How did Greeks and Romans paint like? Were they Renaissance-tier?

>> No.7027787

sculpting is much easier than drawing / painting. They could sculpt well, but not paint well.

Same with the Chinese. The Terracotta warriors are some of the most realistic sculptures in the world, but their drawing was very symbolic and systematized, not realistic at all.

>They could sculpt well, but not paint well
As many of the posts in this thread illustrate, this is a big misconception about Greek and Roman art.

They COULD paint very well. The problem is that not much survives of their naturalistic painting, because it was all done with fragile material like tempura on wood. That's why most surviving examples are the mummy portraits, since those were preserved buried in a desert with no humidity.

We have way more examples of their pottery, such as this >>7028348
since that's much more durable than tempura on wood. But it's also impossible to do any rendering on it. Ceramic art was very stylized because that's what the medium called for, NOT because the artists didn't know how to draw or paint naturalistically.

Consider this ceramic piece from 18th century France. This was obviously centuries after the Renaissance started and every artist could do perfect naturalistic painting, but all the ceramic art from the period still looked like THIS, because that's just how ceramic art looks like.

it's such a shame that most of it is gone
also remember there were many famous ancient painters like Zeuxis:
>Although his paintings have not survived, historical records state they were known for their realism, small scale, novel subject matter, and independent format. His technique created volumetric illusion through manipulating light and shadow, a change from the usual method of filling in shapes with flat color. Preferring small scale panels to murals, Zeuxis also introduced genre subjects (such as still life) into painting.

>Pigments were very expensive to make and they went bad quickly.
Not really. Rust, ochres (dirt; dull yellows, oranges, reds), chalk & lead white, charcoal, and you've got yourself a dull Zorn palette, sufficient to mix skin tones.

Cinnabar raises this to a full Zorn palette. Verdegris gave a green; there are (rare) blue ochres (both permanent enough).

Just look ITT;many colors are still there.

Highly realistic life drawing is a technique, techniques can be lost. As was the case at the end of Greco-Roman civilization. It was revived by Giotto and other artists who, for one reason or another, decided to leave the studio for once and really draw things as they saw them. Maybe the whole European continent was the target of bombardment by alien brainwashing rays during the Renaissance.

I fully understand that the last emperor did basically nothing except beg the west for help and then died. What historical significance did Constantine XI have? What lasting legacy did he leave us?

For example Ceasar paved the way for the Republic to become the Empire.
Hitler and his actions explain nearly the entire political landscape of the modern world.
Constantine the Great normalised the Christian religion across the Mediterranean.

What did Constantine XI do?

no. presumably large penis is basically the same as erect penis giving a clear sexuality to the art. you obviously don't want to do that. since this is a fertility god, clear virility is important, the phallus is the most common symbol of fertility, though it is not the same as sexual in pornography.

yes but not really. there's lots of cheap ways of practicing sketching and printing. and everyone made their own paints from local materials it wouldn't be that hard since it follows from ink for writing. also, no way is marble from a quarry cheap at all, especially with the huge demand for it. carving wood would be, at least if you're not somewhere with no trees, but did they even do that?

the latins (the people from the Latium region of italy) and the greeks were varied in looks, they were neither "BROWN" nor "WHITE NORDIC", a diversity of traits is mentioned or depicted everywhere in Greco-Roman media like frescoes, statues (which were PAINTED) or books like the Illiad.
modern genetic testing shows that both aristocracy and commoners cluster together with their modern descendants, your attempts to classify either half of a continent as inferior have no basis in reality

PD: stop judging by physical traits, judge by trait CLUSTERS. look at >>7028892 , >>7028614, >>7028348,>>7028315, >>7028291 and tell me they're the same ethnic group as >>7028243, >>7028251, >>7028255 and >>7028273. it's as retarded as looking at photos of Native Americans and saying "YEAH THIS IS WHAT ALL W.A.S.Ps LOOK LIKE BECAUSE THEY LIVE UNDER THE SAME STATE!!!"

>this is a big fucking conspiracy I smell here
christianity popped up and in their retarded resentment they destroyed pagan temples, artworks, libraries and culture because they were products of values which they couldn't embody. Statues of gods, mythical heroes or admirable human examples (athletes, statesmen, generals) made by excellent artists are of no use to a crowd of broke worthless losers (ancient equivalent of bitchless, skilless, careerless AIshit loving /pol/tard chuds), and their existence causes them extreme envy, shame and resentment (slave morality), so they burn, demolish or deface these works and shame or even kill the artists, scientists and philosophers that produced them. same phenomenon as taliban or ISIS pigs smashing statues. the only remaining subjects for art that remain are the holy trinity or simple geometric shapes and patterns (abstract and nonhuman shit so it won't make religious extremist chuds go purple with rage and shame), but then byzantine iconoclasty came and art turned even shittier, culminating in the toddler-made trash in your picrel. though it's a fitting representation for that emperor since he was a stupid loser cuck.

>tldr many ancient painted works or statues were destroyed, the tradition was lost until the church lost influence during the rennaisance (rennaisance means REBIRTH, as in classical values of anthropocentrism reborn) and couldn't crush artists and patrons balls as hard anymore.
