Why you should not trust youtube shills:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH1WEYF8rlA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twy5Wo8m284

Do not read anything into pressure levels. 1024 is more than enough.
If you have any additional questions, ask them.
Remember to ignore all chinese shills.

Recommended tablets:

>Screenless:
Intuos 3, 4, 5, Pro, One by Wacom

>Display:
Small (10-11"): Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
Medium (12-16"): Samsung Galaxy Tab S8/S9 Ultra, used iPad Pro 12.9"
Large (22"+): Cintiq 22HD, Cintiq Pro 27 - Make sure they have VESA standard mounting holes.

>Avoid:
XP-Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand making Wacom imitations.
Poor build quality, pens with wavy lines, wobbly nibs, broken tilt, issues registering light pressure, terrible customer support, uncalibrated. All Chinese brands have the same problems. Check out the webm to understand how bad they are.
Do not be fooled by myths like "Chink companies are just as good as Wacom now" - they've been saying this for over 8 years, nothing has really changed. Consider reading the amazon reviews, particularly the negative spectrum and you will find some very common themes.
Chinese companies have also been proven to shill on 4chan. Someone in the /csg/ general on /g/ once got an email from Gearbest asking him to post positively about them on the "csg chinkshit general thread". You will very likely see dozens upon dozens of aggressive, insult-laden posts in this thread, especially whining about the OP. They are from the shill department.

>Microsoft Surface Pro
More optimized for palm rejection than good quality drawing. Wobbly lines when drawing slow and straight.

>Cintiq 13-16"
Completely outclassed by the Galaxy Tab Ultra & iPad

>Cintiq Pro 16, 24, 32
Overpriced, QC issues, loud fans, proprietary mount interface

>Lenovo
Worse than Samsung in every way.

I'm here to tell the truth.
I am mega rich and have tried all the options.
Here's the consensus.

Ipad - shit feels like drawing on slippy glass, even with paperlike it just feels like ass, it's tiny and you can barely prop it up.
Maybe get it if you have tiny feminine hands and you don't mind getting arthritis from trying to draw on it with apple shitencil.
Also will get obsolete in a few years no matter what model you buy, enjoy not being able to use it once they cut all support and built in battery dies with no ability to replace it.

Samsung - pure fucking garbage, literally chink tablet but worse in every way, terrible skipping, wobbliness etc.
Feels better to draw on because of the rubber tip but it drags, enjoy getting your line cut and jump randomly with inconsistent pressure.
Also android so all software will suck donkey dick, probably the worst option.

Chink tablets, all same garbage, literally the exact same thing with different names slapped on it.
All the same problems in 2 different packages, with a screen or without, unusuable.

Wacom, pretty much same chink shit, broken and doesn't work, drivers are pure garbage, built in obsolescence with the screen and the tips wearing down no matter what protectors you use, overpriced as shit, need to buy a fucking arm that needs to be drilled into your floor to be at all useable, still feels like poopoo kaka to draw on because of chink build quality.

there you

doubt you are going to get any spoonfeeding tech support on ic. if you really want that try /g/ instead.
but even then they might tell you to RTFL and do it yourself since you decided to use a niche distro.

How small is 12" inch stuff for use with my pc (Kamvas 12, Artist 12)? I've been using a Giano V2 since it came out in 2018 after moving from an Intuos 5s but I feel i fucked myself up on it since the drawing area is way too big and has definitely impacted my enjoyment whenever I use it. I only use 1080p screens.

Was kinda planning to use CSP with hidden menus since I mostly use shortcuts to open them up, but again, I don't know how big of an issue the screen is.

>but chinkshit
Don't care, low tier wacom screens are stupid expensive.

daily reminder that at this current days, you are fine with any brand product of wacom, huion, xp-pen, samsung, and apple, from like 2017 to this date, like, almost any product.
The differences are minimal in the tech actual drawing aspect, and just a valid consideration in things related to cosmetic and comfy workflow.
You can even sketch completely fine with an galaxy note 10.1 from fucking 2012.
All mid tier screentablets are in work scenarios the same in quality, a screen from a wacom cintiq to a huion kamvas to a samsung to a ipad will not have scratches even after several years of continuous work, that's a fact validated from anyone that owns any of those devices by those brands, so stay calm and confident that you will have a decent product and only investigate about the other things that will affect your daily work: types of plugs, length of cables, buttons/sliders, accesories included like stands and their angles, etc.

