>What's a webtoon?
Webtoon is the ancient Korean art of scrolling comics. Instead of traditional manga/comic pages, panels are spread out individually for easier reading on cell phones.

>So they're just spliced manga/comic pages?
You can do that if you want, but they're fundamentally different for a few reasons. For example, panels tend to be drawn longer to fit phone screens, and traditional 2-page spreads are not possible to fit in scrolling format.

>Are there standard page sizes?
Technically yes, but it depends on which platform you post in. Naver Webtoons uses
800x1280px, but the site automatically splices & resizes images anyway.

>Do I have to make it in color?
If you want subscribers, yes.

>Why would I make one?
To be rich & famous, of course. All jokes aside, the pay is low if you're lucky enough to get hired in the first place, the deadlines are more brutal than the manga industry, and the average reader age floats around 11. But as a novel medium with a growing industry, it may still be worthwhile enough for you to experiment.

a large fundamental problem with mmg is that mmg doesn't draw manga, they draw characters in the manga style, but they don't actually draw manga or comics
webtoon is more detached from a specific style so it will most likely attract people that make actual web comics rather then the 7th anime drawing thread

Going on a little schizo rant. Does quality even matter on Webtoon? The majority of really popular titles look vomit-inducing with bad-looking 3d-screenshots.jpeg, where 0 touch-ups have been done, being used as backgrounds.
The actual drawings don't look great either, if they're not traced 3d with a billion layer modes slapped on top, basically creating polished turds. And when they do manage to draw a great drawing then they fuck it all up by straight up MOTION BLURRING the entire thing to hell and back to convey movement because fuck visibility and clean art, right? Have they not heard about using strong poses and gesture lines / speed lines to showcase movement?

Not to mention that pretty much every popular creator on that site rapes the fundamentals of comics that it makes me cry. Paneling? What paneling? Just spam full canvas drawings and a speech bubble here and there, done.
Lettering? These people think that lettering is just using an ugly, pre-installed font for everything. There are so many great copyright-free fonts out there and even the ones that require a license aren't even that expensive if you're an individual artist.
Also, these dumbasses use SFX lettering so wrong it gives me an aneurysm. Instead of writing the SFX, the sound effect an action makes, they just write the action as a word, period. If I see one more "GRAB", "PULL" or "CLENCH" used as a SFX I'm gonna kill myself.
Isn't the point of a comic that you can SHOW the reader what action is being taken? If you have to quite literally spell out what action is going on in a panel, then that simply means your drawing fucking sucks at conveying the action!

Is the average webtoon-reading kid so used to the quality of the average webtoon, that they don't even notice how bad it is? I know it's just a bunch of consoom-addicted kids that care more about quantity rather than quality but come on! This isn't art. This is just fast food meant for fast consumption and then to be thrown out.

Yes, I can overlook bad art if the comic fundamentals are solid and the writing is good. The One Punch Man webcomic has below-average art but the paneling itself and the composition within the panels are great, creating a smooth and enjoyable reading experience.
There's just so much corner-cutting and disregard for a great reading flow within webtoons that it is genuinely immersion-breaking for me.

I guess a lot of that comes from the format itself (vertical scrolling) and phone readers being the majority of the audience. But still, I read manga just fine on my phone. If a panel or text is too small I can simply zoom in.
Most webtoon artists are also biting off way more than they can chew by not only choosing to create a series that requires 100+ Chapters but making each chapter very long and drawing in fucking full-color and sometimes even having complex rendering on top of it, releasing it on a way too tight schedule! It's as if artists that have mainly done illustrations decided to create comics, without even knowing the very basics of its fundamentals. It's as if they think comics are just illustrations with a speech bubble here and there.

The most popular comics tend to be of the embarrassingly indulgent variety. Think love triangles, cheating, outdated yaoi conventions, self-insert romances with guys who look suspiciously identical to irl kpop idols. I think even the kids reading this stuff know it's low quality, they just don't expect anything more from on the nose content. And there's so much of it because it really is easier to make. I believe it's because of the scrolling format because it encourages readers to spend less time reading a chapter, observing art, etc. This creates more demand and closer deadlines which is why the art is low quality. The fact that authors know most readers won't spend more than 20 seconds observing their entire chapter scroll also encourages them to half ass it. There are exceptions I think but most of them have low readership because if you can't post 3 chapters a day no one's gonna read you as your stuff will stay buried in a pile of trash. A questionable publishing platform concept

I had an easier time with drawing chapters when I realized this because I had the opposite problem. It's ok to spend a few hours on some select impact panels but most panels should be drawn simple it's they're not conveying a lot of or important information.

