When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

As promised, I redrew it, this time with bigger hard brushes and tried some blending. This is my second attempt at drawing values and blending them digitally. It was actually a lot of fun. I like the result and the only thing that I strongly dislike is how lashes and shade on the left is blending together into one monolith color. But I only noticed it at the very end and honestly got tired for today and I am leaving this mistake. Maybe the choice of values is lacking, but I don't see it. So please shit on it so I could see my mistakes.

these are some pieces i check from last thread

1. the bg color is too dark, the face has a bad structure and there is no construction, for example if you take in consideration the eye placement the nose dosnt make sense, same for ear position, the shadow "lines" arent organic and seem like you put them at last just to feel the drawing.
Use construction a bit more, focuse on learning to measure features more than anything. hair didnt make sense to me so i change it a bit, i went for a total different style because if i stylize too much you would not be able to see the faults.

The second is not wrong, but you need to remove the idea that the shadows are a separate element, you put the soft shadow in a different color too and basically is just symbol drawing.
Try using shado as a guide instead of a separate element, use soft strokes and dont go for solid colors, i think hatching can work better but is a personal opinion

3. terrible anatomy. and is funny because the proportions are not that bad. learn more from real life, there is no problem with the size of the ass you did but an ass dosnt work like that and make no sense how the ass is sticking out of both legs. be less afraid of references.

4. This is a special case, your anatomy and proportions are good but the execution is bad, the lineart is too generic and hard, in top of that there are lines that make no sense at all and ruin the drawing, bellow the left tit, above the belly button, the left line at the belly that separate it from the leg and the fact that there is no hip and the armpit have a chunk of meat between the chest muscle and the armpit that make no sense because the armpit is bellow the chest muscle.
Pay more attention to these details because they ruin the whole appeal of the piece in general and make it look like beg when u actually have better knowledge.

My problem is this. The paintings I paint take a long time and they're pretty laborious and I end up with a pot boiler at the end of it. They're pretty and enjoyable to contemplate and there is some skill to it. It just takes such a long time though, for something that will end up being the best amateur oil painting in a charity shop. I can paint fast, and quickly, and moderné, but that's 'crap' then isn't it? I just don't get it anymore, at all. Do I persevere or wait for genius to be telegraphed from the Gods?

1. speed
From the photo I understand you're using traditional oils? Those always take forever to dry/process - did you try using any mediums that speed this up, or even a hairdryer if you gotta wait for one layer to dry before continuing?
Depending on trad paints/mediums you use, you may be able to shave off some time using shit like hairdryers, heaters, or trying out acrylics (dont cover oil with acryl lol) or guache + thickener mediums
Only other thing would be speed training which sucks even if you're self-disciplined
2. labor
No fix there, it is how it is

3. Charity shop feel
Is your pic how you present them? If you can, look up how artists from 1880s to 1930s? presented their works and rip off their drip.
Finishing/finalizing your physical paintings cost$$ and nice frames are expensive, but you can cheat and make as much as you can at home - raw frames + woodstain + some woodwax (and gold paint for inner edges). Make like 2 - 3 frames to look fancy as fuck and use them to showcase your stuff when making gallery photos.
Go to used shit shops, get some old but cool window drapes (cloth!) and use that for background drops when taking photos of your art. Generally speaking copy how guys did their shit back then, helps both present your art, and your own self feels here.
Creating this will always be time consuming unless you figure out a tech for quick-painting, so you may wanna try to work on presentation.

I got that, sucks af, only got a working mix of meds last year, turns out they legit help. If you can and you dont have any - get meds (takes up to a year to find a mix that will work for you though)

Also get a friend to draw with, helps kick-start it till it develops into a habit. Other than that, all you can do is this >>6998405 and "just redraw cool shit you saw online"

Alternatively (if you're still reading) - depending on your autism and such you may want to edit cartoon screenshots and photoshop memes. I'd recommend PaintNet as it works OK without a drawing tablet and you can mod it with photoshop-like plugins for special tools like PS's Liquify tool.

Doesn't sound like drawing, but it will help you understand graphic software and will make your brain OK with working with images which may help you draw later.

Works especially well if you gotta draw over or redraw parts of the images. And if you end up doing porn-edits of cartoons you'll also build a follower base which may help you make friends which may help you make a friend you can draw with later.

I've never really stopped chicken scratching, what you should work on is visualizing the stroke of the pen and what you want the line to look like before you make the stroke. Often if you redraw a line on top of itself it signals that you don't know what you want the shape to exactly be.

