>Can you picture what gains would look like in your style?
You know, improved anatomy, better compositions, shading, more dynamic setups, better storytelling, more meaningful pieces, improved coloring, better speed, FEELING ZE FORM... that kind of stuff. Im mostly comfortable with my art, but I cant deny Im still a handful of steps behind to what I'd like to be able to do overall.

I say I dont know what happened, but I think the reason Im not improving as much is because Im forcing myself to stay within my comfort zone for one reason or another, either:
>A. I dont have the energy to dive deep into the grind, I just want to have fun drawing *for once*
>B. I really dont have time to experiment, I need to get this work *over with*
or C. Something in-between.
I'll try to get a change of mindset and improve my schedulin, then MAYBE that will pose a change in my art.

yeah just draw is good advice as a primary mindset, if you gotta think about what you should be studying and which book you should be reading you might as well spend that time drawing, if you just draw for a while you'll naturally figure out what you should be focusing on and studying
my advice for you is to always be going back and forth with your resources, I watched Vilppu when I just started out drawing and didn't really get what he was teaching, I thought he just wasn't the teacher for me
I watched him back recently and now I understand why his vids are gold
I've been drawing for 5-6 years, but got really serious with the grind 2 years ago

>How did U come up with the idea
it was for a challenge where you make the best piece of art you can in a week
prompt was "harvest" so I wanted a twist on the prompt and make the harvest of the story not the wheat but the man's consequences of his poor decisions (the title of the comic is reap what you sow)

Yeah, it's a GMI case here

Recently I got home from my grandma's house. I was neeting there since May. During that time I had a room for myself with more privacy than I have at home, I bought a inclined drawing board and a3 paper and just drew. In this short span of time, I acquired the biggest amount of gains since I started drawing.

I have all drawing I ever did since I started drawing in folder. They are all Trad. I opened the folder with the ones from this year and they were full of ants. For some reason, a bunch of ants got there and started multiplying.

You have to challenge yourself. Push yourself harder and feel proud when you at least complete it. Find what truly bothers you about your art process and try to figure out a way around it. Like for instance, I always hated the process of sketch, then line, then coloring, then rendering, all with their own layers. So now I take a simpler painting approach with only 3 to 4 layers maximum.

You say that as if Im not *supposed to* draw like this. What if I told you that I draw like this because I want to and I only want to become better at drawing this way? What if I just want to improve my fundies just so I can draw better with this style? or branch out if I feel the need to do so? Is there something wrong with that?

None of these people, but i feel like your anatomy doesn't change because it's confined to be chibi, I don't believe you if you think you're trying to improve your anatomy.
There is no shading, you could do better composition and dynamic positions. And without shading, you can't really improve your coloring.
You can't Feel Ze Form because your characters don't have form- they're just chibi flats.
If you want to improve your shading/coloring, I'd suggest these two videos- they were insanely helpful to me.

While that makes sense and kind of agree, I think improvements can still be done within the confines of that style, but that depends on what you and I think of "improvements" and what is there to be done; I may be a little loose about it. Lately I've tried to mind the way body parts are proportionated (specially heads) and figured I should make heads way smaller... I dont know if that counts as an improvement to you, but it kind of does to me.
>There is no shading
>You can't Feel Ze Form because your characters don't have form
Sounds like the place I should start with is shading and highlights, then. I agree I may not be able to convey better forms if I dont add any kind of of depth to them.

A question, though. Why do you say they are chibis? I do ge that comment a lot too and it kind of annoys me because proportions arent exactly chibi-like, at least not in the traditional sense of 2 or 3 head proportions with small limbs and huge heads. What makes them look so chibi?

Also thanks for the videos, Im going to keep them around to study them when I can.

>I think improvements can still be done within the confines of that style...
>And I think of "improvements" and what is there to be done; I may be a little loose about it
Very much so.
When I say you aren't trying to improve your anatomy, I'm not saying you're not trying hard enough to be good, or better, I'm saying you are not using anatomy, at all. You are using the most bare bones guidelines- limbs, middle, hips maybe, head. You don't show any anatomy beyond what most people could do.
It's not just your heads, it's everything.
>Sounds like the place I should start with is shading and highlights, then
I'd do shading/highlights And anatomy. You might quickly realize upon shading your works that it won't add much- your characters are so simple and lack so much form that you'd just be shading and highlighting balls. Not even globs or glorbs or sacks- Circles.
I think this is fine, I don't think your art is bad, but if you want more form and more detail, you have to put some in.

