>How do you build a following in the fandom?
I'm posting on FA, Twatter and Plebbit relevant subs like r/furry and r/yiff and so far I have less than a 100 followers if I put them all together.
My art isn't the best but it isn't mediocre either, just average when compared to what is out there.
So, how ? Whose dick do I suck? Kek

Drawing porn or fanart are usually the easiest ways to get followers. It's hard for people to find your art if you only draw OC's

>> No.7020947

>>7020905
from what Ive noticed, gaining popularity usually comes down to 3 main things:
1. your art is technically impressive, with good composition, gesture, rendering, linework, etc
2. your art tells a story, invokes emotion or has a relatable element
3. sex appeal
gotta have at least one or more of these or else there's very little reason for people to care about your artwork

>> No.7020950

>>7020947
oh yeah and fan art does half the work of storytelling for you which makes it a lot easier for people to get invested in your art. Just add your own little twist and boom, viral drawing. Probably

>> No.7021014

>>7020905
>>7020947

Adding to this, it helps to have some social media literacy. Obviously small stuff like "don't post at 2a.m", but just overall knowledge of where you're posting and who's looking.

> FA is dogshit for growing a following. The site is so diluted with ads and the tagging is atrocious. You only get a small window in the front page for new people to see you, after that your post might as well not even exist. Don't expect much from FA.

> Reddit is ok. You can get a lot of engagement if the post is good but only for a brief amount of time, once the post is dead it's dead. People don't really follow "you" as much as they follow subreddits so its hard to extract anything from it. Its especially hard on really broad subreddits like r/yiff and r/furry, maybe try targeting something more specific?

> Despite everything, Twitter is still really good. At first its like shouting into the void but once you get even a small following it snowballs from there. Retweeting is really powerful, you should use it a lot. And yeah, mutualism and sucking up to bigger accounts does help.

One thing I'll add though, treat your Twitter account like an actual artist and not some personal thing. People will not follow you, let alone realize that you're an artist, if all your stuff is buried under a bunch of memes and rants.

Speaking as someone who posted 10-20 arts on there and got literally like 2 followers, it feels like shouting into the void. Even with how trash FA's system is, I got like 15 followers there for the same arts. 20 on Bluesky.
I heard that Elon made porn show up less, so maybe it's good if you already have some following, but if you're small, it's literally just the void.

I'd say you need more social media stamina. I know how to post and work social media, I just don't have the fucking energy to do it constantly across like four different platforms, or more. Then there's the need to separate nsfw from sfw, subject from subject (I'm plagued by not really wanting to draw only one thing, which means my work doesn't attract any singular community)...It's just too much.

I would suggest trying some with a lash in the middle as well, and maybe some with all the lashes going the same direction instead of always pointing straight out from the center.

The latter. I go through a lot of roughs before the "clean" rough. And for this particular piece I wanted the look of a finished pencil piece so I put in more effort than usual and treated the clean rough as if it were lineart. And I usually separate sections of the lineart into different layers. Helps make edits easier (There were a LOT here) but can also make things more convoluted.

>I'm just not sure how it's transferrable to making art myself when all I'm conditioning myself to do is essentially trace without actually tracing
I usually do that, specially when I am drawing the OC of someone else, so I say there's nothing bad doing it by eye, specially if you're confident that you're able to capture what makes an art style work. I have studied manga(Yukimura, Miura, CLAMP), western cartoons(Ennis, Disney and MLP) and furry(Comet, Jaynaylor, Iskra etc) and I've done it all by eye.
As for transferrable to your art style, believe it or not, most of the muscle anatomy I've learned comes from observing and learning from Miura and Yukimura's art, so yes you can and will improve by "mind tracing" someone else's homework.

>Am I supposed to just look at art I like and recreate it myself?
>Do I recreate it as exactly as possible or do my own thing?
Its a good step to recreate the style of others, specially if you liked it but I've to say that you don't have to recreate it as crisp as it is, specially on the first try.
Anyway, I hope that my rambling helps(if it does). In the meanwhile, just draw famalanon and everything will grow from that.

Attempt at full body... I feel like the legs fucked me up big time.

