Here's some examples of the current skill level of one of the artists mutuals I consider the most competent in terms of art skills and with a similar enough art style and draftmanship to what I want to achieve as a first big goal.

At this point he's legit published manga art level good and it makes me want to work hard out of jealously and rage for the fact I'm not on his skill level yet. Is ignoring some fundamentals like rendering and background worth it if I want to just skyrocket the quality of my character focused art and inking quickly? Also any tips in general for switching to a significantly more detailed art style in general despite being limited by my actual draftmanship and habits?
I usually draw 30 minutes to 3/4 hours everyday and mostly for fun, I barely study in general those days but I want to start getting on the right path.

My core sketching/intuitive perspective/construction abilities are still /beg/ tier and I'm slow as fuck when it comes to output btw, but the first thing I want to improve is my poses and anatomy followed by faces and hands. My main source is Loomis, Villpu and some David Finch stuff.
Thanks for the help.

>Is ignoring [...] fundamentals [...] worth it
Eventually you will need to come back to the fundamentals. But you also have to manage your study time, so if you only have 30 minutes a day to draw and you want to get better at figure drawing and inking; that's where you spend those 30 minutes. However: 30 minutes daily, even over years, won't yield you a lot of gains.

when you're completely green your only goal is to get the pencil from point A to point B, to be able to see or imagine a line or curve and get it on paper without your hands shaking or your brain tricking you into thinking it's at a different angle than it really is. This is what all the pre-"fundies" books go over so you're on the right track
the downside to using anime girls in your copying phase is that placing an eye a little too low is a lot more offputting than placing a tree branch a little lower than it was on the photo

>> No.7089624

Guys, I'm incredibly confused. I can see my (and others') obvious mistakes fairly well, like bad proportions, or incorrect perspective/foreshortening for example, but even though I see them I can't draw (or even redline others' drawings) properly either. Do I just need more practice (since my eyes are ahead of my hands or something like that idk), or am I approaching this in a fundamentally incorrect way in the first place?

>> No.7089625

When you see a mistake in an algorithm you might not know how to fix it but you do know what the algorithm is supposed to be outputting
This is similar to drawing, you wouldn't know how something looks wrong without first knowing how it's supposed to look instead? It's basically self evident, people have inherent knowledge about anatomy/proportions/gesture and yet they can't put it to paper
HOW does this happen?

proportions is key though. continuing to hammer in your ability to draw proportions is what will let you be able to solve any drawing problem, and overcome any difficulty you have. unless you are doing right side of brain, you should do the text fully. Hello, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

I want to learn more about visual art for two main reasons, to design/flesh out OCs and to mess around making 3d models/animations. I don't think I need to learn how to draw to do these things, but I don't know enough to be sure. Would it be necessary/very beneficial to go through the google doc and learn how to draw?

I am sure that when you sculpt/color/animate characrers in blenders, you'll magically gain knowledge about perspective, anatomy, stylization, shading, color theory, composition etc. LMAO. Go on. Make me laugh :). Even real life sculptors have to make several sketches before lifting their chisel.

>> No.7091163

>>7091158
okay gotcha. my perspective was it's probably enough to read about this stuff and then try to translate it by experimenting in blender/etc. So definitely start from the basics? thanks for the insight