My only advice is to avoid in any brand any accesory or piece related to wheels or dials, like the deco 03 or the huion dial's models because that part will be the first in break, you are much beter with touch sliders and buttons.

>>6970289
i really think that if you are considerating the small sizes then just go for the 16" models and you will be for sure comfortable with that, because even if you dont use the extra space, you avoid any regret that you could have if you buy the smaller size.

yes, but android pencils are just capacitive, because there is no android device with stylus options, with the particular excepttion of brand that make their product with active pencils like samsung or apple. Some made them with branded pencils like LG, and others, but most of them are capacitive too, that means that the stylus is just a stick, that conducts the electricity of your body/fingers to the screen, so there is no difference with using just your fingers or a stick with aluminum to the tip, is just a comodity, they dont have pressure sensitivity or any feature. That's why they are cheap to buy. So yeah you can buy one for the feeling and will work, but remember that no pressure sensitivity and palm rejection.

Incidentally, I mentioned getting a Deco 01 v2 in an auction at a considerable markdown last thread and it just arrived today. It looks unused. Before I'd purchased it I noted its dimensions and how they compare somewhat favorably with my preferred "backpack" tablet the Intuos 3 PTZ-631W, just being a little smaller. On paper it seems really solid, and in some ways it is, but it's not perfect. For one, the drawing surface sucks. It's basically just plastic, it feels cheap (in fairness, it was) and is weirdly loud. Mine came with a texture sheet, it feels different (wouldn't necessarily say better lol) and is notably even louder. It fits over the hotkeys somewhat but doesn't become truly affixed in place-it becomes loose easily. I don't think tilt works, at least not well, but for the record I think tilt is a gimmick feature and I hold it in as much esteem as I do pressure levels. Speaking of that, I haven't run into any issues or inconsistencies with pressure sensitivity as of yet, but I've been using it for all of 20 minutes.

I stress that the active area of a tablet in this format is the most important metric on which it should be judged, this tablet is "adequate" in that regard specifically-but given my experience with Wacom tablets the corner cutting ends up being conspicuous and even grating.

Nah that was without-it's not as frequent as in the sound file, I just found a spot where it was doing it and hit it a few times in a row. It's definitely happening though and isn't rare by any means either. Given these circumstances I'd stick with using the texture sheet, even if it's a little louder in general it's better than having this unpredictable nails on chalkboard sort of thing going on.

Anyway, the GEN 2 is next, I'm actually excited about this one, it looks like a step in the right direction for the format.

I don't care about wireless, stylus tilt, pressure sensitivity or the hotkeys much, that's all window dressing. What intrigues me about the Gen 2 is that it's the biggest active area in this format since the (much too big) Intuos 4 XL.

I don't think I'm able to properly convey the problem over the internet for various reasons because of discrepancies in volume settings and the like, but I'll just say it's loud enough you can hear it very clearly even while listening to music wearing headphones. The stylus also makes a very audible clicking sound, once as it's depressed slightly into the stylus as pressure is applied and once as it resets its position.

On paper it's a good product "for the money"* at $60 MSRP but I never imagined this specific thing would be a problem

*just get more money, dude

Like most (70%~) of Wacom's tablets, it is not worth saving a week's wage in exchange for even a marginally worse lifetime drawing experience.

With that said and with this experience however, I think my optimism in the Gen 2 XL is not misplaced, and I'll be picking one up when I can.

I have my reasons.

In the Gen 2 XL's case it represents the first real novel design in this format in a long time, a significant departure from the Intuos Large that's remained essentially unchanged since the Intuos 4 generation. My argument has always been that we need flat tablets with big drawing surface areas (to compensate for ever-increasing display sizes) in as small a footprint as possible-and the Deco Pro Gen 2 appears to represent progress towards this ideal. I won't know to what extent until I use it though.