>>6997693
I love stuff like this. I've been wanting to tie this kind of shapework into my art because I think it really makes the character stand out when beside them

>>6998097
I'm so glad I failed enough to get where I am. I look back at my art from a few years ago and hate it because it looks so terrible, but love it because if I hadn't drawn every single sketch, I wouldn't be half decent now.

Also, I always enjoy your sketches anon, the shapes are very nice.

For 2024 I think I will follow the drawing university courses by prof. I've legitimately never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby and have gotten lazy over the years with my only actual one which is writing and the only reason I'm good at writing is because I wanted people to be able to understand what the fuck I was saying and I wanted to write good stories because I thought I'd never be able to make them in a visual medium, but that's it. I've never been able to commit to a serious routine, schedule, or anything. I just sit in my room online doing basically nothing.
Everything I try doing looks so daunting and impossible. I tried learning Source Filmmaker as a teen and I gave up immediately because it looked too complicated. You need to remember that parallel lines converge to the same VP. I quickly sketched an example of two boxes rotated without changing the vanishing points. If you want to rotate the box that you drew, you need to find the VPs and draw a new box with parallel lines that converge to the same vanishing points.

So, any item you draw in a blank void you can technically say is on the same plane above and below the horizon line. You just have to add the context when you use them in a drawing. For example, in your drawing, I can say both those boxes are the same height and are placed right next to each other. But I can also say that the right box is 1/100 the size of the left box and is floating in front of the camera. Another thing I can say is am looking at both boxes from above and the right one is balancing on its corner. Until you draw them in a scene all are possible.

I think I understand it a bit better now. So without context, we can't say for sure how the depth of these boxes really function, only that:
>a) they're on the same level in terms of the horizontal line)
>b) they both share the one vanishing point on the y axis.
But then again, is a) really true? Looking at the back corner of each of these boxes implies a certain depth that both share, as it is roughly the same. Is it possible for two objects to have the same depth, but different scale? Idk I just want to be 100% sure

Well, you have to actually draw through Bridgman. It's like a thousand drawings (this takes about a year), but yeah. That's the gist of it. It won't get you to a "comic artist" level, but you'll get closer by drawing forms over and over.

> Though is it alright as a beginner to get a art tablet?
If it gets you drawing, then I see no reason to not get a tablet. If you're concerned you won't use it, I would try starting with regular ol' pen and paper, stick with it for like a month and then try digital.

I like the aliased look, but you can get a lot more out of studies if you pick the colors manually. Don't rely on the eyedropper because you have no idea if you're picking the right color (there's a bajillion different hues in all the pixels).
You should look for the matching colors by sight because it's the best way to intuitively learn color relationships. Not sure abot further tips cause I don't know much about the current version of Paint.

Haven't tried doing a 'full' piece in a while, so this is as good a start as any I suppose, right before the new year. It's sort of a weird thing where the initial design I was going for is so simple, that I can't think of where to put detail to make it look better. Still, I probably did a better and faster job on this than I would have a year ago, even if I'm still /beg/ tier. Hope you all have a fruitful year.

I am nowhere near being a true pro, but I do feel I'm at least decent now, so I'd like to know some ways in which I could improve further on both composition and lighting, and if there's something I could learn that practice alone cannot teach me.

This is one of the finer drawings I've made recently after reading "Color and Light for the traditional painter", and I'm not asking for anatomy advice cuz I don't think this wood-ass mf is a good signifier of my level of anatomy lmao.

Anyways, any tips I can get on both lighting and image composition would be greatly appreciated (including how to make more interesting backgrounds)

I think you should paint the foreground and background at the same time. It would help with cohesion. Like start with a rough value block-in and then gradually dial in the detail over the whole piece without overly focusing on one part too much. Hope that makes sense

You got some skills.
Some poses are a bit stiff (red middle right 2 ) but some gestures are nicë.
Some heads be a bit weird, almost there but not quite. Try and learning about skull anatomy.
Facial muscles and how the neck conects to it.
>Pic elated
Facial important bits: IMO masseter, temporalis, zygomaticus major minor (some people have a split zygomatic muscle giving them a smiling dimple)

For skull anatomy: foramen magnum, zygomatic bone, orbital bone, temporal fossa, mandubule , and maxila (teeth do not follow the lips in curvature. Keep that in mind

Neck: cervical spine curvature, sternocleidomastoideus(behind the ears to center of clavicles), trapezoidal muscle superior/upper part (attaches from the base of the skull following the cervical spine , ends at the cranial side of the "spina scapulae and the lateral (most sideways) third of the clavicle.