>Why do you say they are chibis?
Picrel- putting aside the obvious fact that your heads are pretty big, your forms are Simple. They are squishy, round, like a teddy bear.

>> No.6996963

>>6996960
*Looked at your art again, idk I might be too harsh, your style isn't the most chibi in the world but if you want to improve your anatomy I'd try to think about how much you simplify the human form and what you want to emphasize while containing yourself to your style.

>> No.6996964

>>6994836
Nice work, I think you're tackling a lot of subjects and you don't seem to be held back by options.
I'd say that something to focus on would be gesture, anatomy and perspective. More integration of characters with backgrounds like you did in October with the girl or that environment with the card game would be a good direction to lean into, people tend to think it means becoming tied to perspective lines but not really, even free handing stuff in 1pp can help you without wasting too much time and that will do a lot for you in terms of visualizing eye level, thinking about how objects relate to each other in space, isometric is cool too, but I'd go a bit larger (showing more space like in the card game) just to get used to applying consistency with different objects at once.
Speaking of consistency, I see you've also done some studies of vidya characters or styles of art, so if you're favoring some of these techniques, it's a good idea to lock into that aesthetic, and to familiarize yourself with a certain process of creating your illustration and painting. The bearded man without his left arm seems to be the most elaborate in this chart, especially the one in December, has the cleanest shapes and readability too, so if you noticed doing those 2 value B&W exercises helped your value separation and simplicity of shapes, then as before, lean on it more with your studies, the idea is that you keep these approaches to a manageable amount so that you can build on top of them, and you don't end up trying 10 different things and feel like you did something and then you default to whatever that is when doing an original piece, it's a thing you should keep an eye on, it's more about a sensibility about how you approach art, more than just doing this exercise or reading this book because anon or my gut told me so, it's fine to try different things, just keep that "leaning into" idea in the top of your priorities.

I just want to say thank you ic for motivating me to draw. I wanted to kill myself in late 2022 because my dog passed away at the time and i couldn't cope with it.
I challenged myself to fill one sketchbook a month and i ended UP doing 18 of them. I was really embarassed with my work, couldn't use references without thinking it was cheating, but now i can do any study. Took me a while to understand some fundies, and i'm still far from fully mastering perspective but i'm getting there. Also, i couldn't finish anything because i thought that I needed to be perfect at every aspect of drawing before. Last month i started a project where I had to illustrate each letter of the alphabet with animals for kids. 26 illustrations, aller done for christmas, and I learned so much and it opened my eyes with what i was doing wrong and why i couldn't see more progress.
So I want to thanks every useful and useless posts that helped me to grow a lot this year. For 2024 my new goal is to do one illustration per week alongside with studies in the morning. I want to make that portfolio to be a kidlit Illustrator, and also to draw more (unrelated) porn and nsfw things on the side.

>You did make gainz right?
No, I've made no progress this year, just like I made no progress last year, just like I made no progress the year before that, just like I made no progress the year before that. Everything I make is the same; lifeless, stiff, formless, gray sludge. It doesn't matter how much I consciously think about utilizing contrast and making things darker, consciously thinking about pressing harder to get darker tones, it simply doesn't happen. It doesn't matter how much I consciously think about integrating movement into movement into the picture, it simply doesn't happen. It doesn't matter that I see mistakes in my work, no attempt at fixing them ever improves the work. No teacher helps, no video course helps, no book helps. I have absolutely no idea what to do. I just want to get some fundamentals so I can draw anime. I feel absolutely terrible if I don't draw. so I'll just keep on drawing next year anyway, walking in circles again and again.

