**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I think I am just burning out in general. I don't have any good ideas to draw, when I see other people's artwork I realise I'll never be on the same level because I simply won't be able to dream up of things the way real artists do. I am a corporate drone, a boring adult, my destiny is to file papers and work excel sheets and then go and drink myself senseless after work, repeating for 40 years until I die of liver failure. I'm utterly defeated and buckbroken, a frog in a well that can only glimpse the birds flying free in the sky. I'm lost as can be.

You probably just suck at making things work for you. For example, if you just want to learn to color, there is no need to copy the lineart before coloring. Think of a children's coloring book where the lines are already made for you. This pic is from an assignment in the Krenz color course.

I think you might need a therapist more than art advices but anyway for me I was pretty lost as well some time ago until I realized that the grind in art is closer to research work in academia rather than shut off your brain and press one button grind or in this case brute forcing lines on paper until it looks like your reference or you give up because it’s taking too long.

For example, if you want to get good at drawing anime head, you can choose a good reference (very important) and think of it as a math problem. The problem is considered solved if you can sufficiently reproduce the reference through drawing without brute forcing lines.

To solve the problem you obviously need to do research like watching course videos or reading books about anime heads. Those books or videos will usually offer what I like to call proofs. Loomis head drawing method is a proof that attempts to show that drawing head is at least as hard as drawing a ball with a flat side. Like all proofs it makes assumptions on certain things which means that using this method may not work for your particular problem but that’s okay. At least you learned something. Although it may not be something that can immediately solve your problem, but if you learn enough things through further research you will eventually find the solution.

I may not be a pro or anything but thinking art in this way helps give me a sense of direction and a clear way to how I can eventually draw like those pro anime artists.

The eyes are aligned with each other but not the face as it curves and turns away. Your color mixing/choices could be improved, try making the darker colors less saturated? The eyes shape could be improved, check out raiden's model closeup for reference. Proportions are pretty good, you could work on your linewieght as well. Also if you ever find yourself avoiding drawing hands or things of that nature, don't run away from it. You'll get better as you continue to practice, but it'll look strange if you end up being much better at drawing faces and eyes etc and the hands lag behind due to lack of reps

I'm gathering about 20 refs per volume, and plan to stop collecting refs either when I hit Volume 59 (So about 20 volumes to go!). I'm going at a pretty fast pace (10 volumes a day) so I should hit my goal just in time for the new year.

You are totally missing the point crab. You do realize a finished piece has multiples parts to it right? This is merely demonstrating how to isolate one fundamental and studying that. You can apply this study to even the shittiest of permabeg doodles you see here and it will just work. You do not need to draw an apple to apply the colors of an apple. Likewise, you do not need to copymax 1:1 every little detail when you can just block them out with shapes.

Just copy is one of the shittiest advice in this shithole. The idea is to draw to the point where you are close to 80% accurate of what you are drawing by starting with the most basic of basic shapes. It will teach you everything necessary to copy anime not just 1 to 1 but in any position in space like Kim Jung Gi. Now get to it and don't return until you have a decent copied anime girl.

Anime style can be frustrating, because a lot of references and examples can look really simple (and are), yet drawing them yourself makes you think you're missing something. I don't know how much detail to add, and in what places. I can think something looks decent (for what it is), then get absolutely dogged on when I actually post. Not in these threads specifically, but some others. And I'm not always sure if it's people not liking the anime style, or if it's just much worse than I think.

The center-back of her head was the highest point in the picture, and there's a divot where the proper highest point should have been from this angle. So her head feels like a cone instead of a nice full ball, and the hollow spot at the base of the skull doesn't help any.
The giant divots in the neck where there are supposed to be muscles is kind of unnerving too, also disagree using a line for the meat under the jaw connecting to the neck since it reads more like the jawbone is running away.

