Please explain to me wtf is gesture and why do we do it, what is its purpose. If I should spend hours on drawing still lifes, then why should I make these dynamic stuff on figure drawings?

Also, should I really practice that as a beginner? Drawing a still human from a picture is hard enough. and idk proportions. I feel like this gesture stuff just makes things more complicated. But Im not gonna back off from a challenge.

gesture helps with making poses look more fluid, like look at any manga or anime you've watched, especially the action scenes. you'll notice their poses are fluid or not so stiff (hopefully). that's because of gesture. Gesture captures the motion, Construction captures the form of the being.

Decided to take the timer off and slow down on figure sketches as I try to get better at representing the main masses of the body. Still not really "feeling the form" but I've only been learning for 2 months so I think more mileage is really the key. Also going to work my way up to more complete mannequinization with the Proko figure fundies course.

I marked what I think is the line of action on the ref, and another line that juxtaposes it in quite a cool way.

Make it tighter around the breasts and waist so it wraps around the form of the curves and show that with your shading. I looked up refs and did some experimenting, I think its best if the sweater only clings to the breasts not the waists. I noticed in anime pics of busty girls in sweaters, they have this "Y" shape above the breasts that don't show up in actual photos, I think that's pretty key to selling the illusion. Can someone help me with clip studio paint?
I normally use photoshop for drawing cartoons, but I want to animate so I switched over. I was drawing a character height sheet and scaled it down and now it looks extra blurry. I tried googling and youtube but everything seems to be about saving stuff to pngs and resizing that, when I want to change stuff on the fly. Photoshop had a smart object option that kept things sharp but I either can't find it on csp or it doesn't exist.

I consider my anatomy intermediate + I rarely draw the back so take my advice w/ some skepticism. Also I didn't pay any mind to the arm placement so ignore that

Keep in mind S-curves along the figure, it'll help make the body more natural. It also helps to learn some basic anatomy (pay attention to traps, deltoids, latissimus dorsi, and scapula). Parts of the body are rotated too much which make the pose more stiff, draw things at more natural angles. If I were you I'd angle the head slightly so you can see more of the bottom.

Once you're aware of the more basic anatomy it'll help you simplify things in a more natural way

I recommend just dropping this piece and just taking a bit to study for a bit. It's no use hammering your head against something beyond your level, because it will only burn you out in the short term. Just keep studying, and suddenly, you'll find yourself able to do things you couldn't before.

I recommend doing the David Finch guide and copying Bridgman (or taco) twice, if you're up for it. I also recently have really fallen in love with Jason Brubaker's cognitive drawing sy stem

you can start by transcending the shackles of classroom learning and learning from the great masters (ero manga senseis)

Go on twitter and find your favorite artists. Download all their work. Then, import an image you want to study into your canvas and copy it side by side. When you're done, redraw it from memory, without looking at anything. Then, copy it again.

Just by doing this, you'll improve 10x faster than anybody in this thread

I'd start with building the habit of drawing everyday. Set clear art goals. Actually draw the stuff I want to draw. Study my weaknesses and apply what I learn to new pieces.

In general, Proko's Drawing Basics playlist is a good start for anyone.

Then you should tailor your studying to your goals and personal preferences. Learning to self direct your learning is also a skill you need to develop.

You have a limited amount of time in a day anon. You need to ask yourself if it's reasonable to expect yourself to be able to do all of that and then draw on top of that. Otherwise nothing will change. I'm not saying it needs to be an "either X or Y" situation though. You can do things like simply going to the gym less, meal-prepping on the weekends to not spend so much time after work cooking/preparing food.
I also recommend not comparing yourself to others in that way. I know it's frustrating to not be able to progress as quickly as other people, but as you said, you got shit going on and you're doing your best.