>>6971720
kek

In my case, I'm not quitting drawing any time soon, but what I'm sick of is smiling shills on youtube, less obvious but equally insidious shills on forums and imageboards, and just general ignorance from people who don't know any better influencing others into making decisions that will set them up for years of unnecessary struggle when drawing on its own is already difficult enough. The only reason I care as much as I do is because I was firmly on the other end of it when I first got started and went through many of the same patterns I see others going through.

Over 70% of non-display tablets shouldn't even exist, but the ones that have earned that right represent a better way to draw than hunched over an angled screen or suspending your arm mid air to draw on a raised one ever could. It's one of those things precious few people could understand, having never experienced it themselves.

anyway...

>that pristine intuos pro I bought is showing very visible wear after a few hours of drawing total with basically minimal pressure applied
>the stylus is already worn down to a sharp point

bruh

Even with the replaceable surface, I was never a fan of this planned obsolescence "realistic texture" shit both in theory and in practice but it seems like it's worse now than ever. I'm going to draw with this for a month and see what it looks and feels like in the end compared to what it looks like when I first got it.

POOR LITTLE BLACK GUY
Would you look at that: they changed the design of the nib, whatever the supposed initial intentions behind this choice, you can't use previous generation nibs in the current gen stylus (but notably, I'm pretty confident you can use previous gen stylus down to the 4 on the current generation tablet). I almost think it would have been cheating to have swapped the nib out this soon anyway.

>>6973262
Your wrist being supported by the tablet doesn't contribute to carpal tunnel in the slightest and only aids in prevention of posture-related ailments (neck, shoulders and elbow). However, if you're talking about small and to a lesser extent even medium sized tablets specifically I agree, at least with their contribution to that one specific ailment. This is why I believe that only large format tablets ought to continue being made. Anything smaller basically belongs in a landfill if you care at all about your long term health and your drawing experience.

Get an Intuos Large [3, 4, 5 or Pro]($150-300)
A Huion Inspiroy Giano or an XP-Pen Gen 2 XLW ($200) may have potential as well-but I haven't used either of them as of yet; I can't 100% endorse them outside of their having the dimensions appropriate for your needs as an artist.

recently i got a samsung tab s9+ , the glass don't suck as much as the ipad and the pen works because has a soft tip, but have not even close the same sensitivity that the huion has, inconsistent lines are real , sorry about the guy who thinks that the pressure levels doesn't matter, he just don't draw, it matters and sucks to get used to a worst pen, but as a mobile device it's ok

if you don't have your bamboo pen you can get a wacom one pen for $30, yes it's gonna come with godawful plastic nibs so you'll also need to buy replacements either from wacom (elastomer) or the staedtler noris nibs that have the same texture as the original S Pen (which you would have to buy anyway because it wears out and these are the only decent replacements for it)

However, a large format tablet isn't like that at all. People need to understand that they're making a multi-year investment and proceed accordingly. Thinking "what's the least amount of money I can get away with spending" has never been the right way to go about it if drawing is something you care about at all, but it seems to be a tiresomely common one.

Not something I've run into myself. I would say that my stylus is normally at a 70-80 degree tilt most of the time in a neutral "writing" grip, the stylus continues to be read by the tablet at close to 20~ degrees if I hold it weird/like I would a graphite pencil (obviously you can't draw with it like this but it's still being tracked). I'm not sure under what circumstances this kind of issue could manifest.

Tilt "the feature" isn't worth any consideration whatsoever-but your stylus should absolutely be able to be "tilted".

