If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I was fortunate enough to get a full-ride scholarship to some shitty art school in the middle of nowhere back in 06'. Their illustration program was actually just a graphic design program in disguise and I became a graphic designer out of college. So my actual illustration skills are self taught too. 15+ years later I have a house, a wife, and two kids. I haven't made a dime from my illustrations, I just give them away to family and friends for free. My point? I have no experience or guidance in selling art. I do however have that amount of time of experience in marketing, and I can tell you as I've already said in this thread that marketing is the avenue to success in all artistic fields. It's good that you are making progress, and I advise you that if you're going to start publishing pieces begin to build a presence first and foremost. And no, that does not mean posting your /wip/ to 4chan. Even if it pains you to do so, enter the social media space. Post little Tiktoks of your process with quick edits, stream yourself drawing and make sure to talk to ANYONE that comes into chat, if you don't have any social skills it'll help you develop them. If you want to get metaphorical with it, you are the block of marble and you have to start carving out an identity from yourself. You will not make it if no one knows who you are. Simple as.

That being said, it's not as daunting as you think, and don't expect quick results. You are young, you have no one depending on you but yourself. Keep making progress, but start thinking about the business side of things before you disappoint yourself, get ahead of it and you'll find success.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

I should really be doing Bridgman studies... This design is like an autistic sonic OC and I can’t believe it’s an actual thing. It’s so busy and edgy and goofy that it’s looped around from cringe into kino. Anyway, here’s Russell Crowe. (Shamefully, I had partially trace his head because I couldn’t get a likeness for the life of me.)
>>7004020
Can’t really read this from the thumbnail. With such a busy design, that’s not surprising. The bike is also hard to read even zoomed in. It sort of looks like the rear wheel is in a different perspective from the rest of the bike. Almost like the motorcycle is in two different halves, one in front and one behind the girl’s leg. The front wheel seems not to match the front fork perspective. Maybe her butt cheek closest to us should be a lil bigger. Overall very good, ambitious. They seem to be placed in the same scene with the same light, so you’re improving. Good job!

This is the effect that op is trying to achieve, which works well considering he understands how the pelvic bone and leg can be separated into large shapes that fit into eachother like puzzle pieces. I suck at shading though and can't control the amount, you can see it is too dark in some areas. Maybe I need a new digital pencil setting. I also didn't go for speed here so maybe need to set something like a 30 min timer. Should I continue with anatomy and muscles or move onto hands, feet, face?

doesn't really make much difference. biggest downside to starting digital is you might develop a bad habit of using undo too much and have shit line confidence as a result. trad, to some degree, forces you to accept mistakes and move on rather than redraw the same line 47 times until every pixel is exactly where you want it.

just research equipment so you don't get something that ends up making you hate drawing, like a pen tablet that's too small or one that won't map to your monitor resolution, or a pen tablet in general (half joking, some people prefer pen tablets but for some the disconnect between what your hand is doing and where your eye is looking is too much when you're just starting out)

I've only ever used a kindle or my phone to do any fooling around with digital art on a screened device. Compared to my screenless, it was awful. I'm sure you have more surface area on the big screened drawing tablets to keep from your hand constantly being in the way, but little things like that are irritating. There was also the matter of wanting to accidentally rest my hand on the tablet and making accidental marks all over everything. The screenless is a pain because of the connection port soldering being crap, and it took a minute to get used to, but I like it more. I've got hotkeys that I refuse to set up, and that pen has buttons I've turned off (and shit a collective business plaza every time I accidentally click them). Screenless has been nice though.

Like I said, try bringing this closer to a finish. Then you’ll be able to get better feedback. Her far arm looks a bit short/small. The gesture overall looks okay, I guess. It’s like asking for feedback on a house when you only have the foundation laid. There’s no house to critique.

I don’t remember. Like 4 hours all together maybe? I did the top half and then I spent the rest of that day’s drawing time abe all of yesterday’s drawing time and most of today’s on pic related and on a different drawing. I’m trying to do more non-study stuff so that I
1. Don’t get burned out and quit for two years again
2. Actually put stuff to use and incorporate what I’m learning into doing actual drawings
3. Try to have fun with my pencil and just draw
Doing copies of Morpho and Hampton was a lot easier and faster because their drawings are far less cryptic and much easier to read than Bridgman, and I wasn’t doing a memory drawing of each one. The memory ones make it way harder. I was much more selective with the memory and imagination drawings while doing Hampton and Morpho, only redrawing plates that I felt held key ideas. (Like the forearm muscles from Morpho Simplified Forms.)
If I weren’t doing the Bridgman memory pass meme, this would go a lot faster. It also goes faster as you get practice doing the studies. So… basically what I’m saying is there isn’t a specific “right” amount of time to do a copy, if that’s what you’re wondering.

