I was group drawing 5 min figgies and they made me draw fatties. I was so disgusted. I’d rather draw men than draw fat people. Then they didnt want to draw my weird obstetrician m models because the anatomy was too extreme.

I drew mine pretty fast. I am a much slower figure drawer. so maybe that is what kept the looseness. 2.5 hours is long for me. I mean, i spend that long on a face, but i spend like 8 minutes on the rest of teh figure.

Colored. I started laying single colors on 142-144. Just permanent carmine and burnt sienna with a touch of blue or yellow. Also i discovered the direction of your brush strokes makes a huge difference when blending an edge. I was jsut spamming it and it would go everywhere. I always run out of space. How do I improve on this.
Also, head to torso ratio, if I start by the head I get good proportions but it looks too stiff, if I start by the spine, I get the line of action but I struggle to figure the proportions.
One would normally say proportions aren't as important on a figure drawing as it is in an anatomical sketch, but they look way off.

>>7042263
your mannequins look familiar. are you studying sometime, or is that your own style?
if I'm doing times I'll do a progression. like 5 30 sec figs, then 5 1 min, then 4 3, then 2 5, then like 1 15 min. something like that.

>>7042643
more practice is the simple answer, but you might try to do a light sketch of the outline of the fig, but not a contour, more like a polygon shape that encompasses the main parts of the figure, then filling it in. but I think you'll get more out of mileage.

>>7042864
best tip I know is to just keep at it. it's like learning a new language, takes time. you might try taking smaller bits at a time if you're struggling. like, just the torso, or hips, etc

how long should it be taking me to draw a full body figure as a beg? I'm extremely slow at them and want to get much faster and accurate to the refs. these are 10 minutes. I've tried 2, 3, and 5 minute gesture/fig drawings but wasted an entire month because I didn't know what I was doing. I've made good pieces before for my skill level with tons of refs, but it literally took me ~52 hours of work for my first piece with 2 figures and 16 hours for my latest single fig piece.

Still trying to figure out which brush and technique to use for shadow mapping. The charcoal brushes just aren’t very controllable. Kinda feels like maybe the soft airbrush worked better. Like the knee shows decent form shadow, I think. But I’m hesitant to use soft airbrushes because of all the “hard round” propaganda.

Looking pretty good to me anon
Biggest problem in the picture is imo the woman's arm (her left arm) on the left figure
The face doesn't matter because it's clearly underdeveloped, there is nothing wrong with just positioning the head and scribbling in the impression of a face and hair and leaving it at that
But her left arm is all sorts of wrong, too short, shoulder connects to her back, it's just a literal cylinder with no impression of the underlying forms of bicep and triceps, etc etc etc
I think you should
A: watch a bunch of videos about drawing and constructing the upper arm and shoulder and fill a page or two of sketchbook with practice and notes about the videos you watched, I have no recommendations but there are billions on yt
B: go on sketchfab https://sketchfab.com/ and find anatomical models of the upper arm/shoulder joint in various poses, like flayed anatomy figures that expose the muscle and bones, and then take screenshots of those models at various angles and rotations and draw from those
You need to jam your head deep into the shapes and mechanics of the upper arm to really build a mental 3D model of them so you can draw them however the fuck you want and know what the problem is and how to unfuck it when things go wrong
You might also immediately feel that your work looks better if you start using darker pencil to create bolder lines, most drawings look kinda shit when they're a super-mild gray graphite color and they start looking much better instantly if you use ink or a very dark graphite that has a lot of contrast with the paper tone

These look pretty proportionate for 2 min drawings. I am trying to focus on not compressing the upper body too much.

Even though I haven't done that much grinding I keep getting images I've already seen before on these practice websites for the "nude, female" option, sometimes getting the same pic twice in one session. It's mildly annoying. But I am still grateful for these convenient free resources.

I also did 30s and 1 min and I was pleasantly surprised that my proportions were decent there too.

Maybe I should start grabbing my pencil again and trying to "do a complete drawing", but I have one half-rendered figure in one of my sketchbooks and feel bad about not completing it while at the same time not really wanting to touch it.

Not too good at gestures myself, but looking at the center lines you've drawn, I can see that you're not simplifying enough. For example, in the rightmost figure, you're doing a double-S curve, where a simple C curve from the top of the back to the bottom of the foot would be more convincing. For the time being, try having the spine be one C curve or one S curve... You can also peek at some Michael Hampton figures to get a good idea of what they mean when they say "Line of Action"
Think of where the movement is going... Top to bottom, left to right, and draw one line that represents that basic gesture. This will inform you of where things are.

Use whichever one makes sense for the specific pose and model. It varies from drawing to drawing. I always try to “think” the box even when I don’t literally draw it, because torsos have a front, back, and sides just like a box does. You can do an egg to place the mass of the ribcage and then draw a box on top to place it in perspective and better define it.