This is not strictly an art question, but it's something that's deeply integral to my journey on trying to become a /beg/ at least. Are there any tips or outright methods for dealing with the mental aspect of trying to pick up drawing as someone who is admittedly addicted to instant gratification and easy dopamine release? To make matters worse I was supposedly a "gifted kid" when it came to studying, so the easy stuff was always too easy and I never really learned how to learn properly. However bad you feel about not being "as good as you should be" at your age, you'll feel worse if you put off putting in the effort another year.

Sucking ass is a filter everyone has to pass to be good.
People who are afraid to do poorly get stuck and don't pass it, because not trying is less painful than failing.

You have to realize that the only way to learn is by doing. You can read any number of books, but without putting pen to paper that knowledge will never crystalize.
Everyone who's ever gotten good has gone through the long process of trying, failing, trying, analyzing, experimenting, trying, failing a bit less...

They just are
Eyes are the most, idk, specific part of the human face. Humans are very good at noticing if something is off with a human body, even better at noticing if something is off with a human face, but better than anything else at noticing if someone is even a tiny bit off with an eye, because our brains are hard-wired to recognize human bodies, human faces and human eyes
Eyes make the face, if they're fucked up everything is fucked up. There's a reason why you can recognize a person just from their eyes or even only one eye, but if you take a face and you cover the eyes with a black bar the person becomes unrecognizable unless they're literally your immediate family, and even then you might take a minute to clock them

Boxes yes, Bridgman no, forms and gesture etc. definitely. The first thing you need to do is git gud at drawing what you actually see. Make accurate copies. Train observational drawing. That’s step zero. Then you learn to feel the form and gesture shape and so on. So learn to copy and draw basically okay, then you study the artists you want to emulate using the cognitive drawing method, where you do a copy, redraw from memory, and repeat until the memory one looks right. After a while, you could do the Naoki Sato thing where you’ve try to draw an original drawing in that artist’s super. This will teach you to draw the way you want when you draw your own stuff.

TLDR: copy the artists you want to emulate

these are the most torturous, painful, impossible exercises ever invented. I did these for 3 months straight, 30 minutes a day, and barely improved. These wouldn't be so impossible, if it weren't for the fact that Guptill said you couldn't turn your page when doing these. Turning your page is in fact necessary for actual ink drawings, so it doesn't make sense to torture yourself by not turning the page.

On the other hand, I gained an incredible amount of hatching skill just by doing master copies. The first guy I copied was Vesalius and his ancient anatomy plates back from the renaissance. I didn't even do that great of a job with the copy, but ever since then, for the last 6 years, I've known exactly how, where, and why to apply cross hatching. And as I draw more, my dexterity automatically goes up.

These exercises are totally pointless

I don't mind the rail thing on the right. since we don't know what exactly it is (on location), just from the picture alone, it could be a snowy dock or something.
i think covering it with some white would mess up the light blue wash underneath, which looks cool. so i would just leave it.

What are you even doing? If you just want to "practice proportions" with those squares, then just overlay them over your photo and see the result, no need to post it here. What did you learn, having drawn this connection? Nothing in human body connects like that.
Do you want to learn figure drawing? Then study it, read and watch material, learn landmarks, learn to draw 3d form instead of 2d school geometry shapes. Read the sticky. Read Loomis, Vilppu, Hampton. watch Proko. For prebeg I'd recommend Eviston's courses on /ic/ torrent - on basics of drawing and on figure drawing. Or read whatever other anons mention ITT, because it really looks like you're just drawing blindly without any study whatsoever, trying to conjure up skills from thin air. Not a single beg book or course or any material ever proposes to do anything that looks like what you are doing.

I'm the one who is saying those exercises are pointless. Yes, you will get contradictory advice. Yes, you will have to make your own decisions yourself. Learning to draw, or learning any skill, involves cutting through dilemma after dilemma, hurdle after hurdle, all based on your own judgement. I remember struggling with how to do gesture in the beginning, whether to do it the proko way, the vilppu way, the steve huston way, etc. Then, I struggled with whether measurement and shape copying was important, or if I should approach everything in a 3d sense. That seemed like a real dilemma to me at the time. Then, I later struggled with whether I should go into manga, or if I should focus on animation. Then, I struggled with whether i should practice painting, or focus on line drawing, since I decided on mainly manga. Then, I later struggled with whether I should be doing memory drawings or just doing a higher volume of straight copies.

