If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

Draw contour lines before placing features. Make sure that the contour could feasibly go around the entire form, even to the unseen side (an ellipse for your sphere). Define where the side of your sphere is so you can connect the arm properly. Make sure the farther away foot is a bit smaller than the closer one.

I think you’d benefit a lot from learning perspective and form. Go watch some Vilppu. Otherwise, I appreciate that you’re trying to do smooth, sweeping strokes instead of scratchy line petting

Yes. I’d try them with a pencil since it’s easier to get the pencil to act like a pencil than it is to get digital to act like a pencil, but what you learn will transfer over to all mediums. If you do the exercises in digital, you’ll still learn basically everything you would if you did it in trad. Just not the stuff that’s specific to the trad medium like how to sharpen a pencil.

Hm i see what you mean. No this piece is not supposed to be sexual. I do ship these two but this piece was supposed to be the terminator lost his skin and John still accepts him. So the terminator is at the closest to feeling some sort of shame. It's a habit for me to draw blush. Maybe it looks so sexual because I'm so used to drawing smut at this point that it carries over into my sfw art lol oops. Well, I'll see what i can do, not just with the lighting tip someone gave earlier, but for the 'sexuality' of it as well. The boy's arm is coming back i just hid it for now to draw the basic form of the ribcage shape.

The posing here looks unnatural. I can’t tell if he’s supposed to be in motion or not. If he’s kicking, then have one of the arms back to counter the leg. The center of weight should also be slanted in movement/mid-action poses, especially when kicking or moving the weight-bearing areas. Practice more gestures for a bit. Look at Glenn Vilppu and Steve Huston.

I have been writing since I was 12 years old and I originally tried drawing, but I didn't do it because I thought I could never get good at it.

12 years later, I'm regretting all the time I wasted writing, and I want to get into drawing.
Everyone compliments my writing. But, and this sounds harsh: I fucking hate it all. I wish I had never gotten into it in the first place. I've never finished a single story I've ever written (which are all just fanfiction, nothing original that I can call my own.) And I wish I had gotten into visual art instead.
I usually have a very vivid imagination when I'm writing, but I still find it unsatisfying because almost everything I actually want to write about would be better suited for a visual medium, which is why I wrote fanfiction for so long. Now, I'm stuck. I don't know what to do.

the struggle of every single artist is that their art doesn't look like how it is in their heads. unless you cannot see pictures in your head. Then you have nothing to compare it to. Act like the people who cannot see pictures in their minds, and draw anyways. as long as you get 30% of the way to what you saw, you're improving.
i seriously dont get whats up with this board and thinking you have to start young, like, are you afraid of your art looking like ms paint deviantart/furaffinity fetish art? So? Who CARES just get your ideas on the paper. What are your goals? Because that should be your motivator for art. Is your goal to express your ideas that you dont want to keep in your head anymore? If that's literally it, then just keep a sketchbook and draw those ideas. ????

How did you fuck it up? It’s going to look like shit every time. It’s a lesson about drawing what you actually see and not how you imagine it to be. So when you flip it back over, you go “holy shit that’s hideous” and hopefully try to more objectively observe and analyze your subject.

it doesn't really matter use the abstraction thats easier to understand, just keep in mind that there are shapes that provide more information, a parallelepiped have well defined axis so it makes easier to place things in space, then goes the cylinder (you loose 2 axis of information because circles) and finally a plain circle/ellipse (just a point/radius and an angle) doesn't provide too much information of the space

I don't agree with these. Left shoulder is slouched lower than the right, elbow placements match accordingly. Everything else you said is too by-the-books for a drawing in a cartoony style that already reads well. Most glaring issue, for the style and medium they used, is the hair texture.

very very nice effort, good colors, good clothing, nice eyes and hair...
the problem is, you can't really tell what she's doing, like climbing stairs with a gun and a cigarette and that weird grasping pose on the left hand? There's also a lot of clutter with the stairs, the bike blending with the gun, patches, wings and all, with the dynamic pose added on top it's kinda messy. The eyes really save it though, very nice focal point.

Motherfucker I know you're an attention seeking schizo, but if you are actually being real, I have the same problem because of depression and ADHD. My solution is to just start drawing something you have an interest in, and once I start I am actually having fun adding things to my drawing and figuring stuff out.

If even drawing something you like doesn't bring you joy this hobby probably isn't for you or your depression is so bad that you don't have fun with anything, you need to change your life and seek help.

Looks like his arm is missing, or the sword was shoved through his back and popped his arm off and that’s where the blood is coming from. Doesn’t look like the blood on the blade is from use. Looks like he’s bleeding on it. Otherwise this is fucking amazing

60s gestures
>>6978900
These look great! You’re beginning to feel the form here. These are absolutely decent and are basically at the level you need them to be to begin fleshing them out into full drawings
>>6978904
Breddy gud, keep training accuracy. This looks very nice. Look at where the adductors meet the pubic bone/mound/labia majora in the reference compared to yours. You missed a good bit of detail there. If that wasn’t the focus of your study then that’s fine, I’m pointing it out just in case
>>6978912
>proportions
*nervous sweating*
>>6978926
Not bad! Check the overlap of her right (our left) breast on her torso, above and below her bra in the middle. Her boob would probably overlap her ribs rather than vice versa. I like the shapes
>>6978935
I like the more charming, friendlier feel of the left, with her rounder face and smile and warm palette, but the right shows a bit more skill. I’d fix the tangent formed by her left (our right) shoulder/upper arm where it meets the armor
>>6979001
Oh fug you’re right. I did some gestures now because of this post.
>>6979029
As much as people harp on needing to do finished works, it’s also important to know when you should just move on. I think we begs mostly need mileage. The price we pay to git gud is to sacrifice thousands of bad drawings to the art gods before they’ll grant us the ability to make good drawings. You might be bothered because you drew one breast in complete side profile and the facing us dead on, instead of drawing both in roughly 3/4
>>6979030
It’s fine
>>6979052
Very nice shapes, highly appealing
>>6979061
After you know the anatomy, yeah, think about designing it with appeal. But to learn? That’s like learning the primitive forms by drawing snakes instead of cylinders, or trying to learn to draw boxes by drawing cars instead. It’s good practice, and you can do it in addition to Hampton, Morpho, etc., but not as the sole method of learning anatomy. (Unless you really like it)