>> No.7026166

>>7026162
It looks like you combined her feet with her forelegs. Digitigrade legs were meant for quadrupeds, so you need to do some studying to figure out how to apply that anatomy to a biped without it looking wonky. It helps to study animal legs as well, or just legs in general since mammalian skeletons are all created from the same blueprint. You can divide them into a few parts, which sometimes go by slightly different names, but they're all anatomically equivalent, which are: the pelvis; the hind quarters to the knee; the foreleg to the ankle; and the foot. If you learn how those are all connected, and their (relative) proportions, it should make putting them down on paper a bit easier. You don't need to know all the muscles and stuff at first, but knowing that legs are essentially three connections might make them make more sense in your head.

>> No.7026169

>>7026166
HMPH alright I pretty much dove into that with minimal knowledge on how to draw animal-legs, but it felt really weird giving a character with extremely-thick thighs such tiny lower-legs, which is why I gravitated towards trying to compensate by combining her feet with her forelegs.

I'm gonna sleep on this and try to redo that tomorrow.
Thanks for the help, anon!!!

How do you you all come up with ideas for what to draw?
Embarking on this art journey alone, it's really hard to keep coming up with things.

>> No.7026261

It's a contentious topic because somw people are intrinsically gifted with creativity more so than others, as opposed to technical skill. It's very hard to ask those people what gives them ideas, because how do you really answer someone's question asking you how to be more creative?
The best artistic advice I could give to anyone is to draw influences from every source you can. And not even furries specifically, I mean movies, music, video games, nature... everything. And don't be afraid of being eccentric or trying new things. A lot of the time that's what blocks you from creating new ideas in the first place.

Hey, hey! Let's calm down, now! Calm right fuckin' down!
Right, let's see what we're working with. Hmm... well then, it would help if you could give some sort of reference as to what you're working towards with your art. From what you're doing here, it looks like you're aiming for a little bit more of a sketched, messier style. And that's cool! Don't get me wrong, it looks good. But the thing I would work on if I were you would be defining shades within the black, because right now it looks a little bit too messy, if you know what I mean. Like look how there's all these random white spots all over her fur and how the shades aren't really consistent with anything, it looks like a crayon drawing. Now, if you were able to focus those lighter/darker spots better like how you did to outline the nose, it would be a bit better I think. I'm not a art master though, so take my words with a grain of salt, haha!
Oh, and another thing would be to see if you can change the brush width for smaller details like the whiskers. Or at least taper them off, just because it looks a bit sloppy when they are the same width as every other line on the drawing.
Hope this helps, Anon! Or if not, I guess try to have a good day!

It's mostly practice. I see drawing from imagination the same as drawing your "go-to" sketches, the things that you usually draw. The more times that you draw something. The image in your head gets clearer, and you can reproduce it more easily and eventually without the need for reference. Now, this is coming from someone that has a very simple style and draws the same thing over and over, so it is far easier for me than for someone that's trying to draw something more complex like porn, a difficult pose or a weird perspective.

Using the symmetry tool doesn't make this look unnatural, does it? I can't freehand symmetry for the life of me. I guess I could go over it again to get a more "natural" look. I find I struggle the most with drawing when I try to do everything from imagination, so I'm just trying to have fun with it right now and use whatever tools I need to to make the product.

>>7032700
The head looks a lot fuzzier, which I guess is because of the brush changes you mentioned. I like it though. I think that it doesn't look too much muddy because of the Lab, not the 16bit.

16bit should have much smoother gradation, but it weights double.

In RGB, the average of 2 opposite colors is grey, unlike Lab. That's why it looks less muddy.

-

I suggest to you to just use Lab. If you need more blending modes, keep using RGB, but add a 3rd color in the middle of a gradation of 2 opposite colors

Aside from the linework (which you’ll improve on with mileage) was the head shape. One side seemed to be straying more than the other. Try flipping the canvas and doing minor adjustments to help make the face more symmetrical.

imo, it can be very obvious and off-putting if the figure is perfectly mirrored because that's unnatural. It's still a valuable tool to use to save time and effort, but I think that if you do use it you should do something to offset the symmetry while still keeping the overall balance of the composition. picrel is an example