It will, yeah. Rotating forms is a good way to train your eye. I know /ic/ is scared of boxes but the idea is that you can break the body down into those shapes so you can wrap your head around where it's facing. But /just/ boxes won't do, you have to apply them to the body organically at the same time, so you're not ending up with stiff figures. I suggest doing an exercise like this (doesn't have to be real life photos, you can use art you like. this is from rinotuna's course) but start with tracing over them first with basic shapes. And then attempt to recreate it on the side. Check out hide channel on youtube for a guide on how to simplify a body.

visualizing things spinning in your head is just a meme phrase beginners fall for. It is not a thing that has anything to do with drawing well. Just keep drawing, learn about forms, learn basic perspective, learn construction and you will improve over time. drawing things from imagination in different angles is a great idea and if you do that you are sure to improve over time.

Yeah it's not easy, to be sure. But it will start to click in the more you do it. Some basic perspective can help supplement it if you really feel like you need to understand the nitty gritty. How do you do clean rendering like this?

I could just blur but it would look weird as some places would need sharper shadows. I assume there are sharper shadows on where the surface if more flatter with less roundness. That said I think there's more to it.
Also there's variation in hue that I'm not too sure on how to replicate. I could just air brush in surronding environement but when i tried something similar it looks uniform and boring.

do you have a tablet? your work gives me an impression of someone using a line-tool. It will never look good in a drawing except for highly stylized graphic design type of work. Your work exhibits strange behaviours like trying to use the minimal amount of lines possible for no reason even when you're not "happy with the hands or feet yet". Definitely don't begin your drawings in this type of fully opaque round brush. You need to get a sketch brush and get way-way-WAY looser before finalizing anything like this. Anyone would struggle with your current process, even though I don't fully know what it is.

Personally don't like overly tight fishnets but I suppose you can make it look appealing by making the net part bigger. If the segments are too small and there's too many you'd end up making a lumpy mess so be careful. But basically you just "balloon" the nets outward to suggest the skin filling and being pinched. Easier to indicate in the rendering part but you can suggest it with lines

Ok serious answer. Shade the leg without the fishnets in mind at first, and then determine the parts where the mesh digs into the skin and add shadows around the mesh, and highlights to suggest bumps where the skin would catch the light. Don't overdo it or the thigh will start looking like a christmas ham.

This is generally not something I'd recommend to people aiming to draw girls, but in your case I recommend you to study/copy the Asaro head, like do a few different angles (like front, profile, 3/4 at the very least). This will GREATLY help you internalize the different planes of his face.

You can find 3D models to use for free here (you can even tweak the lighting in some of them):
https://sketchfab.com/search?q=asaro+head&type=models
The simple version is enough for anime, though you can do the original one too if you feel up to it.

(A question about background art rather than drawing) (Go Princess PreCure background art)
How would you achieve this look?
It's digital, but meant to imitate gouache(?) children's book illustration, with the watercolour paper(?) filter overlay(?)
The colours also seem more vivid than the background art of most other PreCure seasons. It's meant to imitate gouaches (or Nicker poster colours) vivid pigments correct?

That said, look up paper textures (either free ones out there or you can make your own if you got a scanner) if you'd like to give your art a traditional look.

some of the collarbone disappears at an angle instead of having a longer line, know that lines represent an edge or horizon
the fold of the sleeve on the left should be larger imo
arm on the right could be longer but keep the same hand position, ie move the elbow 'back' to be in line with her other arm's elbow

This can defy your expectation of perceived size in perspective because the objects in question will have different -actual- sizes due to deformation. If the camera view were a lot closer and wide angled, then they might have opted to draw it instead the way you are suggesting; but in this case, the view appears to be more like a telephoto lens (far camera, narrow FOV, quite common for anime or anime-style illustration), in which the true sizes of the objects tend to overshadow perceptual changes in size due to perspective.

I know. But I can't bring myself to finish stuff for the life of me. Maybe I just don't like drawing.

make an original Frieren drawing of some kind then, at least you'll have a goal to aim for and you'll receive more useful comments
