What's the minimum time to draw gestures? 30s,1min,5 min? And on the same matter, Vilppu or Proko?

>> No.7015697

There's not really one. But I've found that 30 seconds is usually too short for me to get any meaningful gestures down, so I usually start with 1 min.

Is it possible to build drawing endurance?

I have seen people online say, that they draw like 5 hours a day. I realized I needed more practice time, so I decided to try regularly drawing 3 hours a day. It went well for two days, but on the third day, I was so mentally exhausted that I couldn't draw anymore.

Can I get more endurance by just slowly increasing my time spent drawing? Has anyone here managed to do that? Is it even feasible to draw 5 hours a day, or are people online just lying?

>>7015823
yeah, draw til you're mentally tired then stop for the day. make sure to get quality sleep too.

>>7015823
Most definitely possible to draw 5+ hours a day. I spend 4 to 6 hours drawing per day on average. Today I went 9 hours roughly, I take breaks of course. Point is, don’t force yourself to draw long periods at a time; like you mentioned, slowly increase the amount of time. Otherwise you’ll get burnt out and never want to go near a pencil for days.

How do I wrap my ahead around lines as a medium? I can do value drawings, which are basically just painting, because value is something I can actually observe. Where the hell do lines come from? I don't see lines, imagine lines, or have the slightest clue how to convert visual imagery into lines. The places I intuitively want to mark with lines are highlights and the parts of surfaces that are closest to the viewer/camera, which is completely wrong so far as I can tell.

I have the same problem, the book by Harold Speed will give you insight on the difference between line and mass:

For a quick cue: Shapes, at their thinnest, become lines. Think about why hatching works the way it does.

Lines denote overlap, use line weight to denote ambient occlusion to every corner, the darkest area of the shadow. Big difference. Equally important to denote softness with an absence of lines, pay attention to how lips are drawn in manga. In fact, just read a lot of different manga to get an idea. In the attached picture (not a great one), but notice how the line in the cleavage abruptly stops in the middle?

Confidence and good sketching. When inking you shouldnt be making lotsa new decisions, instead you are supposed to muscle the picture from sketch to lines. If your sketch shows all the things you need to know (angle, size, distance, shape), you can simply focus on the lines coming nice and good.

Breathe deeply. Listen to music that nurtures focus - preferably something that increases in intensity over time, and that is able to grab your mind's attention so that you can draw without thinking. Maybe practice some Yoga or meditation before sitting down to draw. Make every single mark with love and care. Focus on different regions of the drawing. When you are becoming bored, take a deep breath and move on to a different region. Then come back later. Take breaks every 45-60 minutes, but don't make them too long; 5 to 10 minutes tops.

The idea is to become hypnotized by your drawing. The "flow" state is best described as a sort of droning of the mind, where your internal dialogue turns off and you become engrossed in shapes and values, to the point where your eyes sometimes lose focus and your hands are kinda doing weird scribbles on their own.

Just copying a pose off of a drawing or pinterest on its own won't teach you a whole lot but if you have specific things in mind to pay attention to it'll translate into lessons you can use to come up with stuff on your own. Reminds me of John Kricfalusi art style. Maybe you could use that to search for more artists in that style. It definitely is a western style for sure. Classic old style cartoon from the 60s-70s with a 90s style face. Someone like Gurcan Gursel maybe?

i used to be here everyday. when i was at work i was not paying attention and i was scribbling sketches in a legal pad, when i got home i would draw for hours. when the pandemic came they sent us home and then i skipped the sketches and was just drawing and painting all day long. from 2018 until AI art generators i was a drawing machine. nothing better than drawing along to a KJG stream. and i was frustrated sometimes by my skill level but i thought at least i had good ideas in my head. fright about the time kjg dropped dead from the clot shot, i switched to ai generated art. not prompting by text alone but training stable diffusion on my drawings paintings and 3d modes to have it basically clean up the presentation of my art.

in the end what ive found is that there is now zero interest in my art. before i had maybe 10 likes here and there on instagram, now its 1 or 0 even though im posting way higher quality images way more often. i tried posting on reddit and that was a mistake. i dont understand reddit. everything is offensive, everything is banned, anything i say negative gets me censored but anything i post gets nothing but angry hateful unconstructive insults. no one uses pixiv or deviant art except for furfags so theres no interest there at all.

in part i feel satisfied that i made so much art that i like. its better than i could have done by hand and there is way more of it than i could have made. but i guess im disappointed that people dont give a fucking shit. no one is insulting my skill level, they just dont like my ideas. theres no excuse to hide behind. ive shown the world what i can do, i have the power to present my vision, and the world rejected it.

Perfectly achievable, even with cheap mouses and improvised pads. Through deconstruction of anatomy into basic geometric shapes to train your muscle memory and cross-referencing from either photographs, digital media or poseable mannequins I'd say it is perfectly achievable with semiregular exercises. (twice / thrice a week)

From personal experience? Give or take four months and results should become noticeable.

And as for an extra tip, planting the lower base of your palm on the pad firmly and using gentle jabs of your thumb by pivoting it on the articulation point down the middle it makes your lines much easier to control, regardless of if they are straight lines, sweeping curves, polygons, etc.

Oh and keep your pad clean. That helps a lot too.

I have clinically diagnosed ADHD. Got wires hooked to my brain at a doctor's office, got a diagnosis, got medication that made me so focused on cleaning I forgot to go to drink water or go to work that day and now I just go zero meds. I preface this because I know there's a nigger named Howie's who made a whole lot of complaining threads about never improving and how his brain's making it hard, and it does. It really fucking does, reading the books or stickies I need to read is as much of a fucking struggle as school was for me.

