Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

So the thing I'm trying to get better at is drawing faces because I suck the most at those.
What I do right now for practice is:
>Draw (very) basic construction for head
>Copy the rest as I look closely at the original image
>Move onto the next image/page when done
What I wanted to ask was, should I be re-drawing the same page several times in a row? Or is it better to just do what I'm doing and moving on when I'm done copying?

>> No.7022392

>>7022306
>Draw (very) basic construction for head
you're not currently utilizing this properly in 2 ways
1. you're not making or using guidelines that help with aligning the facial features, so for example the face on the left has poor placement and proportion of the eyes, and the only line you've drawn to help deal with it is the vertical centerline.
2. you're not making a construction that feels the form of the head, this weakens your ability to find the front plane and to find the correct perspective for the eyes
>What I wanted to ask was, should I be re-drawing the same page several times in a row? Or is it better to just do what I'm doing and moving on when I'm done copying?
you should try redlining yourself after each copy at least, identify what parts aren't right and hopefully how you can fix a few of them

A bit generic though but if that's what u like FUCK it just do it

Her left arm looks a bit weird and small, and maybe a bit dislocated from the shoulder. I would give that more attention. And the right arm looks better but a bit too smudged which tells me you are not confident in drawing the arms in general. It's a good opportunity to look up that subject.

The face looks very appealing to me, good job!

>2. you're not making a construction that feels the form of the head, this weakens your ability to find the front plane and to find the correct perspective for the eyes
That's a bit of an issue I've had trouble figuring out. Doing more intricate construction makes it harder for me to follow along with what's actually on the page.
Like doing a full rummisu head for construction for example, the cheek and chin of the original are so exaggerated that the construction only makes it harder to follow along with what's actually on the page, as the lines deviate so strongly from the construction.
Would just adding a horizontal centerline be enough you think? If not, what's a good way to do construction for studies like these?

you mean the coloring, it's gonna take some experimenting. they were painted onto transparent cells with light shining through them then being photographed. translating all those variables to digital is hard and i honestly haven't seen anyone do it well even with all their filter magic. stick to 80s/90s illustrations if you don't want to get filtered by ancient technology. still keep in mind they were painting with traditional media. also they had an obsession with high contrast and very saturated darks. also usually had 1-2 more shadow layers than modern anime. its easier to replicate modern anime because you basically have the same tools used to make them at your disposal.

Are there any databases or websites that have tons of anime references? Right now I'm looking for action poses but it could be anything like expressions, hair or whatever. I'm just assuming that at an animation studio, if the artist has forgotten what tropes are connected to a personality type, or what pose to choose for a confident person, they have an internal database with lots of references? There are few problems to fix.
1. Your lines are too choppy because your are focusing on them too much, just overdraw and clean after also if you have troubles just use smoothing there is absolutely no shame in it.

2.You are drawing lines.... draw volume that's what is most important, stop thinking about things just as lines or shapes instead focus on volume. If you are drawing tits for example then go watch some irl tits search on internet how they look anatomically and then draw.

i felt like the viewer looking slightly up at her makes more sense with what you have, so i made her arms and collar follow that perspective
the eye angles are a lot more subtle. they curve inwards just slightly more. if you do studies of kui's faces, you can get a better sense of how important those slight angles are for closed eye expressions
also notice the how the ear (headphone) position changes in relation to face angle. blocking that in makes it easier to see

If you care so much about making pieces and not "copying", why don't you to /alt/ or any other anime generals where people focus on making original illustrations? It's got a lot to do with value, like how the top eyelashes are always the darkest part for cute girls, for different characters they might be lighter. This also goes for the rest of the face, you want to keep the other features like nose and mouth fairly light, don't let the face get too dense apart from the eyes, you should look up different ways to draw the features and pick the ones you like most, besides that you should use a cute ratio like small chin high mouth big forehead etc

If you don't like to do 1:1 copies that's fair and that you're attempted an original drawing is a very good thing. I'm not telling you to change that. What I meant to convey was more in the realm that having inspirations and using references is necessary if you want to learn more about what's wrong with your art and in what kind of direction you want to stirr it towards.

I am mere doodler with no real study, but I'm taking an elective drawing course at uni just for fun. It's all online so kind of unstructured, the guy just puts out a few lectures a week and trusts you to go at your own pace and upload whatever whenever. Kinda cool I guess, it forces the class to interact so it's kinda like /beg/ but everyone sucks more. My gf thinks it's cool though, she wants to try this specific class but can't because enrolling is a pain in the ass. Does anyone know of something similar I can just buy her and I a seat in? I'm not worried about it being an atelier course, I think she just wants to noodle and doodle and pretend it's serious because it's a class. Something from NMA maybe? Is there a lot of interactability in their classes or it's just watch video and draw thing?

