I drew a goblin. I tried an exercise where I sit down, use no references, and draw something in under 60 minutes just from imagination. I am very happy with what I got done. I still have a long way to go and a lot more to improve but I overcame the one thing that kind of blocked me from wanting to draw and that was how slow my workflow and drawing was.

So I want to ask if anyone has any references or videos on any artists' drawing/painting process who have a fast workflow. I'm looking for where they start with a completely empty canvas or space and describe or show their thoughts and drawing process. I have been watching people like Ryan Benjamin, Bob Ross, Glen Kean's masterclass, and a bit of the automatic drawing technique. The few people I listed have really helped me noticeably improve the past week by copying and learning some of their work, techniques, and thought process. My workflow is more confident and roughly 2 to 3 times faster than it was before. I have found more references besides the one I listed but I am having trouble finding more that articulate or convey their process as well as the ones I listed. I don't know if this is the thread to ask this but any help would be appreciated.

It looks pretty nice anon, very good for no reference. From what I've seen though, the kind of workflows you're describing only work that way because the artists have spent a long time drawing from life, and as such have internalized lots of different landscapes. It's easier for them to draw fast since they already have a pretty detailed idea of their final piece. Balance drawing both from life and from imagination, as well as the studies of other artists you're doing now, and you'll get faster in no time. If you want another artist, I'd recommend James Gurney. Lots of informational videos as well as videos of his process.

Hold the fuck up, I agree with you on the eyes, mouth and how flat the band looks, but the TORSO is a symbol? Can you explain how it is? No offense but you seem to NOT be explain WHY something is a symbol and are just throwing it around without yourself even realising it, almost sounds like you are assuming that if something looks slightly off that makes it a "symbol". Hell I could even buy the hand being a "symbol" but that clearly doesn't help at all.

>>7069729
It's when you are drawing something that looks "flat" with no dimension or depth or any sense of form. What you think you are seeing rather than what you are actually seeing.

It's very difficult to draw lips for me I do attempt to give them a sense of depth/form but it's very difficult.

>> No.7069774

>>7069767
fundies is style, and style is fundies. They're the same thing, really. Don't believe the atelier fag's lies that style is something different from fundamentals.

It's all shape and visual library, at the end of the day. Either you can draw those shapes accurately, or not.

>hand
Yes it's symbol drawing, her right hand is even the wrong way around
>torso
Same issue as with the hands, it lacks anatomy, perspective and form. To me it just looks like guesswork to me that is symbol drawing, maybe you would define it in a different way. Doesn't really matter.

>> No.7069791

>>7069781
>looks like guesswork to me that is symbol drawing

...that's just shoddy anatomy then, not symbol. Your definition is clearly "If it looks wrong, it's symbol".

Can you explain WHY the torso lacks Anatomy, Perspective (?) and form?

Also regarding her right hand, it's twisted around hence why the thumb is on the right side. Is it because due to the lack of detail it looks like it's the wrong way around? I actually do see that issue.

But for real, don't sum up all issues as "symbol", because that's VERY confusing and I'm actually here to get critiques so I can improve and learn from her (especially when I do some final tweaks to her tomorrow), just saying "Oh, that's symbol (wrong, bad etc.)" is not helpful.

Can't you like, since I assume you are good at drawing, red line it so I know what I need to do? Would be very helpful.

Okay I'll respond one last time
>right hand
The right hand can't twist that way with the backside of the hand towards the viewer the thumb will be on the opposite side
>torso
The left side of her torso is closer to the viewer but the right side appears bigger. Her boobs are misaligned with the perspective of her torso. Her head is too far back and to the left(fixed by shrinking her rightside and pushing the head forwards in perspective a bit) she has no neck, no clavicle, no visible form of muscles there are so many more issues. Idk what you want anon it's a mess and to me it's symbol drawing. But whatever keep on arguing about how your shit drawing isn't shit. Maybe channel that energy into improving instead unless that is a lost cause like this discussion is.

No one can draw from their head at first unless they are a prodigy or autistic. References are good, and even great artists use them. As you get better at drawing from memory, you can then create your own ideas from imagination, but you'll have the skill to confidently execute them. I drew a lot of dogs and scissors from memory before I drew this thing. It's not great, but it's a start.

The Proko figure drawing guide gave good advice on breaking things up into shapes

However I find the heads of more unusual creatures a bit hard to break into shapes. For the entelodont I kind of just did a bunch of straight lines that sort of followed the contours of it's head, the bear I tried to make into cylinders, spheres, or other stuff but it looked weird.