>I know it's just a bunch of consoom-addicted kids that care more about quantity rather than quality
And there is your answer: It's really just modern audiences and minors on the internet.

You're very aware of it too by saying
>uuuhm guys imma go on a little schizo rant
You're on a hobby board talking about hobbys. This level of discussion should be expected and not excused because zoomers will turn into rabid animals if they see more than two words strung together.

I mean, if power fantasy harem isekai and korean slop are still incredibly well received despite being atrociously written and the same story over and over, that should tell you a lot.

Most who read that stuff do not care about quality, just consuming thing that thematically fits their semblance of a personality and interests just so they can "escape reality" and "talk about it online" because consuming product is only about escaping reality and circlejerking about it with others.
People like that would buy literal shit in a can and this phenomenon only got worse thanks to unfiltered and unlimited access to the internet by minors and retards.

Of course, because they have no concept of how creating anything works, due to having had infinite content at the touch of their fingers all their lives.

I can't really put the whole blame on whoever makes the slop, with any good conscience, because ultimately it is the consumers who decide what sells and what does not and we live in an era where an illustration is considered worse than an anime girl floating in a white void because
>more visual information overloads the scrolling zoomer's brain
You can see parallels to how webtoons are built based on how the average normie behaves and consumes.

They can't decipher visual information and have absolutely no imagination to speak of, hence why you need to tell them what the character is doing, in written form while having an image accompanying it; much like children's book are made.

>because they have no concept of how creating anything works, due to having had infinite content at the touch of their fingers all their lives.
Be fair, it's not like consumers before them were any better. You simply can't expect your average reader to fully grasp the work that goes into comics, zoomers or not.

>> No.7075091

>>7075075
But it would also not be fair to not point out that consumer behavior got incredibly worse as of the last decade.

One can imagine the kind of work that goes on when doing something, but a younger and uneducated audience will just demand and then complain when their unreasonable demands are not met.

We're experiencing and seeing this way more exactly because of the internet.

It is unlikely 7/11 would want to go after you, but it's never impossible. If McD wanted to go after every single mangaka that used "WacDonalds" or Starbucks wanted to go after everyone who used "Starbooks", they could. They'd have to somehow show in a court of law how there was likelihood of confusion and some kind of alleged harm, but they could still FILE the lawsuit.

That said, omeow for better or for worse you're an anon that's just making cute and funny comics for people to enjoy. Even just looking at internet popularity alone, you're still a relative nobody (compared to XYZ e-celeb, not trying to put you down or anything since I like your stuff). Odds are that you're so below the radar that it isn't worth a corporation's time to try to notice you, let alone squash. It's just that the odds are never zero.

The general rule for stuff like this is corporations only care if there's serious money to be made (or lose) then legal action is taken, but otherwise it's all just free advertising for them. But in my opinion I would take the opportunity to make your own in-universe franchise, there's more creative liberties and you could use subtle world building. For example, why don't you make the gas station UFO themed? Call it something like rocket stop or galaxy express, and have some running gags with Zag commenting on how tacky the ayylmao theme is.

>For example, why don't you make the gas station UFO themed? Call it something like rocket stop or galaxy express, and have some running gags with Zag commenting on how tacky the ayylmao theme is.
I was originally planning on doing this, to make it like the tourist towns near NV, but thought it might be an overload of too much aliens. That said it fits the comic. I settled on going with a relatable franchise because I thought it would help ground the comic and seperate Penny's alien world from her boring wage slave life. I'll see what I can come up with. I also need to come up with a good name for her town, but that won't be hard.

That's what you want, at least that's what I would think. It's OK to go overboard, people are going to get the message very easily. You shouldn't worry about trying to be subtle or grounding the comic in reality, people are looking for escapism anyway.

