Finished. As you can see I am just throwing shit at it and hoping something sticks.
I have immense respect for renderfags now.
Uhh I don't know if it is too much to ask for but I accept any citique. I want to stop being mediocre.
I tried to do the sofa in a single layer just painting and I liked how it turned out even if the perspective is turbo fucked and the painting was half-assed.

I posted this one already but...

Guys I need help with Torso construction. Can someone give me a good way of how to construct a torso because I am overwhelmed by how many ways you can do it.

And yeah I did do this one decently considering my skill level, but I swear I can NEVER remember exactly how I did it. Maybe it's ADHD or just simply not practicing enough...probably the latter as I can easily construct heads now but torsos are just weird to me.

(that being said, I am pleased but not satisfied with my progress, just really need to tackle torsos)

Starting a new project. I'm going to do masters studies on Kentaro Miura while learning Japanese. I just bought the entire series (just about) in Japanese and I'm going to copy panels as best I can in a short time while listing out the kanji I don't know (nearly all of them) and then looking them up. Comics, manga, really any art that isn't completely painterly. A line drawing has already solved the problem of simplifying a real object and translating it into 2 dimensions. It trains very basic observational skills like proportions, comparative measuring, seeing angles, using negative shape, etc. This is how most artists have learned to draw, historically, along with life drawing. It just so happens that copying from your favorite artists tends to be more fun than drawing a bowl of fruit or a striped piece of cloth draped over a chair (you should do these things too).

Practice the first one. When you get to the point where you can reproduce a line drawing very well without breaking a sweat, change gears immediately and go for the second approach. The goal is to get to the point where your hand and eye no longer impede you from doing the real heavy lifting in drawing, which is the conceptual stuff.

Well, >>7049613 >>7049621 are bang on. I think Hampton’s explanation of rhythm and active vs passive is great, and I think Vilppu is just excellent overall for learning the figure.

I also like the way that Steve Huston talks about the interplay between gesture and structure and that the concept of gesture and be broken down as the long-axis curve that both flows through and connects the parts of the body.

I think that lovelifedrawing on YouTube has some great simple ideas around gesture. The gesture is about getting the totality of the spirit of the pose. “What’s the minimum information I need to show the attitude and pose and gesture that this person is making?” There’s a lot of insight to be found by doing the little exercise where you make a flour sack emote. Think of the magic carpet in Aladdin. That’s one aspect of it. A great way of thinking about it is that gesture is to drawing what armature is to sculpting. It should be useful, the starting off point to then build the structure on top of. (Gesture can also be structural/construction, btw. Like drawing a twisting bean to show the gesture of the torso, or two boxes to show the gesture of the chest and pelvis, etc.) There’s all different ways of doing it, all different teachers, and the only thing that matters is that the way you do it works for you.

unironically stop drawing anime for a while and do realistic people
you're committing to anime-isms that make your drawing look odd
yknow like the "no lower eyelashe" "no defined lip placement" "no noses anywhere" "wonky jawline" "wierdly detailed iris" "wierd almost helmet like hair" "just thin lines in place of an actual eyebrow" "impossible giraffe neck syndrome" etc etc
these anime-ism were developed by skilled artists with good fundies to save time in the animation/manga drawing process
but when a newbie with no fundies applies them sloppily they get the uncanny valley effect
look i get it we all get into art using anime as a gateway drug to get us on board the gravy train but you will someday (if u continue the path of the artist in earnest) will start noticing the anime-isms and they will no longer appear cute to your now forever enhanced and superior perception
i get it we all love anime waifus as a surrogate for our lack of female contact at a young age but anime tends to distort the adolescent mind's perception of "attractive" features albeit indirectly (also why and how furries/bronies happened)
so the sooner you get out of the anime coomer phase of your life and embrace drawing for the artform it truly is the sooner you will see mega gains

also you've got a good grasp of applyig color even if your lineart itself is beyond wonky
now go draw something non anime like a self potrait or something (ps not everything has to be a finished rendered piece dont hesitate to doodle)

ok so you drew a box there, but why? can you tell where the horizon line is? How are you going to draw a box in the correct perspective without knowing this? You should focus on one thing at a time. If you dont know perspective and you can't copy it will be much harder if you try to do both at the same time. Read keys to drawing for observation and perspective made easy for perspective.
You're also pressing way too hard, you shouldn't be able to see your boxes 3 pages after you've drawn them

for starters drawing is probably gonna be really boring for you if you just draw boxes. if you're beginning the best thing you can do is find something you love and draw that even if it's pervert shit or trees or self portraits or whatever. just think about topics you enjoy and draw that. once you've been drawing a while you'll start to face blocks and recognise where you're failing as an artist and THEN that's the time for drawing boxes in perspective etc.

yuming li is awesome I like his iridescence effect on his art. I think you will benefit from a hyper realistic art workflow not to replicate its result but there are many techniques that can help you get those hard edges: this video is really good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJrIo-s8WZE
also for color using the rgb slider and a read of "how to see color and paint" may be useful.

Some other anons told me I should start by sketching quick poses, like 30 seconds studies, but that's from photos and they're kind of flat from what I understood. Thanks in advance.

struggling with new techniques is always part of the process, the best advice I can give you is if you don't know how to do a certain thing PAUSE the artwork and go learn EXACTLY what ur trying to do. if in this case it's perspective don't go learning the entire process of every point of perspective, learn what you need to know to help the current project ur working on.

My crit for this piece, go read up on 3 point perspective, experiment with SIMPLE shapes first then move back to ur artwork and try to work out the kinks. You won't get it the first time just TRY.

Are there any alternatives to starting with a sphere when drawing a head? I just feel like it's inconsistent when placing proportions and I have to add/remove a good bit when sketching
Or am I overthinking things again and that's kind of par for the course?

The only alternatives I've seen are either starting with a box, circle or starting with a familiar part of the head has like the eyes.

Whenever you sketch the head your gonna have to deal with add/removing part of the sketch that just par for the course. My advice is to just find a method you are the most comfortable with and modify it to fit your needs.

Remember the human body may have consistent part, but the shape, angle, size and etc of a head can vary. Some folks have long heads or big chins, maybe the forehead is more vertical that horizontal. these are things you decide in the design.

Fair enough, it just makes some things like getting the proportion of the jaw right a pain in the ass sometimes.
Although as I start venturing into stylization I see a lot of people just do a general shape that encompasses the entire head and jaw and just carve out a face from that. Ben Eblen is a good example of that

not the other anon but how do I get better at drawing anime eyes from other angles in perspective? I always struggle to make it look decent, the eyelashes especially... I can draw front face fine but fall apart at 3/4 faces because i just can't understand how to draw the eyes in perspective. like, how do I know when to draw a bit of the nose ridge at some angles? sometimes in anime drawing with simpler designs, for 3/4 faces, the nose ridge is drawn and other times it's a dot. like I don't get it. I can't seem to find a decent tutorial on how to do it properly

I do plan to properly study the head ofc but I want to be drawing anime girls for fun properly before I get there. I finished Brent Eviston's beginner course and I'm going to do his figure and gesture one later but the head section is near the end