You will never get a straight answer, especially the deeper you get into a skill. The opinions diverge, people specialize, and nobody agrees on anything. Welcome to art.

im glad you realized it's similar, because I made both posts

You really need to try memory drawings for yourself

My experience was: ~9 months of doing copies, and making 0 progress. My art and portfolio work didn't change at all. Information went in one ear, and out the other

Then, with 1 single day of doing a few memory drawings, my art changed. The way I drew comics suddenly looked similar to the masters I was studying.

Memory drawings not only force you to recall and retain info, they force you to pay closer attention to the reference when you're doing the actual copy. It's too easy to copy mindlessly and not learn anything. Also, memory drawings transfer your studies to your imagination work. How many people have you heard say that their referenced work looks much better than their imagination work? Simply redrawing your work one more time, even imperfectly, fixes all these issues

>> No.7087790

>>7087763
>>Get told to simplify it into cubes
There isn't a single cube in your picture. Not a single 3d form. The very first fundamental being taught in books for prebegs is to see and draw 3d shapes. Whatever you are doing won't help you to learn to draw.
You can train precision by "blocking in" and comparing to ref. But if that's what you are doing. there's no point in wasting your time posting it here - you should do hundreds of these to train precision.
>You guys could at least have some consistency in your advice.

yey, im happy you saved that

for more advice, I do think rectangles and circles are great way to simplify the figure at first, and I can see the tremendous improvement you made from last time already

however, while you should keep practicing simple shapes, I also think you will make much faster progress copying art, instead of photos. It's a much easier business copying lines, instead of translating a photo into lines. Try following a bunch of artists on twitter and downloading their art. Spend 30-40 minutes doing one really long, exact copy. Doing that every day, will teach you so much

If you don't know any artists, I recommend starting with Philtomato, or some other mangaka you know about. They probably post on twitter

You will never memorize everything in the world so you will always need reference but you can still internalize a lot of the main things you draw the most often. Memory drawing will help you understand and remember your references better. It’s not that you should draw small sections because you should always try to keep the full picture in mind but pick one main aspect at a time to practice and then try to replicate it yourself. I am dumb as fuck in this case then, because if I ask someone an advice I will try to follow the advice, if I knew what to do I woulnd't be asking for help.

Fair point. I went with irl photos because there's plenty of nude models to work with and I wanted to avoid clothing until I got comfortable with proportions. I tried copying a while back, I'll give it another go.

I really do appreciate the help you've given. Thanks again.

skipping will only constitute to weak links in your foundation. Just stick with it. in resistance training, you'll make progress on a bad program so long as you stick with it. People that program hop typically don't make a whole lot of progress. Same with art or anything else for that matter. They're necessary because the course demands it, whether your a professional or not.

Measuring is the same regardless of medium and is a critical skill that most people neglect. If you can't accurately observe the proportional relationships of your subject, you're going to place features on the page where they aren't in relation to everything else.

I think i know why. Basically reason why you draw heads bigger might be other than not paying attention to proportions can be factor that you see head as important so you make it larger. Kinda like when people draw eyes and make them bigger because they see them as really important and that gets into their mind and becomes a habit.

For digital I'd recommend going to /asg/ and finding Krenz precision training video and materials. Measuring doesn't translate to digital, but training precision and observation will transfer both ways. So you can complement digital precision training with trad pencil and paper drawings. The rest of the course transfers to digital with no problems.

Didn't have fun with this one. Mainly because of the face. It's just a weird angle that I couldn't draw looking good, so I got burned out and wanted to hastily """"finish""" this, hence shitty sloppy lazy line work.
