Guys I need help with Torso construction. Can someone give me a good way of how to construct a torso because I am overwhelmed by how many ways you can do it.

And yeah I did do this one decently considering my skill level, but I swear I can NEVER remember exactly how I did it. Maybe it's ADHD or just simply not practicing enough...probably the latter as I can easily construct heads now but torsos are just weird to me.

I feel like I need to work on basically everything but my major points I think are line confidence and generally making the area between the ribs and pelvis is always huge.

I did the self-portrait, drawing from memory, and hand drawing from Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain.

Seeing the improvements people made in the before and after pics in the book gives me a lot of hope

Comics, manga, really any art that isn't completely painterly. A line drawing has already solved the problem of simplifying a real object and translating it into 2 dimensions. It trains very basic observational skills like proportions, comparative measuring, seeing angles, using negative shape, etc. This is how most artists have learned to draw, historically, along with life drawing. It just so happens that copying from your favorite artists tends to be more fun than drawing a bowl of fruit or a striped piece of cloth draped over a chair (you should do these things too).

Well, >>7049613 >>7049621 are bang on. I think Hampton’s explanation of rhythm and active vs passive is great, and I think Vilppu is just excellent overall for learning the figure.

I also like the way that Steve Huston talks about the interplay between gesture and structure and that the concept of gesture and be broken down as the long-axis curve that both flows through and connects the parts of the body.

I think that lovelifedrawing on YouTube has some great simple ideas around gesture. The gesture is about getting the totality of the spirit of the pose. “What’s the minimum information I need to show the attitude and pose and gesture that this person is making?” There’s a lot of insight to be found by doing the little exercise where you make a flour sack emote. Think of the magic carpet in Aladdin. That’s one aspect of it. A great way of thinking about it is that gesture is to drawing what armature is to sculpting. It should be useful, the starting off point to then build the structure on top of. (Gesture can also be structural/construction, btw. Like drawing a twisting bean to show the gesture of the torso, or two boxes to show the gesture of the chest and pelvis, etc.) There’s all different ways of doing it, all different teachers, and the only thing that matters is that the way you do it works for you.

feels like you're fighting against the brushes. if you're gonna use brushes like this start the foundation with really harsh values and colours, the more colour you add it will subtract so don't worry about it being too vibrant if you want a subdued look.

I've been reconsidering my choices since yesterday I think I've been making progress, but I think i've strayed from my goal... making illustrations I like. So to correct that, I will make thumbnailing a part of my time spent holding a pen. I found J enjoyable, I'm pleased with the results.

I just started studying anatomy. Should I stop trying to study my mum and start studying solely from books instead? I can't feel the forms properly and I'm kind of old, 28. My hands are untrained and so are my eyes.

Since when is 28 old? People will be a bit hard at this point. Anatomy is also kind of advanced right now. Start with very basic still objects like shoes and vases. Look up Dorian Iten's Accuracy guide and use all the techniques he talks about until they are almost unconscious (this will take a long while of daily drawing from observation).

How do you find the will to finish something when you know you're struggling with it? I always find myself in the loop of trying to finish something the eventually hitting a point where I know I don't know enough and just drop it to go do more studies. Is it worth it to finish even though you know what you don't know?

struggling with new techniques is always part of the process, the best advice I can give you is if you don't know how to do a certain thing PAUSE the artwork and go learn EXACTLY what ur trying to do. if in this case it's perspective don't go learning the entire process of every point of perspective, learn what you need to know to help the current project ur working on.

My crit for this piece, go read up on 3 point perspective, experiment with SIMPLE shapes first then move back to ur artwork and try to work out the kinks. You won't get it the first time just TRY.

Whenever you sketch the head your gonna have to deal with add/removing part of the sketch that just par for the course. My advice is to just find a method you are the most comfortable with and modify it to fit your needs.

Remember the human body may have consistent part, but the shape, angle, size and etc of a head can vary. Some folks have long heads or big chins, maybe the forehead is more vertical that horizontal. these are things you decide in the design.

Fair enough, it just makes some things like getting the proportion of the jaw right a pain in the ass sometimes.

Would anyone here know a good book for color theory or I guess more specifically something that gets right into the meat of how to color mix to get the colors you are seeing? I am really really struggling getting a color right and its so aggravating, takes up entire time of doing a piece.

I tried the 3/4 view of a head with the lessons from the book in mind, and I found it a lot easier and liked the result a lot more.

There's still a long road but I think I'm running down the right path.