BUT

I am trying techniques to work around my distractions, such as making sure I've cleaned my condo, sorted out other concerns so I have nothing to pull me away from art practice. I've been reading the books aloud and using a highlighter to help focus on the important parts of any books I'm reading, and watching videos online like Proko's beginner where I can to hold my attention better than books and clunkily laid-out stickies. It's helped me start working through Keys to Drawing and helped unpack a lot of self-defeatist mental states I fall into, not just with drawing but a lot of what I do. I WANT to improve, I DON'T want to be an annoying /permabeg/ I have established goals.

Having prepped all that I need a reality check on my skills and work ethic. My goal is to make a 108 Chapter Fanfic of a show on /co/, integrating elements of a religious pilgrimage I undertook into each chapter. I want to animate it, in a sort of visual novel style with still images and profiles next to dialog placed over the top, with proper animations for important fight scenes, promotional animatics involving songs I like, maybe voiced with AI since I can't pay people for a non-parody themed fan project like this anyway, and also lol I don't got the funds for it anyway. The thing is, my autism wants it to be ready, by April 8th, 2026. Pokemon parallels, long story.

Is that possible? Pre-beg ADHD to animating VNs and shit in two years? What's my roadmap?

>> No.7029080

>>7029042
Things are hard but as long as you acknowledge and work on either improving your ability to focus or work around it by removing distractions. You may not be able to control every impulse you have but you can control the environment and work on your own self control. It might be an uphill battle but you can definitely do it. The problem with roadmaps is everyone is different and has some adhd in their own way so even if someone made a roadmap for you, more than likely you'll hit a roadbump that they wouldn't.

Just try to create an environment where your brain and body want to draw or improve, when you find yourself being distracted, don't feel bad or like it's hopeless just try to note what took you off track from your goal and what steps could you take so that it doesn't happen next time.

I think I'd categorize that as an itch. Even if you ignore it you just want to try again. I don't have passion for drawing like real artists do, but damn I NEED to draw. I think I can call that an itch. You see what I mean?

>> No.7029726

>>7029042
I recommend getting a good grasp of perspective and forms after getting comfortable with observational drawing if your goal is to animate and draw from imagination, however, there isn't an objective "roadmap" anyone can give to you. Working towards a goal is like assembling a swiss watch without a manual, you will be fumbling around to find the right parts in order and revisiting different sections to figure out how to make them work in conjunction with each other. Other people can give you pathways and resources but think of them as manuals for a similiar but different model of watch.

You should work on your project along the way so you can identify what you parts you need and how to put it together, otherwise you will lose sight of your goals and get stuck in the eternal grind with no purpose.

I think the best art usually comes from obsessive people, passionate people, relatively innately intelligent people, and emotionally sensitive (really think about what this means) people. These types can often have a lot of flaws, sure, but I don’t think there is as much causation in that regard as much as correlation. The best art an artist will create will often occur during emotional peaks or valleys. Flatlined, dull minds usually do not create great art. For what it’s worth, my definition of great art does not include anime coom slop.

They are all pretty similar so it doesn't really matter which one you start out with.
Photoshop isn't that complicated if you just ignore/hide the stuff you don't need. Everyone just pirates it. The genp reddit has a guide if you don't know how.
Adobe Fresco is free and is pretty much Photoshop without the photo-editing features plus some helpful tools for drawing/painting. Transitioning to Photoshop would be pretty seamless.
SAI2 is very lightweight and doesn't have any unnecessary features. Nice and simple. Paid but cheap/easy to pirate.
Krita is free and open source. After nearly two decades, it is actually quite good now.
Clip Studio Paint excels for comics and illustration but does things a bit differently to Photoshop so it would be a bit annoying if you do end up switching.

How much precision am I supposed to strive for when doing studies? A lot of artists like I've seen like krenz stress the importance of being as precise as i can with my studies but also i've seen actual professional artists post studies and their stuff is very loose.

so what should i strive for when studying?

If you only study one art book ever, it should probably be keys. It gives you the intro level info on most all parts of drawing, and is especially good on the mental aspects.
A&S is extremely focused on how to draw simple three dimensional solids and build things out of them, which keys also covers, but not with anywhere near the autism. Probably just go to eviston if you can't get a good sense of volume in your drawings.

>>7038265
It depends mostly on the environment. You should take into account 1) the nearest object and its color and 2) the values of the shadows. See how in picrel, the shadows on the right are slightly bluer, because of the light reflected off of the floor into the ball's shadow. However, the colors for the blue shadows match the same values as the shadows on the right, so they're not TOO blue.

I want to be an artist who can draw anything on his own, not a copy machine, but every time I go it without the artist as reference everything starts to fall apart.

2. Do copy studies help with learning anatomy at all?

No. You'd want the opposite, a force that makes your lines even worse that you fight against, and then when you take that force away you are real smooth. weighted clothing analogy. One way to do it is to use very thin brushes and large canvases that show your wobbly lines with 0 stabilizer more. and remove your ctrl-z keys. work on drawing lines faster. then when you return to larger brushes you will be smoother.
drawing in real life has stabilizer from paper friction, no shame in having some in digital, depends on the style you are after.

use reference material more sparingly (only looking at it after you've drawn all you can without ref) and you'll be forced to remember the critical parts before returning to your work. Drawing from imagination comes with experience, once you draw something enough times you'll know what looks correct/incorrect and how to fix it

Don't mean to be a dick, but I think the after (bottom one) is worse. Just an overcomplicated mess of shapes, when you get better at something in design you should be able to make the shapes simpler and more attractive while still conveying the same idea.

When it comes to studying folds, keep it simple. Learn each different type of fold, how they are different from each other, and under what circumstance that type of fold is created. Focus on the form and good design of the folds, don't get lost in over-detailing. There's a good short+simple video on the basics of each fold type on Marco Bucci's youtube. Start there, and then just do studies from pinterest pics.
