Your picture has so much charm and style I had a hard time preserving what was good about it in my redline. I think, the only thing of worth in my drawing is the sense of form. I made sure that each article of clothing ‘wrapped’ around the solid form of the body, using ellipses in my construction to aid the sense of perspective. I think, if you just keep finding the artists you love and keep copying their work, using construction of course, you will eventually sort that out. The technical side of drawing is very straightfoward. Just make sure you don’t lose your soul in the process.

Were you the guy that made the Bridgman study threads and drew through Bridgman twice? You did just one pass purely copying and then another pass purely memory, right? I’ve been doing Bridgman by doing a copy and then a memory drawing and repeating it until I’m happy with the memory version, one drawing at a time. I’m not sure if that’s the best bang for the buck compared to a pure copying pass and a pure memory pass. If you’re the same anon, got any advice on that? Since you did Bridgman and then whatever you did to git so much gudder since then, like >>7036309 said, I was wondering if you could give some advice on studying. Thanks senpai

Find a picture by an artist you want to be as good as
Copy it
It will be shit. That's ok
Copy it again
Find some aspect that annoys you (your inability to copy the face/hand/etc) and hyperfocus on that, fill 15 sketchbook pages with attempts and practice for all I care
If you run into a wall with this pic a second and switch to that, too much focus on one target causes that target to basically become impossible to understand, like when you say a word over and over again and it decodes into random noise and sounds stupid

The structure is not quite right underneath. When doing studies, spend a bit more time looking at proportions and measurements more carefully. Proportions are just one of those never ending problems artists have to deal with. My own work is still filled with proportion errors, it just gets less and less over time. Hi anon, this is an extremely charming drawing. I love Braum and this is making me want to pick up league again.

The only thing I have to point out is the foreshortening, I think you went a bit too severe with it. It almost looks like the lower body is separated from the upper body

I think you did a great job with this one, the proportions are all good and the pose is interesting. I was watching a lecture by an animator today, and I learned something that really blew my mind, but in retrospect was really obvious. The reason why you use CSI lines is so that you preserve the energy of the gesture in the final drawing. When you clean up a sketch, things always get stiffer, and the way to combat that is to push simple shape dynamics further. This concept applies no matter how realistic you’re drawing. If you look at Rubens or Michelangelo drawings, they’re fully of life and movement, despite being very finished. I think, working with this in mind, could be a useful thing for you to think about.

That, plus all the usual stuff of making master copies, being mindful about proportions and form, and overall fundies. Good work, anon

Good composition, anon. Head seems fine, but I would spend some time studying the facial features and the way shadows fall on someone’s face. I learned how to do this by copying Mike Mignola, doing exact copies, then putting away the reference and redrawing it from memory. Shadow shapes can be memorized and applied like anything else in your visual library.

Pick your favorite artists to study. Our tastes will differ, so you may not agree with everything I did in this redline (which is fine!)

There are of course dozens of compositions you could choose based on the story point, but a basic trick is to use foreshortening, and to make objects go back in space. Your composition is quite flat, everything is seen from the side, and that’s okay if that’s the effect you’re going for, but things could be more dynamic, like you said.

For anatomy, the problem isn’t really anatomy, but being able to draw something accurately, aka proportions and observation. Do more figure drawings, each 20-30 minutes. Measure carefully and correct your mistakes. Do master copies in the same way. You’ll improve very quickly if you focus on drawing accurately.

sorry for missing your post. I did go through Bridgman twice, the way Finch recommended, but I didn't post it on /ic/. That was back in February of 2022, and I did it all in one month. I think, because i crammed it all, I didn't get that much out of it at the time, but as I kept drawing, the Bridgman information started spewing out from the back of my mind, influencing every figure I did afterwards. If you look at this one >>7045693 I feel like the girl has so much Bridgman-ness to it, along with all my other figures, and it's amazing I can still remember those patterns even after 2 years. It just keeps stewing in your subconscious and continually improving your art, even if you never touch Bridgman again.

I did all the copies in a week, then all the memory drawings in the following 3 weeks, separately. I think this way is more difficult, but you get more out of it, because if you try to do a memory drawing of it without drawing it beforehand, you're forcing yourself to draw it in your head over and over and really grind it into your neurons.