Trachea curves forward, one end is open in the pharinx ( right behind the trachea is the esophagus) the other enters behind the clavicles.

Ps the most mobile joint is the atlantio occipital (first cervical vertebrae and the base of the skull joint). By leaning your head forward the ceric. Spine looses almost all curvature,

cranial units (neck proportions are based off the normal head position with a normal cervical spine curvature. (Basically Lean head forward the neck spine will get longer, lean head back it gets shorter).
Anyways looks nice. Try for colour or lighting.
Also the guys lower legs in the middle left look a bit funky

are there some drawings you can't really use construction for? like if you're trying to draw someone from an usual perspective or something, should you just use gesture or figure in those situations?

>> No.7000016

>>6999986
You can use construction partially. My fav is cranial units.
Its a ball representing the cranium.
THE BALL Looks the same from any angle and you use it as a unit of measurement (2 craniums tall, 1.5 craniums wide). Use boxes in perspective to estimate how much bigger/ smaller a cranial unit is at that point in the perspective.
Gesture will give you flow (sag, swinging, movement ecc).
IF YOU WANT TO GET EXTREMELY awootistic you can make a sideways(latero lateral view) to measure how big shit ought to be on the main piece. Never done it but its prolly possibru, a reference would likely be easier

Good grasp on perspective
Gesture, mannequinization so you can make the body in perspective, anime stylization of your choice
Values, rendering to color the shot

Maybe I missed something but basically just go through the beg sticky for a year or two zealously and you will be close to your goal

It is incumbent upon me to arrest this artistic degeneracy by means of my impeccable illustrative vitalism, to wit, a piece about the kind of person you don’t like, who masturbates to sissy porn and then kills himself. A mere few strokes of your pen, and your muscular masculine art—REAL art, sufficient to express the contours of REAL existence, laced with REAL memes—will instantaneously obliterate the sterile neologisms and fussy indecipherable ingroup-speak of the skinnyfat zogslop cutesexyrobutts NPC bugman globohomo artstyle. Pebblecuck Venetian-blindscel topazpilling, Khazarian podlicker planetary splungoven. Douftil grangleman, spoddleball vac heenie-feenie mugrancis brenge. Loomis. Cock.

What is the usual brush size do you use in pixels?
And for drawing, say, a character, what is the size of your canvas?

I avoid as much as possible to zoom in, but if I draw at 100%, I usually find it difficult to add some details such as the face features or drapery details.

usually stay zoomed out to where the width of the drawing is my handspan. I start with large brushes and then gradually work smaller. My canvas size is 2000x2000. I start with a brush that's maybe 300 and work my way down to maybe 8-10 if going for lots of detail otherwise I might stay at 20-30 to finish. Maybe smaller brush near the eyes, and for hair strands. I only zoom maybe 5% of the time. I don't look at my brush sizes though I just resize them according to my needs, but I aim for as big as possible

To commemorate starting my 3rd Month of learning to draw, I decided to do an original drawing

There's a lot of mistakes and mishaps and problems with it, but I put a lot of effort into it so I'm proud I at least was able to get it done.

how long should gesture training take? 2 mins for basic, 5 mins for landmarks and construction, and 10 mins for muscle écorché?

Unrelated but say a ribcage is bending backwards from the pelvis. Should the stretched side be an S curve, or a reverse S curve? I don't understand when it should be a reversed S or not.

Firstly, I'm a nodraw. Be that as it may, the drawing doesn't look like the model at all, she might even be a different race. I'm not sure why but here's some observations:

The drawing's face is too wide at the cheekbones. If I squint at the model and ignore the shadowed part and hat, just focussing on the well-lit area, the model's face is almost a triangle coming to a point at the chin, while the drawn face is a tumorous lump.

The mouth is too wide - just draw the red part and ignore the creases. Make the upper lip thinner. Make the gap between the lips black and add the two teeth in later.

As with the mouth, the eyes are too wide and elongated because you have drawn the concept (what you suppose the creased extremities to look like) rather than the part that pops out as you squint at it (the spherical white eyeball). Then add the lashes and dark corners last.

Also, the (hardly visible) line from the model's nose to mouth extends down to the point of her chin. That's not what you have drawn.