nta but learning zbrush ain't that bad, the UI is a bloated mess but it's kinda like photoshop, you'll be using 3 or 4 of all the 200 menus you can open
here's my list of shit you should look into and in which order:
>how to open the program (pressing the , key to close the lightbox, pressing T to switch from 2d to 3d mode, learning what make polymesh does)
^this is the hardest shit you need to learn and it's easy shit^
>navigation, how to move around in 3d space, zoom in and out, panning
>learn to pull out the Gizmo, learn what each button on it does
>masks
>divisions and how topology, really really important to learn how they work early
>masks and how they interact with the gizmo
>learning how to use the standard and dam standard brush, don't bother with any other brush, those two are the "hard round" equivalent of zbrush
you now have enough intel to make a cute little table, put a tablecloth on it and sculpt a bit of drapery on it

My 2023 goal was "learn to paint". I think I did a pretty good job but right now I'm only good at interpreting simple references, so next year my big goals are:
- Observe light from life and use it in my paintings
- Learn to properly plan a piece out instead of rushing into the final version
- Render from imagination
- Make color and light decisions on my own

This year I learned that when trying to learn multiple things it's better to focus on one of the things for an extended amount of time, then switch focus to the other. If you constantly switch between topics you won't retain any of it. To do that, instead of multi-tasking like I did this year I'm going to focus on learning a specific thing each WEEK. We'll see how it goes.

>What makes you think they all look like they are all the same?

You barely deviate from the same style and all of the figures you have are basically drawn in the same manner without a lot of variation, if any at all. So then a better indication for 'improvement' or 'progress' would be things such as composition, color choices, etc, but because you keep focusing on the identical figures it's hard to get a sense of any of that.

Yes, if you like books I recommend these ones:
1. Artists' Master Series: Color & Light by 3DTotal - Like several rendering and painting books combined. It has a lot more actionable information than James Gurney's book, which felt more like an encyclopedia to me (still a good book tho)

2. Beyond Art Fundamentals, also by 3DTotal - It's a book filled with different artists explaining their processes. I am still using this book to try and learn how to put a painting together.

3. Vision: Color and Composition for Film by Hans Bacher - An image-making bible, one of the best books I've ever read. It's a book that breaks down all of the fundamentals that go into visual storytelling: Line, Shape, Value, Color, Lighting, Composition, and some others. It has no techniques, instead it's like the ultimate study guide that teaches you to break down images and figure out why they work.

4. Any art collection from your favorite painter. It really helps to have their work next to you to see how they handled certain problems, and it really helps to have -multiple- so you can see patterns in their work. Since I was just beginning I had a hard time breaking down my favorite artists' works and also found a collection of Chinese still life paintings online. Copying those helped me get started.

I watched a lot of courses and videos, the two most useful ones were Sinix's "How to Learn Digital Painting (Beginners)" and John Burton's "Plein & Simple" miniseries:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwRa5qTnr8o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvH-rtILb0s

Keep a notebook next to you, write down anything new that you learn, try to practice those things ASAP. Trust the process, it might take a few tries to really "get" something. CONSTANTLY hunt for new methods. I can't wait to see our progress in 2024.

Why did you just focus on the figures and not show more of the illustration?

>I appreciate you needlessly rubbing in the fact others are making better progress than I have
Are you being obtuse on purpose?? All of those examples just displayed the entire image or, at least, most of it so we could get a clearer picture of what is going on and have more context. Due to the fact that your figures lack variation in terms of style and shapes even compared to >>6999499 it's hard to then give you a more in-depth critique. This is why >>6999499 can get away with just showing figures and you not so much.

I don't understand why you are getting so defensive about this. It's comes across as a bit odd.

>but you are dwelling into an argument I didnt debate you, or even ask you about
You asked for a more specific opinion and then you got upset, because you grossly misinterpreted it and took offense. If you posted more of your illustrations you would receive better feedback. Everyone else has mentioned it, too. If those figures ARE all that there is then the only critique I can give you is to attempt to finish some more full illustrations. Maybe work on an actual theme so there is something that ties the images together. Try various color palettes. If you want to keep your figures that way, that is fine, but then you should work on pushing yourself with the full illustration itself.

I did ask you to ask yourself why you decided to hide most of the artwork and just focus on the figures. Now I'm going to ask you to ask yourself why are you having a hard time applying criticism to your work and opting to take offense instead in a progress thread of all places.

