>>6968870
Yeah, I’m with you on the control z thing. That’s why I like drawing on paper. Used to think that that time it takes to get a rubber and erase the lines I don’t like was annoying. Now I feel its valuable time spent thinking about why the lines were bad and what lines I’d like to see in their place.
With control z, the lines I don’t like are reflexively gone before my conscious mind has time to figure out why they were bad in the first place. Also feels disruptive to getting in that flow state. Anyway
nice drawings

Gesture is more about the balance and dynamics of the pose and less about proportion and form. Spend some time on blocking everything out on the page, thinking about the composition, finding the main masses (shapes, really), and taking your measurements. 15 minutes is really a pretty short pose in the grand scheme of things, if you're not used to devoting a lot of time to be accurate with a piece it will be a muscle you need to develop.

Gesture is literally what the word says. It should capture the motion and energy of the figure. Try to capture the contraposto. Your lines should be free flowing and minimal. Here's a beginner level video to get you started:

The concept of gesture varies from person to person.
But overall it usually means a quick sketch to capture the flow and the pose of the figure.

>> No.6983600

>>6983595
It captures the essence of something. You can have gestures of still life too. It just means capturing the essence on which you can later define and tune the actual form. You can also refer to Brent Eviston's course. He teaches the method of drawing perfectly. You have to start loose and go on refining it.

It's training your brain to breakdown the barrier between drawing in a less "rational" way, and transitioning to a more "fluid" way of representing the movements and larger masses and shapes of the subject. "Feeling the form" is meme'd on, but it is the true essence of gesture drawing.

>> No.7005836

Hey, so I'm beginning to learn to draw and a lot of instructors recommend gesture to beginners. But I'm having a bit of a hard time understanding it. Additionally, I've been told that it's a meme and that I should just study anatomy. So I'm asking for a little direction. Obviously I'm leaning on continuing with gesture. Various instructors insisting on gesture first holds more weight than a few random anons, but I can't help that nagging feeling in the back of my mind.
Should I study anatomy first? Or stick with gesture?

>> No.7005850

Gesture is a very hard concept to understand. If you absolutely don't get it, just focus on construction and anatomy. Yea your figures will look stiff but stiff is better than horribly deformed.

So basically, learn how to construct anatomy, then how to bend and contort it using gesture? That makes sense, and it gives me a better structure over just "feeling it out" when I have no baseline.

>> No.7005896

>>7005869
For me I just learned the basic proportions, the landmarks of the body and how to use simple shapes to construct the figure to get started with gesture drawing. Learning anatomy first in order to do gesture just made my drawings more stiffer, because I was too focused on getting the muscles right etc. I'm not saying my method is the best, but having multiples approach to see what works the most for you at the beginning can be a good thing.
More knowledge won't hurt you anyway.

>> No.7005908

>>7005896
Yeah, I'll spread out my learning a bit. Grinding on only one thing at a time would just burn me out and won't help get to where I want to be.
I'll start simple, I'm just starting so perspective is still a weakness. So a bit of that, construction with simple figures, and a touch of gesture. Try not to get bogged down by details early on. That can be saved for when I really want to git gud.

anatomy: imo shape language is more important early on than anatomy. only focus on key anatomical landmarks for now, worrying about every little muscle group is too overwhelming when you're starting out.
line quality: desu this mostly just comes with time but if you want focused practice for it use an ink pen and SLOW DOWN your drawing, make every mark you put down intentional. ghost your lines to help. you'll suck at first, possibly more than if you just use a pencil, but it'll pay off if you stick with it

in general it looks like you're on the right track lad, it'll just take more study. also, stop worrying about making the drawing "pretty" by adding extra details, worry instead about understanding the concepts you're working on. If Vilppu isn't working for you try a different instructor's approach, personally Steve Huston has been great for me

Thanks.

