No one else made the thread so here we are. Port art you have made / are working on in traditional mediums.
Discuss traditional drawing / painting / sculpting.

Some ice breakers:
- what is a new technique or change to your process you've tried recently? How did it go?
- what goals do you have for 2024?
- what do you like most about making traditional art, or what do you like most about your preferred medium?

made this between the 31/12 and 01/01. I wanted to test fountain pens on watercolour paper. It was cold pressed arches so it had quite the texture but it was able to handle it relatively well.

I wanted to use the fountain pens as an alternatives to finelines but i guess i would go for 005 fineliners if i wanted to go for the finest of details.

>>7012481

I'm experimenting with layering and glazing currently, top right is a wip of this. Think it has a lot of potential. I'm trying to make art cards. There's a few who do it but most are either scaled prints of originals or they use markers/pencil. Afaik nobody really paints mini ones. I've sold some previous experiments on canvas panel, but have now found canvas sheets which are more card-like and appealing.

>2024 Goals

Paint plein-air more. Improve fundies in general but especially gesture/anatomy.

> What I like about traditional/medium

I like the slow drying of oil. I felt acrylic was too fast. Gouache is cool but I still get messed up by the value shift when it dries.

2024 goal is to also do more plein air painting, I did a lot last summer but the fall and winter have been an overload of rain.
Also I want to start experimenting with how I can use my knowledge to better express ideas instead of merely "painting what I see" like I've been doing the past year. I want to see how I can start bending the rules.

Also, I have some small paintings done on canvas scraps, how would you go about framing them? They are not stretch on a frame but how would I mount them to a decorative frame still?
Glue them to a board first? Would that work?

Is nice to this thread around again thank you for making it
>what is a new technique or change to your process you've tried recently? How did it go?
Im trying alla prima and impasto and I'm quite enjoying it painting in small canvas or left out wooden from previous artworks or a construction at home.
>what goals do you have for 2024?
Painting more cats outside college (I'm preparing an exam rn) and maybe doing commisions of animal portraits? also learn how to draw dogs and other animals, maybe plants... Maybe learning how to make things look more realistic/believable too.
- what do you like most about making traditional art, or what do you like most about your preferred medium?
I think i like the textures, the freedom of decisions. I like oils and watercolor and I cannot decide which one is my favorite from them, I do not paint tradionally too often but I like to do it when I'm on vacations.

I didn t know you should not put hands on paper without having a protective sheet. My skin sweat made it impossible to blend anymore after the skull was done XD.

Posting this here as well, maybe someone jas the magic tip here: I own a Mabef 06 easel that's been in storage for around a year and a half due to me moving around. Storage unfortunately wasn't heated so I could tell some of the screws and other metal parts got some discoloration now that I finally brought it home. However I now can't for the life of me adjust the shelf. I am seriously bummed out because if I can't move the shelf from its lowest position the easel is practically useless. Already undid everything that can be loosened by hand. What the fuck do I do now? You can do it before painting over, but applying oil as a finish is not really a good solution. Oil on itself is not very stable and it tends to yellow as well.
Why dont you use a varnish? If the painting isnt dry enough use retouching varnish.

>>7017506
Not that simple, even with tracing paper. You can achieve something similar, but it'll never be as convenient as it is in digital

>>7019525
Test on a small area, let dry. You want the area to sit astride the border of a patch, so you can compare.

A varnish should even things out;I'd expect it not to sink in further (you can think of it as some kind of relatively fast drying glue: it should start drying fast enough to seal the surface before sinking in)

>> No.7019830

>>7019355
not him, but if you go to museums and look at paintings (which are all varnished) you can see that some areas are glossier still than others. i think that's what he means by just doing a varnish not being enough to even out uneven sheen. this is especially true of medieval and renaissance paintings, although when an area is glossy it is usually in the shadows, dark areas, or saturated glazes.
ideally, the painter should be selective about where to have the gloss and where not to, instead of relying on varnish to even out.
fat over lean is often abused, where someone paints over an area repeatedly, adding more oil each time until it becomes much glossier than the rest.
there are other solutions like painting over with paint to correct gloss instead of just oiling out

Art like this is worth nothing on the secondary market for the exact reason you stated. The process is mysterious to the point of being banal. At a certain point nobody cares how something was made if the workmanship isn’t obvious.

Paintings that hold value tend to be paintings that are evidently handmade. Van Gogh’s work holds value because you can see he made it, and you can look at his other work and see the same thing, so on and so on. It looks like a thing a guy made. You feel like him in front of it painting it when you’re in a museum. There’s a raw quality to the paint, and an occasionally measuring blunder, or a color that got mixed into another color.

