If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

anonbros what would you consider makes an illustration be more appealable for you between these 3:

Composition, proper anatomy, dynamic pose?

Any book or video recommendations for fabric and/or hair? Sometimes I see people that are pretty bad with faces, but good at clothes and hair, and it frustrates me a bit, since faces are probably the one thing I'm 'sort of' decent with, and it feels like it should be the easiest bit.

Pawel, not like this...
I think understanding of the form is there, but there is little appeal. some advice for begs:
1. dont draw what you want until you can impress people (not friends and family) with stuff they want. if you draw what you want and fail, it will demotivate you harder than anything. especially if you've been working hard to get to that point.
2. just draw means draw what you've practiced a few times to get it right intuitively instead of just going back to fundies right away when you get it wrong.
3. its better to draw then practice than practice then draw. don't practice fundies in isolation. drawing human muscles for a week then working on a painting of a mountain means you wasted a week. practice what you need when you need it.
4. if there is an art style you're going after, practice from day one in that art style and how people who draw that art style practiced. someone recommending you vilpu? look at vilpu's art. do you like drawing obese western women? no? then don't waste time with vilpu. which leads me to my next point.

7013080

>>7013078
5. look at the art of anyone who is teaching you art and only learn from them if you would like to draw like them. if someone recommends you a world renowned artist's course where that artist paints muscular men fighting bears, guess what, you're only learning how to paint muscular men fighting bears. the fundies can be taught by anyone, the methods of deploying those fundies changes from person to person, along with theory. what you are trying to learn are methods and theory, so learn them from brains that draw what you want to draw. The fundies have mostly been here for 500 years, no one is gonna teach the core principles in a magical way.
6. drawing is learning, learning a skill is a struggle. our will to struggle runs on a tank of willpower. if other things in life are draining your will, you will have little to fuel your struggle with climbing the mountain that is art. this is the same for all skills. if your life is miserable, you won't have the will to struggle because just being alive is struggling enough. this is why kids with bad childhoods do bad at schoolwork even if later in life it's shown they have high iqs. get a foundation first before you draw. either friends, forms of leisure, love (gl lol) or anything that is a comfort zone. drawing has its ups and downs and when the downs come if you have nothing to fall back on you will suffer, and might even quit drawing.

you really want to draw a dragon sieging a town from the sky. you really want to do this. you've practiced drawing towns, perspective, dragons, fire, and clouds. now, you havent drawn anything this complex before, and you're banking all your hard work on this drawing that you have in your head. you know how much emotional investment you've put into art, are you ready to hurt yourself without testing the waters first? ever heard the saying "better safe than sorry"? simply attempt less complex things that other people (yes, fandom is a good choice) want so you aren't too emotionally invested into it. then draw even more complex things that other people want. then when you get to a point where you realize you've drawn something better than what you expected to draw for yourself on the best outcome you can know safely that you can tackle this self-esteem project without an all or nothing attitude that could literally break you.

Those aren't really gesture drawings but rather rapid sketches. Don't focus on the silhouette, focus on forces, relaxation and tension of the body and use varying curvature and angles to express them. Find the parts of the body that are compressing, stretching, holding weight etc. and notice what kind of shapes you get, then transfer them to a simple drawing. You could even start out by tracing, so that you don't have to worry about proportions, and tasteful exaggeration is a good thing.

I tried redrawing Artemis from Hades to look more feminine. All my friends said my new version is "hideously ugly" and "looks like a negress", but they refuse to be more specific about what's wrong with it. I must be blind or retarded because I can't figure out what the problem is.

I read drawing on the right side of the brain a while ago, but I'll give that one a read. As long as it's not another box drawing hell...
>>7013397
Yeah, that's the part of gesture drawing that kinda confuses me. If I focus too much on the force/feel, It looks flat and stick-figurey, if I focus too much on the form, I just draw the silhouette. It's hard to find that middle ground in my head where I focus both on how it looks and feels at the same time. Part of why I ended up sketching was I didn't know what to do with the whole 2 minutes per pose I was given lol
>>7013422
>You should be thinking more about the solid forms
I really wanted to, but I thought they whole point of gesture was to avoid drawing the solid forms? Gesture I thought was like the whooshey feely chaotic part of drawing that you later try to fix with solid forms, isn't it?
>Expectedly, the one time you tried to shade something to show it has 3 dimensional form were the massive tits on the 2nd to last row
Legit all I want to draw is big anime tiddies lol

I like to break these into two separate steps. Finish the gesture, then add the structure. Don't worry about not finishing on time, you'll get there with practice.

