When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.

you should disable it already, it should not be part of the finished post. The viewer should be able to see what you painted without sketch lines. For us, it is distracting.

As for the drawing you posted, you went waaay overboard with that dark brown brush (for example her belly). These dark lines should be thin and subtle. Pick a color next to that one and use it to cut those parts to thin lines. Thats what im thinking.

How do I start? Please don't say just draw, I'm literally retarded.

I feel like if I try to learn gesture and anatomy then I don't have form down, if I try to learn form I don't have construction down, construction is held back by perspective, perspective by composition and composition by construction and form.

It feels like I'm trying to learn five things at once, I've read the guide and none of it seems to stick. Am I just fucked?

Pic related, gave up half way through a bob ross paint by numbers and threw my red bull at the wall.

Start by copying. I think you already have some of the basic down if you can follow bob ross that much. Do a lot of live drawing but don't mindless copy. Write notes on things you don't understand and seek answer from an experienced artist or just ask on forum somewhere reddit or even this god forsaken place. As you copy, just like how you feel you actually are learning multiple things at once.

Also learning art is not linear. You'll be hitting walls and sometimes the only thing to break that wall is to go back to basic. There will be things you missed along the way that's just how human brain works. Good luck with your art journey anon. Well, more like good luck to all of us. We all fucking need it.

LOL, nonsense. You don't have to know jackshit about composition to draw a box. Just learn the very basics of perspective, basic forms if you want to learn "academically".

But I have no idea how all this is related to a paint by numbers thing. Just have more patience, you retard. And post an actual drawing so people can judge your abilities.

Bob ross was created by the CIA to keep bored housewives locked up at home painting, it's the tiktok of art even though his paintings are very good, he makes it foolproof.

>>7007219

good luck, I think 1 or 2, 15 minute photo ref redraws should be good to get you going. Keep that up and try to draw what you see rather than what you think should be there. tried to make some sort of dystopian city. I feel I fucked up. I don't know how but it just ended up pretty bad. Tried to salvage it but ended up with too much paint on the brush, I'm really struggling with painting opaquely and in black and white, my values are way off and I can't control my brush and I end up losing a lot of details that the sketch had. How should I approach painting in opaque? I think I did things in the wrong order, should I do a wash first to kill the whites, then do the big shapes and work my way down in size?

And the perspective is messed up too.

Perspective and feeling the form are the two biggest issues. The thing on/over his head looks like a flat 2d cutout. Try rotating forms and doing the organic form exercise from DAB or Dynamic Sketching

I’d postpone learning to render for now, and focus on improving your figure drawing and 3d forms. Once you have a stronger grasp of formt, learn about simplifying values, and hard vs soft edges and cast vs form shadows. (Aka shadow mapping.) Your lines and hatching are very impressive, you’ll probably become an incredible inker

Do a brush tip similar to one used for pencil under a grey scale template. Use with black, grey, and white, then save that as registered material. Duplicate a good pencil brush, go under the tools settings, customize it how you want with pressure and all. Change the sub color to a color you want, main as black or dark gray. See if that works.

Thanks, fren! That’s very motivating to hear, I appreciate it.
>>7007916
I think you need to find specific examples of actual drawings showcasing the exact effect you’re talking about. And if you can’t find any, it’s probably a sign. I wouldn’t worry about brushes or effects or anything like that until you’re already pretty good. Also, I’m pretty retarded so I’m personally guilty of a LOT of “procrastination by preparation” and I rarely notice it unless someone points it out to me. Is it possible you’re subconsciously focusing on this to put off drawing? In any case, if you can’t figure it out, I wouldn’t sweat it.
>>7007932
Have you done anything to specifically train observational drawing skills? Like Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain, or Eviston’s course, or Dorian Iten, or Krenz or something? I think doing a little more of that would help you a lot.

I have spent so much time drawing on the same exact tablet that it unfortunately has now become very scratched and difficult to see through (in this one very specific spot), but I cannot deviate from this position when I am drawing without experiencing a lot of pain.

(My setup is specific to my overuse injuries)

Thus, I have no choice but to draw with this gigantic blurry spot right in the middle of the screen which greatly hampers my ability to copy things accurately, so I have to compensate by drawing even more than I would have otherwise.

And I can’t afford shit, so this is my only shot at making it.

If I’m still alive by then, I’ll post better copies on a better tablet.

(And hell even trad irritates the shit out of my forearms because of the friction of the pencil ‒ my hands / arms are ruined from drawing, but digital is the only one where I can still somewhat crank shit out on a daily basis without too much pain)

Probably also why everything I draw looks so schizophrenic

I can probably also look forward to being blind later in life, but I try to just focus on drawing (which I can’t though, because of the blurry spot, hahaha)

I promise I’ll make /ic/ proud one day.

