What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly, keep discussion at a civil level.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

You can be the hardest working McDonald's burger flipper but that's not particularly intelligent. It seems getting paid a low wage for a low skill low effort job is a fair reward. It just not true that most people working hard don't get rewarded. I've been lazy and gotten poor returns, I've worked hard and gotten compensated for my efforts. I've worked hard but not smart and paid the price and visa versa.

Here's what I would do:
Everything in the image is moving from the lower left to the title in the upper right, so I would adjust the positions of the bats to just further accentuate that idea/movement.
I would also probably drop the castle/house further into the background, except for a few of the interior lights. I think it makes the castle more mysterious and keeps the title in focus.
Lastly as a little extra touch, I just moved a tombstone in front of another to add a bit more depth.

I got no formal training and just watch YouTube videos so take what I say lightly. I like your drawing though!

with my typical workflow i have a base color layer and then a multiply layer for light. with this one instead of a multiply layer i just made a palette for the shadow and light and a midtone so i mixed the colors with those instead. it haromonizes the colors a bit more allegedly. but id have to keep messing with it. ive never really messed with mixing as much to harmonize colors, usually with my older workflows i would just glaze over stuff.

What is the solution for ruining the readability of your sketch while you are painting it?

Like i can’t tell what the fuck this picture even is anymore. I was painting it and suddenly i looked down and was like what the fuck am i painting??

I feel like inking it would have helped, but there has to be a way that it can be done without ink.

Also my water edge control is shit. And i think that i cant get a dark value out of the pigment because the paper doesnt absorb enough paint. the water jsut sits on top then runs to the edge as it dries.

It might come down to color selection and bending the rules with light. A technique I've seen used is utilizing masking fluid to cover your brightest areas including specular zones and sharp light sweeps along contours. This will help guide your watercolour away from those areas and you won't have to worry about brush control *quite* as much. Contrast between darks and lights will help readability, maybe emboldening the darks of the muddled and organic background features while celebrating the figure of the subject with bright sharp forms will help. here's a quick take to convey a hypothetical-

This is a great piece, thank you for sharing.

Notice how the "not yet with detail" mickey on the left can just be constructed with basic sphere shapes? The reason why yours look weird is because youre not using these shapes to properly construct these characters
Winnie the pooh as a example should be way more rounder. Shape language is essential to cartooning.

The main reason it still looks off is because of conflicting light sources. There's a sun in the back, but the wall looks like it's being lit from above, and the girl is being lit from somewhere in front of her. Not to mention the wall isn't casting a shadow on her lower body. The values and colors otherwise look much better.

I was trying to follow along to a reference, but, now that I'm looking at it with fresh eyes, I think removing the sun would've made the lighting at least slightly more believable. I was just a fan of how it looked in the background.

Also thanks for the crit on the torso as well. I was trying to express the twisting of the body, which is also tricky for me. I'll keep at my anatomy studies and hopefully I can continue to improve!!!

I drew the face first and then added the hair. But I tried to fix the face based on your crit a little more and I think the nose placement isn't too terrible anymore. Not happy that I can't get the eyes right. Maybe it's the pupils... I guess I need to start taking facial expressions seriously.

people who say they can draw because they worked hard are bullshitters. The reality is so much of being good at art is basically magic, and I don't know why no one says this. fixing things and using better methods is only part of it. At first I sucked and nothing ever seemed to work even if I practiced for it and it stayed like that forever, but now its like i've all of a sudden become talented or something and I often find myself able to draw things I never even practiced and things just work out now for some reason to an unreasonable degree. This never used to happen, and its like I hit a threshold and it happens all the time. Basically it's magic and I can't explain it, but I can at least talk about things like troubleshooting and stuff and what to be aware of and what I did to get there.

I don't know why talented people don't talk about this, because there's no way this isn't happening to them too. You can tell a struggler from a talented person, you can see it how they draw that they aren't strugglers, even if its true they earned it for the sheer amount of experience they have.

To be honest, my relatively shallow grasp of anatomy somewhat helps. There are many times where I don't know how a certain body part looks and just draw in what I think would look cool, rather than drawing it accurately. But that will only take you so far; eventually you'll hit poses and angles where improvising just doesn't work out.
The only reason my improvisation works at all is because I still have a basic idea of what goes where. If your bodies aren't consistent, and if you don't know any basic anatomy, then I would advise you to focus on that first, while experimenting with exaggeration the more consistent you get.

1. fill in with a flat color (magenta or bright) green to prevent gaps in coloring
2. pick out the actual flat colors, whatever i feel like using at the moment
3. start with changes in hue (skin blush, fabric shine, etc.)
(step 4 is a "first come, first serve" kinda deal for me, and is usually done on the same layer)
4a. go over areas where occlusion happens or light does something interesting (creases, folds, fresnel)
4b. render in the shadows and blend them by tinkering with opacity, hardness and using multiply mode as i go through the entire thing
5. throw in a shitty background on another layer (i don't really think about it until i'm done with everything else)

i hope that was clear enough, cheers

thanks!, seperating the color process and doing a color pass helped me a lot recently since my colors were starting to become quite flat, and I stopped using pure white and black as gradients for lighting (I did it because I was lazy but it just gives a very washed-out feeling)

In the end I abandoned a new rendering style and just went for what I feel comfortable with for now and try to max it out and incorporating some of the things that worked