For the first 10-30 seconds, sure.
Keep in mind the precise definition of "gesture" is a complete shitshow, but if you're going for Vilppu's approach then you go right into developing big simple volumes, defining some of the corners of the forms, and showing what comes in front of what.
Ideally you deal with proportion and perspective at the same time, but it's a lot going on at once and those things are way down the line behind the initial gesture and the sense of volume.

nothing is good or bad but it has its trade offs, basically you can't divorce the hue from the first stages of the painting and add it them later and achieve the same results, the order of operations alter the end product. The main issues are
1. lightness perception of the human eye
2. grayscale gradients (e.g. soft edges) turn into a mushy mess

Thats why I recommended the hornung's book first because it digs in the hue perception problem (for example the lightness perception difference between yellow and blue)

this is the marco bucci video I was talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJitss58XKc

try both, don't be discourage, with each painting you will learn something new.

you could start with the right in terms of improvements on the gesturing part, u seem to take lots of time with it when the key is speed and precision in that speed which you lack due to you trying to make it all chibi and shit. try loomis, like actually, people meme it but it truly does wonders and you could use it with the white figures especially also note that simple gesture work 24/7 will do more harm then good as it teaches the mind to avoid full body work and rendering to the point of deterring people from attempting rendering at all and not having any finished pieces to even present whether it be in other threads or in my necessary means like a portfolio. yyou need to decide between styles too, the meme of having to hardcore learn irl anatomy and shit is only half a meme but holds some truth but only really depends on how chibi or anime esque youre going. overall, youre ngmi

In the end what matters is less that you got fundies and more that you can express an original idea because theres millions of artists spamming their shit everywhere to the point that pretty girl pic #10000 is cheap to worthless unless its of the new epic trending pop culture character which only this lasts until all the twitter artists make their fanart and it goes back to being cheap, which is why artists all go on about their "style" which is just their brand as an artificial way to make their art seem more scarce, but so many force their epic "style" and if its not genuine then its just cringe
If any advice I have its to remember to have fun and not think too much about whether other people like your art as much as you like doing it and think less about whats trending and more about exploring new territory

Fun With a Pencil teaches you about forms, construction, a little bit of perspective and figure drawing/anatomy. I would recommend Perspective Made Easy for a bit more perspective and Keys to Drawing to develop your observation skills. After those and when you can draw decent forms in perspective you can start on figure drawing, if that is one of your goals. When people talk about Hampton, they mean his book or his anatomy videos. Michael Hampton is fine but you may prefer Steve Huston, Glenn Vilppu or Proko. All of them have videos on YouTube you can checkout and see who clicks with you. Figure drawing is quite complex so you'll need to learn from multiple instructors in the long run.

I've been struggling to learn to draw bodies for a while now. I've been tracing references from google images but it's just not working out and I don't feel like I'm actually learning anything from just tracing them.
Is this a good book for learning anatomy as a beg? Idk what else to do to improve.

I think the main issue is that her head is too vertically aligned when it should be tilted. The fingers are too straight when they should be curving around the ankles and you have too much of her left shoulder when most of it'll be obscured by her neck, which is too large compared to her chest. Overall, good work so far! These're super common mistakes so it's understandable.

Other suggestions would be to make it clear who she's looking at, and to not be afraid to make her expression uneven to convey emotion, since the face you have right now is a bit too neutral when I think you're trying to depict her being happy. Just remember that the collarbones connect to the shoulders and that little girls have little shoulders and you should be fine!

Anon, gesture drawing is just distilling the form into the simplest representation. Whatever helps you to capture action or proportions in set amount of time (helps you not fixate on small details) is a valid option. Also, when drawing figures it's easy to use flowy lines for dynamic poses, not so much for static (but you can also use any other preferred method for those).

Alrighty, so been drawing since late September last year, and here is my first from life study (I think?).

I feel I did a decent enough job with her head (Learnt how to use the Loomis Method recently), but her torso was a tad too long and her legs don't feel right. Also her left arm is too long and I can't for the life of me draw fingers well.

I wouldn't consider this as pixel art, its more like aliased art. Pixel art is one of those things that sadly should follow certain criteria because is by product of limitations, reduce your color palette to 16 (you can use more or less but the idea is to create limitations) or less, get more comfortable with screentones and dithering this.

tl:dr: You are using way too many colors, dithering allows you to "fake" colors. Also I don't like the moon, and the view doesnt makes sense between the top and bottom buildings (unless they are containers...)