>How touristy is Penny's hometown supposed to be? Is it a genuine do-nothing dusty gulch
In my initial conception it's a do-nothing gulch inspired by Baker, CA, Rachel, NV and the little towns near Joshua Tree. If Rachel is the well-known official UFO tourist trap town, Penny's town is more off the beaten path and has even less going on. You're right that a town like this would definitely be covered in Alien schlock to try and get any tourists who drive by on the high way. The alien theme convenience store can also be where Penny got her patented ayylmao hoodie from.

In the story Penny wasn't born and raised in this town, she's from a suburb. Penny moved to the desert alone after her UFO researcher aunt and uncle disappeared. They left their trailer and small plot of land to her in their will. The land has a trailer, a wind generator, and a broken down pickup truck. The trailer is full of weird UFO research inventions created by Penny's aunt and uncle, and she doesn't know if they even work. Penny was always shy and antisocial, but became a full antisocial femcel when she moved out to the trailer and stopped sleeping much. She now dedicates all her time to working on her aunt and uncle's website to carry on their legacy, and prove once and for all that we aren't alone in the universe. She works at the combini to pay the bills, then stays up late writing articles and doing alien research.

Your backstory write-up is pretty good thus far. Given how your comic is going to be light-hearted, are you going to go into any backstory as to how Penny's uncle and aunt passed away? Did they just die of natural causes, or did they Heaven's Gate themselves (probably WAY too dark)?

As for UFO doodads, something you may want to consider is whether any of it is going to be nuclear material/radiation based (or not, if it's just a fake). Given that a lot of the alien stuff happened at the same time as all the craze over radiation as the new "super" material, there was definitely some overlap, which is how a lot of early stuff was able to glow in the dark. You don't have to care for any of this that I'm writing, just wanted to throw some stuff out there in case it might help you.

There are too many deeplore spoilers to answer that question fully, but let us just say that they went deep in to the desert on a UFO research trip and were never seen again. Their bodies and vehicle were never found and recovered...

Realistically, it probably would be, but I'm not going to dive in to all that, as tempting as it is. The plan is to focus on the romance, characters and comedy.

Working on his prince uniform. What do you think?

>> No.7077935

>>7077926
I like the general theme of the outfit/royal robes, but I feel like it's slightly too busy, like I'm not sure where my eyes are supposed to be dragged to. I think part of it might be that there are too many colors. Looking around, I see black, red, gold, steel (silver?), dark salmon, the off-white of his shoulder pointy pauldron, the blue of his cape, blue jewels, and purple jewels. And that's not including his skin and his neon green hair. It's a lot going on.

>> No.7077943

>>7077935
Do you think it would work better if I went with greys, blacks and darker reds only, and no gold? This would make his skin and hair stand out. The stones are meant to be mayanite, a crystal associated with pluto. In this comic, all those crystal energy people are vindicated- the alien civilizations all use gem stones for energy to power their technology and also improve their health and auras.

>> No.7077952

>>7077943
So there's a million ways you can take this, since the sky's the limit with color scheming. Plus this is your webcomic, and I would frankly feel bad trying to shove what I consider to be the "right" color scheme onto you. This is your baby, after all.

You could go for grey, black, and dark reds only - this would help contrast his skin and hair, but at the same time you're skirting real close to going full Sith lord/Avatar fire nation status there lmao. Are they supposed to be evil, but Zag is the nice one?

Or what you can do is pick something like a color within the same general color family of his skin/hair (like say, a turquoise or an aquamarine) as the main color for his outfit, and then use the gem colors to provide a color accent as needed. And you can fine-tune the colors as needed so things don't end up all washed together.

What may also help is deciding what particular historical empire you're trying to base Zag's civilization/outfit on, and then look at what historical colors have worked for that civilization. Then to make it more space-y and gem-y, you can shift everything over while maintaining the same color balances.

I played around with it, I had a few suggestions.
1. No cape. He seems like the type of guy who would go against wearing it because of how active he is and it seems like something that would be reserved for the actual king or otherwise ruling monarch.
2. Ditch the red, switch to purple. Green/purple is an underrated color combo. Overall, a cooler color palette suits him better in my opinion, especially since Pluto is a cold, cold planet. Maybe even add fur in some places.
3. Swapped the gems at the end of his belt tassels to match his hair. The earrings match his clothes but the belt tassel gems match his hair.
4. Deeper yellow, still used as an accent but in less places.