>>6976097
Build up your line confidence with the Dynamic Sketching exercises (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaif0PpNMas)) using a mechanical pencil or a felt tip pen. Tooth or grit is a feature with diminishing returns for the artist (but compounding returns for Wacom et. al.). It has an okay "feeling" initially, but asymmetries in the surface quickly begin to build up. This throws off your line work as the stylus meets greater resistance on one portion and less on the next. I've been using the more recent Pro model a bit lately and it definitely reaffirmed my low opinion of that design choice, so I'd urge you to reconsider improvising it.

i've a tab s already, but i'm always open to other products, even though in this particular case buying this product in where i live would cost wayyy more than the options you listed even firsthand. i was left pretty happy with the basic bitch screenless tablet i bought from them years ago as an emergency replacement for my wacom intuos and didn't make me feel like i was using a different tablet. even though kids are going to download tiktok and modded ibispaint x maximum, i feel like there are going to be a few adults as well, steps like these could help android drawing space to grow. since huion comes from art hardware space my hopes are it's better than oneplus, xiaomi and huawei tablets even if it's not apple or samsung quality. i like the smaller but less gimmicky softwares we have (even though i'd love certain apps from appstore to get ported) however i also want the android space to grow, especially would love if we got a killer app like how apple ecosystem has procreate

though every pressure&tilt sensitive tablets that doesn't run on a desktop OS seems to be stuck with batteries, except the ones that use wacom tech. from the top of my head i think it was a patent issue with wacom, which also caused non-wacom tablets of 2000's/early 2010's requirement of batteries. when, but might be a form of planned obsolescence when i think about it.

I'm going to have to use a Windows machine to judge this thing fairly-unless I can figure out how to properly install the Linux drivers before the end of the day.

It's noteworthy that I hadn't had to go out of my way in this regard with any of my Wacom tablets nor the XP-Pen Deco 01 v2 I'd gotten a week or so ago, but I won't rush to bad conclusions without being certain-still I need to talk about this.

So, the larger active surface area and overall design is a step in the right direction. It really feels nice to draw on, the textured surface isn't overbearing nor does it seem half, maybe even a quarter as brittle as the Intuos Pro's is. If it were just its physical form we were talking about, it could represent a serious threat to Wacom and I still think it's possible, provided I don't encounter the sort of hiccups I've run into once I'm in the Windows ecosystem I'm more comfortable with.

Unlike the Deco 01 v2 the tilt works (not that anyone should give a shit about a feature like that to be honest) but I've encountered quite a few actual issues so far.

Sleep Mode(?) - It seems to want to "sleep" if the stylus isn't within read distance and it goes to sleep QUICK, like a deep sleep in under 10 seconds. The time it takes to wake up seems to vary but it's been consistently in the 10-15 seconds range. Ok holy shit it just took 27 seconds. If it's away for 5 seconds or less it will wake up quite a bit quicker, but anything more and you're going to waiting.

Broken lines - Frequent enough to warrant attention, I've run into inorganically broken or staggered lines like in the picture that can occur on contact or somewhere in the middle of the line.

For now, there really isn't much else to say, these are serious enough issues to where my current verdict is that-despite the very intelligent overall design externally that I was so initially thrilled about-it's basically unusable for me at this time.

>> No.6983214

Oh yeah, it's also just stuttering a bit at times in general too. Like freezing in place-and the fact it falls asleep in the time it takes me to write two sentences out like this is maddening.

I could alleviate this specific issue by leaving the stylus on the tablet the entire time, but I'll have to break my current habits to remember to do that-and doing so also means I could potentially brush the stylus away by accident (doing so in the past so often is how I got in the habit of not letting go of it until I was essentially done drawing to begin with).

Again though, while this isn't looking great at this moment, I'm not going to dishonestly claim that I've done everything I can and am supposed to do on my end either, these issues I'm dealing with could all very well be completely mitigated by a properly installed driver, I've just gotten away with not worrying about that with previous things I'd tested-including from the same company-so I've been caught off guard a bit

>> No.6983239

Alright, I'm retarded. The sleep mode thing is real, but if you make contact with the surface it comes back pretty much instantly. hurr

6983272

Actually nah, having to decide between waiting 20 seconds for the stylus to read or making blind contact with the surface (which will activate whatever tool you have selected in your drawing software) still sucks. So even if I'm retarded I'm still going to claim righteous indignation here.

>also it's still doing...whatever the hell this is as-well as just freezing up intermittently from time-to-time.

