Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You are failing at the basic observation level. If you identify a gradient, soft edge, hard edge or lost edge, when you see it, then you are failing at a level where a random 4chan posters can't help you.

Its like asking someone what the plus sign means in math. Or asking what G-sharp minor sounds like. You need to get back to super basics. Its not worth anyone's time to type out this shit for some random guy on 4chan.

In my opinion, if you can draw a cowboy hat, you can draw anything.

I started out copying but i never learned anything by just copying. Art comes from understanding from what and how we see things. pick up a game like Nier Automata and swing that camera. There's even a wireframe cheat code that you can use to study. you need to be able to visualize things in your head like that wireframe.

Don't go from left -> to right.

I feel the same way for myself although I am way too dense to do much studies.
Meme ic books and youtube guides I can't even scrape enough commitment together to bother with those because I just don't care in some odd way.
Really stubborn.
I also like drawing sexy anime girls in coolgangster perspectives.
My conviction was/is that studying Japanese animation would get me the results I desired but it always feels like I fall short of the majority pack.

But I just bought my first screen tablet I hope it will help but I am very doubtful it's the key.

I don't know either with regards on what to do but I will carry on regardless like I pretty much have since I started with the animehomo endeavour.

>Literally feel like the ASG pawell except i only sometimes post my studies
Same, but I don't think he's bad but it just doesn't look like 'art' or 'illustrations' but in his defense they are *studies* and that's all pawell does and he's not shy about it either.
But there's indeed something that I feel like I'm not getting.
I feel like I'm making massive oversights in the way I approach the endeavour of drawing.

There are tons of issues there you could've fixed by pulling anatomy references (whether technical stuff or just artworks you like as a way to compare).
Like I can tell you're trying hard, but that's the thing, you also really need to make things easier for yourself.

Anyway I don't think you're a lost cause at all, I expected worse based on what you typed. 1 year is nothing. You can learn a lot from this attempt and make your next piece better. Just keep at it.

The challenge I gave myself last year (everyday even when sick / when busy (to extent I did some at 3am on workday)) busted me quite a bit as it felt like torture at times not because I dislike art but because it was just filled with many downs with occasional ups with no breaks.

I want to draw even somewhat similar to the artists I like, or even a fraction as appealing the pictures I've saved in my "appeal" folder

The issue with your head on the right is that it's flat and features are drawn as symbols. You should definitely get familar with a basic construction style and practice that on the side.

Here's actual evidence for you. If you wanna learn how to draw anime, you draw anime, simple as. Stop copying 3DPD until you burn out, draw what you want to draw, and have fun with it.
And after you get to a certain point with anime girls, THEN you find an anatomy book, and expand to proper figure drawing. Being able to give your figures cute faces will motivate you to try harder.

Notice how in your ref, the head is at a slight upward angle.

not my problem if he doesn't work on learning what he has no clue about, you don't do observation in 30 seconds, that is gesture and they focus on different things. but let him keep practicing bad habits from doing gestures without any figure knowledge and reinforcing that instead, i bet it will do wonders for him in a week compared to taking the time to learning how to simplify a figure, take the time to measure and learn proportions, check the eye level, pay attention to how muscles turn and twist, after all we are in the rush rush century and who has time to spend more than one hour on a drawing anyway, doing a few crap gesture drawings with no fundamentals backing it will net you the same accumulated knowledge at the end of the day anyway or so i heard from seasoned veterans around here

To convey to someone that they first need to sketch a gesture / construction before committing to final lines is a valid advice as many beginners somehow believe that they need to draw the final result right away, probably inspired by videos of pros they watch. Just because you're drawing loosely doesn't mean he won't reinforce wonky proportions and anatomy habits. What would it cost to learn proportions and anatomy then do gesture with them in mind to reinforce those studied proportions and anatomy
>Anon could indeed learn about basic construction and ingrain basic proportions if his goal is to draw Saber from imagination yes. So why didn't you convey this to him earlier?
Why did you tell him to do gesture when he isn't satisfied with his drawing yet, why not say to him to study the stuff he needs to be able to draw and then do gesture? The amount of /beg/s stuck doing gesture for the sake of gesture when they can't even draw anything is astounding, so maybe don't just say someone to do gesture because /beg/s can be clueless and tunnel vision on that and wonder why their figure hasn't improved a month in

I think he's started like a week ago? To me it's good that he focuses on drawing his subject of interest, no matter how good or bad it turns out, he's getting mileage with his tools and his observational skills all while keeping motivation high. These are part of the "fundies" you keep bringing up.
>Just because you're drawing loosely doesn't mean he won't reinforce wonky proportions and anatomy habits.
You frankly sound like someone who's never drawn traditionally before, and more importantly, someone who should not try to teach others. You're acting as if people should start mindlessly drilling anatomy on day 0 before attempting to make any mark on their paper... This kind of idealism is damaging and has caused many people on this board to turn into crabs who do nothing but practice "fundamentals".

I see your point about begs following Proko advices and mindlessly grinding gestures and whatnot and I agree that it's bad, but once again that's not what was conveyed and I highly doubt that's how anon understood it either.