>>7053130
There is no such thing as a long gesture, it’s all just figure drawing, and you keep making every line a gesture. There is no line of action. They are all lines of action. Sometimes i find these quick pages of “gestures” annoying. Like this probably took you like 4 minutes to draw. What did you do with the other 56 minutes. Warm up with some gestures, pick a pose then go deep on it or something. Or draw it for 30s, then restart and draw it for 1 min, restart draw it for 2 min, restart draw it for 5 min, restart draw it for 10 min. Then you can figure out how to balance your time and level of detail.

>>7052517
Same goes for you, the action line / gesture is like the first 4s of a drawing. It means nothing. It’s one of the first things that you drop. I think of it like the little arrow that you sketch so that you remember what direction the light source is. There is so much more left to draw jsut keep going. It’s going to suck and look horrible, but there is no point in tuning up and practicing your first stroke 1000 times and never making the other 1000 strokes that you need to finish the figure

>>7053039
You picked some nice poses, jsut do like 1000 more…

>>7052498
Dont get too attached to any one drawing. The more time you spend with it the more scared you will be to fuck it up. Just fuck it up, it’s ok, you can draw another one and fuck that shit up too. It’s like free practice.

>>7052311
Post the results! I used to go to one that was like $5 for 3 hours. I was easily the worst person in class, i would flip my paper over between poses because i was so embarrassed. Show up early to get a good seat with good lighting.

that's sort of what i was asking about. i know i just need to draw 1k more figures. should I spend more time on the ones I drew? less time? volume over quality? also most of the poses i draw are front facing with a focus on the torso, kinda wanted to see if i could do the squatting pose but realized it was beyond me.

you might try to find any of the free "getting started" type lessons out there, just to get the ball rolling. 45m is quite a bit of time, which might be be better spent going through more of the basics so you have a better foundation, but if you enjoy doing the figures, keep them in the rotation.

>>7058389
Draw bigger. Dont use the 8 heads thing just draw the negative spaces around the figure. Your reference image may have odd camera angles which make measuring 8 heads for landmarks kind of a useless endeavor.

>>7058403
Line of action sucks. I have this rant i make about looking at the top of bald dudes curled up into a ball. They have some of the stiffest poses, id rather just draw from imagination than use that shit.

>>7058524
You can do what you want, but those things are useless in my opinion. It’s like drawing a bunch of floating eyes. At some point that eye needs to go into a face, that face needs to go onto a head, that head needs to go onto some shoulders, those shoulders will need to go onto a bust, that bust will need a buttocks, the buttocks needs thighs, those thighs need shins, those shins will need feet etc etc. If you isolate each individual component then when you have to combine them together you will have 0 experience merging the parts. Study the parts when you need them, otherwise i feel like doing the whole figure gets you experience with every part of the body all the time at all different angles.

It’s very hard to frankenstein a model together, proportion to the other body parts, orientation to the other body parts, occlusion from the other body parts etc. Those things are more useful to train your eye for than a skeleton that you never see.

Went through some figure copies again and the moment I attempt to apply what I learnt to reference images my quality just does a nose dive. I feel like I must have fell into some sort of trap of either (or and)
> Doing only studies/ non-recreational drawings
> Not fully understanding what I learn in the studies and then ending up only applying the most surface level things I did.
Just really irritating myself since I know I can do better and I feel like I understand the lessons that I being told but when I'm supposed to execute on what I learnt I just choke.
Want to do some finished drawings too since I heard that helps, but every time I attempt to do a more chilled out/ recreational drawing, I immediately notice the things I'm doing wrong, how I'm not applying what I learnt in my studies properly, and then I just end up trashing the drawing before I get anything meaningful out of it.

I always recommend Hide-channel. following along to his "croquis" vids is is right around when I started to see a marked improvement in my stuff. I would just slow the playback speed so I could copy what he was doing stroke for stroke. Looked like dogshit to start. I was trying to learn anatomy stuff at the same time, so those lessons combined worked well for me. Hide has simple shapes, and then I could visualize where the anatomy slotted in as I learned.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-Ej9EIlfoc

I never went through any video courses, maybe some other anons could recommend something.

I also just got morpho's simplified forms book recently and I'm kind of tempted to stop my Hampton studies for the time being and do a mix of both Hide and morpho instead with the hopes that would help ease me into doing more chilled out non-study related drawing.