Still, let's not get too excited, I'll reserve a real final judgement until I can safely say I have everything set up properly.

How much trust can one put in their on line control abilities when there's the workaround of using a less than stellar screenless? I feel bad relying on stabilization, but if this blasted tablet is going to make lines wiggly regardless I can abate at least some of that guilt.

6983617

Alright guys. So, unfortunately even after the driver install on a mostly fresh copy of windows things haven't improved from my initial impressions. Going into this I was ready to call this a Great Leap Forward for this kind of tablet, the new Intuos 3 maybe even, but I can't in good conscious recommend this thing.

>You are not able to control the wildly inconsistent Sleep Mode feature through the driver software and contrary to what I believed tapping the surface isn't the cure-all I'd thought it was
>still experiencing cursor freeze regularly
>inorganic, rapid changes in stroke direction
>not going to bother with the remote hotkey thing because something like that isn't "remotely" important

Competition is good. Wacom has enjoyed what is essentially a monopoly for many years, and this design on its face with its modest footprint, larger active area, uncluttered, minimalist design and durable (at least moreso than the Intuos Pro) surface had the potential to represent a major improvement to this long-neglected tablet format, but this isn't the world-beater it could have been. The truly smart elements of its design are hampered by weird inconsistencies with its performance that are too significant and persistent to ignore.

But I am also thinking about buying regular tablet with no screen for inking and coloring and a simple office scanner to scan my paper sketches. Would it work as intendent or are there pitfalls I don't see? I used to have wacom one but couldn't tech myself to draw on it at all and I also can't really find any examples of people showing good complex drawings with no-screen tablets. >I used to have wacom one but couldn't tech myself to draw on it at all

It's almost like projecting your 32-inch gaming monitor onto a drawing surface the size of a post-it note is a bad idea. You could hardly teach yourself to use a computer mouse if you cranked its sensitivity all the way the furthest it'd go either and it's essentially the same thing. Your movements can only get so slight and subtle when they're exaggerated so much by the tool you're using.

In my test using a ruler and ellipse guide, a 2-inch motion on a One by Wacom yields a 650 pixel line on your display-a full horizontal third of a 1080 monitor from two inches of motion, whereas you'll get a 305 pixel line on an Intuos Large (320 for an Intuos 3), so what you see on your screen is much more consistent with what you're doing with your hand. At that point, it's pretty seamless and the advantages drawing in this manner has can be experienced.

The tablet you bought is indeed a /beg/ trap, one meant to pressure you into buying a screen-a purpose for which it's much more capable than it is for actually drawing with.

A lot of Huion and XP-Pen models share stylus compatibility. Admittedly it's harder to find third party tablets without the stylus, but honestly they're so inexpensive even complete it doesn't seem like something worth getting super worked up about. If it's bothering you just replace it with a lightly used Intuos Large, or keep using this one until it literally falls apart in your hands and then buy a lightly used Intuos Large. Or even a new one, who gives a shit-these things can last decades.

>>6987380
Yeah I don't personally trust Wacom any more than the others, my first Cintiq was a brand new 12WX I bought release year, and it had a miserable issue where the pressure sensitivity would spike very regularly (basically 100% pressure every 5-15 strokes) and when I emailed them in desperation they told me to kill myself (not really, but you know, they basically deflected blame and wouldn't do anything about it lol). This is an Intuos 3 PTZ-631W (11 x 6), 20 years or so old, nearly anyway. I myself have been using it daily at work and my parents' house every day since I bought it with zero visible wear. The Intuos 3 (12 x 9) I use at my apartment is in similar condition. You can find a lot of old 4s, 5s and Pros still kicking as well, although because of their textured surface and detachable USB they're not quite as durable (the newer pros from 2017/19 have replaceable [$40] surfaces though so I guess that's a compromise of sorts; I fully expect them to last a long time as well, their deteriorating condition notwithstanding). These tools have no moving parts and generate no heat, barring physical damage to the surface or inputs, or freak occurrences like a short in the built-in cable in the case of the 3 they can accompany you for a great many years of your art journey.