That's bretty gud, omeow. A lot less busy to the eyes while retaining the general costume. The clothes you've chosen already kind of look vaguely like steppe clothing/a Mongolian deel, so yeah fur could work. Maybe at the borders of his outer robe, or on the edges of the bottom of the hat?

They aren't evil sith firenation conquerors, but House Plouton are way more serious than Zag. Ruling and administering a country is hard enough, think how hard it would be to rule and administer an entire planet and also having to deal with alliances and politicking in the Galactic Federation? I was going for Space Game of Thrones.

>What may also help is deciding what particular historical empire you're trying to base Zag's civilization/outfit on, and then look at what historical colors have worked for that civilization. I was going for a Russo-Korean-steppes mixed hybrid type of inspiration for the outfit.
>>7078049
You're right it looks better and more prince like without the cape. Purple and green looks good , I wanted this costume to look more traditionally masculine and thought purple combined with his bishi looks would be too feminine.

The red was also inspired by Pluto turning red. Pluto is a freezing place, the civilization exists in underwater cities and buildings on the sea floor beneath the ice caps, I guess underwater bubble cities Otah Gunga in Phantom Menace is how I envision them living. I'll work on prince outfit 2.0. In the comic I'm planning for his debut intro to be in his royal costume so it has to be a cool husbando look that drives all the female readers crazy for him.

I wanted his prince design to have some alien edge. Royal space politics are not only full of backstabbing and courtly intrigue, but there is also a ton of bureaucracy. House Plouton are in charge of the Galactic Federation's banking and wealth sector. It is a very orderly, sterile and cold place in the Plutonian royal court. Zag is not about any of that mess. One of the main reasons he weebs out for and idolizes Earth culture so much is because how different it is from where he grew up.

First, I always write some sort of script, picrel is what it looks like (it's in spanish bc it's my main language) Once I have a basic idea of what will happen in the chapter, I start sketching. I always finish the entire sketch before moving on to line art. It's usually at this stage when I detect issues, and I have to modify, add, or remove some dialogues or pannels.
Then I do flat colors for the characters and backgrounds, then lights and shadows. And lastly I translate the dialogue and make speech bubbles.

As for keeping track of my story, I have some google documents with anotations and timelines. And that's about it.

But I kind of understand why they do it, the majority of webtoon creators are amateurs that made it into originals, and they suddenly have to deliver an insane amount of panels every week.
I'm still an amateur myself, like everyone else here, and it's really hard for me to clearly convey actions with just drawings, but I can afford the time to redraw some panels, or try different things because I just make 20 panels every 2 weeks or so, and my deadline is self imposed, but they don't have time for that.

A very popular series set in the recent past is Reply. It has three seasons, with each going further back in time: 1997, 1994, 1988. Instead of the usual stereotypical K-drama stuff, it tries to be more grounded and keep them as just normal people who lived during those times. Highly recommend.

If you want something that's set more in the modern day but is about high school, the manhwa live-action adaptation of True Beauty is "ok" enough. The plot is simplistic but it has enough funny moments that I don't mind.

If you're looking for a good historical drama, I would highly recommend Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung, which is set during early 1800s Joseon.

Holy shit thank you so much! That means a lot to me anon, I'm so glad you enjoy the read. If you watched Twin Peaks that'd be why it seems familiar since I take a lot of inspiration from it.

As for learning, I just started copying manga panels, mostly Akira in the beginning. I didn't start real figure drawing until much later which I'm sure hurt me and I'd probably be a lot farther along now if I just started with figures. Composition I studied from just observing manga and film breakdowns on youtube like the studiobinder vids. I did used to write but only as a hobby, I never got to publish anything. I studied screenwriting which helped me develop the story for my comic, I recommend starting with save the cat for the easiest introduction to the basics & how to make stuff that appeals to a broad audience.

