I feel like every time I do more than one layer of lineart, it amounts to me tracing. I have a very difficult time building up lineart in successive layers - I understand the notion that you're not tracing and are instead re-drawing, redesigning and refining and drawing around the form - but I haven't had much success doing so. I have since resorted to just using a single layer for lineart and refining as needed. I'm not tracing because it looks like garbage no matter what I do if I ever even get close to tracing.

because tracing teaches you jack shit about understanding shapes, analysing depth and weight of what you see before you start drawing on the paper. tracing is a complete deception to beginners. you merely trace lines and of course the result will be kinda suprising: why? because you are fucking cheating.

what's bad about tracing is that it shows. of you are a /beg/ there is going to be this absolutely abysmal, unholy mix of correct proportions, but obvious mistakes in the line work, bad outlines, ugly structures and a complete lack of flow in the surfaces (say like, how you would give a leg in OP pic the right curveture)

>picrel
i never resort to tracing. these are drawn from photos, but with my clipboard in my lap and the screen in front of me. same goes for nude and portrait drawing. no grid, no tracing.

TL;DR
>git gewd and stop thinking about tracing.

I work in programming exactly to have variety and mental stimulation in what I do, so in my case you would be switching something you do for entertainment in your free time to apathy and boredom.
It's like a double suicide unless you're getting money from it, then it's just a regular suicide.

Recommend dropping tracing (this is a bait thread, no one here actually believes tracing is good) and picking up some art books such as keys to drawing, fun with a pencil, art and science of drawing etc whichever suits you, you can find them in the artbook thread or /beg/'s OP.

Tracing has its fair share and middle ground of use, but is not a sustainable source of learning. If you want to break a confusing arrangement down then thats fine. Even then however, you still must use it sparingly lest you stagnate due to using tracing as a form of quick self-gratification.

To create art, you must create, not trace. Because in the end, anatomy errors and lack of line confidence are still extremely prominent when you never took the time to actually learn them >>7067860, even when tracing from other artists works.