Yes, it's just a 2B pencil and a lot of erasing. I actually don't like rendering at all (too tedious and time consuming) but it's the only way for me to convey some kind of depth. Your figures are very vivid and three-dimensional without much rendering. I would like to improve in this regard, too.

i think building a system for yourself really helps, low-timer feels more like a performance than a piece. so when i am making adjustments to improve it's to my process instead of the drawing itself. but then it comes time to execute and 80% of my planning is destroyed by nerves and rushing but it is what it is. like >>7066209 says practice is necessary, and these are drawn quite small (my sketchbook is 8.5 in. tall).
if it helps motivate you, i only started doing these again because someone much better than me showed me their 60s warmups progress over 100 days. i don't think i'm even at 50% of the quality he achieved and his starting ones were closer to stickmen.

Went to life drawing, was unsatisfied with my work, came home and did 30 minutes of "class drawing" on line of action.

I have to say my 1 minute drawings are not so different from my 30 second drawings, they are even worse at times and my technique is basically the same but I go slower with the 1 min poses.

Doing 5 and 10 minures after is weird because I still lay down a crude gesture with freer strokes but then I have time to hone in on parts, but my brain is still in "gotta rush there is no time" mode.

With ten minutes I drew slowly from the get-go. So for me the different timeframes are not so connected yet. I feel like my 30s skill is pretty decent for now so I should focus my efforts on longer drawings.

Thank you all for posting, this thread is a great motivation. Let's keep enjoying the sound and feel of pencil on paper.

Was finally able to get going with some drawings today, went through those hide videos and drew along side them, felt like I understood what they were trying to teach (like how the line closest to the head indicated the top of the torso and the lines bellow meant where the bottom of the pelvis was) and saw that my drawing's were turning out alright, but as soon as I get to the reference I still seem to choke and everything turns out really weirdly, I know I'm getting something wrong in terms of actually drawing the pelvis and ribcage and it's relationship with each other but I can't seem to click to what it is and I'm sure there's a few more problems that I know exist but not registering/ don't know at the moment.

i was thinking about what i could try to change, the method i've been doing so far draws a lot of segments, almost a light construction, but the proportions and line quality get really bad when i rush. so one approach might be to eliminate unnecessary lines, i'm hoping that the contour + a limited number of internal landmarks is enough, plus i am forced to think of the overall proportions instead of segments. i think a couple of the ones from today (with that mindset) were successful so it's worth pursuing further.

Got a fountain pen. It's quite scratchy so in that way it makes me less likely to just randomly scribble. But otherwise I'm making the same lines as with other mediums.

These are just a few 1 min tryouts, I only popped in the cartridge a small while ago so ink feed is not perfect yet

I got a Kaweco Perkeo. First I was autisming out checking online what to get, but then I went to a store with a cute sales girl and I was able to buy one quite quickly. I should've invited her over to my place for a life drawing lesson... It's not a pen I've seen mentioned anywhere online but it feels decent enough.

Frankly the marks are not a whole world different from a ballpoint pen for example, but it just feels good in an inexplicable way. It makes me wanna keep sketching.

Got around to doing figures, wish I could improve drawings the legs without it looking either too sharp where the curve happens or just becoming a cylinder, keeping the proportions in check and some other stuff. But after looking at the 'finished' figure I drew from a reference and thinking back to the last time I did it I feel like I'm making alright progress.

Life drawing today. I feel like I'm kinda stagnating at the moment. My figures look kinda human but I feel like every week I'm just churning out the same level of output "mechanically". Like I'm not putting my heart and soul maximum energy into making the best picture I possibly can but just rolling along.

I think I gotta change things up, maybe switch to painting for a few weeks. I contemplated doing it today as well, but I've already been painting at home and I felt like I might go crazy if I get too obsessed with nailing the right colors in class as well.

I first did keys to drawing partway through, and our class has a bit of a focus on this kind of observational drawing. Teachers will point out areas you should measure/remeasure, negative spaces you should pay more attention to, plumb and level lines to pay attention to. They will mention classical composition rules for studies but let you do your own thing.

I started watching the video course "Constructive Figure Drawing" by Steve Huston and I've seen about 8 videos so far, but it's all just been ideas with no concrete suggestions on how to put it all into practice. Maybe it gets better or it will start "sinking in", but if I have limited time/energy I prefer to just draw instead of watching lectures.

Bumps?
I mean, I model arms after what I see, what I know AND what looks right. It's always a balance between knowing, seeing, and artistic choices.

Just don't make straight tubes, look up anatomy and muscle structures of the arm, try to recognize muscles in figures, and apply it to your drawing.

great thread everybody

>>7082211
I agree with the other anon, it mostly just comes from the mileage of drawing thousands of figures. Yours are already quite good, some of those lines are really nice. You can refine your approach to get more consistent results, like always starting with the head or ribcage and quickly getting the most important gesture lines, 3 major masses, anatomical landmarks and proportions down first.
Vilppu talks about it here:
https://youtu.be/aOtVUHgJqQk?t=49
