If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.
https://rentry.org/za5t5

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

Do I actually want to be an artist or not?
I don't know if I just like the idea of doing it or actually doing it. I want to be an artist, but I can barely actually do any of the art. It's inseparable. It'd be like me trying to be a body builder without lifting weights.
If I wanted to actually do anything, then wouldn't I just be doing it? I should give up.
I have literally tried doing several artistic hobbies and gave up each of them immediately when I was a teenager.
>Gave up on Source Filmmaker
>Gave up on GameMaker
>Gave up on FireAlpaca
>Gave up on Photoshop
I didn't know how any of them worked or what to
do. I don't even know basic trig. Even when I look art guides, i literally cannot comprehend them or figure them out. I don't want to be stuck with no creativity or being unable to express myself. I'm 24 and I've made literally zero progress in trying to learn and the only other time before that was when I was like 12.

I've given up on tennis, rugby, water polo (was decently good at this), uni, auto mechanics, bartending (recreational ig?) and singing (was also good at that according to the instructor)

but then again maybe i would've stayed in any of those if they had actually been gratifying

mom or dad telling you "wow you're so good!" is obviously not enough for anyone, you need to find what thrills you

Watercolor negative painting 1st attempt.

The chaotic flow was imposible to achieve on the 3-4th layers, hence the sloppiness on dark areas.. I'm afraid this is due me using 25% cotton watercolor paper and possibly low quality paint. But I will try it again later.

an actual psychologist, support from your parents, support from your friends. New clothes, haircut, in general stuff that make you feel nice, eating well, sleeping well. If you're a stoner reduce the weed. A part time chill job would also help a lot. Go live somewhere else, rent an apartment with roommates to avoid suicide and pay your rent with some simple job.
FR, if you're in that kind of situation, just try to do basic things like these, even this will be hard.

use the power of overlapping and perspective to add DEPTH. do not put it next to each other like this: its boring and flat. Make some ships LARGE and overlap other ships or the robot. the pink beams needs to be thicker and again some beams should cross whole canvas and be overlapped. also get some actual space photo and steal its look for your piece: in space not all stars have same size and intensity

So I draw like the wind, draw like the wind

I was born the son of a drawless man
Always spoke my mind with a pen in my hand
Lived nine lives
penned down ten
Gonna draw like the wind

And I've got such a long way to go

To make it to the border of Mexico
So I draw like the wind, draw like the wind
Gonna draw like the wind

Accused and tried and told to hang
I was nowhere in sight when the AI generated bells rang
Never was the kind to do as I was told
Gonna draw like the wind before I get old

It is the night

when doing figure drawing at your level i think it would benefit you greatly to focus on flow now instead of later this will help you so much,

when doing a gesture drawing focus on exaggerating the pose and focus on the silhouette, try and convey the pose with free-flowy lines. study the negative shapes as well. It's a lot but the point should be to do a lot in a short period to pick up on these forms naturally and easily.

>> No.6981688

>>6981600
Completely new?
You shouldn't be doing the figure that detailed. Start with simple lines and gesture. The reason this is important is, already as shown in your own art, without it it's very stiff, it's also why it's suggested to use simple lines. The complex forms may distract you and cause you to accidentally stiffen the pose.

when doing ktd i measured exactly as you would on paper, had a reference up on a second screen, took a guess in my head ["i think the ribs are twice as tall as the head"], placed a dot on my canvas, then measured with my stylus pen to check. it's kinda awkward since you have to be a little far away from your ref monitor to hold your arm out, but it works. using any digital tool has the same problem as using perspective rulers instead of freehanding it while learning, you just start relying on the tool instead of learning the underlying logic that's so fundamental to skilled drawing

Rendering practice from last night was definitely a "handful", but ultimately I was able to "handle" it.

I think what you're asking is how the light physically behaves, for which I can not link a good video cause thats beyond my skill. But, I look at your drawing and after some time I can see she is holding a weapon, but what is between the weapon and her I can not see. From her body it looks like she is sitting with the nice big ass, her knees above her pelvis. But then I see her feet down there and see she is supposed to be standing. So for me its hard to see what you wanted to illustrate.

did you purposely change her? Good drawing, but if that was supposed to be accurate then I would say the fat of her body is lost, yours is a fit girl who works out and lots of vegetables

Worrying about pen pressure and line quality are complete time wasting distractions which are easy to fall into on digital as a beginner, you should be focusing on line control. I would recommend switching to a brush that doesn't have any pen pressure settings and ghost every line you make while going from point to point, it doesn't matter if your lines look wobbly and shit unless it interferes with the readability of your drawing. Also avoid stabilizers and undoing your lines as much as possible, just go over your lines if you make mistakes or use the erase tool when your lines go too far off course.

You will learn so much faster if you just copy art. Theory and technique is all bullshit, art is just imitation and playing by ear.

actually a good question, because everyone's anatomy is slightly unique, you will personally have to find what feels the most ergonomic to you. try out suggestions and do some trial and error.

some people do hover, mostly you'll find hovering in overhand style.
many don't hover when drawing in the normal style, thus the reason for smudge guards

How do I get over impatience with my art? In that, I get impatient that I'm not progressing quick enough for my own standards and it leads to frustration because I feel like I should be further along based on my time spent learning

oh I should add that when drawing finely with the fingers you probably won't hover, but drawing large with the shoulder and arms your hand probably won't be in contact with the surface, so hovering is intermittent

Sounds good. I suppose going to a non-pressure pen would make me less scatterbrained about what to improve.
>ghost every line you make while going from point to point
yes i did the first drawabox thing i ghost all the lines.
>it doesn't matter if your lines look wobbly and shit unless it interferes with the readability of your drawing.
The mindset i've been stuck with is that, unless the line is EXACTLY how I imagined it, it interferes with the readability of my drawing.
>Also avoid stabilizers
Done.
>and undoing your lines as much as possible,
Ah. Lmao i've used the undo button so much I broke the button on my pen. I undo so much by the time I get 1 line right my arm hurts and I can't draw any more.
So i guess that's another bad habit to try to break out of.

>The mindset i've been stuck with is that, unless the line is EXACTLY how I imagined it, it interferes with the readability of my drawing.
Digital has the tendency to make perfection the enemy of the good due to how forgiving it is since you can endlessly retry lines until they're perfect (just use the fucking line tool at that point). I did exact same shit when I started drawing for the first 2 months on digital and I made absolutely no progress because I spent more time on how things looked more than practicing the fundamentals.
>Ah. Lmao i've used the undo button so much I broke the button on my pen. I undo so much by the time I get 1 line right my arm hurts and I can't draw any more.
I would recommend going to traditional using only a pen for a month or two to force yourself out of the habit. Do pages of line/ellipse exercises everyday and take it slow, you will improve day by day. Once you have enough confidence and a different mindset then try going back to digital.

An attempt was made. I realized pretty early that the angle was off compared to Loomis's and tried to just go with it but didn't do it well. I think I was following the construction quite well but when it came to adding details I was kinda just symbol drawing. My version kind of looks like this one police sketch of a Hawaiian rapist that was used in a creepypasta. The nose and the attempt at lips are probably the worst parts here. But I didn't do AS badly as I thought I would, so it's okay. I'll keep going.

The problem is that these books don't really set up the motivation for anyone who hasn't tried to draw a LOT without structure.
The point of drawing a circle to set the face on is that you've tried to draw a face before and it looked wonky, so now you want it to look better.
You should try drawing your favorite things first with and without structure to see why you need to improve on it and where you need improvement in.
And you should draw what you want most of the time than studying all the time, if you don't enjoy your time drawing you're gonna associate it with studying and end up hating it

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be gleaning from figure drawing if I'm honest.
I understand anatomy, structure, and gesture as concepts each on their own, but putting them all together is this esoteric thing I don't really understand how to do. My understanding is figure drawing is supposed to help put all 3 of those things together, but how, I just don't know... I'm reading Huston's book right now and I think I'm failing to grasp the concepts he's putting out.