This, draw more to speed up your process little by little. It's like cooking something new where you take your time following the recipe and it tastes fine, then you memorize it, change the recipe a bit, finish faster and it tastes better but you still have to let it cook depending on what you're doing.
Also try not worrying about small details when drawing pieces, I practice whatever nitpicks and errors I notice in my art after I finish even if it hurts. You can always come back to them later and do redraws.

nigga you draw like day 1 begs, and the loomis head method is meant to teach you how to draw a face/head with a simple planes, aka the meme ball, once you are able to place the face features effortlessly you modify the meme ball to your prefered animei features, but at that point you problaby wont need any landmarks and most likely you will eyeball everything and still get it right.

as opposite to? kek. but if what im getting is that you don't know how to draw realistic faces, you don't have to but it's going to be way harder to understand stylized anime faces since they can vary tremendously between styles you will need to be a maxxed constructionfag to decode those. if anything just study the face planes from anime dolls/figmas? that would be easier but you still need to take into account the stylization part.

>> No.7030276

Well, non-humans. Animals and Pokemon and kemono and stuff. I like round, cute things, so I don't have much of a foundation in realistic styles, that's true. Faces just don't make sense to me when I'm drawing them. I'm starting to think it's less of a skill issue and more of a brain issue. I think I'm just retarded.
Thanks anyways, anon. I'll keep trying.

i don't say this to crab you , but you are probably worse than what you actually think, when it comes to realistic faces is easier to see the errors because your brain is used to the human face proportions, when you draw stylized faces where you have hardly or little knowledge compared to the realisctic faces is harder for your brain to know if its ''correct'' or not, so think it looks better than what it actually is.

pic related, you see /beg/s drawing like the top pic on a daily basis and you'd think they could tell is pretty fucked up yet they think it's fine. until compare the drawings with a more skilled picture then the differece is obvious to them but for everyone it always has been.
So the reason you have problems drawing anime faces is because you have very little knowledge on the way i'ts drawn, also anime faces in general.

>>7030285

You're right and wrong. I think I am worse than maybe I'm letting on. I don't have any delusions of being "good", but I'm not bottom of the barrel. I won't shit up the thread with D&D/furry shit, but just so I'm not talking out of my ass: https://files.catbox.moe/h6g29u.jpg (it's just a character drawing, nothing nsfw).

I grew up with anime, and I try to use that style as a basis for other types of heads I draw. Kemono, in particular, is just anime with a snout. I'm only saying this to express that while you're right in that I'm not as good as I'd like myself to be, I'm not unfamiliar with anime faces. It's just that I don't have a method for drawing them intuitively. I haven't had anything "click" yet, and I'm frustrated because nothing seems to work for me. I was hoping for more insight in regards to that. I find a lot of modern anime girl pictures very beautiful (like anon's swimsuit pic above), and that's what I'm trying to learn.

If the only solution is to sit down and grind out Loomis heads, or whatever, despite what some anons are saying, I guess I'll do that. I'll try and seek advice when I have something more substantial to offer.

I already read Loomis ages ago, and besides Loomis only really comes down to having a sphere/box to understand the basic planes and have lines for where you want features to be. People call it "Loomis" by habit but it's just common sense/basic perspective & construction, you don't need to open some ancient book to get that.

What I'm conveying is that for a lot of stylized styles out there (not all), constructing the face this way ends up being detrimental because it's more about shape design than actual 3D accuracy.

Glad to see fellow Loomis chads here. Have fun drawing with your pen /a/non.

They are seething because they are permabegs still. The fact that one of them is Gobsoy Sloyer fan just tells you everything of their taste.

Yes, like that. Just don't use that horrible soft brush anymore.
Also watch this please: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYaWu2zgEBI it's very relevant to what you're going through right now.

thank you for your continued interested in my construction practice.

>the planes of face are missing in some on them
They're missing in all of them. Most of the lines are proportion measurements on a nice simple form, they're explicitly not describing a complex one.
I'm not sure what to make of the redline or text. Taste in aspect ratio aside, there's no disagreement on what goes where. A horizontal squish lines up the corners which were the goal of the construction.
If you want to say a pencil rough of a face the size of my thumb is crudely done compared to a big crisp digital drawing, I can only agree.

the painting on the left are just to show the planes of the face, the lines across the face of your drawing were meant to show that it looks flat. the point was to show you the planes so when you draw you imply these forms with your drawing, a lot of them have the eyes sat on a flat line like the lines i trace over your drawing, instead of showing that curvature like the purple lines on my drawing and the blue lines on the ref, your drawings are missing lots of these features making your faces look flat, is not a matter of being complex or adding more bloat to make it look anime, these are basic fundamentals and can be symplified fairly easy but also very easy to miss if you don't know what are you looking for, that's why i used 3 different light sources to show the planes of the face that you should have in mind when you draw in 2D.

I agree with the general thrust of the advice, these are good things to think about. I just can't tell what more you want from me when you hand back a redraw that is narrower, but otherwise agrees on the angle and placement of every corner that was constructed.
The mystery deepens the more I look at it. Did you just think I was placing things correctly but for the wrong reasons, or by accident? I can't really tell.