How do I improve the coloring and lineart?

I don't really know what tools to use or what process to follow to start drawings in photoshop

>> No.7070311

I’ve been studying figure drawing for a while, but I’ve got to wondering: is it better to focus all my efforts and time on just figure drawing, or should I distribute my time and effort among various different things like studying clothes, portraits, and landscapes?
On one hand, the former will lead to faster improvement, though I risk burning out, whereas the latter leads to more variety (and fun, maybe), but will slow my improvement and risks making me into someone who does a lot but is shit at everything.
I’ve been doing figures for maybe 6 months now, probably a bit more. All I ever do is follow Vilppu lectures and practice poses. I’m not interested in making proper drawings because I don’t feel I have a “full toolbox” so to speak. I plan on working on figures until I’m done with all the lectures and am happy with their quality, then moving on to portraits so I can learn to draw faces. Then go clothes, yada yada. I have a feeling this is too inefficient of a progression, though. With this plan, it’ll take me years until I can actually do anything. Any suggestions or advice?

I did another exercise from keys to drawing after 1-2 months break (of "just draw"). I'm not enjoying building up values with a pencil and I might even be doing it wrong because it doesn't look appealing.

Also, I'm not sure how I got some really weird smudges on my paper. The sphere (orange) I mostly did with HB pencil only and it looks better than the other two shapes I did with 2B, as that makes the slight texture of the paper too visible.

I think I pretty much nailed the proportions though. Maybe next time I will do it with black paint or ink instead with a brush (after sketching in the shapes).

Been practicing figure drawing for about a month and a half with Brent Eviston, this time i'm practicing on how to connect the legs to the torso, these drawings are my recent ones.
I plan on drawing more complex and dynamic poses in the future.

I think i've gone too long without any criticism, so any bit of it would be helpful, thanks in advance.

I love character design, so I would mostly want to do that, which is why I'm learning figure drawing. I would also like to do landscapes. My favorite kind of art is romanticism, my favorite artist being Rembrandt, and others being John William Waterhouse (who I don't believe was romantic) and Caspar David Friedrich. I don't necessarily want my art to look exactly like theirs, though. I want to find my own style and atmosphere, but I'm not that far along yet.

You're drawing what you think you know about hands and not what you're looking at. Slow down and take your time. First off the exercise is to hold your hand up with the fingers pointing directly at you so it's completely unusual and you can't fail back on your assumptions about hands. Take your time and draw slowly spending 90% of the time looking at your hand and not your drawing. Stop and think about what you're drawing. Did you just draw that angle right? Is the index finger the correct size compared to the thumb? Are you really seeing that much of the fingernail?

Also homie unless you want to make a living out of art you shouldn't worry about ai. Hopefully you didn't put all your eggs in the art basket (like me I want to fucking kill myself).
Get a normal job draw on your free time. Art is fun and one of the greatest things humans can do. Just enjoy your journey keep at it have fun and let it rip. Don't rob yourself of one of life's greatest pleasure just because some sillicon valley fags and indians are trying everything in their power to strip us of our humanity. Will things get worse now that Ai is getting bigger and bigger? Who knows? But no machine will take your ability to draw.

I understand how to draw boxes/box-like shapes on a grid (or at least I think I do. I use a ruler + trad to do 2-pt perspective drills), but once I try to apply it to an actual sketch/environment my drawing starts to look messed up.

IDK why there's such a disconnect but maybe the answer is just failing more to build up to actually doing it right.

You're not actually applying 2 point in your drawing. All green lines and red lines should be converging to their respective point. Instead of trying to draw that sun shade cover as is, turn it into a large box first. THEN put the complicated shape inside of said box so the perspective is right. No shame in using the line tool to map it out first then freehanding over the whole thing, try it.

If it's not clicking just move on to the next exercise. If you've done all the exercises and none of them clicked start over again. If you don't wanna do that then just start copying literally anything. Anything in real life, any photo, picture, any drawing you like. Focus, measure, try to get it right to the best of your abilities. Spend as much or as little time on a piece as you want, just try to catch mistakes as you make them and correct them.
If you're dissatisfied with a drawing and you can't fix it or can't see where the issue lies, just abandon it and start something else. Or post it here if you want advice. Eventually you'll pick up on the fundies naturally, you just have to actually put in the effort each time and not draw brainlessly.