Do you need that many construction lines when drawing from reference? My understanding was the reason construction lines are made is to help artists draw within correct anatomical proportions but when there's a reference the correct anatomy is right there in the photo so for photo studies I just drew as close to the ref as possible but never used construction lines. and when drawing from imagination construction was helpful to remember and creature faces with believable proportions at any angle

yes i definitely do. i am using the Reilly method and i try to use as few as possible.
but here, first the oval for the head, the center line, the pit of the neck, then the distance from hairline to browline, then from browline to the bottom of the nose, then the sideplanes, the eyes, that is all required for sure and depending on what youre drawing or emphasising more lines are needed.
the idea of not using any construction is retarded.

Notice the drawing on the right, the first one he drew has no construction lines ._. Of course when teaching others he uses construction but that's an extension of what I was saying before.

you use construction lines to learn consistency proportion/perspective etc but eventually after practicing and enough work you learn to do it in your own head without the construction lines, or having the lines in your head. I thought the idea was that they were training wheels, using construction when you have a reference seems to defeat the purpose of reference no? because in my brain I always thought construction was for making strong consistent artwork without reference or when references aren't available. It's like a guideline or training wheels. If I'm wrong or that doesn't make sense let me know.

>> No.6979296

My mistake, I meant the drawing on the left which is where he draws normally not the right which is where he teaches others "I envision it in boxes first" but again that just means he creates the grid in his head and is showing others how to create 3d looking figures. but again if you watch him draw notice how he himself doesn't actually need to draw those construction lines, they are in his head from years of practice and visualization. Not saying construction is bad, infact it's great but is it retarded to not use construction lines when drawing from reference or drawing in general?

Watched Proko's vid on Loomis heads and tried reading Loomis' book, but it just doesn't click with me yet. For now I am trying to just draw overall head shape to burn it into my memory. I drew around 30. They all needed very heavy fixing, because when I tried just Loomis method, the result wasn't close to the reference, usually the cranium was either too small or too big. I'll do couple more and move on to studying actual head planes. Hopefully it will click after couple dozen asaro heads. I'll just keep grinding.

Why does Vilppu teach to sketch people out in the real instead of from photos?

>> No.6979611

>>6979416
Yes. It's because when it's done consistently, it makes said artist look like they are asking for attention instead of review. It's fine if someone decides not to take a criticism and decide not to apply it to their art. But to never listen to anyone's makes them look deaf and not using the board for it's purpose and instead looking for people to stroke their egos. Please provide a specific aspect of your art you want us to look at and give our opinion on. Art critique is like eating food. Some people have different tastes and preferences. Additionally, the best way to use ic is if you aren't so dependent on other people's opinions. it's sort of like, hey I'm hitting a block and here's where i tried. It is subjective but we give advicd based on personal experience and art principles. This isn't stack overflow. Go code if you have a better time when something tells you if you're doing something wrong. With art you can never actually get an error or a failure the computer will never tell you the thing you drew is wrong. Let go of the expectation that one day it will. If you do anyways that's not an art problem that's a you problem, and indicates you work on your own self esteem.

Just started drawing <1wk ago, currently trying to build muscle memory and whatnot. However, I noticed when I try drawing things from reference my images look stretched or squished; is this just a newbie thing that gets resolved with general experience, or are there drills that I should be doing specifically to target that? I'm currently working on an image from reference using grid lines to guide me, but idk if it's better to do that or go without. Also, I'm using pencil and paper (notebook paper w/ lines which are shit, and printer paper).

Focusing too much on contour without understanding the form and gesture of the body.
Study more figure drawing books and do some simplified anatomy (e.g morpho).

+Focus on flowing and confident lines. A lot of your shapes look clunky because they are mirrored, try more asymmetrical lines.

+ A lot of your features lack three dimensionality, practice representing them as simplified 3d forms in space

>> No.6980411

>>6980386
NTA but I can never understand what figure drawing books are trying to teach me.
The only thing I glean is to draw a bunch of big, flowy lines for gesture, then staple a bunch of cylinders and boxes that won't fit inside said lines because gesture and structure are entirely antithetical to each other. They all feel like you need someone there to explain wtf you're even reading.
Studying anatomy feels easy by comparison, you can just sit down and study Bridgeman or Morpho for a bit and be done with it.

Gesture has two main benefits -
1. feeling organic forms or the flow of one form to another
2. stopping your figures becoming stiff

gesture gives you a basic flow of the figure through 3d space
the gesture of the spine (lines) indicates the vertical axis of the main forms (head, ribcage. pelvis), you must use judgement and understanding of proportion and perspective to place these forms.

Look at any artbook or process book for any manga, anything
The Japanese learned this in 1800's when there was a cultural exchange, one of the first to apply Western teachings to his work is Hokusai, also the guy who named modern manga as such because he published his random drawings inside among which are gestures of everyday Japanese people.
There was never a "war" among cultures, they always pushed one another into betterment by exchanging knowledge. Van Gogh did a series called Japonism in which he incorporated elements from Japan, and European influence showed up in the Japanese woodprints early on.
There is no war among artists despite what the occasional fat Marvel cuck artist tells you in attempts to sabotage how well you learn to draw.
