When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Kinda lost right now. Learning to draw heads, I read/watched Proko, Loomis, Hampton, Vilppu and they tell a lot of useful info. Except for what I should be actually drawing for practice. So far I've been constructing heads from reference for 4 weeks and now I am not sure where I should move to next. I tried learning planes of the head, but drawing asaro heads feels incredibly artificial. Here I tried to find references in strong lighting and attempt rudimentary shading to understand planes. But I don't think it's working out.
What should I do next? Study individual features? I can't continue to only draw construction lines. Thinking of drawing my obscure waifu for a change, but after that what studies should I do?

i quickly looked at the book and i have to say the information in it is VERY DENSE. For example keys to drawing explains perspective on like 10 pages, here they do it on 2 lmao. So while the book looks beg friendly enough, you gonna have to chew through it very slowly and carefully. Also you are making the mistake of not copying all the pics from the book. Mileage is the king. You want ratio of like 5 minutes reading, 3 hours drawing. Which will easily be accomplished if you copy all the example pics in the course. Looking at your pic i assume it is from perspective homework: you didnt draw through the 3d shape, you didnt mark vanishing point and i can tell you didnt try your best drawing it. You will have way easier time doing keys to drawing.

Just draw from reference

Put the ref next to your drawing and draw

Try to recreate it. If it's not perfect, it can still be good practice.

For example I followed an explosion drawing guide for this post:>>6995290

I put the explosions the artist drew in his guide next to the canvas and tried to recreate it. I'm not completely satisfied with the excessive uniformity, but it's still good to practice it.

It's really cute. I think the style would look great animated.

As an image in itself it is a little bit flat. The light source seems kind of inconsistent. In some places it seems to be coming from above and in some places from the side. It might just be me though.

Also some things aren't really shaded at all, just one flat tone throughout. More consistency in the approach would make it feel more finished.

I would encourage you to look into simple anti-aliasing techniques. You can get a lot out of that to add more expression to the face especially. Also changing the darkness of certain sections in some of the lines in the face can simulate different line weights, which could also add a lot to the expression there.

From what I "know", I need to:
>start with the head, then work the way down the spine, then build the torso from that. The legs and arms come last and any remaining time is where you can add more form with wrapping lines.
>go fast

Focus more on getting the proportions and sizes of things correct while still remaining loose. I can tell you're starting with the head, then tunnel visioning on the rest of the body and not keeping it in proportion with the head. Try and train yourself to look at the entire pose at once and compare it to your drawing every couple seconds. Also, do shorter times like 1 or 2 minutes so that you're forced to distill the pose down as much as possible. Last thing is that gestures are not supposed to look "good", especially at first. It's better for them to be sloppy but have good, flowing lines that capture the motion of the pose. Yours show some form and are getting the angles of the limbs close, but are stiff and nervous (again, shortening your timer will help with that)

Lil redline for ya.
This is where constructivism and the later chapters of loomis comes into play, you're still at the stage where you're building your face on a flat plane so it's difficult to get proper anatomy and everything's gonna look a little downy.
At your level I would recommend bringing up a construction diagram of the facial planes and tracing over your reference before drawing a seperate study, it'll help you re-enforce the angles you're working with and give you a little muscle memory to work with.
I will say though, your proportional skills are decent, you just need a deeper understanding of the subtle angles within the face.
Note the V shape I drew to indicate the edge of the eyesocket near the temple, that was the technique that helped me get my head around eyesockets.

Personally, I think you need to switch up studying and drawing for finished pieces. Doing just one of them all the time is not a proper diet for an artist. Grinding just fundies will leave you with no actual artwork. Doing just the drawing will leave you with your drawings immortalized in memes.
Pawell has been grinding fundies for over a year now and it has lead nowhere. When he actually does draw finished pieces he can achieve nice results.

honest question, is tracing useful? I'm not talking about mindlessly tracing of course, but using construction over a drawing, checking the proportions, trying to think of what you're doing
Does any pro here feel like tracing has been helpful in a way?

>> No.6995838

>>6995834
Not sure why you would be asking for a pro in beg. Not a pro,
The only ways I imagine tracing to be useful is 1) Quickly getting the figure out of an image that is rendered or real, to reference. 2)Drawing, then tracing, and overlaying the two, and seeing where you went wrong- not any different from overlaying the original image, but it can help if you think about how your hands felt when you made the lines correctly when tracing.
imo, tracing holds no benefit when you're drawing digitally, and you can just overlay the original image. It won't really help you train your hand, and it absolutely won't help you train your eye.

question for pen and inkers: how do you prevent amorphous blotting when going for a thick line with a flexible nib? i feel like if i don't speed through the stroke, i end up botching finer details - like the face of the kneeling figure in the top image

yes, but only to break down their techniques, not to produce a quality finished piece. For instance, if part of a drawing has a long swooping stroke, it would be better to consider how the artist achieved that in the first place, attempt it, and work with the result, rather than chicken scratching a line that's more accurate to the picture

When going for realism try to only draw what you see rather than what shapes you think should be there, my sketch here is kinda the same where I'm trying to stylize based off the photo ref. You should totally do a full realism study though it's great practice and then try to do the same quick sketch afterwards you'll be surprised how different it'll look on the second attempt after realism

Gestures are good if you want to get general idea across as quick as possible. Don't think about it as an accurate representation of something, but think about what is the most important thing about the subject (figure or object) you want to show. It can be a motion, form deformation, or the way lines create a beautiful pattern or flow.
If you want an accurate figure, just draw longer poses and do actual construction.

Anon, I know that I don't trace and your post isn't going to change reality. So I don't know what you want to achieve. As I stated, I redraw initial sketch dozens times until it looks as close to ref as I can achieve. I picked it up from Krenz precision training lessons from anime general. And the bootom line is your advice "forget everything hurrr" is pointless platitudes and crabbing. I am not insinuating that my drawing looks good, and I agree that my lines are scribbles right now, it's obvious. But I know that it's my best drawing of eyes right now and my next one will be better. Do you have any actually worthwhile advice on how to make it look better, aside from linework? I have all Loomis books downloaded and read them, but I am not magically drawing better after just reading theory. My original post was complaining about the fact that the material I read and watched doesn't have practice laid out.

>>6996386
value refers to how light/dark a color is. value range TLDR is to ensure your picture looks good even when it is turned out grayscale. All your stuff has same weakness: you dont use whole range of values and it isnt a stylistic decision you made, it is lack of fundie in your skill set

NTA but if you already understand primitive forms and have basic spatial awareness you can construct whatever bullshit you want from your imagination or from reference and sculpt forms on the canvas like clay. It doesn't matter if it looks like shit, just fix your mistakes when you spot them and have fun. If you really want to grind fundies exercises then you should have the goal of making that process you're grinding enjoyable and usable in your art instead of treating it as a pointless obstacle that's in the way.

As promised, I redrew it, this time with bigger hard brushes and tried some blending. This is my second attempt at drawing values and blending them digitally. It was actually a lot of fun. I like the result and the only thing that I strongly dislike is how lashes and shade on the left is blending together into one monolith color. But I only noticed it at the very end and honestly got tired for today and I am leaving this mistake. Maybe the choice of values is lacking, but I don't see it.