God 2017 was so long ago lmao. I don't really remember, I think it was just that I focused on making more shit rather than trying to make "the right" shit, so to speak. Basically just focusing on quantity over quality cus I was drawing a fucking ton back then.

The primary thing I've learned is to just treat everything as a study. I pretty much only make original work, and I've never been able to stick to a tight study regimen. The switchup I was able to make work was to go extremely hard on references, so every piece here has at least 20 reference images associated with it at the start and that'll usually balloon to like 60 by the end, with my bigger pieces usually having even more lmao.

I've got one diatribe I half-wrote and never finished which explains how I approached designing my mascot. I use the same process to designing all my characters, just using more general fantasy art for inspiration instead of Genshin.

It's not the best imo but it has most of what I'd say about design: https://files.catbox.moe/vq5133.pdf

>The primary thing I've learned is to just treat everything as a study.

I never thought about it that way, thank you so much anon for your input! I'll be sure to keep that in mind when it comes to using references too

>The switchup I was able to make work was to go extremely hard on references, so every piece here has at least 20 reference images associated with it at the start and that'll usually balloon to like 60 by the end, with my bigger pieces usually having even more lmao.

I see, so using a bit of almost everything to get the big picture in your head and combining it to one for your own is a good idea, I'll also keep this in mind

>It's not the best imo but it has most of what I'd say about design: https://files.catbox.moe/vq5133.pdf

This is really really good, thanks for sharing, I'm also planning to make designs and stories of my own characters too.

Reposting from the last thread. I'd like to make some big changes in 2024 as I've been coasting for a bit now. Mainly some sort of clearer path to doing studies that I'll stick with.
That aside though, I've spent far more time the past few months painting traditionally than I have been doing anything with digital, and I'd love to transition into that fully but it really does take quite a bit longer.

Goodie.

A year of grinding,and revelation.

I had a few years of not drawing, and once I srarted again in 2022,I just exploded with creativity. Whatever I put to paper was a victory, and I found that my style has been enhanced, and I am still learning about the depths of it.

After a year of unfocused random strsngenesd,I speculated on what to point this limited drawing time I possessed. I relearned pencil, and also to add a touch of black pen to astounding effect, and I am doing that to this picture at the moment. To have something to draw,I decided to draw each character that appears in the story of the Snowglobe, since I needed to reimagine them all anyway through the refraction of this new style perspective. I was going to retell this sprawling 180+ strip story that is only two-thirds told in my Photoshop legerdermain assembly method of making comics, but even after considering that, I knew how time consuming drawing-scanning--Photoshopping can be,and I abandoned the idea for now.

So in July I got a new smartphone, my Galaxy 8+ heroically spending its last sparks to be processed into a successful trade in,sparing me countless expenses. So I started videoing myself drawing wacky random stuff, the image appearing in hyperlapse. But now I am drawing the first introductory story, one that I attempted to in the late 90s as a 20 page comic book. I only got 40 pages done, and I have no idea how the story turns out. Now,my viewers will find out along with me.

Started to "wanting" to draw in july '22, but only feel like i've actually started in feb '23. I was seriously lacking last year. Was in the mindset of "i'll just study more, when i'm good enough i will draw real illust" and ended up with not learning much and not drawing anything. I finally accepted that I can't keep doing it like this last month. Now my plan for this year is to keep studying, but with frequent breaks for drawing just for the sake of it with the intent to reinforce what I've studied.

Why yes, I am a NGMI bitch with no hope left after 7 years or gainz. Drew 34 separate things outside of October, with 62 pictures drawn for Inktober & Kinktober, no real desire to continue drawing things for others to see left.
By the way, my aim was simply to catch up to and surpass (in skill and popularity) my former favorite artist (anterdel/asutora), who stopped drawing her around the middle of my journey anyway.

For reference, this is last year's report:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FlclC6QX0AE5nfh?format=jpg&name=orig
This is from 2021, which I recognize as the start of my depression after a burn-out caused by work overload and subsequently losing that high-paying client:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FH_ROZAWUAU1iLn?format=jpg&name=orig
And this is a very cringy summary of the first year, when I was full of ambition, fueled by both relentless bullying and rare compliments:
