im always afraid of drawing/painting backgrounds behind my characters (even after a bunch of simplified landscapes for that exact purpose) i was feel like any bg i makes the drawing worse and more confusing and it is better to go with a coloured square in back.

How do I get good at drawing? I'm left handed, have perpetually shaky hands, ADHD, autism and a learning disability. 24.
I've wanted to get good at art since I was a teen but I've lacked the motivations, resources and teachings to get started.
I don't know
>which brush size to use
>optimal size to draw digitally
>good pressure curve to start out with
>how to find a comfortable pressure curve
>how to undo bad habits like drawing stiff figures
>how to fix shitty lines you're too used to drawing
>how to get better when you're experienced but /beg/
I legitimately don't even know how to do sketch lines. My coordination is so fucked thanks to my autism, I can barely even sketch without even the most basic lines fucking up. I can't visually imagine stuff in my head when I'm actually drawing, and my ADHD just wants me to finish as soon as possible. I can barely decide on something as basic as what model to use when trying to sketch a head.

Hi, shaky hands adhd and touch o' tism too, started learning how to draw at 18 and was making good money off it through comms a few years later. Just keep drawing with purpose and learn what works best for you.
>brush size anywhere from 15 for details to 100 for sketching.
>3000 x 4000 pixel canvas. Sometimes smaller when I'm sketching (thumbnail) cause its forgiving on mistakes.
>you can change pen pressure on tablet, csp, and the brush itself, so this is super subjective. I prefer a super light touch
>keep screwing around until it feels right. i still mess with mine on a brush by brush basis depending on what I'm trying to accomplish
>stiff figures are gunna be the bane of your existence for a looooong time.
gesture drawings wont help you as a beginner, so focus on understanding how the body fits together and what different body parts look like at different angles. dont think about copying exactly what you see; rather, the feeling of it. things that are anatomically correct are rarely as interesting to look at as things that are expressive - you still need to know how the body fits together though. depending on style, you can favour a curvier or more angular way of depicting the figure. experiment!
>keep trying new brushes, experiment, screw around. this will come naturally as you build hand dexterity. try to be confident with your lines but dont be afraid to slow down and carve things out when you need to
>draw because you like the process. you'll be a beginner for a long time if you dont push yourself to try new things or dont find it rewarding
>free tip: use references. no one knows what a shrimp looks like from memory unless they're staring at shrimp all day
>otherfreetip: people say material doesn't matter; it does. i fucking suck at traditional art, tablet is fine, but display tablets are absolute goat

Back to studying after several years of "just drawing".
Tried using Tom Fox's easiest head mannequins (the few ones at the start of the book), but I feel they're not enough and don't translate properly what I see when I look at a head. Improvised my own mannequin from what I could see and depict, and tomorrow I'll see if I'm pro enough to use the asaro head as one.

Top left doodle is a result of trying the Feng Zhu ultrasecret technique of setting a grey brush to 30% opacity to "simulate markers" and quickly render sketches. Pretty cool.

Okay, I know the "am I too old" and "how long will it take me to get good" question is asked fucking ad nauseum here but I would like to inquire anyway.

So, I've been drawing for a long time, but I've never been consistent. I have ADD and depression (like actual clinical depression because of childhood abuse) so it's hard for me to focus and get tasks done. I've loved drawing and making comics since I was a kid, always took art class and shit, but I wouldn't say I "seriously" started drawing until 2016 during my senior year of highschool. But I've never been super consistent with my learning. There are times where I would grind a fuck ton or draw until my hand hurt, and then periods where I would go months without drawing at all. I've done studies, I've taken art classes and even got an art minor. I'm 26 now and I wouldn't say I've made significant improvement. I drew A LOT during 2019-early 2021, then I kind of tapered off a lot to where I only drew on occasion. I drew pic related back in 2020 I think, may have been 2020. I've posted a lot of my work here.

But to get to the point I want to ask is I don't really know my skill level or how long it would take me to get competent at drawing from where I'm at. The amount of time I've been drawing doesn't seem like a good indicator. I feel like I'm at square one, like I'm basically starting at 26 because I never took the time to get good and was never consistent. I feel like I let myself get too old to really master this skill. I'm not sure how I passed my art classes. I posted some of my work the other day and people referred to it as "baby steps" and I get they were trying to encourage me but I feel like I've been at "baby steps" for years now and I'll never be able to run. I don't know if I'm lacking talent, discipline, or both.

nta but why? wouldnt drawing a ton of finished rendered pieces be way more efficient because then you're practicing everything; sketching, line art, rendering. instead of just sketch, sketch, sketch until you feel satisfied enough to move up. plus posting finished pieces gets the guy crit on more than just his basic foundation drawing, but also his rendering skills so everything is being improved at once.