The problem is that everyone thats a mere reader treats art like it just spontaneously appears out of the fucking ether with absolutely zero effort. Sure they know artists exist, and they know that artists have to sit down and "draw", but thats where their understanding stops. Everyone is sooooooooooo insanely good at art, its all so easy to make, so when they see things that aren't fully rendered and colored, etc., they get angry. The story and the art are so easy to make, they reason, it takes no effort! How dare you want them to read something that in their eyes is subpar?

This is the mindset you are going up against. Zero understanding, all demands.

In another context I would say something along the lines of "that's how market works you baby" but slop happening actually unearthed the deep root of that same problem, that generally people don't see art as something where the guy behind is integral part of what they're looking at or get captivated enough to think at least five minutes aboutit, but pretty much as an ad that catches your attention superficially for three seconds, and if goes beyond that is simply due to bullseye pandering or meta engagement to the author's socials or portrayed persona instead of what they're reading

Export as PNG/JPG, then select resolution and file size. If you're making a scroll comic there's actually an inbuilt function to cut the scroll up into 1280x800 "pages" for Webtoons. For one chapter? You know you also have to draw this, right? That's enough content for a graphic novel. Have you finished a comic project yet? For a first story I'd recommend a one-shot to get accustomed to the medium. Writing really short comics is hard, but with around 20 pages you can tell a lot.
Regarding your script itself, I've read the first couple of pages and your writing is actually good. Unfortunately you still lost my interest pretty quickly. Why's that? There are four (!) beginnings back to back. I get the prologue, showcasing the tone of the story. But then we have an unrelated scene with just imagery and narration, then the boy waking up, before we finally move on to the mafiosi. I strongly feel like you should just skip the dream sequence altogether. I suspect it's going to be multiple points of view characters and the stuff will be relevant later, but it makes getting into the story a slog. It's set-up after set-up with little to no payoff and seeing the sheer length of your whole script I think you'd do good to focus and trim the story down. Take a scene to establish your setting and tone, and another one to introduce your characters and the conflict. I get you want to write the Sopranos, but think about the medium. I'd say deliver on your premise and focus on the mafia first. In late, out early. Cut the fat, make it snappy and kill your darlings.
Feel free to dismiss my critique, a lot of it is more an estimated guess based on what I read so far. I will not read a novel worth of script for a stranger on the internet, especially if it keeps that sort of slow pacing.

Drawing detailed character sheets for every single character is a beginners trap. You don't even need to make em for mains, it just helps some people and also plenty of people like making those things. But honestly as long as you're skilled enough it's just a waste of time for personal use. Animators use settei because there's so many people drawing the project it's more imperative to try to stay on model.

yeah ive been feeling this. so the run down of the first chapter is this:

The story begins with Roberto, a skilled sorcerer and ex mafioso, breaking into the citadel and stealing a valuable book, setting off a chain of events that reverberates throughout the mafia families.

Don Luciano, the head of one of the most powerful families and the Godfather, sees an opportunity for Tony, one of his trusted members, to regain respect and status by confronting Roberto.

However, Tony's allegiance is divided as he grapples with his duty to his family and his desire to protect his wife, Alessia, and their son, Marco.

Meanwhile, tensions escalate between the mafia families when Carmela, the daughter of a boss, Don Armani, meets a tragic end by mysterious men, igniting Armani's thirst for revenge and further destabilizing the fragile balance of power.

Armani sets a meeting with the 5 families. They figure out it was the Albanians who did the hit, and they also come to a conclusion that someone inside the 5 families talked and gave the Albanians information.

Once the plans are set, they prepare for attack.

In the end of the chapter, it is revealed that one of the bosses, Don Profaci, was the rat who was working with the Albanians.

As it concludes, we have multiple plot lines that set up later events and have consequences.

Multiple characters with different POV points throughout the story.

And in my opinion, pretty interesting. A balance between mafia, and magic. Not too much on one side where is foreshadow the other.

actually, it starts off like this

tony's crew set operation A in motion, as they eliminate a crew of albanians guarding an outpost.

after the job is done, clemenza, one of the soldiers on the job, calls tony and tells him that operation A is done.

tony hangs up and call Don Luciano, and tells him that the hit was successful, and operation A has started.