Shitposting aside, do we have any good examples of serious artists recommending Chinese brands? I suspect they're probably fine, but finding good mature advice is difficult

Ergojosh, tb choi, personal ami, jazza (lol), there are a lot of pros, both industry and freelance, that use and recommend chink tablets.

I've been eyeing a secondhand iPad pro 12.9 3rd gen, would there be any reason or justification to spend significantly more for a used 5th gen? I was gunning for a 1tb model which apparently has more ram anyway (on par with 4th gen) and if I got anything later gen it probably wouldn't have as much memory to work with for my price range anyway.

I hear the newest models have pen hover though, how much of a game changer is that for drawing?

If the recent changes to the pen are anything to go by, no

as in, no it's not a good buy?
or no the next ipad isn't going to be a massive leap?
or no we're not expecting it soon (but could be a big leap)?

>no the next ipad isn't going to be a massive leap?
what exactly are you hoping they do?
only things they can really improve for art are pen tech (battery free) and etched glass. Neither of which are going to happen, because Apple doesn't care about improving their product for art.

the only advancements iPads made for art in the last decade were getting the pencil and bigger screens when they introduced the Pro, it's been quite literally stagnant since then and they're starting to strip features out of newer pens now (gen2 usb-c has no pressure sensitivity)
Apple isn't even interested in offering bigger sizes
if you want one, just buy one whenever it's most convenient/cheapest for you these things last for ages unless you have the chronic slippery hands syndrome most applefags seem to

ok thanks i'm leaning towards springing for a current model.
I'll need to read up more on
>gen2 usb-c has no pressure sensitivity
I assume during regular wireless use, the Pencil retains pressure sensitivity otherwise that would be outrageous

there is literally no difference for art from the 3rd gen to the current offering.

It genuinely has no pressure sensitivity at all, by design

what about laminated glass? What gen are you advocating for here? Surely 3rd gen is too old

ok so i'd need to buy the 1st gen pencil even if i get the latest ipad model.
That's very weird but god to know - i would not have thought to look into whether that feature had been ditched and could have bought the wrong thing

definitely get the gen2 pen just make sure it's not the USB-C variant

>> No.6990339

It's a valid question for base iPads, the gen10 doesn't have a laminated display and neither will the gen11 but all iPad pro gens are laminated from the get go
The pro iPads are the only ones really worth looking into for art anyway

Is there a recommended place to buy these 3rd gen models? Are they still new?

I've bought 4 non-wacom tablets (the Huion Wh1409 Giano, the Huion H106, the XP-Pen Deco 01 v2 and Gen 2) and until a friend told me it was giving him trouble (the battery-powered stylus on the Giano went bad on him pretty quick) I would have recommended one out of three of them (the Huion WH1409 "Giano"). Now years later I'm waiting on the Inspiroy Giano to arrive to see if things have changed. If I think it's competitive with a used Intuos Large I will say as much, that's the measure by which any other tablet (including Wacom's) should be judged.

Don't trust youtubers, to use a very topical, seasonal analogy they are ignorant at best and Judas Iscariots who will gladly betray their peers for thirty pieces of silver (a few hundred dollars by today's standard) at worst.

The digitizer resolution, dimensions and even hotkey layout of the Intuos 4 are for all intents and purposes identical to current generation models. Yes it's perfectly usable and even superior in some ways (surface is a bit more durable, hotkeys have a little lcd showing what key they're set to). All you're missing out on are touch features and wireless, which are both completely worthless. In many ways, the Intuos 4 is actually peak. I use the 3 because of its cosmetic durability and longevity but there's nothing wrong with a 4 whatsoever.

This.
But the resident shill here loves to peddle the idea that you must trust them.

Any Linux tards here?
I know nothing about digital drawing tablets/screens what should i look into?
Don't wanna get ishit pro or galaxy fag S unless i can flash custom rom into it, but i prefer a screen rather then tablet for 400 to 500 bucks budget, also can that screen be used as a second monitor ?? I am assuming it has good color palette and brightness it would compliment my high refresh rate gayming monitor