Here's two redlines, one more faithful to your drawing and one a little more radical. Most of the issues were just posing and perspective. Push your perspective and try to find better movement and silhouettes for your poses. Your anatomy is pretty good and I think for you it's just a matter of drawing more and training your eye to improve in that regard.

Also if character art is what you enjoy then don't worry about backgrounds right now.

It wasn't a good attempt on my part, so I don't know how useful this is, but in general, since this portrait is framed so closely, its easy to use its boarders and negative spaces to provide relative measurement of each features, paid attention to the top of the head relative to the top boarders, his cheeks to the left boarders, and the relative length of the lower left hand corner between that and the bottom tangent of the figure. After you get a good sense of where those edges were, you can start blocking out the figures, measure from the large shape to small shapes, keep in mind what each landmark is suppose to have its relative measurement with each other and seek it from your references, and then analyze the larger shaded areas and move from outside shape in. Although I must note that I am not as organized as some other artist so I tend to jump between area of interest one after another, but its good idea to get a general overall shading before shading in the details.

Also the reason I switch from a mechanical pencil to a regular one is because it is easier to take advantage of blunt area of the regular pencil to lay down large area of lighter shapes. The pencil itself is a regular number 2 or HB pencil.

Anon, I... I already did Betty Edwards in September, see?! FML, this is demoralizing to hear. I was trying to do analytical drawing in the figure picture rather than observational. If I wanted to, I could have just outlined the contours and be done with it but I wanted to start with the gesture and construction process instead. I'll be more measured in my next figure study and focus on proportion I suppose...

Oh, that looks great. Yeah, your observation is good enough that you don’t need to really worry about training that specifically before moving on. You have enough of a foundation here to move on.
>>7005887
Yep, way Way WAY better! Good job! Just keep practicing proportion and you’ll be all set. You should watch Hampton’s YouTube videos where he demonstrates how he goes through his drawing process. You’ll see that he doesn’t measure, and he exaggerates and “fixes” the gesture of the pose, but he also occasionally makes note of stuff like “okay the hips tilt like that and the edge of this comes to about the edge of the shoulder,” etc.

So it is still an analysis of the pose, just not a copy of the pose. I think the thing that messed you up in the first drawing was that you more or less tried to draw it more from imagination than by analyzing and reverse engineering the figure. You just need more mileage and practice to be able to do that. But good job applying Hampton to this, it came out pretty good.

It doesn’t match the loli proportions because the head size is slightly smaller relative to the body than a child’s would be, but it’s a genuinely good effort. You did improve some aspect of it, for example making her right (our left) leg less anemic. Great job of the forearm muscles, too.
>>7005907
Accurate observation is an important foundational first step, but you have to graduate beyond it to git gud.
>>7005919

>>7005997
A little blunt but he's right. Quit talking about drawing and start drawing. The more you spend talking and thinking about doing something the less you actually do it to the point that when you actually do draw, you look for anything else to do out of habit (like go on 4chan / talk about how you have no motivation to draw) because you aren't fully acclimated to sitting down, shutting up, and actually doing it. Whenever you catch yourself drifting away from drawing, reel yourself back in to the task at hand and apply your focus to it. If you want to run a marathon but have never run a mile in your life, then don't be surprised when you start feeling unmotivated and out of breath a quarter of a mile in. Set your expectations low; you'll enjoy the results better that way, feel more motivated to draw, and actually get somewhere. If your expectations are too high, you'll just burn yourself out and feel constantly stressed when you do actually draw, no matter how hard you focus. Also just as a disclaimer, expectations =/= goals. You can set lofty goals, but don't set your expectations up there with them. Part of the satisfaction comes from achieving more than you expected, driving you to go further.

I will rather not post. I don't want to have that excited feeling of waiting for others to reply to me. Seems like a wrong type of pleasure.

Fuck it, I will post. These are just bored doodles. I want to do a lot more of these, also partly to waste time like this instead of social media.

Most important ultragiga beginner cheat tip: thank me later for this, I dont have a girlfriend so feel free to imagine how. Here is the tip: Draw everything using straight lines, whenever you can.
See the pic I attached? You make curves into straights. And after that, if you really really need to, then you can make a more curvy line.
if you apply this it will literally make your drawings 2x better.

You did a near perfect work, move on to the next challenge.

ehh you shouldnt fall into consumerism, I spent a shitload of money on things I dont need. But I recently in fact bought a brush pen and I really recommend it. Much better for calligraphy than any other pen I have used.

you are treating drawing like an rpg, you cant grind out xp and gain a new spell, you have to have conscious effort in improvement.

i think i added the legs in a position where the torso would have to be more upright so I made her a little less hunched. i like this is better

tiny head, stiff arms, the arm on the left looks fatter than the arm on the right. scratchy lines. the leg on the left looks like it shrinks too much at the bottom (though i might just be nitpicking). aside from those things you're on the right track :)
