if I squint, the contours of you figure are fine, but all the details in the interior of the forms are lost and muddy. I'll recommend a short video from Kenzo / Love Life Drawing about the body. he makes a good point about viewing the body as an ant rather than slug. slugs are blobby/amorphous, where as ants have lots of different points articulation. you're missing some key surface landmarks that help your forms pop - namely the collar bones.

https://youtu.be/AYKwcnTR6zQ?t=30

>>7038994

one of the best works I've seen from you, well done

>>7039004

play with the line weight a little. the darker/thicker a line is, the more it 'comes forward' to our eyes. so you can slightly thicken the line of his jaw since it overlaps his neck and some of his hair, for example.

>>7039066

head and arm+hand holding the phone are out of proportion. flip your canvas and really look before moving onto coloring/inking for mistakes like that. I hope you are using reference

>>7039074

the good is that you have some sense of surface anatomy on the torso. I also think the hand holding syringes (?) looks good. a couple things to work on: feet. If you're have a hard time constructing them, block in some simple shapes and make a note to study from reference in the future, then keep it moving. the legs are out of proportion with the rest of the body - they should be longer from what I can see. the posing of the figure is awkward. if you tried standing like that, you'd probably strain your back or fall over. lastly, the head seems like an afterthought as it just stick straight up off the figure instead of leaning with the pose.

>>7039062

when it comes to tools, it all comes down to what the intent is. do you need a perfectly straight line for perspective or something? then use a ruler.

Don't listen to him, work on getting everything right first even if it takes much longer (get your proportions right, learn to simplify the face into simple forms), then work on making it consistently right and from consistency you'll naturally start to be faster, only then you start doing quick poses all while still maintaining the quality you worked your ass off to acquire at the start. Practice makes it permanent, don't repeatedly practice what you said yourself to look like shit. To start find one face and spend an entire week on it, you'll learn a lot more about a face's feature this way and learn how to simplify, don't just copy the face

rather than going back to smaller drawings, you could just use more reference and try it out before putting it in your comp, for example if you looked at some coffin pictures and sketched a couple of coffins before drawing that one at the bottom it would have come out better, and you would know how to draw good looking coffins
have you tried oil/acrylic painting?

This is really nice, I like it a lot, very theatrical, reminds me of dracula the musical, I think you should definitely watch more theater if you don't already and study how they do lighting, they use tons of green lighting and to make the face the center of focus they usually use a very bright cyan over it. I made this edit to show what I meant, my execution is poor (sorry) but I hope it makes things clearer. Also, I think theatrical lighting is the closest we can get to studying how additive lighting works artistically IRL besides digital art.

I left the abdomen green because sometimes they have a supporting light beneath...

You can mix and match whatever you find your favorite artists draw best, you dont have to stick to one. Like study the way artist A draws lips and artist B draws eyes.

Your anatomy needs some work and your linework is too busy and inconsistent. Which line is the face of the lower facing side of that hammer?
Find a way to differentiate foreground and background characters, like how manga artists give their characters a white outline/glow, or how characters in the foreground tend to have a darker line weight. >What would you say your method to internalize it? instead of copying?
draw as many drawings as you can using refs but when you are drawing try to see the pictures as 3D piece, once you have the hang of it go for a more detailed version, repeat this until it's very close to the refs, once you are good at this understanding the forms underneath of anime styles is going to be easier way easier, at this point all it is left is polishing your style. IE 1 part is just the very basic then it goes more detailed on part 2 and 3 and 4 are just understanding the planes of the face of this ref.
having a basic understanding of the human anatomy would makes some parts very easy to understand like the socokets, nose bridge, cheekbones, jaw forms which then you have to stilyze but you need a very basic knowledge tho.

Tried out gouache today first time giving it a real shakedown and boy that was rough, went with a limited palette called like secondary or something. I could NOT for the life of me get this greenish yellow in the apple and most colors were just off.

Spent a lot of time just trying to get a good enough yellow greenish color and gave up at the end but what I've gathered is maybe I should practice just picking a color from something and trying to color match it instead of just straight jumping into a piece.

Hehe, apples are lovely. Remember when painting with gouache, it is always shadow before light, which means if you don't want to have muddy colors, during the filling-in process of the shadows, you have to shape out the spots of highlight, leaving some space with a thin layer of shadows for the impression of light. Wait for the paint to fully dry and then add in the highlights. Take into consideration that your pigment may be lifted to the surface, you will have to counterbalance that color by pre-mixing your white pigment with the colors you want, for example, a tint of green. Wait for that layer to dry and then add in pure white. That way it gives the illusion of ambient occlusion. How thick of a layer of paint is up to your style and preference. Good luck!

The hair is gorgeous but there are some issues. Her right hand needs completely redone and her left hand's index finger looks very silly and out of perspective. Also what's going on in this triangle? It's her shoulder, so it should be the color of her sleeves, not her skintone. Also, from the perspective on her other shoulder, we should be seeing the sleeve puff over the top of her left hand. Hey /int/ & /beg/, I am just getting into all this art stuff, but I went ahead and made an OC anyways. At this point, this is the 4th piece I've completed, and by far the best. Though, I know it is not that good, but it was what I was capable of. At the time, I had not really practiced anything at all, I was just going off of what little I could learn in an afternoon or so of watching basic YouTube video tutorials that explained some basic concepts. I have since done some more practicing, mostly with basic forms and a little bit of perspective. I just kind of stumbled upon /ic/ recently, and subsequently the guide in the OP, which I intend to follow more closely. The curriculum seems a bit better than what I had plotted out for myself. Anyway, if you did, thanks for taking the time to read all that. I appreciate it. If anyone has any advice in any regard, I'll happily consider it.

main tasks towards learning to draw:

1. perfect construction of the human figure in all poses, from imagination
2. rules of linear perspective.

In those 2 goals, all fundies are encapsulated, at least for line drawing. Proportion, form, perspective, anatomy, gesture, etc.

Worry about that first, then you can start worrying about value and color for painting

I suspect you are drawing too slow. Are you on a tablet or using mouse? As you can see in the original picture the line weight is varying like the end of the thin ends of the eyelash compared to the base at the eye or the neck. Just using one line of equal thickness for everything will give a very stiff look most of the time. Very digital on/off kind of feel to your lines. Personally I wouldn't be afraid to break up my lines or use multiple lines. For line weight you can go over things with the same brush multiple times or increase/decrease the size.

I turned off pressure sensitivity because I asked for advice here and someone said to try with it off because it'd be another thing to learn as I wanted to focus on drawing smooth lines.

I'm on a Tablet, a pretty big one. Should I turn the pressure sensitivity on or just try as you said and go over lines multiple times?

just go over it multiple times and cut into it with the eraser to get sharp edges.

Why are you jumping straight into line art. Your proportions are gonna look like shit. Learn to draw the shape of the head and the proportions of the face first.

I drew the pic of Firelord Ozai earlier this thread, I have been using the Loomis method for proportions. However this time I based the proportions off of the Castlevania Carmilla pic and they seem a bit more stylized than the typical thirds of Loomis.

Actually I'm combative over being called mikufag; no jury would hold me responsible for choking the life out of you.

And I didn't agree with the original advice. Troubleshooting your own drawings is basically Job One for a self teacher. And if he can see a specific part that he thinks is off, then he's at the level to sweat it out for a bit and try to fix it and it'll be productive practice.
Nobody should feel obligated to fuck off and do something else when he sees a specific thing he wants to try or fix in a drawing.

Applied the critique I got here + the red line thread on my piece.
It's been a while since I've done any serious study, so I should probably get to that next ;v;