Look at the examples, recreate the pose LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO, pointing the fingers at you, and draw WHAT YOU SEE DIRECTLY, STOP DRAWING NOODLES FOR FINGERS AND A RECTANGLE FOR THE PALM BECAUSE THAT'S HOW YOU DREW THEM AS A KID.
And don't give up again after one attempt, the book's not to blame for your shortcomings.

small fingers, the palm fingers ratio is about 1:1 +-0.2 should fit the face comfortably.

The face is flat, paraphrasing Steve Houston: the middle third of the face is where most of the work should be focused, as it contains the eyes (main focal point), the nose (one of the best 3d descriptors) and the ears (helps defining the head orientation to the viewer),

you don't, its an exercise not a finish piece, first observe your subject think about what should be a line and what not, are there darker lines than others? can I do the same with just straight lines?, etc thats what drawing is basically observing -> thinking -> abstracting -> executing.

>AND HOW THE FUCK IS ALL OF THIS SUPPOSED TO HELP ME DRAW A FUCKING BOX
This won't help you to draw a box you draw boxes to get better at drawing boxes, but this will make you more sensible for example think of the fingernails as a single box face.

>>7071257
and this is not the purpose of the exercise, but nice fingernails.

So why did an anon recommend me this when they saw my shit ass boxes? They said "Oh this will help with lines and perspective" but all it's doing is pissing me off.

Oh my bad, I didn't see the original exercises, but still breaking things down into shape and thinking of it as 3d can help you draw anything.

why would I know? don't like it? grow up and move on.
keys and right are generalist books that try to teach the basic lingo and thought processes so you can understand better more specialized books.

If you want to draw boxes learn about the basic 1, 2 and 3 vp perspective and then draw boxes all the edges like a wireframe multiple time from multiple views.

>>7071281
not saying is not useful it is, but the exercise is blind drawing (I think) so is not feasible for him at the moment.

The point was to put you in good starting point for drawing in general. There are many ways to do that, ktd is just one of them that was recommended. But if you're being heavy filtered by boxes and the first lesson I don't what to tell you.

I think you should just copy anime or something you like until you get a little more confidence. You're just frustrating yourself right now.

I think you're suffering from wanting to keep all the detail in that you drew, when the lighting you're trying to do would eliminate almost all of it. I'd suggest changing the idea.

I honestly could give less of a shit about the boxes. The only reason why I want to draw boxes is to learn perspective, you know something simple. But no apparently I gotta learn a hundred other things before that.
>>7071296
I'm getting filtered because it's expecting something advance from.a fucking beginner. Seriously how is this a good starting point? I thought starter stuff was supposed to be boxes and stuff, not fucking hands and copying expert artists.

alright anons I need your advice I recently bought keys to drawing by bert Dodson and how to draw by Scott.

I'm currently in drawabox lesson 3 and started drawing consistently like 1 week ago and I've noticed I've been improving despite my drawings coming out bad sometimes.

should I complete lesson 3 and then quit drawabox and copy what those books tell me what to do (not actually copying rather studying)

or should I keep going?

I feel more comfortable with completing lesson 3 first than quitting all of a sudden but I'm not really good when it comes to decisions. What do you guys think?

I've seen all your attempts today and with the boxes the other day.
I'm gonna be the one to break this to you anon, but you're ngmi. Drawing isn't for you. Find another hobby that clicks, because this is not the one.

can you not draw aesthetically ? it's like your make your drawings always so ugly and lumpy on purpose. even in your previous post the feet you drew were the ugliest I've ever seen. and I don't mean technically I've seen way worse skill wise i mean aesthetically. you really are gross.

and she's missing her abdomen (should be more space between the chest and pelvis)
and I think you should show less of face on her left side to indicate better perspective

So I drew these today, and for some reason my hand felt a bit unsteady compared to before, I am not sure why my lines/curves still look a bit neater but I struggled to feel comfortable while drawing today.

Do I just need to rest my hand? Also do my cubes look overly wonky? I feel they look nicer than ones I could draw a few months back but I dunno, I can't always tell.

I want to join some online workshops but I'm reading that picrel (not my work) should take 1-2 minutes each and it takes me ages to do anything. how the fuck do I become quicker at drawing? do I need certain prerequisites to start learning anatomy? I'm doing figure drawing courses and they're saying learning anatomy helps speed things up, but then I'm too slow for the anatomy stuff?