We cut to Don Profaci (the rat) trying to light a cigarette, but is interupted when one of the albanian men he gave information to before, holds a wand to his throat and accuses profaci of playing double agent.

profaci denies, and says it wasnt his men.

the albanian man says it doesnt matter anyways, the boss is angry and wants to talk.

they arrive at the boss headquarters. their boss is called 'Shefi' (boss in albanian)

the shefi is shown to be charismatic, and very brutal, as he crushes one of his mens head with his bare hands for working with the feds.

the albanian man leads profaci inside the room.

profaci, nervous, asks Shefi (boss) what he wanted to speak about.

the shefi gets up out of his seat, towering over him, and tells Profaci to take a walk with him. then we will talk.

thats all i have for chapter 2 for now.

I actually read through the first chapter, and I have some thoughts.

1. The art is pretty good. I like the style.

2. You clearly have passion, which is rare nowadays.

But, I have some critiques.

The paneling is very strange. When I'm reading the dialogue, it get confusing when speechbubbles aren't in the correct order.

Also, the imagery is very flat. There are little to no backgrounds in every shot, only a weird Clip Studio gradient. You might want to start using 3d models for backgrounds.

There are plenty of school 3d models that a free on the assartistic.

If you want to change them into line art, simply mastering the background, then click filter up on top, then click artisitc.

One more thing. The story itself got me intrigued. It made me curious why that guy gave him pepper spray and why the school was so bad. But then when it's just revealed to be a fighting degenerate school with little to no depth, it lost me.

I'm not telling you to change your story, (as you've already got a lot of chapters done), but it's just something I found weird.

I have the first chapter of my comic formatted for phone scroll webtoon format and part of volume 3 of the comic formatted for scroll as well, but everything in between I just posted as regular comic style pages, some of which are hard to read on webtoon. Do you think it's worth taking the time to reformat the entire thing? It would be about 500 pages. Originally I was planning to do this, but I think it will take way too much time that I'd be better off spending making new comics. The comic is in black and white and I don't think the webtoon algorithm or staff will feature it even if I did spend time reformatting the whole thing for webtoon. My instincts are telling me I'm better off moving on and spending time making new comics instead.

>> No.7102532

I was wondering how much of an issue slowness is for a wholesome manga. when I started I didn't expect for the "big opening punchline" money shot to be 35 pages.

It's a one-shot, its my first time doing anything involving writing and anything related to comics (although I have done a single page layout once before for fun that was highly criticized) and I am mostly just planning to have fun with it, but I am having a hard time placing a "catch".
It was recommended and almost mandatory that the first page has to be well illustrated to set the tone and the first turnover to have a good hook/catch.

Should I just skip the introductory stuff and skip forward and perhaps rely on a flashback-esque pacing right after?
Like I move the money shots to page 1/2 and then essentially rewind time to how it happened?
I feel like it's a bit cheap though

First off, I haven't read your entire comic because it's very long, but I admire your dedication to working on the same project for so many years. I only know what I've seen on /hyw/, and I've been there for a year or so.

First of all, I haven't seen many black and white comics become original. I know Moon You and Miss Abbott and the Doctor, and the former is korean, so I think it plays by different rules than the rest of us mortals, and the latter is a romance, so it has a much broader target audience than yours; also both comics are exceptions.
The lack of color doesn't make any comic better or worse, but the average webtoon reader really takes color as a given, so you're playing at disadvantage.

Furthermore, while there are webtoons that have a moderate amount of fanservice, yours sometimes goes overboard with explicit content. For instance, that beach episode crosses the line of what Webtoon would consider acceptable. I'm not sure if there are any similar scenes in other parts of the comic, but if there are, you would not only have to adapt the format but also censor them..

Potential readers also might get turned off by the artstyle of the first episodes, I've heard that a lot of people get mad when the artstyle of the webtoon doesn't match with the thumbnail style.

I think reformatting would bring some readers, but I think webtoon won't help you much. I'm sorry if I sound like a dick right now, but I think you should just move on.

