The point wasn't the landscape. He was making a botanical study of a milkweed plant while incorporating elements of the natural landscape around it rather than just painting it against a plain background as botanical studies are usually done. By painting a rough estimation of the landscape and putting it behind the milkweed plant, he can isolate his foreground subject and control the composition. From there, it's just a matter of painting what he sees right in front of him.
