more to get more consistent, it's just that my emotions end up getting in the way and as a result I don't practice nearly as much as I could.

I think you can benefit from measuring more, you already know the rule of thirds and halves, so after you find those, look for ratios on your subject, e.g. height vs. width, which third is the largest, etc. This will also help to retain the likeness.

that wrench is garbage. no one in their right mind would use a box end wrench like that. it's just asking for rounded bolt heads. at least it's a 6 point on the closed end, but really she should have an impact wrench or if you're set on an antiquated wrench, a flare nut wrench is about the only wrench you would ever want to use. also the size of the wrench indicates a very large bolt which is probably spec'd way higher than she could break, and certainly higher than that wrench could put out before slipping

Draw faces anyways. It's better to mess up on stuff early so that you have a better idea on how to approach it if you learn it in depth later. It's also good that you're taking notes on your mistakes, not a lot of beginners do that. It's a lot easier to focus on what to fix as well. As for fixing them, yeah, you're just gonna have to draw more. You're at a stage where quantity matters more than quality, in order for you to just get used to drawing in general. Since you're doing copies, for now you should focus on being accurate.

>>7092321
The copy looks good so far, keep going
>how the fuck do you study perspective
Read Perspective Made Easy and draw boxes in perspective. Perspective is the backbone of a lot of concepts in art, you'll use it a lot more often than you'd think. "Feeling the form" >>7092162 is a lot easier if you have perspective nailed down since you have a better understanding of the overlaps of the body and depicting them correctly.

Don't focus too much on exactly replicating the contour.
Use very light straight lines (and slightly curved lines) for your lay-in and focus on getting the correct angles and lengths.
Look at negative shapes (between hand, hair, and chest) and copy them.
Use vertical and horizontal lines to find arrangements (chin aligns with bottom of hair, jawline aligns with top of sleeve, etc.)
You should only get into the details once you are sure your proportions are correct.

Seems you have a basic, solid understanding of perspective. It gets a little distorted in some places (like in the bottom figure's right calf) but otherwise it's pretty accurate and gets the job done. I suggest you focus on making your lines cleaner so you can easily see that distortion and fix it right away, rather than make it harder when you do your final lineart.

This is my 4th charcoal drawing. There’s been significant improvements over each one which I’m happy about. I don’t spend a lot of time on them or study anything other than a few YouTube videos because last time I tried that with pencil it sucked the joy out of it for me because I sucked so bad. This medium is much better for me to “build” up the image. Still a lot of work to do however.

I know the eyes are off and the mouth is a bit contorted to the side rather than just pouty like the reference, but I overworked the paper and can’t really take or add more at this point.

any other improvements you’d recommend?

Hard light color is where he applies color through color layers, and maybe multiply layers too
Through chara is where he applies overlay layers and maybe some other layers to modify the colors a bit so that they don't look so muddy
And as for the other groups like Through BG and Through EFF they are grayscale for the small pets in the back and front of the char, and the other Through filter they are probably color and overlay layers also for the background and foreground pets.

You shouldn't try to complicate yourself with multiple light sources right from the start, that said in your drawing you could probably get away with throwing the character in full shadow and using the light from the moon as a rim light. The light from the buildings wouldn't really reach the char since they are too far away and artificial light has quick drop off.
The only way your light would work if there was a light nearby and a bit above your character.
Also eyes in profile are triangle shaped and don't try to draw individual hair strands, just go for big shapes and then and smaller ones.
If you don't know where to put shadows and lights on the face then you need to study the planes of the face or maybe copy some shapes that other artists are using. Sorry for the rough paintover.

I usually try to do the contour first as a starting point - as if they were boundary lines for the drawing, but checking the reference lines you drew made me realize why it's not a good approach as I don't have a good reference of the size of each element in the picture, will try to apply your advice and try to identify forms instead of contours first.

NTA but you pretty much got it. If you are actively learning something you gotta be able to do it even if you or others consider it "bad". Shit ya gotta start somewhere as long as you strive for improvement and keep it enjoyable for you.

Alrighty so I took a break for about two weeks, why?

1. My wrist was starting to feel tired.
2. I could sense burn out coming on, so I decided to take a break for two weeks just to prevent it from happening. I will tell you near the end of that break I kept thinking about drawing and things I wanted to draw (even having dreams about drawing).
3. I wanted to see how rusty I would get after two weeks of not drawing.

I can say that while I definitely felt a tad rusty/unconfident in my lines, that is quickly going away and I am reverting back to my previous level of line confidence before I started my break.

However, I dunno if these Ellipses I did as a part of my practice look any different in a positive/negative way after the break. The before is from last month before the break, the after is from today.

Also, i for some reason when doing these Ellipses...I feel weird? Like I feel derealized/out of it/anxious when I do them? I am not sure why but does anyone have a theory as to that? Other drawings I do don't cause the same feeling.

Litearlly the same. Now draw what you want to draw instead.

>> No.7092872

I've been thinking about gesture. It's kind of a way to more efficiently understand something through abstract ways, right? As in, theoretically, you could draw a perfect pose using pure observation alone, but that would be tedious and inefficient so we use these intuitive skills to be more accurate.

It's called the archetype of puer aternus, the man child. Oh you're so creative, you're so special, you have so good ideas, unlike all the other boring people. how unfair it is that the world did not bless you with the motivation, as if hard working people have it easy and they don't have to try. And then when in the rare moment motivation hits, you pick up some course, or book and dream of becoming a big artist, but just as it gets harder and a little uncomfortable you put it down and abandon it completely, because uncomfortable things suck, and move on to the next thing, and who cares, it was a bad book anyway, why stick with something that is not perfect.

It's okay though. The real you is sleeping. Your real life has not started yet. Maybe tomorrow will be the day you will have an easy time drawing and finally figure out everything. Why bother drawing until then anyway.

kinda but not really. gesture drawings are to capture the flow/rhythm/force of a pose and loosen up the natural inclination to dwell on details without focusing on the anatomy. its meant to be used in conjunction with anatomy studies when you're building up a pose. different sides of the same coin

I'm a huge fan of the 'force' method of gesture drawings