As for overall study advice, I still don't know the best way to study. There are 2 competing systems for study in my head atm, the David Finch study stream way, and the Rad Sechrist project city way. The way Rad recommends you draw is by drawing the same reference image 100-200 times, continually copying it, dragging your drawing over the reference, noticing where you're off, then redrawing it, trying to correct your mistakes. I've done this type of thing now on and off for the last few months, and I feel like my art got 100x better just because of it. I highly recommend you sign up for one month of project city, just to get to that one video, titled the "head shapes" lecture, and watch it. It might change your life. Ethan Becker also has a video on it, but it's not as good.

Hm. I see, thanks senpai. Never heard of the Sechrest thing before. What I’ve been doing is kind of a weird version of Jason Brubaker’s “cognitive drawing” idea. He talks about it here:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S9Cx4pIjSvA

I think there’s definitely something to the lag time between when you do the copy and then when you do the drawing from memory: forcing that retrieval to come from “deeper storage” tells your brain it’s more important to hang on to. But the test and feedback thing like Brubaker and apparently Sechrest talk about is a huge deal too.

Maybe it would be best to do a separate copy pass, then do the separate memory pass and somehow combine it with the “comparison test” feedback mechanism that Sechrest and Brubaker use. That’ll be a shitload of work though lol

Also
>drew through bridgman twice in a month
Gawd damn, son. Well, it obviously worked. That girl’s arms in particular are the spitting image of Bridgman’s drawings. Again, thank you very much for the wisdom, anon. I really appreciate you taking the time to effortpost.

Try to use shapes that are simple as possible. Go so far as to draw only with straight lines. When doing your studies, do the same thing, make them with only straight lines, rectangles, trapezoids, etc. It’ll help you capture proportion more accurately, and that’ll transfer over into your imaginative work. Simple shapes, accurate observation, and memory of those simple shapes is what makes up most of the important stuff in drawing

This is nice, anon. Just by working more, you’ll eventually gain more control over your lines and proportions, and all the problems you’re facing now will solve themselves.

If you aren’t already, I also recommend a regular diet of master copies. Doing master copies, alongside drawing from life, will give you a multiplier effect, in terms of gains, because master copies teach you design in a way that drawing from life can’t.

I also think you should regularly do memory drawings, where after you copy a reference, you put away the reference and redraw it immediately, from memory. That’ll help enforce the shape language of human anatomy really well.

Definitely, pay more attention to proportions. For your studies, do very long poses, at least 30 minutes per figure. Use the measuring techniques Loomis lays out in “figure drawing for all it’s worth”. Do long studies from anatomy books too. remember that a human being is made out of lego shapes. learning to draw these lego shapes and putting them together with the right proportion is the most difficult thing in the world, but once you can do that, you've got the whole world as your oyster.

My suggestion to learn how to do this is to watch this video: https://youtu.be/RXb-Y_kz2aU

Do this on every single part of the body. Learn to draw heads, then learn to draw torsos, hands, legs, arms, etc. Draw a reference image multiple times, not just once, correcting your mistakes as far as possible. Then do it from memory and try to draw it accurately.

Artist that posted the original images.

Thank you for your help. I had tried drawing for fun of it reignite my passion for drawing again, but I still think that Im an inferior artist, due to drawing and studying intensly last two years and still making unappealing shitty drawings. I had been trying to get feedback and advice on how to improve but now Im only more scared to draw as the voice keep telling me how every aspect of the drawing is wrong.

Not everything is supposed to be a whooshing. It's what you like but it doesn't fit everything. Their drawing is fine as is.

Your wooshing makes things seem less static, sure, but static grounds stuff in reality and can make or break the tone and feel. On the one hand we have a serious-looking Victorian era piece that makes me understand this is grounded and gritty and then you come along and turn it into a pinup for X, or worse, convince people it should be.

It's always very difficult getting 2 characters interacting like this. I wish I had more advice other than just work on your fundies, but it really just does come down to knowing form well, having dexterity, and being able to draw proper proportions. It's an ever ending process of improvement that we have to go through, and I am not done with that journey myself.