This guys art looks like a product. Maybe he’s hand making these things, painstakingly painting them, but I don’t give a fuck, and I doubt many people do.

Some of them don't really spread with water very well. This is my first go at dye based mediums. I'm coming from a miniature painting background. I obsessed about pigments after getting sick of game paint lines mixing their shit in retarded ways that make blending a downward spiral into mud and not listing their pigments. (Also Vallejo just got bought by a private equity firm.)
But I have no idea how this shit is supposed to behave.
I will say that some of them took a while to saturate the brush. The spots are from watercolor paper. I should have used the maker paper I got on clearance at Walmart.

If you wanted to seal them, you can use some epoxy resins (possibly even UV cure to make it fast) or maybe mod podge. Something else might be getting mica powders and mixing the pigments with white acrylic to get custom colors, though I'm only working on theory that it would yield results.

The first post, this and one other had two size print variants. The one you see now and one that's 17x11in. Curiously enough they sold more than I anticipated. Each person that was curious, asked or went and bought one got a story that's attached to each print and the idea behind them. Similar, but not exactly. Watercolor usually still has a little body to it, though not much, while ink is like painting with pure liquid. And the marks you make in ink are even more difficult to adjust than the ones you make with watercolor, because most inks dry to a non-water-soluble state.

But if you can do one you can probably do the other.

I wish it wasn't that cluttered but it is what it is atm.
For the cats I have considered all the things, including a videogame. But the most probable future project is a wordless comic to explore their world.

What steps are taken to achieve a smooth and three dimensional result like this?
I've been doing oils for a while now but getting to this level of refinement is just crazy.

Has anyone used the Chroma Atelier Interactives? It's supposedly got more workability than standard acrylics. I might get this Pthalo Turquoise regardless because I want to be enveloped in this color.

I painted a sort of robot thing, or maybe a helmet. Used gouache. Any feedback is appreciated.

Really nice shine effects on the suit, great shapes. The expression is a little lifeless, I think adding some darker pupils might help.

These are nice! nice colours, they're a bit blurry, if that makes sense, like the shine in eyes tends to have sharp edges. But that's hard with pastels I think.

>>7046120
Nice! can't think of anything.

Interesting, I see a sort of alien creature with googles.

>>7045200
I think you did well! perhaps darken the reds a bit where the shadow lies the contrast from the cherry that's in light. Nice background!

>>7044195
Neat! Try making the lines on the low side thicker, to imply some slight shadow, I think the upper two turned out best! nicely fluffy fronds but the faces are great too!

>>7043095
Very nice! Great tones! how long did it take? Really love the values, the subtle dark on the panels in shadow.

Love all the demon guys, you really captured the spirit of the inspiration.

>>7039169
This is great!
Is it gouache? Love the shine and definition of form through light, I find I have to crutch on linework a lot to define form.

>>7039018
Beautiful!
I think some light shining through the leaves would add some depth, more light closer to the source passing through the leaves, perhaps pushing the shadow behind the tree more?

>>7038104
Nice! Great figures, love the woman and her face, though I feel the torso might be a bit short, or the panties are shown as though shes facing us, while she's maybe leaning towards us, so the foreshortening reads like a short torso. But great face!

Would anyone here know a good book for color theory or I guess more specifically something that gets right into the meat of how to color mix to get the colors you are seeing? I am really really struggling getting a color right and its so aggravating, takes up entire time of doing a piece.

Understanding how we see and how the brain interprets signals from the eyes is an important part of it.
James Gurney's book Color and Light is quite good.
Plus getting a solid grip in rendering things in grayscale helps a lot, if you can render something convincingly in grayscale or monochrome, just dark and light, your color work will be more solid too.

Try laying in your rough strokes first and then go over them wth a dry soft brush (use synthetic) while the paint is still wet, you'll create soft blends this way for sure.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask so sorry if it isn't.

Picked up this painting and the mat is fucked, it's got mold spots and shit all over it and was warped so I was going to get it remated.

Looking at it though, isn't the way the matting is done stupid? Shouldn't the backer board be non visible and the 2nd mat go to the edge? Debating just getting a smaller frame too because it seems kind of ridiculous large for the painting. And maybe changing the mat color too idk

Would love some input from some artist because I'm just not sure.

>- what is a new technique or change to your process you've tried recently? How did it go?
haven't been drawing in months, trying to be more conceptual
>- what goals do you have for 2024?
not going broke
>- what do you like most about making traditional art, or what do you like most about your preferred medium?
charcoal and paper really brings out the neanderthal in me. there's something about i can't quite put my finger on. just me, a stick of charcoal, a piece of paper and the rest of the world can just fuck off for a few minutes or an hour.