Drawing boxes only helps you to make straight lines and establish space. You'd be better off reading/watching material for perspective, and draw various boxes at different angles in a perspective grid. But really, you should always branch out and do something creative. Your boxes are getting worse because you have no direction, you're just drawing lines without meaning to make a "box" as you spiral into madness. There is literally no reason to draw 100 boxes unless each box relates to another, and just drawing one box is equally pointless.

Kind of a weird ask, but are there any artists who have done highly detailed renderings of sand waves? I'm trying to figure out how it would even look to draw and render an oceanlike wave of fine particulates, I'm not sure what the balance between form and detail should be (plus I'm really bad at drawing waves)

Make her look at something. If she's not looking at anything make her look at the viewer. Looks way way better than looking at the void.
Both legs need more work. Regarding the lifted leg, the upper part of the leg needs to end closer to the knee. Also that shape needs a bit of work overall. I get it since you don't look at knees on the regular, but look up some pose with the leg in that same position

I would also make her hips wider, the ribcage a bit more noticeable, and exaggerate the pose a bit, but thats just me,

Despite skimming through the total amount of hours i've put into drawing is probably below 100 which is just shameful beyond belief.

Yes.
I work but my hours are lax and i have no other responsibilities. I've got like 10+ hours of free time on my hands each day every day.
I usually "schedule" it for afternoon and then decide its too late for drawing and i'm tired and and and etc.
I guess i gotta try it once more and just see it through.

Never under any circumstance should you trace.
You should use a reference, you can overlay your work to check yourself, but you should never draw over an image. There is absolutely no benefit to doing this, you aren't training your eye or your muscles and you aren't learning anything.
Learn anatomy, learn perspective, don't shade with black- learn how colors behave in a real environment. Do not take short cuts, keep grinding, and take time to draw for yourself, for fun and personal enjoyment, not to broadcast a message with a poorly made drawing- you made a meme by tracing.

not bad, it's good that you're drawing the entire body with each one. i think you could try to include more interior lines that define the forms or add to the flow/gesture of the figure, like the latissimus dorsi when the arms are raised. playing around with the whole straights v curves concept could help add some more dynamism too, especially when a limb is thrust forward or backward like in this drawing.
it's good that you're including cross contour lines to indicate which direction a limb is going, but the construction still feels a little technical... i would check out the book "Drawn to Life (Vol 1)" by Walt Stanchfield for a more "organic" approach to gesture drawing

I'm afraid I thought of that too, the problem is that I have to draw at an incline for my hands / arms to not hurt too much, but if I put a screenless tablet onto the incline, I have to look up at the monitor screen, which ends up destroying my neck after a few minutes

I don't why that combination causes this, but it's possibly from wrestling during my younger days; we would be doing bridges and all types of crazy exercises / maneuvers using our necks

(hence the screen-tablet being on the incline in the picture - my neck in that position hurts less for whatever reason)

Huh I didn't notice, neat. I usually repost if something got no attention. There are so many people needing critiques that art gets stepped over a lot.

>Is this your original work? What is the story behind these characters?
Well I did draw it without references or anything but no the characters are not mine. If you haven't watched the amazing digital circus yet PLEASE do so it will either change your life or at the very least entertain you for 30 minutes.

Mostly just drawing from observation, and gradually forming my own internal rules such as eye spacing, nose length etc etc etc. when I was doing my black and white portraits I was gradually also adding rules for where certain values do what. Now I am trying to do that for colour I guess. Hope it makes sense feel free to ask any questions :)

take drawing as a meditation instead of a challenge to be surpassed and you will have a much better time

This is the equialent of some SJW black trans queer shit. I would tell you to draw something else, but you clearly lack any identity and imagination, so the best course is to give up. You are the trash of society.

I'm not good at folds but usually you want to follow your form with wrinkles. Keep in mind that there are tension points and lose points.
Tension points stretch fabric so it shouldn't make folds that much. Like boobs in your pic.

Yes it is! I was a drawfag for a while and being forced to draw fast made me learn how to properly pace myself. Usually if you spend too long on a single piece you'll start seeing things things that aren't actually wrong and starts fucking it up. Also here's what I'd change.

Thanks for the response. I've been studying tension and folds, but I'm having a hard time applying the principles to my reference. Yours certainly looks more natural, but she's wearing a football kit which is tight in some places and loose in others and kind of lopsided. I think I managed to get something looking okay by combining the reference and the "textbook". I guess me copying the reference might look off if I drew her pose slightly differently, now that I think about it.