If I had to give you a cheat code to improve faster than other people though, it would have to be memory drawings. They're a pain in the ass to do, and they make your brain foggy and tired, but they'll improve your work faster than your peers, I promise you ;)

I think you did a good job. There's nothing wildly off. Bringing in a bit more anatomical nuance to your lines might help a lot. I got a lot of my anatomy from Bridgman. It carries over surprisingly well to drawing women, and then you can just notice and refine those bridgman landmarks during your life drawing studies. Bridgman might be a bit much, though, if all you want to draw is women. There was anon in the beg thread (who draws really well) who recommended copying doujins, and I think that's a great idea.

this one was quite difficult for me, I had to redraw it several times. For something like this, just focusing more on the basic forms, using simpler lines, and taking the time to fiddle and just things is most important. The thing that sticks out to me the most is how the face is constructed, I don't think it's quite solid enough yet. Her right cheek should be more visible, I think.

very glad you're doing master copies. Look more carefully at the proportions. Draw and redraw a drawing when you're not satisfied with what you did. when you feel like you are accurate enough, redraw from memory. It's a gradual process of building your observational abilities, your dexterity, and your visual library of shapes and forms, so it just takes thousands of drawings to get better. i think it comes down to knowing the little things. Its not enough to know how to draw boob "correctly", you need to find the specific way of drawing them that looks appealing and lewd. Its not so easy and can take a lot of searching, and im not talking about polishing an individual drawing, I mean finding the ways that do tend to work, getting rid of the ways that don't. For me I can always count on some favorite shapes i like, i've already sorted through enough to know ways that work.

the biggest difference between yours and his is above, plus you can see his visual library in it, (like you can see the idea of the "real" in his work.) I think that tends to show more in people who draw sketches from memory, it always gives off a very different vibe than a reference or construction based line-art drawing. I don't see the "idea" in yours, not in the whole drawing, nor the individual parts. Once you've refined your methods, its really not so strange for it to come out with the subtle details he has though.

Anatomy is more like a tool to help solve hard problems, it doesn't teach you form (even though everyone always talks like it does, they misspeak, its like saying to use sledgehammers to pound nails.) Simply studying and drawing a figure normally is the best way to learn a form, anatomy is just for the confusing bits you have trouble with. Try studying a buff gym woman, its way easier than looking underneath the skin. Getting lost in anatomy minutia is dumb, remembering how each of the major puzzle pieces interlock is good is "probably" the only basic anatomy you really need. Maybe im exaggerating saying that, but im not so wrong. Style, charm, good methods, basic form - and the ability to do it all from memory, this is far more important.

this is a very ambitious copy anon, kudos to you. I would say, as you are learning to draw the human figure, try to limit your copy to just the human figure. In other words, you're okay leaving out the clothing and wings and props and stuff for now. Just focus on getting good at depicting the form and anatomy of the body.

another tip is to only focus on a single body part, if you are having trouble. Take just the arm, and maybe draw it 6x. 3x from reference, 3x from memory, back and forth. (in other words, do from ref, then from memory, then reference again, then memory, etc.) This way you can really drill in the shapes into your muscle memory.

Also, take some time to just do full figures that are simple cylinder figures. Much like how I drew the leg, learning to draw the simple forms of the body in proper proportion is a good skill. You can go on quickposes.com and do 5 minute poses to learn this.

The idea of doing a memory drawing the day after is good, that's what Kim Jung Gi recommended. I never did it though, because I couldn't keep organized enough to do it. I'd do several dozens of studies a day, and by the next day, I'd get mixed up over what i drew today, yesterday, the day before, etc. I think doing memory drawings right after you just drew it is good enough, desu. But if you can keep organized enough to do it, I encourage it.

something to pay attention to is the solidity of the body, the rigid box forms that the ribs, pelvis, and head make, and basically, just structural integrity overall. Make your drawings in multiple layers, using a kneaded eraser to lighten your sketch lines. I would go so far as to ink your studies, at least with a ball point pen. You want clean lines so you can judge if what you're doing is accurate or not.

Have you seen the David Finch roadmap? I learned memory drawing from david finch, and I think the roadmap proves a very good structured learning path that goes from the most basic fundamentals, all the way to being able to utilize memory drawing to it's fullest potential. As much as I like to tell people to just "copy your favorite artists" there's something to be said about learning things in the right order. You will improve either way, as long as you're drawing, but you might be able to keep your sanity longer if you follow some learning path

This probably my second attempt at drawing two people interacting with each other in perspective. To help me, and to partially mark out a wall, I sketched a box with a grid inside. Making references is rather hard since the angle is difficult to get without a tripod (camera meant to be aimed at right small of back). While I initially kept the most of the hands away from each other or on the walls, the poses proved to be rather awkward. It feels more natural to have them hold each other like this but Anon's left arm is giving me some trouble.