As for your question, timed figure drawings helped me a lot. The time limit means you can't spend too long on it and forces you to try and get the whole figure down. The timer will make you rush a bit, but slow down. Doing a bunch of 1 minute figures makes 2 minute figures feel like you have a lot of time too. Watch how Vilppu actually moves his hand quite slowly, but every stroke is deliberate and carefully made. Even when he has to restate a line, they still look confident and deliberate. Notice how he 'ghosts' some of the lines before he makes it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOtVUHgJqQk
Copying some of his drawings would help too. And as always, going back to the basics helps too. If you can't draw a cube, sphere, cylinder, egg etc. with confident lines, then it'll be near impossible to do it on figure drawing.

Using a more permanent medium, like ink, can also force you to think about your lines before you make them. The difficulty curve can be a bit steep though. Ballpoint pen can be a nice in-between since you can make light and dark strokes with them.

Redrawing the same pose, like you did, is also a great exercise to make a cleaner attempt on the second try. If you have tracing/wax paper you could use that to trace over it and save time redrawing everything.

As for anatomy, I would say it is something you develop over time. You need to slowly train all of your skills in conjunction before you can really apply the anatomical knowledge you have learned. Most of it you only gain through actually drawing in my experience.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH6E_n51-BQ
Referencing anatomy books when you get stuck on something is when I've learned the most. Anatomy tracing like in Proko's videos helped a lot too. Hampton and Huston helped me too.

I use an app called Toggl to manually track and log the time of my art studies in general. It doesn't do anything special, just the first free one I found years ago.
For my gesture drawing sessions I use the GestureDrawing! app since it has some useful features. It automates the timer, floats the window on top, you can skip refs and go back, and it randomizes the refs. It's paid but another anon shared the newer version of it recently, link is still up.
>>/ic/thread/6848835#p6849385
There is also this free one you can use. An Anon made it.
https://github.com/adnv3k/GestureSesh

For me the figure drawings are mostly for practice and study, I don't really view them primarily as creative works, that's more of a secondary thing for me. You can use your gesture drawings to get ideas or to turn into more creative works though.

>>7005450 In this one, the guy in the suit had a bandanna around his neck, it kind of looked like a bird beak so I drew it like that. You could do stuff like that. Stylizing and exaggerating the muscles is fun to do too. Try finding a good model you like and drawing them a bunch. Cosplay, costume, props, sports etc. refs are an easy way to draw something more creative.

Personally I do 30s, 60s, 2m, 5m ones then no time-limit ones. No
set time or amount of each, I just move on when I feel like it. That's usually 5-10 or so of each time. To keep things fun I skip refs I don't like, or that are too hard for the time.

The timer means that you can't get that much down, so just pick one aspect you like about the ref and try to get that down on the page. Or focus on whatever aspect you are studying. There is too much information, having a clear focus and simplifying everything else will produce better drawings.

If any figure pique my interest I'll press the back button and do another pass on it. Sometimes that turns into an hour long drawing. Most of the time I'm not satisfied and it feels more like I'm abandoning the work.

>>7012823
It’s good. You can blame the timer for your shortcomings

>>7013323
Depends on what you want your people to be doing. If it’s just pinups you only need like 5 poses. So you dont need to know much. If it’s more dynamic comic stuff some people just always use a ref. But then the hard part is making changes to the ref that look natural like they match the ref. You usually have to cut off / redraw more of the infected area than you think.

I only draw from imagination if i am too lazy to look for a pose, or if i have something specific in mind that is going to take too long to find. And i use construction for these weird poses. You kind of have some goto poses that you start with, then make small adjustments. I find many times that i compromise on the vision because i just cant draw it with my current skill level.

I only have theories on how to draw like KJG. If ive drawn something 1000 times i dont need anything. No reference, no construction, no under sketch. Like i can draw a basic pinup bust (with no face) from memory in ink. So that means he must have just drawn everything 1000 times. I think the answer is just draw a lot.

Figure drawing finally started clicking with me.

Dunno why it took me this long, but understanding the general shapes of the body and marking your lines so that they box/circle out the general positions of where they should be (e.g. line for front of torso & upperback to get the general shape of the ribcage) made shit so much easier.

Future Permabeg here. Seriously, how do you guys "capture" figures?
My brain turns to mush every time I try and draw the figure into paper. And I go back into the habit of drawing the outline and symbol draw
how much anatomy do you need to know and will it just get better overtime with figure drawing?
Please I need help with figure drawing from life, I don't really have a problem drawing already drawn figures, but converting real life people to paper is my biggest struggle

Pic related is my awful attempt at it.

Watch the Vilppu/Hampton/Proko figure demos and understand how they're solving your problem of "[drawing] the figure into paper" with the marks they make. Every line indicates something, whether it be the turning of form, a rhythm/gesture, an overlap, a contour, the other side of the form (drawing through), and so on.
>how much anatomy do you need to know
If you can observe the forms in your references and reconstruct them you don't need to know any. Anatomy serves more for drawing from imagination, construction, or applying your own stylisation.

Were these gesture drawings? If so, your figure on the right isn't that bad desu. You've got the general movement of the model and the torso and lower body looks natural and proportionate.

The left looks like you rushed the observation part.

I also agree with >>7016306 - I only stress you take a closer look at the "Proko bean" (see: Youtube). That should help out with your left figure's torso.

>The left looks like you rushed the observation part.
Yeah, I think that's the biggest problem I'm doing. I'm not exactly observing correctly or longer, I'm more focused on drawing on the paper rather than looking on the figure itself. Is there any tips to look at your subject rather than looking on your own drawing?

Most good drawings you see here take like 40 minutes, longer if you're /beg/. Part of your problem is your lack of patience. The other part is you don't even have a minimal structure of how to accurately copy what you see with no time limit, nevermind using construction to build figure sketches quickly.

You need to google 'sight size rousar' and buy one of the used books. Work up to this: >>6965876. That's probably not less than 9-12 hours of drawing. Believe it or not you don't need

That will help you observe how the forms of the body fit together and *then* you can start to think about and try construction. You have to observe human anatomy carefully a lot to internalize a sense for it. Otherwise you will muddle around with cubes and tubes forever like these people:

Why are you highlighting people who are clearly gesture drawing? That's the point of gesture - simplifying the subject to its simplest forms (i.e. cubes and tubes). Of course that's what they're going to use to represent the figure.

IMO it's like the grind of drawing. Gesture drawing to me always felt similar to chess instruction. In chess, you spend time outside of the game studying opening moves, tactics, end game positions, etc. and then you play a bunch of short 5-10 minute games to practice what you've learned. The key is sort of in the repetition, even though the games are different each time, you pick up on certain patterns every time you play. When you reach an end game position you've played twenty times, you'll know intuitively how to continue.
Gesture drawing works the same way. You spend some time studying the figure from books, memorizing anatomy, foreshortening, and then you apply what you've studied by grinding out a ton of quick poses. Just like in chess, it's important as well to analyze your drawings afterward and see where you're consistently tripping up or where there's a gap in your knowledge. The more you draw a model from a ton of angles in a variety of poses, you being to develop an 'intuitive' feel for how to draw/construct the figure...
Also in chess, after doing all this studying and grinding, most people will enter a tournament where they play games that can last an hour or longer. It's like a true test of their skill. Making full illustrations, I feel, is analogous to this sort of test.

Timed figure drawing helps because you frantically throw down lines as fast as you can to get a minimum viable complete figure down before the time is up. A 1 min figure shouldn’t just be an arm or just the head. You keep refining as time goes on.

I guess more interesting perspective? I usually end up drawing figures from a very front-facing angle (like a camera on a tripod). So drawing with more interesting dimensions, but not strong foreshortening.

In my opinion getting basic things right is better than trying to rush when you have no idea what you're doing.
Spending too much time on every piece is also not a good idea.

>>7033817
I have the same problem. The hyper angle refs help but the only thing remotely in between is anime screen caps. The have more interesting angles and exaggerated view points and are easily obtainable. I’m sure movies have it too, but it’s much harder to slog through so much footage looking for it.

You really only need top down and ground up and some Dutch angle camera work.