Pixel art is all about controlling your artwork down to the level of the individual pixel. This means not using fancy brushes, gradients or transparencies in your work. While this does tend to reduce the number of colors in a typical piece, the number of colors used is more a practical and stylistic consideration than anything like a hard limit.

Now if you are trying to emulate the style of a certain old system you can, and it can be great fun. However to do this you might as well use the specific color palette and resolution of the system you want to emulate. Simply reducing yourself to a small number of colors doesn't really do much to emulate that old style of pixel art.

Sure you make good points, but the shortest and easiest advice was to limit the color pallete, with just this constraint you have to make tons of decisions that will let to better results.

Of course just using fewer colors won't make pixel art, there are many other considerations, abstraction, sprite size, tiling, dithering algorithms, etc. But I thought limiting colors and study good sprites would be more intuitive and shorter than "practice your dith gradation" or "learn how draw primitive shapes in multiple ways".

Solid resource for skeletal proportions in general. It says ribcage is as wide as 1.25 heads, so approximately the length of the head+neck.

Ah, Bridgman. More suited for intermediate artists in my opinion, there is a lot of interpretation you have to do to decipher his sloppy drawings. Modern anatomy and figure drawings books will be a lot easier to study from.
Constructive Anatomy is fine. Most use Complete Guide to Drawing from Life, which is complication of most of his stuff.

This video explains why his drawings are so sloppy.

Complete and utter beginner and looking for instructions after reading the sticky.
I tried reading drawing from the right side of the brain and i simply couldn't get into it. I was also looking into keys to drawing and The Art and Science of Drawing. Should i stick to those two and then try DftRS or just stick to any particular book?
I was also wondering if Draw a Box could be good for improving my line quality since i really like felt tip pens and want to work with mostly inks, I've read people who only do that shit end up never improving so is there a recommended balance between both?

>i simply couldn't get into it
What does that even mean?
>Draw a Box could be good for improving my line quality
The first few lessons go over some line quality exercises, the wasting your time part is probably the 250 boxes. In the end the more you draw the more comfortable your pen handling will be.

Welcome, fren

Keys to Drawing, Eviston’s beg course, Proko’s beg course, and Betty Edwards are all different ways of learning the same thing: how to see. You gotta draw what you actually see instead of what you think you see. That’s step zero. They all teach observational accuracy. Eviston, Proko, and KtD (to a lesser extent) also teach some shading, forms and volumes, perspective, and some other stuff. Proko’s beg course is probably most complete/well-rounded, but, like I said, step 0 is learning to see and they all teach that. Brent Eviston or KtD or Proko will work. I’d try all of them to test, and stick with the one you learn from best. Once you’re done with that, you can move on and don’t really need to do do any of the others. (Proko’s fundies course might be worth trying if you do one of the others, though. It covers lots of ground.) You could also try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtd6uwNFl9k&list=PLMXbAPr21di-Ox-dmDwL2riWedei1dn9S which is very thorough, and free (legally). Anyway, you don’t need to do DOtRS if you’ve done one of the others.
>I was also wondering if Draw a Box could be good for improving my line quality
Yes. The first few lessons of DAB are also pretty good at brute-forcing the ability to feel the form. It’s basically an autistic version of Dynamic Sketching, only free.
>since i really like felt tip pens and want to work with mostly inks, I've read people who only do that shit end up never improving so is there a recommended balance between both?
Can’t help you there, I mostly do digital and rarely ballpoint or pencils. Sorry.

Before I started drawing?

Well frankly my motor skills were non existant which is the first issue, so I spent a good while building up my motor skills and my observation skills (obviously still not quite there yet but trust me, way better than they were in late September).

So I was mainly doing studies of Burne Hogarth drawings and learning how to actually hold a pen.

Now I can do that, that study I did as flawed as it was genuinely took me less than 20-30 minutes to do, when before hand it would have taken me ages (and it would have looked worse).

One major issue I have is due to a certain someone I knew (who was ruined by this flaw I am about to mention) his perfectionism actually damaged him badly and he always advised that I should just "not spend too much time on most things" to avoid essentially stagnating and fixating for too long, as a result not really learning properly or burning out.
So I do tend to rush sometimes and leave errors in which I would have otherwise noticed.

Could I have a link to the Vilppu drawing manual? I have the videos but not the book.

you're like a blue-pilled npc, who needs a coherent textbook to handhold them through a complex skill.