I might make a few more mini comics, but then it's wrapped up. When I continue the series I'll do it as a sequel that works on it's own. I want to call it Aeon Sophia. don't think any of these classify as niche unless you go super specific with the details of the series. it's all demons or zombies which have been popular since like... the epic of gilgamesh. she's talking specifically about webtoons which is mainly romance in the west, but that's only because line webtoon is something like 70% girls under 17 who only use it when they get bored of AO3.
most ideas have broad appeal anyway so it's honestly not worth bringing up until you get really into the weeds. webtoon prioritizes romance usually but they really fucking hate their western side being the horny teenage girl website so they've been trying to bring on more shounen (and other "boy" genre) readers recently.

Nta but the call to action contest wasn't that long ago

>> No.7106466

>>7106122
yeah not only the call to action but also the fact that the biggest series currently (lore olympus) is coming to an end but they're dragging it along while trying to find a replacement. i think it's looking like they're setting up down to earth since it's a similar brooding guy peppy girl romance setup, but the call to action would have ideally brought on a lot more series that would have then been able to become originals.

it seems like it was planned really shittily though since the winner of the call to action isn't active anywhere online and hasn't posted any progress updates aside from a vague reply in august last year on their twitter, and all the top comments on the actual winner announcement are saying it was rigged and unfair (https://www.webtoons.com/en/tiptoon/webtoon-now/call-to-action-winner-announcement/viewer?title_no=2025&episode_no=217)) so i think webtoon might be a bit apprehensive to go forward with another contest like this.

also it just makes sense from a business point of view. lore olympus is by far the biggest western webtoon, but even its 1 billion view count is nothing compared to the 10-11 billion naver webtoon has with solo leveling and lookism. most webtoons are weeb slop and a supermajority of weebs prefer action over anything else.

I'm kind of interested in starting one of these, but I feel like the backgrounds are a massive hurdle. It's either disgusting looking 3D backgrounds that aren't even painted over, or very simple backgrounds that are usually very zoomed in on the characters.

Seems to be an often overlooked factor

>> No.7108002

The only hurdle is learning perspective. Once you know it it's actually easy, the time consuming part is coloring. But you can easily get away with using 3d since the webtoon audience is already used to it.

If you know the main locations and camera angles you'll be using, you can just make the backgrounds in bulk. If you use a vector brush then that also lets you change the scale of the drawings as needed.
3D assets also don't always have to be disgusting or obvious as long as they're used sparingly or if you trace over them in a more natural style akin to your art, Webtoon originals and similar mass-produced alternatives just don't have the time to do that, and can't make backgrounds in bulk because of the possibility of editor meddling and/or big story changes midway through the series. Also yeah learn basic perspective it really doesn't take too much time.

I think I'm a horrible role model. If I have those 1k subs, it's because Webtoon featured me for some weeks. I don't know if it was sheer luck or if someone at Webtoon really liked my work, but that's why I can't recommend anything specific to you. To this day, I have no idea what I did right or what I did wrong. I'm just trying to improve and make my comic the best it can be.

The only thing I can recommend is that you try to be consistent with your updates, because that's the only thing I ever did.

this anon >>7109416 raises a perspective i've never heard of, so maybe consider that pov more since i'm just going off of what i've seen and not personal experience.
that being said, all the videos webtoons (themselves and their creators) releases on the matter say to upload at least every other week, but ideally weekly. you could try splitting up one (for example) 20 page chapter into four 5 page chapters to go weekly, but the tradeoff is that people don't get to read the story with the pacing you intended when writing it. a lot of canvas readers get that you aren't doing it professionally though so they don't care too much from what i've seen, and creators can still get far as long as the uploads are consistent.

I'm thinking about using it for making backgrounds mostly, my computer is pretty old (like 10 years old, ancient Macfag) so I'd like to try something like Sketchup just because it seems lightweight compared to other 3D software. if you want to download it, open it in tachiyomi (you do have tachiyomi, right?) and tap and hold the screen. to make longer panels, then just multiply the vertical height of the canvas by typing "*2" in the "Height" field on whatever canvas resizer your drawing software uses to multiply the height double, or "*3" to triple, etc.

and there's no real rule on how long each panel should be from each other, but official webtoons guidelines say you should space each panel and word balloon so that it takes up the entire screen. i think that's fucking stupid and wouldn't go nearly that long, but that's something to keep in mind if you're looking to become an original.