I didn’t get carpal tunnel. But I got commissioned to redraw some hentai for a scanlation project, way overdid it, and fucked up my hands and wrists pretty bad, my RSI was bad enough I couldn’t turn doorknobs or faucets, nevermind type or draw. I had to basically stop using my hands for anything for about a month. I was sleeping with both my wrists in braces overnight. The one big thing that helped me was the Gold Medal Bodies wrist exercise cheat sheet. https://gmb.io/wrists/

That 90% fixed my hands in a couple weeks. Then I started doing resistance exercise — INCLUDING overcoming isometric exercises for finger/hand/wrist extensors. And that got my hands back to 100%.

I actually haven’t needed to do the wrist cheat sheet since the first couple months. That was several years ago now. I do it again on rare occiasions if my wrists start to feel weird. I am able to draw for 2-4 hours a day with no ill effects.

Also, IDK if it’ll help your particular situation, but doing the carnivore diet drastically improved all of my chronic health issues, including fatigue and depression and joint pain. Been doing it 5 years now. Hope you feel better soon, anon.

the difficulty here is not so much about form or perspective, but more about proportion. if you can sort of learn to just draw forms with the right length and width, and put them together into a sane looking human, you can sort of fake perspective.

fix your lines first, they're explaining nothing at a glance. a redline's supposed to be informative

for the overall anatomy of the body, you've got it down pat, I think. the next part, now is just thousands of hours of drawing, building that dexterity, sensitivity to proportion, shape, flow, and other such things. There's no way around it except to do master copies for several thousand hours. Live in your bookshelf, copy through art books from cover to cover, and do your studies again from memory. watch the david finch study streams, those will teach you everything you need to know about how to study efficiently.

I personally think the most important fundamental in drawing is shape and proportion. If you can get those trapezoid pieces down for the torso, the triangle for the shoulder, the cylinder for the arm, and the round, peculiar anime head shape, you'll be like 90% of the way there towards drawing competently. After that, it's learning anatomy, form, clothing, and everything else.

Best way to learn that is to get the TACO anatomy books and to do the cognitive drawing method on every single diagram.

Cognitive drawing:
https://youtu.be/s_NuJIJ6wGY
https://youtu.be/G8e2DcN5kAo
https://youtu.be/S9Cx4pIjSvA

>> No.7068256

>>7068246
yes, morpho will work, but I think taco lends itself towards the anime aesthetic better, at least a little. It's important to study from reference images that you like, because the aesthetic of the reference is what your art will start to resemble. i studied a ton of Bridgman, and I think you can see traces of his michelangelo-ish figures in my sketches too. some anons might not want that

whatever you want to do though, is fine, as long as you're studying and doing memory drawings and memorizing shapes

I wouldn't spend time tracing things, and I definitely wouldn't spend a lot of time studying weird 3d models like that. It's just no good for learning to draw. Spend more time copying manga and studying taco anatomy, and just draw a lot and have fun. Memory drawings are great for retaining what you learned and transferring your studies to imagination work. I recently have been doing cognitive drawing from jason brubaker, I think it's a great way to study.

your drawing is super good, there's nothing wrong with the "fundies" side of this. I just have some design suggestions.

The first is to use more straights vs curves. You don't really want vague, squiggly lines like the ones you did for her sleeves. If possible, match straight lines against curved lines.

The second thing is her face shape, it's a bit weird, that peanut shape. I know western cartoons have that shape a lot, but I'm not a fan of it, and if you're using anime eyes, you might as well match the eyes with the proper face shape. Again, this is just a subject opinion of mine.

Anyways, don't take any of this too harshly. The drawing is great, my only gripes are with stuff that's easy to fix, if you want. You don't have to take these suggestions, of course

Thank you all for your comments! Please excuse the late response...

Yeah I really bungled that one. I was trying to have the character looking up, but that didn't come out right at all. Drawing soft/round/marshmallow-like faces is a habit since I draw those kind of characters like that, but it clearly was a weak point here. I'll have to rethink how I draw faces at certain angles to iron this one out.

>Why is she leaning so far to the right?
To make the figure look confident, like she's pushing out her chest. I have to figure out a way to communicate that more clearly.

>The legendary Hapeanut Miku makes a comeback?
Quick rundown?

Again, thank you all for your time, I really do appreciate it!

if u want to make her push out her chest, then arcing the top of the body like I did is probably your best bet. Basically you want a subtle "C" curve in the body, what you had before makes her look like shes leaning and falling over to the right. Also if you push your chest out while turned at this angle, you are going to lean backwards in space as well