>>7084730 take this with a grain of salt - im also /beg/

i think an issue with this is that you're trying to focus on too much as a /beg/ - try just getting the basic pose down first, and then work on adding details after

I can see the construction underneath - but I don't think this image serves well as a reference, because it's too "busy" and obscures the core form/pose.

try looking up actual human photo references for this pose, and practicing that.

some other things I think might help are

- setting up a horizon line/floor to act as a "grounding point" for the whole image. Kai'sa's feet in your drawing aren't aligned, whereas the original image has the feet adjacent to each other

- the hair in the original can be neatly sectioned into different "tentacles" but your drawing has a jumble of lines to vaguely approximate the same overall shape. Try and identify the smaller shapes the original artist used to create the hair.

- Kai'sa's face in your image is too vertical - her face in the original is tilted, but your drawing sort of drags her face down to a normal angle. Try rotating the reference next time so that it isn't tilted, and try drawing so that you are drawing a normal perspective.

Here’s an example of what I mean regarding learning the structure of the pose before moving to more detail. Like I said, I’m also a /beg/, so my art is probably not very convincing.

I try to break down the pose, and then recreate it separately. I can tell if I’ve done a good job simply overlaying my construction over the original.

I’ll work on trying to add detail later, I just wanted to try and better convey what I meant.

Keep at it man!

I found that when I was doing the mannequinization of the figure, if I draw over the actual figure with the cylinders and stuff, I was able to more closely follow the lines and details of the figure when drawing the actual figure over the mannequin

Is this something I should move away from? I feel like it's not quite tracing, but drawing the shapes over the photo feels kind of like tracing.

It's basically tracing in the sense that you're barely training your observation skills, if at all

Sounds okay to me but I do it the other way around, construct from observation then if it looks slightly fucked (common) check by doing it over the image afterwards and comparing. Good morning /beg/, I've decided I'm going to start posting here more often to hold myself accountable.

I've been grinding fundies to the best of my ability because I got sick of polishing turds only to get praised by naive people, the impostor syndrome was too much to bear. I'm trying to unfuck my perception of form, because it's always been really 2d the moment I try to use basic shapes/planes. I always found organic a lot easier to intuit, but that's probably because there's a lot more room for error.

I keep making mistakes in subtle angle changes and proportions, which this study made really clear to me. I think I need to bridge the gap between geometry and organic shapes because that seems to be the weak link here.

I am, this is just a copy from Anatomy For Sculptors. I still can't do simple shit like run contour lines through organic shapes accurately, so I definitely consider myself /beg/ at most.

All I really have to share is more studies since I've fallen for the grindfag meme and now I feel trapped in practice before I can allow myself to draw something that could really gauge my level.

>> No.7086273

>>7086268
Well, how are you going to know what level you're actually at if you don't try? You have enough self awareness to realize you're just endlessly grinding but for some reason you're not allowing yourself to take that next step. Stop overthinking it bruv and just draw what you want that isn't a study. If your end goal is anime girls then draw anime girls. Then self critique on what parts you think you can do better. Grinding unrelated studies can only get you so far, you gotta apply it man.

>> No.7086285

>>7086273
That's true, I guess I'm just afraid. I tried to get ahead of myself and just drew what I aspired towards on and off (sometimes as rare as once or twice a month, or nothing at all) for a few years before getting my health in check and I could always feel the back of my mind screaming "you'd know how to do this if your fundies didn't suck." This is definitely just me overcompensating now that I have the energy and willpower to be consistent.

I also need to get my digital tools back but that'll take a while, and since my end goal is digital painting I can't exactly draw a level check piece right now, so I've decided to grind until then.

permabeg here. ive been learning how to crypto trade and it looks like it going to be pulling through soon. problem is ive only been able to draw for like 10 hours tops in the past few months and it will probably be this way for as long as the bullrun lasts. i can feel the soul leaking as i become an emotionless trading machine. is there anyway to recover from this? i offer a ref pic of a cute coyote in evening/overcast lighting. i can post more too.

This is one of the few things I can give correct advice as a beg. First, draw the bar without hatching. The reason you failed is because you thought you could execute it in one run. You have to draw in layers (e.g.: darkest area are multiple layers, lightest is one), and the most important thing, is you have to draw with a very light touch. You should not be able to see where lines begin and end, it should be a smooth transition. Don't worry, I had a similar result and once it clicked I did it perfectly. Also ,the 30 minutes for the exercise is no joke, it's not hard if you know what you're doing, but you have to be careful.

I try to separate the two, like when I go out just draw what I see. But I will say this, I can make an okay drawing from life if the subject is easier, but my life drawing landscapes are dogshit, it's very very complex for me.
